Round nineteen selections

Cronulla Sharks vs North Queensland Cowboys – Friday night – Remondis Stadium

Paul Gallen is unavailable for this game after tearing his bicep while lifting the Origin trophy - he should have asked Cameron Smith for some advice with regard to technique. Gallen is delaying surgery at this stage, but I expect him to check-in to get his body rebuilt if and when ASADA ping him with a 6 month ban. Andrew Fifita was impressive enough on his return last weekend and will get better with every round. If the Cowboys want to play finals football they need to win games away from home, and so far this season they haven't achieved that even once. They won't get many better chances than this. Jonathan Thurston dons the number 16 jersey for #RiseforAlex round - it may only be a little thing, but it's one of many little things he does that make him a great ambassador for the game. His performances on the field are no different, and it's those little things he does (that others don't) that can get the Cowboys a very rare win on Sydney.

Verdict – Cowboys by 4

Result - Cowboys 36 defeated Sharks 18

Parramatta Eels vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Pirtek Stadium

This game becomes a whole lot more interesting with both Inglis and Hayne lining up in the number one jerseys. I expect both will relish the opportunity to outpoint their opponent on Friday night. More than a few will be tipping the Eels this weekend - their record at home this season is very good (and the Bunnies record at Parramatta is terrible). That said, I'll take recent form over historical records generally, and that 48-0 loss by the Eels to the Warriors was a concern (tipsters take note however, of the number of teams that find a way to bounce back after a shellacking). The last time the Eels beat the Bunnies was way back in 2010. They have a good enough team to win, but they can win it without my support.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 1

Result - Rabbitohs 32 defeated Eels 12

Sydney Roosters vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

I'm not sure what the Panthers need to do to get noticed, but winning this game would help. $4.00 is readily available for the Panthers this weekend, and I'm very tempted. The only thing holding me back is the quick turnaround for the Panthers from a tough Monday night game, while the Chooks have had plenty of time to think about things after that extraordinary loss to the Sharks a few weeks ago. Expect Jamie Soward to target the Chooks wingmen in the air. The Panthers, for mine, have the best interchange bench going around at the moment, but the shuffling around of playmakers (thank you injuries) makes it tough against an opponent whose 1,6,7 and 9 have remained intact all season. I think they'll go really close, but I'll take the Roosters by a narrow margin (and probably back the Panthers with a handicap start). Note the Saturday afternoon timeslot folks. The game of the round.

Verdict – Roosters by 2

Result - Roosters 32 defeated Panthers 12

Melbourne Storm vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night - AAMI Park

It's uncanny how often the Raiders win in Melbourne (and at enormous odds every single time), but this weekend I think they'll rack up their second ever loss at AAMI Park. The Storm didn't win last week but they did restrict the Bulldogs to six points and the quality of that game was exceptional. The Raiders were quite impressive themselves, with Anthony Milford virtually winning the game on his own (Broncos fans will be licking their lips in anticipation of things to come). Can the Raiders back up from an away win on the Gold Coast and score another away win in Melbourne. It's a big ask for anyone, let alone a team struggling near the foot of the ladder. Like the Chooks/Panthers clash I would recommend backing the outsider with the handicap start. Storm....just

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result - Storm 28 defeated Raiders 14

Brisbane Broncos vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday night – Suncorp Stadium

Do the Broncos want their coach? I think we find out on Saturday night. Here they back up from a gut-wrenching loss on a Monday night and face a confident (and big) opponent on the Saturday. The Broncos need this, and if they want Anthony Griffin they win. Tipping the Warriors away from home is always daunting but here's a funny little thing I've realised - they've played games this season in Townsville, Melbourne and the Gold Coast...for three wins. Their only losses in Australia have been in Sydney and Perth. This looks like one of those games where each team will rack up four or five tries. If that is the case, I'll punt on Shaun Johnson kicking more conversions than Corey Parker. I'm not sure who wins, but I'm expecting a belter of a game.

Verdict – Warriors by 4

Result - Broncos 28 defeated Warriors 22

Newcastle Knights vs Gold Coast Titans – Sunday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

#RiseforAlex = #KnightsbyTwenty. Get in the queue.

Verdict – Knights by 20

Result - Titans 22 defeated Knights 8

Wests Tigers vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

Not many upset results in the NRL surprise me, but if the Tigers win on Sunday afternoon I would certainly be surprised. They've already done better than most expected, but as the season wears on it's starting to look like their run has ended. If the Storm can't score more than 4 points against the Dogs in Melbourne I fail to see where the Tigers can score enough to win this weekend. A competitive clash, but the Dogs should do enough. A Tigers home game, but note the venue.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 8

Result - Tigers 46 defeated Bulldogs 18

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Manly Sea Eagles – Monday night – WIN Jubilee Oval

Another potential upset, with the Dragons and their halves combination finding their feet in recent weeks. Even though the Dragons are better than they were, I suspect they'll always struggle to match it with the very best teams in the NRL. Manly are one of those, and their line-up is near enough to full-strength. The Sea Eagles have their eyes set on a minor premiership/top two finish and I expect they'll be too professional to let this one get away from them.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 8

Result - Sea Eagles 21 defeated Dragons 12

Wally Lewis - round nineteen selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Thursday night or early Friday morning.

  • Sharks vs COWBOYS
  • Eels vs RABBITOHS
  • ROOSTERS vs Panthers
  • STORM vs Raiders
  • BRONCOS vs Warriors
  • KNIGHTS vs Titans
  • Tigers vs BULLDOGS
  • Dragons vs SEA EAGLES

Morning all
Agree with the Thinker in all games except one. I'm gunna give the Broncos one more chance. If they can't lift at home over the Warriors then they might as well have their "mad monday" next week.
Cowboys
Rabbits
Roosters
Storm
Broncos
Knights
Dogs
Manly
Good to see full rounds back. Doesn't make it any easier though.

Steel Panther's picture

I like your "mad monday" call on the Broncos Mark. You could say that about a few other teams right now too with the Cowboys at the forefront of my thoughts in that regard. The Warriors have a pretty good record against the Broncos both home and away though and the clash in Auckland last month was a fairly close one. A 50/50 call but I think I'm going to lean with the Thinker on this one.

Sharks by 2 points
Rabbitohs by 8 points

Here are my tips

Cowboys by 6 The Cowboys will be a wrecking ball to the crap Sharks

Rabbitohs by 4 I think South Sydney to win here

Roosters by 6 since round 8 whatever the Rabbitohs have done the Roosters have done the same thing so here is my tip if you tip Rabbitohs tip Roosters tip against Rabbitohs tip against Roosters you will be right there

Storm by 8 I think Storm will be a wrecking ball to the Raiders seasons although they have won the last 3 times in Melbourne

Broncos by 1 I am only going to go Broncos because I like them in a thriller

Knights by 8 I hope Titans win but I tipping the Knights because it is rise for alex round I would like to see Titans to be a wrecking ball for them but I do not see it happen not at this point note if you like The Wiggles Taylor Henderson Jai Waetford Jessica Mauboy this is the event for you

Bulldogs by 6 I think Bulldogs will be another wrecking ball this weekend this time to the Tigers

Dragons by 2 don't ask me why but I hate Manly and I wanna see them lose for one like Storm twice Tigers Broncos and Bulldogs have all done

christine forb10's picture

a i agree with your tips except for dragons i went manly, even if you don't like them there is a reason they are where they are on the ladder and i can't over look that.

Hi everyone,

As usual I reckon I’ve tipped the “perfect” round but as usual I know I’ll get some wrong. Then again I’ve tipped exactly the same as the King, Mark Ashford and Christine so who knows. OK, another weekend of footy is upon us so let’s get into it…

Cowboys - perfect opportunity to win their first game in Sydney.

Rabbits - could be wrong but I think Souths have won the last 6 times against the “Slippery Ones” and we will most probably be looking at 7 on Friday night.

Roosters - the boys are all rested from their camping trip and will be looking to get back some respect after last week’s fiasco. Go you Roosters!

Storm - Origin’s over so watch these Storm Troopers get it on.

Broncos - absolutely no idea with this one. Even though the Warriors have had the better of the Broncos lately and the fact that they are absolutely flying at the moment, I’ll be tipping the home side in this one. Yeah, might not make much sense but I reckon the Suncorp mob will get them home. Sorry JR, no “Peow! Peow!” this week brother. Best of luck anyway.

Knights - emotional game this will be. Wayne reckons they’ll do it for Alex and so do I.

Dogs - sorry Tiger fans but the Newbie gives your boys no hope in this one. Prove me wrong and I will be flabbergasted. No problem, I have been flabbergasted many times this year. Evidence my boys losing it to the Sharks last time. Ouch!

Manly - mid season resurgence aside, methinks STG will come back to earth on Monday night. Gotta go with the Boys from Brookie here.

OK people, good luck with your tipping this week and good luck to your team as well. Cheers.

Steel Panther's picture

I'm with the Thinker on all my tips this week. It's a now or never round for several teams.

Cowboys - It's definitely now or never for this team who have horrible form on the road. If they are ever going to win in Sydney it's against a team in crisis.

Rabbitohs - The Eels really are a poor side but always grow another leg at home (yea I know Eels don't have legs....) but it's the Bunnies for me.

Roosters - Another team who have to get serious if they want to be there come finals time. The Chooks have been all over the place of late.

Storm - Despite the Raiders good recent record against Melbourne I can't pick them.

Warriors - As Mark said this is a game the Broncos should win but I'm going with the Thinker and JR this week and tipping the Warriors.

Knights - No better reason to play this weekend than for Alex McKinnon. Hope they win convincingly for him and the fans!

Bulldogs - The Dogs are the form team of the comp right now.

Sea Eagles - Second to the Dogs when it comes to form is Manly.

Good to see us back to a full eight games. Good luck everyone. Thanks Thinker. Are you going to the game tomorrow night?

mark ashford's picture

Hey Johnny Ray thanks for that link mate. How about those Broncos Jerseys and Big Lazzo bustin em up the middle. Those were the days!
Looks like the tips for Warriors / Broncos about even so far. Be interesting to see what the Guru says, Anyway good luck to you and your Warriors mate. May the best (or luckiest) team win.

Johnny Ray's picture

Yeah, you too Mark ! May the best team win ! ;-D

Guru Craig's picture

Better late than never, here we go...

Sharks - The Guru is looking for the double upset tonight. NQ don't like away games and the side they've named is missing several regulars. On that plus the fact the Sharks have beaten the Chooks and the Broncos recently, its worth a punt. Cronulla 1-12

Paramatta - The Guru could well do with a trip to the looney bin, Para to beat the Bunnies, after the 48-0 thrashing dealt out by Johnnys Warriors coach Arthur has called for a bit of old fashioned intestinal fortitude and The 'G' hears they've brought the Hayne Princess out of cotton wool this week, surely the best player breathing air will make the difference.

Roosters - Penrith were absolutely woeful last week, even though they won and with a few blokes out it will be interesting how Ivan covers the gaps. Sydney should run riot here, the 2013 Roosters would have done it by 30...how much this time? Chooks by a few.

Storm - Melb in Melb with their backs against the wall, enough said.

Broncos - Brisbane better make amends for last weeks rubbish, those are the sort of performances that gets coaches sacked....The 'G' does hear Wayne is possibly available? that's another fopar on the Broncs, SIGN HIM asap, don't even think about it, get it done. Griffin has improved a bit, but this is NRL and he is not up to it week in week out. NZ will bring a hard game but this is a must win.

Newcastle - Plenty said about this game, The Guru expects Newcastle to cover the line and rise for Alex. GCT will give it a go but they wont want to win this.

Bulldogs - The Doggies have been impressive, Des is a bit of a champion isn't he. On form the Bellmore boys will smash the cats...but, The Guru has a nagging feeling that the Tigers can get this done but after tipping Para and Cronulla he cant tip the stripes. Caution peoples harry is due a win and Robbie is absolutely filthy about last weeks carve up by the men in charge, if they've a chance Wests Tigers will have a red hot crack.

Manly - Monday madness continues, The Sea Eagles should be good enough but the Guru has no real confidence here, STG are capable and could be motivated by a bit of Wayne magic, as its the place he will probably end up. Manly 1-12

christine forb10's picture

To all who tipped broncos: hook has stood down three players from this weekends game against warriors the following players won't be taking the field jack reed, daniel vidot, corey oates so a, mark ashford & newbie from perth you might want to rethink your tip, i'm now taking warriors but it's up to you what you all do.

Johnny Ray's picture

I love you Christine ! ;-D

Steel Panther's picture

I'm stunned!! Two out of two on a Friday night. Must me a first for me this season. Interesting the disruption in the Broncos camp. It may work in their favour. The guys coming in are pretty much all regulars anyway so maybe it won't have too much of an affect.

Johnny Ray's picture

Ah crap ! Congratulations Mark and Congratulations too to A, Christine, Guru Craig, Newbie From Perth and everybody else that picked Brisbane Broncos to win ! I was wrong ! :-(

Johnny Ray's picture

Warriors ! :-(

christine forb10's picture

Johnny ray i changed my tip to warriors from broncos so your not alone but i still have another one different i took manly so depending on that one wheather or not i lose any ground or not in points.

Guru Craig's picture

This time next week the Broncos could have a new coach!

Board meeting on Tuesday to decide, Hook or Bennett?

a's picture

Remember what you told me Christine never change I thought you would have learnt that from me last week

christine forb10's picture

a i've been waiting for you to say that to me all day but i actually thought it would hurt a bit more than that , i guess i'm just a sucker for punishment what can i say , i still have one game to go that i've taken different to you & that is the dragons / manly game i took manly so if manly win then we are still on the same score & if they lose them i'm back to being 2 points behind you no big deal i will catch up to you again in points at some stage like it did previously .

christine forb10's picture

titans won that means no one can get a perfect score this week which makes me feel a bit better.

Titans winning at least I like them Tigers smashing Bulldogs OMG who expected that no one is getting more than 6 this week

mark ashford's picture

Good morning Johnny Ray and all the happy tipsters on the Thinkers great website.
Your Warriors nearly got the chocolates in a very close game, Johnny Ray.
You've got Manly at home this weekend so it doesn't get any easier.
Wayne Bennett is to return to the Broncos for a couple of years from 2015 gotta feel a bit sorry for "Hook" he seems a good guy.
Tigers and Titans win huge upsets. This season has it all. Who will be there at the finals?? It's anybody's guess. Lets see what Manly can do tonight. Could be another upset on the cards.
With 7 rounds to go is anyone game to predict the grand finalists??
Could be fun.

Steel Panther's picture

The Warriors should have won Mark but after a good start started playing dumb footy. They have to learn to not give away silly penalties that are momentum killers. It was the skipper Mannering on Saturday and he should know better. No wonder Bennett chose to exit Newcastle after yesterday. No better cause for the players to lift than there was yesterday and it wasn't as though they were up against one of the tougher sides. Sure has been a hard season for us tipsters!!
