Round twenty-three selections

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium

Some time ago my little helper built a feature for this site - allowing me to embed videos. What better way to try it out than to relive the try by Greg Inglis the last time these sides met (and hats off to my little buddy - who does far too much work on this site for not enough credit or scotch - he's battling some spot fires on the home front at the moment and he's still in here chipping away like a champ. Thank you sir!). The Broncos were tenth before last weekend. They come out and produce one of their best wins all season and they're still tenth. Not much reward for effort there, but at least they didn't go backwards. A repeat of that effort wins again, but this is away from home and an in-form opponent. I couldn't say no, but I can't say definitely yes either. George 'wheel of fortune' Burgess is out, and Sam has been named but may not get there. That evens this contest up considerably, and this is the game of the round. Take note of the Thursday timeslot or you'll miss out.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 4

Result - Rabbitohs 42 defeated Broncos 16

Parramatta Eels vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

For quite some time it was looking like the Bulldogs were revolutionising the modern game, what with their ball-playing forwards and fast hands. It hasn't been working so well this season, and getting across the stripe appears even more difficult as the season wears on. Have opponents worked out how to shut them down, or are they just off their game a little? Josh 'grubbier than Ennis' Reynolds is spending time at home kicking the cat and a new halves combination isn't likely to fix the problem overnight. The Eels didn't score too many meat pies in Darwin but they nearly scored about a dozen. You have to think they'll win the battle for points this weekend. Note the venue - the Eels are the home team in name only.

Verdict – Eels by 2

Result - Bulldogs 18 defeated Eels 16

Canberra Raiders vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday afternoon – GIO Stadium

I've been tipping the Dragons for a few weeks now and it hasn't done me a lot of good. Some would suggest I should show some persistance and stick with them, particularly against a team running second last. Perhaps they are right, but there's this little thing called 'the hoodoo'. It isn't called a hoodoo for nothing. Theoretically the Raiders have something to play for (avoiding last), and I saw enough from their new fullback (welcome back Jordan Ropana) to say the Campese-less combinations can do enough at home.

Verdict – Raiders by 2

Result - Dragons 34 defeated Raiders 16

Melbourne Storm vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night - AAMI Park

I feel like I'm saying the same thing about the Storm every week, but they are the closest thing the NRL has to a metronome. I'm still scratching my head wondering how they lost to the Knights last weekend (but I enjoyed watching it). Paul 'labrat' Gallen is back for the Sharks but they lose Fifita and Tagatese. It's not often the Sharks get steam-rolled by an opponent but I have an inkling the visitors are in for a touch-up here. Find one of those weird betting options where you can back the Sharks to score 6 points or less....or even zero. Note: my tipping has been woeful this season, but my last three betting suggestions have all won. Gamble responsibly.

Verdict – Storm by 20

Result - Storm 48 defeated Sharks 6

Wests Tigers vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – Leichhardt Oval

Sometimes when you run your eyes over the team lists things just jump out at you. The first thing that jumped out at me about this game is the Chickens have named three vice-captains??? The second thing that jumped out at me is Cory Paterson in the centres for the Tigers. Now I've always liked Cory but I'm sure the Chooks will give SKD and Tuivasa-Sheck every chance to test him out. Watch for a potential dead tiger bounce this weekend after that lifeless performance against the Cowboys - particularly at this venue. This could end up being something like a contest...for about 20 minutes.

Verdict – Roosters by 12

Result - Roosters 48 defeated Tigers 4

Newcastle Knights vs New Zealand Warriors – Sunday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

Some big inclusions for both sides with Mullen and Scott back for the Knights and Johnson for the Warriors. The sensible among you will do the opposite to me here but I'm loathe to tip against the Knights at home on Sunday afternoons. There should be a decent crowd at this one after their stirring win last week and of all the potenial upsets this weekend this seems the most likely.

Verdict – Knights by 4

Result - Knights 28 defeated Warriors 22

Gold Coast Titans vs Manly Sea Eagles – Sunday afternoon – CBus Super Stadium

Both teams name unchanged line-ups from last weekend - unless you include the coaches. John Cartwright is renewing his truck driving license and Neil Henry steps back into a major role. I will never doubt the Titans in the effort department but I don't doubt the Sea Eagles either...and they're a better side. I can't see them sacrificing their premiership lead with successive losses.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 8

Result - Sea Eagles 15 defeated Titans 12

Penrith Panthers vs North Queensland Cowboys – Monday night – Centrebet Stadium

At the start of the year the Panthers were my smokey for a top four finish, and now that they are there I've started to doubt them. They don't seem to be doubting themselves and that's slightly more important. The same can be said for the Cowboys who are (finally) winning a few games away from home and playing the sort of football we all know they can. The visitors face a sterner opponent this weekend but 64 points against anyone tells me you have to take them seriously. In the last four rounds the Cowboys have scored 150 points while conceding just 44. This competition may be a six-horse race after all.

Verdict – Cowboys by 4

Result - Panthers 23 defeated Cowboys 22

Wally Lewis - round twenty-three selections (in bold)

Here are my tips

Broncos by 1 Broncos in a upset of the round

Eels by 6 Eels to ba a wrecking ball to the Bulldogs

Dragons by 2 I think it is finally time time from the Dragons to be a wrecking ball for the hoodo

Storm by 20 easy one to pick here

Roosters by 22 If Tigers played like they did last week it is good night to them

Warriors by 1 I think Warriors in a thriller here

Sea Eagles by 2 As much as I hate to do this Sea Eagles to be a Wrecking Ball to GCT

Cowboys by 2 Cowboys to be a big Wrecking Ball to the Panthers

This is the video when Rabbitohs beat the Broncos earlier this year

Hi everyone,

OK, let’s get into it…

Rabbits - hey, weren’t they awesome last week. More of that and this will be a “stroll”. Then again…

Eels - those Doggies are a hard bunch to work out and they cost me a “perfect round” a couple of weeks ago. Reckon the “slippery ones” should win this due to Doggies inconsistency.

Dragons - just can’t bring myself to pick Ricky’s mob. They’re last (well, equal last that is) on the ladder for a reason.

Storm - they’d still be shaking their heads after last week. I know I am. They might have their “mojo” back but somebody lost it for the last few minutes of the game last week. Sheesh, this wonderful game never ceases to amaze me. Storm will want to get last week out of their collective memory and it seems the Sharks are gonna cop the redemption.

Roosters - go you good things! Poor old Tigers. This game is a no-brainer for me. Couldn’t possibly lose this could we? Mind you, stranger things have happened. Nah, Mighty Chooks by at least 10. Hmmm…

Warriors - yes I do know what happened last week but maybe the Knights have run out of “get out of jail” cards. Or have they? Gotta go with Johnny’s mob here, especially as a "thank you" after looking at the youtube link he left after last week’s Storm game comments. Dude, priceless! If you haven’t already seen it, do yourself a favour and go back and check it out. Funny as you-know-what! Johnny, where do you get these from bro’? You’re a ledgend! Go Warriors. Peow! Peow!

Manly - these boys will be smarting from last week as well. Pretty sure they’ll want to remind everyone how good they are and should come out fighting.

Cowboys - no particular reason why I’ve gone the Cowboys. Just reckon they’ll get it done.

Thanks to Thinker and especially his hardworking “helper” on getting vids onto the page. So much to look forward to. Yay! OK, as always, good luck with your tipping this week and good luck to your team as well. Cheers.

Yes, RIP Robin. Fave movie is “Hook”. Thanks brother…

Hi all
Only comment this week is "I can't believe Josh Reynolds will play again this year" with his record he should be out until next year. His mates are saying "he's such a great bloke off the field" well who cares we only see him on the field and he's a disgrace. Begone fool!
Rabbits (sorry Broncos)
Eels (no certainty)
Dragons (last chance)
Storm (goodbye sharks)
Roosters (here come the chooks)
Warriors (peow peow)
Manly (sorry Titans)
Cowboys (fingers crossed)
Thanks Thinker and good luck to all.

Guru Craig's picture

Nice new feature to the site Thinker, well done Helper it looks great.

Broncos – The Guru was at the game featured in the Thinker’s video, and watching big GI work his magic from the stands of Suncorp was painful but impressive. Hoffman will have his hands full in the 1 vs. 1 battle tonight. Broncs 1- 12

Eels – The Hayne plane is in full flight and ready to land in the middle of the ANZ pitch. The Doggies seem to be losing some finesse with the Eels on a run of momentum. Parra should get the job done if they can stick together. Keep your eyes on Sandow’s boot, it’s been coming in quite handy.

Raiders – Guru is backing The Thinker, Dragons haven’t beaten the Green Machine in Canberra in about a thousand years. The Hoodoo will continue?

Storm – There’s been a storm warning for AAMI Park, it’s been predicted to be very Smithy, while raining Cronks and Slaters. Hold onto your hats, they’re getting ready to whip up a Sharknado

Roosters – The Tigers are still reeling from that wrecking ball that slammed into them last week, and The Guru doesn’t think they’re ready to get back on their feet yet… Not against the Chooks anyway.

Newcastle – The Gavin and Gavin show! Gavin Morris and Gavin Reynolds are in charge of this affair at Hunter Stadium which is a tough one to tip and should be a thriller. The Knights should still be riding high off last week’s events and will be looking for another fairytale.

Manly – Guru asked Big Dave to put in a big effort and score a try last week and he came through. The Coast will be looking to impress the new coach, but Manly will be too good. Their eyes are set firmly on the top of the ladder.

Panthers – Monday nights at the foot of the mountains are a bit nipply this time of year, and the Cowboys don’t play well on the road, and even less so when it’s cold. There hasn’t been many NQ smiles outside of 1300 Smiles Stadium this year.

Hi all.
Thought the Broncos went alright last night but the Rabbits were unbeatable. Baring injuries I think I saw 2014 premiers last night.

Johnny Ray's picture

Yeah Mark,

And speaking about champions anybody knows what has happen to Christine ? She usually has her picks up by now, so I hope everything is okay in her life as she seem to be really upset last couple of weeks. Christine, you're reading this just know we are all thinking of you and keeping you in our thoughts. Thanks ! :-)

christine forb10's picture

a & johnny ray i'm still reading your comments but i can no longer post comments there are some people on this website that don't want me on this website anymore they are making it hard for me to even post a comment so don't think i'm very far away guys & a i gotta say i'm proud of you for tipping manly but you really shouldn't have gone against bunnies , my tips are the same as a except for broncos i took souths .

a's picture

Please post some comments Christine those people who tell you to shut up might not be very nice people anyway the people on the tipping ladder are okay but the other people need to be nice about what they say but

a's picture

If you don't have anything nice to say don't say it at all okay

christine forb10's picture

a it's not anyone telling me to shut up there are some people saying i ruined this season for everyone & i ruined last season too that i'm just not worth it that i said i wasn't coming to the website anymore please remove my username & email address from this site which i did say , so they want me gone they said good riddance & stay away basically i'm no longer wanted on this site & they got away with doing it to so what else can i do bar stay away .

christine forb10's picture

a i was being nice to you before i said to you i'm proud of you for taking manly because i know you hate them but you shouldn't have gone against bunnies ok i wasn't being mean to you at all & thats why i have to stop doing this people are taking things the wrong way .

a's picture

Well thinkers little helper did shut down the comments for a little while last week so I hope no more nasties come on the site

christine forb10's picture

thats the reason why the thinkers little helper shut down the comments last week on friday for a while because of comments that were directed towards me & that is the reason why i say i can't keep doing this cause tomorrow it's going to happen again but not by me , see my problem is i do care even though you guys don't really know me but one thing i do know is you will win the thinkers comp a & you will enjoy the rest of the season including finals but i can't & i won't be part of it all but i will see the comments & tips you all post & i do appreciate the fact you have defended me before so thankyou for that ok .

christine forb10's picture

a if you want proof of what i say insted of going into round 23 on the thinkers website go into round 22 instead and read every comment made then you will see what i say is true .

a's picture

Thanks Christine I hope you will win thencomp

christine forb10's picture

a you will win the comp not me your 1 point a head of me & on checking i took penrith so it might not go very well.

a's picture

Thanks christine thank you for your support the only reason I tipped Cowboys is because they are my team

Nrl enthusiast's picture

^ is this a massive troll or what?

a's picture

What are you talking about Nrl enthusias

christine forb10's picture

a i wasn't knocking you tipping the cowboys i know they are your team, i only took penrith because my father wanted a choice for a change he doesn't always get one & he wanted penrith so i have to keep him happy too ok.

a's picture

Yes I understand it is a 50-50 game after all

christine forb10's picture

Johnny ray i bet your hurting what happened to warriors ?

Johnny Ray's picture

We lost game we weren't suppose to lose that's what happen Christine ! We are so inconsistent it's crazy to think how we are still managing to make top eight after this weekend performance ! Crap :-(

christine forb10's picture

a that win just puts me back to being on the same points as you not ahead of you & i can't win the comp anyway i'm not on the tipping ladder so i'm no threat to you winning the comp at all ok , you will win the comp thats a given.

a's picture

Do you think I should play it safe this week

christine forb10's picture

a i think when it comes to tipping this late in the season it's strategy throw loyalty out the window ,tip with your head not your heart & let common sense prevail & off course home ground avantage plays a big part too but i wouldn't be tipping cowboys over souths this week but thats me it's up to you what you do ok ,wally is 1 point ahead of you & i know you can catch him .

christine forb10's picture

a when i look at wally's tipping history he has got 7 each week for the last 3 weeks so yes common sense prevails play it safe but try to jag the one he doesn't get .

christine forb10's picture

a wait as long as you can to put your tips in say after wally's tips are in so you can see what he has taken first ok then try & jag one , when i won my in house comp two years in a row it was strategy that played a big part not because i could see any ones tips because i couldn't but i knew after tipping against them all season which way they would tip wheather they went favourites or the upset for example so best of luck i have faith in you .
