Round four selections

Parramatta Eels vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Pirtek Stadium

Does anyone remember Daryl Millard? I'm not seeing a lot of hands, but Daryl is back in the NRL this weekend, replacing Dylan Walker in the centres for the Bunnies. The last time he played in the NRL was in 2009. He's been busy in the meantime, plying his trade in the south of France with the Catalans Dragons - and who could blame him. The Bunnies coach, having studied at the esteemed Bellamy College of Fine Arts and Rugby League, knows how to find troops to slot into the system seamlessly. Millard will do just fine. The Rabbits were below their best last weekend, but were still good enough to beat an in-form opponent pretty comfortably. Parramatta will lift for the big occasion at home but they need to. I could be tempted into backing the Eels with the handicap start, but we have to keep tipping the Rabbits until they give us enough good reasons to stop. Right now I can't even think of one.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 8

Result - Eels 29 defeated Rabbitohs 16

Wests Tigers vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

Tipsters note the location of this Tigers 'home game'. Two of the more popular Sydney clubs will draw a decent crowd but there'll be no shortage of blue and white in the stands. The Bulldogs bring an unchanged line-up from their victory on the northern beaches (literally). Brett Morris has taken to the custodian role at the Bulldogs with gusto, and at this early stage in the season he's looking like the buy of the year. The Tigers, much like last season, have started the year well, but face another tough test here. Given the extra two days preparation for the Bulldogs I'm tipping them with some confidence, but I'm not expecting a runaway victory. I'm expecting the Dogs to test the Tigers left edge defence throughout - watch for Brett Morris sniffing around in support when the time is right.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 8

Result - Bulldogs 25 defeated Tigers 24

Newcastle Knights vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

There is a saying in sport - you can only beat the opponent in front of you. The Knights keep doing just that, but doing just that is about to get a lot harder. The Knights scraped home against the Titans, and a week earlier the Panthers beat the Titans 40-0. The Knights just beat the Cowboys, and on current form I'd expect the Panthers to tear the Cowboys apart. A parochial crowd in the Hunter and the sheer size of the Knights across the park keeps them in this contest, but at some point I expect this exciting Panthers backline to fire. Moylan, Mansour, Whare, Idris and Zelezniak - if that isn't the best backline in the NRL it will be by seasons end. The oldest of those five is 24 - we'll see some very exciting football from that group in the years ahead.

Verdict – Panthers by 8

Result - Knights 26 defeated Panthers 14

Cronulla Sharks vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday afternoon – Remondis Stadium

14th plays 15th and the one positive thing I can say about this game is that it will be close. In the end the team that throws this game away the least will prevail. I'm not sure that makes a lot of sense but I'm sticking with it. Kane Elgey gets a chance at halfback for the Titans and I'm sure those big Sharks forwards will let him ease into the game gently. Hyuk Hyuk Hyuk. Ben Barba is out for the Sharks with Wade Seccombe pulling on the six jersey - I doubt it will fit. If you're going to miss one game of footy this weekend I suggest it should be this. Home side by two points, on the back of a silly penalty from Greg Bird or Dave Taylor or both.

Verdict – Sharks by 2

Result - Titans 24 defeated Sharks 22

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday night – WIN Stadium

Keiran Foran and Jamie Lyon return for the Sea Eagles, and they are a much more balanced outfit as a result. They still look one prop forward short of a football team, but I could say exactly the same thing about the Dragons. A lot can change through the course of a year, but it's hard to see either side battling it out with the big guns at seasons end. Manly are still a top eight side, but they'll need to be winning games like this to get there.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4

Result - Dragons 12 defeated Sea Eagles 4

New Zealand Warriors vs Brisbane Broncos – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

Three games down and I haven't got the Broncos right yet, so this prediction should come with a health warning. I'm a bit keen on them here. The Broncos only loss this season was to the Bunnies and there's no shame in that. Their win last week was bordering on clinical, and while everyone is focussing on how poor the Cowboys were, few have given much credit to the Broncos for winning. Consequently they're outsiders across the ditch and the Broncos do love the underdog tag. Ben Hunt was back near his best last weekend and Milford improves every week. All we need is those Kiwis in the Broncos pack to lift in their homeland and give the Broncos backline a platform. Note that Tomkins is out for the Warriors - a major blow.

Verdict – Broncos by 8

Result - Broncos 24 defeated Warriors 16

Sydney Roosters vs Canberra Raiders – Sunday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

I have a large piece of timber at home. I keep it next to the couch in the TV room at 'Casa del Thinker'. It's there because about once a month I tip the Raiders and convince myself to sit down and watch them play. On the opening whistle I retrieve said block of wood and rest it on my lap. I then spend most of the 80 minutes that follow banging my head into it. You'd think I would learn, but the damage to my cerebral cortex caused by season after season of baffling losses by the Raiders has left me unable to learn much at all. Needless to say the timber and my cerebral cortex got quite the workout last Saturday night. I'm still hurting. Raiders don't play em much gooder....me must tip em Roosters.

Verdict – Roosters by 14

Result - Roosters 34 defeated Raiders 6

North Queensland Cowboys vs Melbourne Storm – Monday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

Here comes my Tony Abbott impersonation. "The Cowboys...are favourites....to win this game. In this game..........the Cowboys...........are favourites..................to win". Like most things Tony Abbott says, it doesn't matter how many times I hear it I simply can't believe it. The Storm destroyed the Sharks and the only change to that line-up is an extended bench. I'm stunned and I'm lost for words, except to say that I wish Antonio Winterstein all the luck in the world in his return - a try would be nice.

Verdict – Storm by 10

Result - Cowboys 18 defeated Storm 17

Wally Lewis - round four selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Thursday night or early Friday morning.

  • Eels vs RABBITOHS
  • Tigers vs BULLDOGS
  • Knights vs PANTHERS
  • SHARKS vs Titans
  • Dragons vs SEA EAGLES
  • Warriors vs BRONCOS

I dont think Millard's got anything on Seccombe age 43, changing sports and facing the indignity of wearing a Sharks jumper.

Johnny Ray's picture

Alright. Let's do this thing and let's do this thing right ! Here are all my tips for week four. Congratulations goes out to Wally Lewis and Declan_S for making the top of ladder this week. I also would like to thank Wally Lewis again just for being for Wally Lewis. As guy who made us all fans of rugby league growing up who here then doesn't owe this great man our life ? Yeah let's get on with this week tips :

Rabbitohs - Bunnies underestimated Tigers last week and it shows with their performance in the first half. I don't expect them do that this week against Paramatta Eels playing them at their own home grounds. Rabbitohs by sixteen points. Half time/Full time a certainty.

Bulldogs - Considering how these two teams are playing this will be close game and I won't be surprise if Tigers go to win this. Bulldogs by four points.

Knights - Another close game so I am going to go with the home side here though I won't be surprise if Panthers win this. Knights by four points.

Sharks - According to all the stats Titans should win this game but I'm staying with Sharks to get their first win of season at home. Sharks by eight points.

Dragons - Just read in rugby league weekly it's been 12 years since Sea Eagles last won at Wollongong ! That and what is Wollongong anyway ? Sounds like either something you do on third date or look for on person's profile on Tinder ! Oooo she's into Wollongonging ! Ooo I'm going go contact her now ! Hello is this HotWollongong8969 ? Yeah hey there ! This is Yourasscantgetpregnant82 ! I've ... I've said too much ... Dragons by eight points.

Warriors - Broncos can't win this one and all they have done beating Cowboys like they did last at home week is lulled themselves into a false sense of confidence. The New Zealand Warriors by ten points.

Roosters - Things just keep getting worse for Canberra Raiders. First they lose a game at home they should of won and now they go into a game they have no chance of winning. Roosters by twenty six points.

Cowboys - After losing their first three games of season, premiership favourites, the Cowboys must be praying so hard right now for a win this is how I imagine things must look inside the Jonathan Thurston household on Sunday, the night before big game : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVbdziNwAdQ Yeah, something like that ! Cowboys by two points.

Awesome. Thanks again Thinker. Thanks again everybody ! Good luck with all your tips and Go the Warriors ! Kiwi Power ! Peow ! Peow ! ;-D

christine 's picture

Johnny ray seriously you must be so bored.

The Thinker's picture

Nice pick up Coach....do you think they'll let him wear the gloves?

Coach Potato's picture

South's 1-12 - For as long as Lukes constantly forward passes keep going unchecked there's no reason why they can't break Saint's 11 straight.
Wests 1-12 - I think 6 in front of the premiers after half an hours play (as well as two very near things) deserves a little more cudos
Newcastle 13+ - Declan_S, I think you may be right about being wrong
Gold Coast 13+ If there's a game the NRL/Gold Coast/Refs Assoc. conglomerate can get a result our of, it's this one
Manly 1-12 Will benefit from not having to play at home
New Zealand 13+ Looks like 2009 since they lost at home to The Bronx
Sydney 13+ So long as Ferguson & Pearce haven't been up the Cross all night
Melbourne 13+ Still cuts him deeply that Innisfail junior Billy Slater was not adjudged good enough to join his beloved Cowboys

Coach Potato's picture

I think de Kock's wishes he was using Seccombe's gloves yesterday.

christine 's picture

coach lets agree to disagree about souths , issac luke is the best hobbit in the game .

Coach Potato's picture

Rugby League tribalism and banter, it's the backbone of this great game. I'm sure we're all friends on this page, its all good fun - well, mostly (this tipping seems very serious). I know that I raise my right hand and solemnly swear to give some, cop some, but never take anything personally. So help me Gus.

christine 's picture

coach I promise you I will always take things personally when it comes to issac luke as I said he is the best hobbit in the game : ie short with furry feet but you have to give him credit he gets the job done & he is good a what he does & yes we are all friends on this page as you said but someone has to defend issac he's a hobbit as well as being a kiwi ( sorry johnny ray you know I am also part kiwi too it's nothing personal bro .

Coach Potato's picture

He's a good player but Im happy to think what I think, that himself and Jake Friend throw hell of lot of suspect short passes and as a purist of the game, and not a fan of union, its not easy to watch. Last years preliminary final between the two of them was torture.

newbie from perth's picture

Hi everyone,

A little better again last week with my tipping effort. If the footy gods take pity on me then I’ll pick a perfect round in another 3 or 4 weeks. OK, let’s get into it…

Rabbits - the Bunnies just keep on rolling along don’t they? Nice tough effort last week but I can’t believe it took half an hour for someone to score and when they did it was the Tigers! Early in the week I read somewhere the Eels have some injury concerns but even if they don’t (NRL website shows no outs), I can’t see them causing the Bunnies too much trouble. So far, when they’re challenged in a match, the Bunnies just seem to “step up” a gear and do what they have to. The “Fluffy Ones” for me.

Bulldogs - the Tigers seemed a little inconsistent last week. I suppose it’s not too bad considering all the young blokes they have but not sure it will be enough to topple the Dogs. Mind you, the Doggies did seem to run out of puff towards the end against Manly but I won’t factor that in too much in this game. The Tigers should give ‘em a run for their money but Doggies look like winning this one.

Panthers - the Knights left it late beating the Titans last week. How much was it to do with no Mullen or how much of it was to do with a gallant Titans? Not sure. The Panthers had a red hot go against my beloved Chooks but thankfully my boys came through. Saw some highlights online and the Panthers seemed to be doing everything right but couldn’t quite get it done. This was a tough one to pick but based on last week’s performances, Newbie has to go the Panthers here.

Titans - the Sharks scored a couple of late tries but maybe the Stormers got a bit lazy. Who knows? The Titans had a crack last week and methinks the return of Bird, Taylor and Falloon made a big difference. Both teams winless so far but the Sharks are basically head cases so I’ll be backing the improving (slightly) Titans to notch their first win on Saturday.

Manly - how the hell could Ricky’s mob get 18 in front and end up losing by 2 points? This wonderful game never ceases to amaze me. Sheesh! The video referee decisions never cease to amaze too. That try Manly got last week was “dodgy” to say the least. How can they possibly overrule the on-field decision given the vision they had? Is there a conspiracy here people? That dubious try aside, I still reckon Manly will account for the Dragons away from home. Just a few too many class players for mine.

Warriors - gee whiz, this is a hard one. Johnny Ray, what were your boys doing last Saturday? 22 points up at half-time but “switching off” for most (but not quite all) of the second. What a turnaround from the Broncos. Maybe WB has brought the boys forward in condition a little earlier than I thought. If so, the Warriors should be wary of this game. Then again, the Cowboys were pretty ordinary so how much can we read into Brisbane’s form? As I said, this is a tough one for me to pick. Seeing as they’re at home, Newbie’s tipping the Warriors. Peow! Peow!

Roosters - thankfully the Mighty Chooks bounced back into form (not that we played that bad against Souths) and managed a nice win over the Panthers. Only 8 points but it’ll do me any day. Not sure if Roger Tuivasa-Sheck stopped the Panthers winger scoring in the corner but a nice little leap at full stretch was good to see. Watched some highlights of the game online and the Newbie is liking the look of Blake Ferguson too. Given the fact that an average Canberra somehow lost from 18 points up, this is a no-brainer. The Magnificent Men in Tri-colours for me. Go you Roosters!

Storm - seriously, how can I make a case for the Cowboys? I just can’t do it. Even praying to Baby Jesus and drinking lots of Powerade won’t help (thanks again to Johnny Ray for the laughs, you’re a legend and have a sense of humour that I can relate to). They were very average last week and barring a complete and utter form reversal, they don’t seem to have a snowflake in hell’s chance here. I see they have the Storm this week and then the Panthers and Rabbits after that. Bunker down Cowboy fans, this could get ugly. The Storm were just too good last week, albeit against an average mob, and they have 8 days off. Everything is pointing to an easy (you would assume) win here for the Storm Troopers. Melbourne for me.

Good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Until next week people. Cheers.

P.S. If corn oil is made from corn and vegetable oil is made from vegetables, what is baby oil made from? Hmmm…

The_NRL_Whisperer's picture

Bunnies - Eels will try hard, but they meet the wall. 13+
Bulldogs - Des has a good mob this year, and should win this one, however, if Tigers get an early jump out by 12 points, an upset looms.
Panthers - Knights to drop the ball this week.
Sharks - Golden point, both pathetic, home ground and Sharks more desperate than a coke addict near the white line!
Manly - Saints not good enough to beat this mediocre Manly side.
Broncos - Fine tuned over first 3 rounds enough to win this.
Roosters - Who are Canberra?
Storm - Unless the Townsville heat gets to them, Cowboys just not doing well enough, but maybe the bookies know something we dont?

Coach Potato's picture

Crap. You're right Whisperer $1.92 a piece, Cowboys v Storm. Storm with an unchanged lineup. Thinkster can you ask if Tommy knows anything that he may or may not have heard from Eddy Hayson or Andrew Johns? This isnt a single punchdrunk Cowboys fan throwing his mortgage on the line. This is every betting agency you can find. Looks like Cowboys are set to be on the nose ... for winning??

Coach Potato's picture

.... Hang on. Its the opening market based on form not money. Storm to receive 1.5 points start. C'mon Tommy. Whaddayaknow? At this right I want to sell my house for the Cowboys too

a's picture

It 14th plays 15th not 15th plays 16 in the Sharks vs Titans game

mark ashford's picture

Big congrats to the Thinker and his helper for expanding the comp this year. I'm loving everyone's comments. The "coach" obviously has done his research and johnny ray keeps me grinning. Don't you just love rugby league and it's followers. Who cares if some of the boys have the occasional punch up or a drink or two too many I love the game.
Enough waxing lyrical....this week
Rabbits..who will beat them?
Dogs...play better without Reynolds
Panthers...Knights bubble about to pop
Titans...been unlucky should fire
Manly...too classy for the red v's
Broncos...was last week a fluke?
Roosters....2nd favs for premiership
Storm...something very wrong at the cows

Anyway good luck to you all and Christine I hope you're well.

The Thinker's picture

Thanks a

I looked that up and then wrote the wrong thing anyway. Clearly I'm struggling with the idea of the Cowboys running last.

Error fixed.

The Thinker's picture

Coach,
You can do better than $1.92 if you want to back the Storm. It's got me a little perplexed I have to say.

christine 's picture

thanks mark i'm trying not to let the ms get the better of me .

Baggy_Gee's picture

Hmmm dead last in my other comp, middle of the pack here and watching the back door approach rapidly. Any suggestions anyone?

Eels - I think the Thinker missed the only good reason to back the Eels. Your a passionate member and believe that our forwards are just as good as their's. Go the BOYS.

Bulldogs - A game that I won't have the energy to follow after the exhaustion following game 1 of the round. I think Des has enough to keep those keen young Tigers in their cage.

Panthers - One wild cat caged, I think that this lot will run rampant. Fox in a chook house style.

Titans - Can't see an untried halves combination working for a team who haven't been able to score with all the go forward their forwards have provided. Titan's are starting to settle into a rhythm.

Manly - With Judus Iscariot back along with Kieran Foran (how good is he?). The only way the Dragons can win is a last minute scratching of the team and the reggies back up for a second game in 3 hrs.

Warriors - If they can play for longer than 22 minutes and about 5 minutes in the second half, then Warriors in a canter.

Roosters - Ricky will take the credit for putting the Roosters side together and that will also be his excuse.

Storm - With the prices I have seen for the Storm, put someone else's house on them to take the chocolates.

Coach Potato's picture

No doubt more will come out during the week. Curiously whenever there's a sting, betting agencies will suspend betting until the facts have been revealed. Here there's been no such halt, and so disturbingly what one agency knows, the next agency already knows too. My 50c each way is on some sort of virus that has spread through the camp affecting a large percentage of the squad. It has to be about the Storm. Why they aren't being transparent with rugby league fans, including their own, may be their question to answer sooner or later.

The Thinker's picture

I don't know if there's that much to it Coach.

Often a betting market is priced on what a team is capable of showing us instead of what they have actually shown us.

Some of that pricing has to be based on the idea that 'the Cowboys have to come good at some stage'.

Coach Potato's picture

True, but just like we all have differing opinions on the outcomes of games, wouldnt you think just one bookie might differ and have Storm at their deserved short odds?

Changing tack, I have a feeling about an Indian Kiwi cricket final. Kiwis to finally take the World Cup. Will see. Play ball.

RE:- DANIEL VIDOT

"DANIEL Vidot’s career at the Broncos is all but over with the out-of-favour winger granted compassionate leave after a potential move to premiers Souths collapsed on Wednesday.
The Courier-Mail understands Vidot could leave the Broncos within a fortnight as his management ramps-up discussions with a number of NRL rivals.
The Rabbitohs had made preliminary inquiries into signing Vidot to help ease their backline injury saga, but the premiers have decided against making a formal offer."

"Vidot is contracted to the Broncos for the rest of the season but he is not in Bennett’s future plans. He paid a heavy price for a defensive error in Brisbane’s World Club Series clash, racing off his wing to concede the 78th minute try that almost cost the Broncos victory against Wigan.
Asked about his future at the Broncos, Vidot said: “I don’t want to comment on that, sorry mate.”
While he was inspirational at times on the field last season, the giant winger has had off-field disciplinary problems, which is part of the reason he has slipped in the pecking order.
The Manly Sea Eagles have also been linked to Vidot and may issue a lifeline as winger Jorge Taufua fights for his career following his part in an off-field pub brawl."

Chi Spurga's picture

JAMES Tamou’s career at the Cowboys is at the crossroads with the out-of-sorts NSW Origin enforcer being shopped around to NRL rivals.
The Courier-Mail can reveal three NRL coaches have been offered the services of Tamou as he battles to recapture the form that has put his Origin and Test jumpers in jeopardy.

christine 's picture

i'm told vidot is supposed to be going to titans but I can't say it's certain seeing I never heard that souths were even interested it's all news to me .

Coach Potato's picture

Unlike most other clubs, the Broncos attitude has always been, if you are vaguely interested in joining another club, then you are not 100% committed to the Broncos, and so there's the door, close it behind you, and try not to slam.

I only wish lots of other clubs were equally as strong. Most of the time the player has no interest in leaving at all. They just want to start their own little auction, shopping themselves around and ultimately put pressure on their own club to offer even more than the previous bid, or else.

Three cheers to the Broncos.

mark ashford's picture

Hey Chi Spurga thanks for that info on Vidot. Couldn't work out why he wasn't in the run on. Seems a shame as the Broncs need all the muscle they can get.
Not surprised about Tamou. His heart is not in it these days.
Thanks again mate.

Chi Spurga's picture

Cheers.
VIDOT 'was' playing N0. 8 front row for my local team the Ipswich jets in the QRL.

Hi Christine thanks for asking.
Jack the dog is doing just great. He lives a terrific life.
Eats, sleeps, goes to the beach, sleeps, eats and s--ts. Did I mention sleeps?
If there's such a thing as reincarnation I want to come back as Jack the dog.

christine 's picture

mark you forget I knew that you were in the dog house last year I actually told you to tell your misses that you enjoy spooning the dog & that you'll be back there before you know it , that's why I was asking about the dog I thought he might be getting lonely by now & a i'm proud of you tipping manly the team you hate & loath so much you know hell will freeze over for that good for you .

Shanghai's picture

Hi all, after reading all your words of wisdom, I still have no idea!

Rabbitohs - no reason to not tip the flag favourites

Bulldogs

Panthers in a close one

Sharks - same nickname as my East Fremantle footy team and about the only thing I've got

Manly

Warriors - but will have to play for 80 mins (hmmm, maybe the Broncos after all?)

Roosters - I'd put your house on it

Storm

a's picture

Yep I am same as Wally this is I think I will let it be this weekend

Tailspin's picture

Well I think it about time I hand over bottom place to someone else, maybe, anyway I will have a go.
Rabbitohs on fire by 14
Dogs doing the job by 6
Panthers far to good for the knights by 16
Titans by 4 and I don't know why but I thought they were robbed by terrible refereeing last game and other factors
Eagles by 12
Broncos by 10
Roosters by 20+
And I cant bet against the Cowboys, its time to shine by 2, I hope
QLD trifecta this week
All the best everyone

I hope it is a fantastic week for QLD this week

Tailspin's picture

Yes a we need it, go the cowboys!!!

Graham's picture

Great Comp, but tell me, why most have selected North Queensland Cowboys against Storm, bottom ladder , -48, Storm 5th, + 24, home game or not I am also in North Queensland too, if Cowboys form is a guide, they should not even go close to winning, time will tell :)

Baggy_Gee's picture

I think that everyone is of the opinion that sooner or later the cowboys will come good, just when and where is the question Graham

Steel Panther's picture

Looking forward to the World Cup Cricket final this weekend just as much as the footy. It's shaping up as a great weekend of sport. Enjoying the insight on the Thinker's page.

Rabbitohs - The Eels generally go better at Pirtek and had they been playing anyone other than the red hot Bunnies I might have tipped them.

Bulldogs - The loss of Aaron Woods for the Tigers is a huge blow against one of the best packs in the comp.

Panthers - This should be a close game but I think the Knights are due to drop one. I think the Panthers will be better after their first game last weekend without Jamie Soward.

Sharks - Who do I dislike more? Gallen or Bird?

Manly - I too saw Johnny Ray's stat about Manly's record in Wollongong but it's not enough to sway me.

Warriors - Losing Tompkins hurts the Warriors but the jury is out for me on the Broncos at this stage so I'll stick with the home side.

Roosters - They should win by plenty.

Cowboys - This is the fourth week in a row I've tipped them. Like a mate of mine said it's about time James Tamou started playing footy and stopped worrying about his haircut.

May the best teams win and the referees have little influence this round. Have a good weekend fellow tipsters!!!

Coach Potato's picture

I think Aaron is having Andre Agassi-like hairpiece problems to be honest. He had horrible trouble keeping it together against South's :p

Steel Panther's picture

Yea what's with that Coach. Worst hair in the NRL since Matt King maybe?? Or the Panther hair bears?

Maybe he is letting the Cowboys wi
