* note: team line-ups are subject to considerable change, but will be updated as news filters through.

There has been much discussion about the enormous amount of experience the Queensland side have lost heading into this series. It's true, but let's put some context around that. The Queensland side on Wednesday night have played 84 Origin games between them, while the New South Wales team has played 40. So QLD have more than twice as much Origin experience to draw on (and that is after taking Slater out of the team). There is only one player in the New South Wales seventeen that has been part of a NSW series win – that was Boyd Cordnor, and he played one game in 2014 off the bench. Brad Fittler sees that as a good thing, and he may be right, but he also doesn't know how his 11 debutants will handle the occasion. Most of them will probably be fine, some will shine like diamonds, and some may not. We wait and see. That said, the same can be said for the three (hopefully four) debutants for QLD. We wait and see. Taking away Smith, Cronk, Thurston, Scott and Slater has to make Queensland easier to beat. I'm stupid and my beanie is maroon, but I'm not so stupid (and maroon) that I don't realise that. One thing that no-one has mentioned is the absence of South Sydney Coach Anthony Siebold, who was an important member of the QLD coaching staff last season. We've all seen what Siebold has done with the Rabbitohs this season. There's also been plenty of talk about the NSW centres – Mitchell and Roberts. They're both exciting to watch, but they'll create as many opportunities for QLD with their defensive lapses as they will for NSW in attack. I'm a lot more worried about the speed of Damian Cook from dummy-half. Tedesco, T Trbojevic and Addo-Carr will be ready to follow him through at a rate of knots. This is where NSW wins game one. They won't win by running around QLD, they'll win by running through the middle of them. It's a contest, and we'll have more tries in this game than we usually get in the first game of the series, but NSW will probably score as many or more tries than QLD, and NSW will probably miss less conversions. It hurts...but:

Verdict – New South Wales 26 : Queensland 22

First try scorer – Valentine Holmes

Man of the Match – James Tedesco

Afternoon Folks
I really think that Refs in game one are going to be what we all talk about on Thursday. I am dreading a shitty decision that gives the match to the other team where they should let the match flow.

Anyway, should be a great game lets hope the MCG can be full.

Cheers and go the "BLUES"

BigPeteBx's picture

Good late evening to you Tiger H.
I read, that the refs for Origin 1 will be Ashley Klein and Gerard Sutton. Might not be all so bad, as it is said the two are being rewarded for their consistency, so far this season.
Hmmmm.....consistency has many meanings, but take it from me, Klein hasn't done an Origin since 2013 and that controversial sin-binning of four players.
Keep well mate and Origin 1 being in Melbourne, we might call The Neutral Rubber.
Cheers - Big Pete

Billy Slater out of Origin 1 QLD are not going to win is all I can guarantee

Rocket Ryan's picture

Don't be ridiculous a u can't guarantee anything bringing Darius that way we get dollar for dollar in my opinion

Baggy_Gee's picture

Bring in who? He wasn't in the original squad, he ain't allowed to be drafted, and as for a dollar for dollar thought, thats selling Billy very very short.

Anonymous's picture

No Slater, No Cronk, No Thurston, No Smith.
Imagine calling the Maroons spineless in the sweet sweet knowledge, they know themselves, it's the truth.

tigerholic's picture

Hey Big Pete
Origin is never ever a certainty, regardless of who plays in either side. I have been crushed so many times thinking that it was time for NSW to shine, little things like an unmarked player on the inside but no pass is forthcoming.

Tomorrow nights match will be a tight affair, even with the debutants in the Blues squad, I think their enthusiasm will be too much for the Maroons, especially when the game settles into itself.

I really hope that the Refs don't try and make the match about them, do you think that State of Origin games should be refereed the same as NRL matches in that the play the ball, hand on the ball, offside should be policed closely.

Normally there very few penalties blown, lets hope for a good match and Christ I pray for a NSW victory.

Enjoy the match All

Tiger

Hi Coach oops sorry I mean Anonymous.
If it's really you declare yourself.
Good time to come back as your Panthers are equal leaders.

Coach Potato's picture

haha. I did it. I'm in.
I'm into Coach Potato's account.
Now to have some fun at his expense.

Dragons-fanboy's picture

Hello everyone, how great is it to be origin time. The wait is finally over. Lets bring on game one shall we. My prediction for game 1 is:

NSW 22 - Tries - 2 T.Trobojevic, Addo-Carr, Maloney, Frizell (Conversions Maloney 2/4)'
(Penalty Goals Maloney 1/1)
QLD 6 - Try - Michael Morgan
Conversion Valentine Holmes 1/1

Awesome. Good luck to all with the first origin game. Hope the mighty Blues win. Should be a cracking game. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mark ashford's picture

Why NSW will win.
Maroons have lost about 100 years of origin experience.
Blues have a bigger and tougher forward pack.
Blues have the fastest players.
Gallen isn't playing.
Blues must surely by now be a bit embarrassed.
Why QLD will win.
Because they can.
Score QLD 20 NSW 12
First scorer...any QLDer
MOM....any QLDer
Being serious I believe this will be a ripper of a game and agreeing with others, hope the refs put the whistle away and let it flow.
Blues this is your big chance, Cleary to star for NSW.
Hope there are no injuries and the best team wins!

Dragons-fanboy's picture

Yes I agree with everyone here hopefully the refs put the whistle away but hopefully or not, we've got either Gerard Sutton or Ashley Klein with the whistle on Wednesday night and we all know how much they love the whistle in mouth. Except a lot of penalties and stoppages. All I hope now based on that is no controversy.

Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HA-HA Coach.
Welcome back!
We can resume our rivalry. I promise to keep it nice as long as you do.
Surely there was a bit of tongue in cheek with your SOO prediction.
Lets hear the real Coach divulge his thoughts.

Origin and The Sonic Echo
---------------------------

Wasn't too long ago, I challenged Penrith to take on Qld all by themselves (if you may recall). Afterall I thought, fielding the same no-hopers each year wasn't working, so why not.

I was met with raucous laughter heard from Cape York to Coolangatta.

So tomorrow Penrith challenge Qld, through their go-forward, through the halves, and off the game-breaking bench. We're coming at you from all sides. A Panthers ambush.

Somewhere in deep, dark space, planets are colliding, and if you listen closely, you can almost hear the sound of that same laughter blowing out of Uranus, echoing back into those tortured caulifloured footy ears, Cape to Coolangatta.

mark ashford's picture

Coach, you are an enigma of a tipster. You have 4 hopeful Panthers in the team. Are you being disrespectful to the other NSW teams providing players. Anytime you can promote a Panthers V Qld origin team, which would be a QLD slaughter of the black cats, would be welcome.
Just remember how many series QLD has won in the last 12 years.
How about you stop the crap and give your prediction?

Coach Potato's picture

When Qld go down, and they will,
they can live in the past all they like.
But no one cares about yesterday.
About last week.
It's here and now is what matters.

Nothing else matters but the here and now.

Coach Potato's picture

Get used to it, person of hate.
How ironic that you say it's my comments that are not welcome.
Have a read of your own.

The return of the prodigal potato
You just couldn’t stay in the ground could you
You might be just what this site needs
Your a bit like me you speak your mind which won’t please everyone
I tried but realised I was just playing to the wrong audience I have a pretty good following away from here
Anyway I wish you luck
If you ever want an opinion from a roosters point of view just call out

Coach Potato's picture

No worries, padbul.
I have a pretty good idea if we supported Qld and were talking NSW down, the trolls would be cheering for us. Can't be too hard on them, though. Their hair is kinda cute.

Sorry you feel you were warned off speaking your mind.
Not everyone agrees. Especially when it comes to footy.
Differing opinions should not be made unwelcome opinions.

Bullies, Terrorists, and Trolls.
Treat them the same. Tell them you aren't about to bow down to them anytime soon.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Nice to see you both back. Looking forward to tonight and seeing the changing of the guard for the next decade.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Next we'll see beach castle bluster his way back through the door.

a's picture

I accept the apology Coach I'm glad your back

Coach Potato's picture

no 'a ', you didn't say a thing. You're fine.

Someone else thought it would be nice to call me a scumbag (is all).
Moreso, a bit disappointed since though why no one else has put him in his place, left to defend myself.

Coach Potato's picture

Yay NSW, and boo Qld.
I'm no different to any other New South Welshman.

Just because I write with a bit of flavour, not sure how that equals scumbag.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Could be sandcastles as anonymous. He always had a axe to grind with anyone and everyone.

The inappropriate comment has been removed.

I'm not here all the time...but I will be tonight.

Can you please remove my comment about Coach being Anonymous Thinker

8:13 kick off? Who else doesn't believe that the 8pm kick off is accurate?

The Thinker's picture

Crazy pointless trivia in the lead-up

While the MCG is renowned as one of the most iconic sporting stadiums in the world, the biggest crowd assembled at the venue wasn't for sport at all.

In 1959, American evangelist Billy Graham drew a crowd of at least 130,000, and some argue more than 140,000, to watch a sermon.

Hopefully I experience some spirtual moments tonight.

The Thinker's picture

QLD Coach Kevin Walters had an older brother (Steve) and a twin brother (Kerrod). While the Walters brothers and Allan Langer are regularly referred to as The Ipswich Connection - the Walters twins were actually born in Rockhampton.

In 2016, Kerrod Walters ran for the QLD senate with the Glenn Lazarus Team.

Kerrod secured just 159 primary votes across Queensland. That sounds like a terrible result, but Malcolm Roberts became a senator with just 77 votes (and he's a Pom and wasn't even eligible). Politics is funny....funny and stupid.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Still one of the greatest wins in Origin, the long kick from the scrum base for a try in the dying seconds. That was truly truly awesome second.

mark ashford's picture

Can anyone tell me if the game is live on fox, or do I have to watch #9 and listen to those Muppet commentators.

pabdul's picture

Exclusive rights to 9
Fox replay at 10pm
So you’ll have to watch the muppets
But don’t get agro ...he was on a different show

mark ashford's picture

Thanks Padbul and nice to see you back here.
Loved Jamie Dunn and Agro. He could be a bit naughty at times just like another favourite Dickie Knee.

Baggy_Gee's picture

You can do what we did back in the day. T.V. on, sound off, and Roy and HG talking their usual Sh£t. Shame it is no longer viable, but ABC or Triple M will suffice, Mark.

mark ashford's picture

Thinker thanks for that info on Kerrod. I had no idea he had political ambitions. Perhaps he picked the wrong party. LNP or ALP may have just got him home.

a's picture

I think it’s on Fox

mark ashford's picture

Thanks Baggy, I've found Hadley on local 4BC he's OK

Coach Potato's picture

.. so is Alfie replacing Hunt or not?
