* note: team line-ups are subject to considerable change, but will be updated as news filters through.

For NSW to win this weekend and clinch the series, Blues coach Brad Fittler needs to break something of a hoodoo. With his win on debut as Origin coach, he became the fourth Blues coach in succession to win their first game. The three before him were the late great Graham Murray in 2006, Craig Bellamy in 2008 and Laurie Daley in 2013. All three lost the second game...and the series. He's a pretty cool customer though is Freddie, and all the media attention won't bother him. In game one there were periods of the game where Queensland looked to be dominant, particularly in the middle third. Despite that dominance, the speedsters in the middle for the Blues (Cook, Maloney, Tedesco) still had moments where they broke through...and it proved the difference. I suspect that if the game ran for 100 minutes, the margin of victory would have been larger rather than smaller. Dylan Napa wants to play, and QLD need him, because he's the sort of forward that would have opponents looking out the corner of their eye. Without Napa, the Blues forwards don't have a lot to fear from that QLD pack. Bloody good footballers each and every one of them, but not scary footballers. My hunch (just a hunch) is that Slater won't play either. I'm glad he's in camp, because he's good in front of the cameras, and he can spend some quality time with Kalyn Ponga in the lead-up, but he's not moving freely. I'm excited to see what Ponga can do on the big stage. Those of you that have been following this site for a while may remember that I've been talking him up since his Young Guns days in the Under 23 comp. He's a great talent, and we are lucky to have him in the game (because he did spend two years at an elite rugby school in Brisbane). He is young and I hope he is ready. I hope he shines like a beacon. Hope springs eternal, but I can't see QLD springing an upset. I wanted to name Tedesco as my man of the match prediction again, but they do like to share those honours around. He WILL shine like a beacon, and the Wally Lewis medal is, I suspect, on its way around his neck. QLD have had a tremendous run with a tremendous team for a very long time. This team will compete and they won't be far away, but I fear they will fall short.

Verdict – NSW 24 to QLD 22

First try scorer – Dane Gagai

Man of the Match – Nathan Cleary

Greetings football fans

Feel free to chatter away about Origin here until the lead-up. I should be here during the game too, if anyone wants to chatter away then too,

Morning Thinker

NSW must win game 2, we can't take the decider to Suncorp and expect to win.
I have a mate at work who is a Queensand supporter, we had a bet as we did last year on a per game basis during the season, he wanted a 6 point start and I refused, ended up giving him 2 point start, over all of the dominant years that Queensland have enjoyed, I have never had a start and I think both teams are a equal chance of winning.

I think Slater will pull out by tomorrow night giving Ponga his first start in Origin. He is a star but it is a different game, faster, less penalties, may just test him a bit.

Have a good week.

Tiger

Good morning Tiger/Claws.
NSW will need to win Game 2, as if it goes to Suncorp, resting on the decider, I'm sure Maroons will be playing for Billy, if he has declared retirement in rep footy. All they'll think about is the memories and The Kid.
Cheers mate and stick with your Tigers, you've nothing to worry about.
Look below you and see where my fella's are at.

Cheers Big Pete

Looking forward to Sunday Night. I must say, Manly having a few issues at the moment. They will come through the other side better for it, probably take the title next year.

Take Care

BigPeteBx's picture

Tigerholic - thanks as that's understanding, what others are going through. More than a few Bro, more like a truck load of issues.
$$$'s, player unrest (internal and external of the game), injuries has been our biggest substitute so far this season.

I hope mate, but tell you something, I will be considering more deeply my tipping of them. Like many here, you love your team by the heart, but when tipping is involved, you need to be guided by your head or "gut feel", 50 cent coin or the crystal ball effect.
Its not Jumping Ship, its more, when you are playing for sheep stations.

Cheers and keep well mate - Big Pete in Bx

manyana's picture

Too true, Big Pete. Head & not heart in tipping. Bragging rights you know!!

Coach Potato's picture

Next best thing to a clean sweep would be winning a decider at Lang Park, so Kay Sera Sera.

Coach Potato's picture

Hi Thinker, or anyone else with a thought, what has happened to the Broncos and Origin.
Only 3 players supplied game 1, now only 2. Sure there are plenty of other teams with the quality now, but how many actually from Brisbane? What has happened to the nursery? Surely it’s massive and yet, I don’t think I could name a full squad of 17 current position by position NRL players that hail from Brisbane.

Mary S's picture

Hi Mr Thinker,
You might want to change this:
"State of Origin – Game Two
New South Wales Blues vs Queensland Maroons – Wednesday night – MCG"

Cheers,
Mary

Damn it
The airline tickets I bought for Melbourne are non refundable

Coach Potato's picture

Confusious say too much copying give you big fat pasting.

The Thinker's picture

Heh Heh....I'm an idiot.

I will fix now.

mark ashford's picture

Hi Coach
Yes at times the Broncs have supplied 50% or more for the Qld team.
Their performance this year is nothing to crow about just hanging onto 8th spot. As a one team town with a huge feeder area they should never be worse than top four. The Bennett/Bellamy saga over the past weeks may have been unsettling. Maybe time for Wayne to retire.
There was a time players would stay at the club just to be a Bronco.
Now money talks. Perhaps the Broncs need to look at their recruitment people. Other than that I haven't got a freeking clue.

The Annoying Devil's picture

The reason the Broncos are struggling is because they lost a good half in Hunt and picked up a lemon in Bird
So the best option was to put Nikorima and Milford together and it hasn’t really worked
I remember reading they didn’t have one try assist between them after 5 rounds
Great individual players but lack direction as a halves pairing

The Thinker's picture

There's been a few head elsewhere in recent times and do okay.

Ben Hunt, Corey Norman ???, Ashley Taylor, Jake Granville, Jarrod Wallace, Jai Arrow...there are probably others I can't recall.

Luke Keary wanted to be a Bronco...but at the time there were so many good ones in front of him he couldn't get in.

You can't keep them all.

The Panthers have copied the Broncos blueprint for junior development...and they're doing okay. I'm sure Coach will thank them for all the help if they win a premiership.

manyana's picture

Hi thinker, thanks for your offer. I'm happy to do that as long as Mark is ok with it.
Would love to have you join us for coffee.
Bet you didn't catch too many fish at Bribie.
I think there's only one out there & he's VERY fat and well fed. Ha ha.
By the way, how do we contact you privately?
Cheers, manyana.

BigPeteBx's picture

Private contact Manyana is easy peasy.
Once you both agree, Thinkers sends one, or both of you, one of the others home email addresses, via your home In Box.
The get in contact is simple after that!
I reckon its more private and better than the world knowing it all, via F/Book.

Its something that Coach could have done, if he came to Bx.
He could keep his mashed potato or chips and I would have bought him lunch, with a chilled ale.
Cheers "Miss" Manyana - Big Pete in Icy Bx

manyana's picture

Thanks Big Pete, will wait for the Thinker & Mark to respond.

mark ashford's picture

Hi Manyana. I'm not on face book. Got off years ago as I thought it a bit intrusive. After our posts I'm sure Thinker will see we are no threat to each other and provide a contact to either you or me.
Looking forward to catching up, a nice coffee at Bellas or the Coffee Club. I too live at Bongaree and my brother has just moved into GemLife
We love it here and will never move.
I fish as often as wind permitting in a friends boat and catch heaps of whiting. Would be a pleasure to share with you and your partner.

BigPeteBx's picture

Sounds nice up there Mark.
Also sounds like The Seekers - "We shall not be Moved"
Hummin folks.......
Cheers and keep well - Big Pete in Bx

mark ashford's picture

Big Pete, it's more like "there's a new world somewhere" and I'm sure it's here on Beautiful Bribie.

manyana's picture

Very true Mark.

manyana's picture

Hi Mark, yes, Bellas or the Coffee Club would be fine.
So when Thinker gives either of us email addresses, I'm sure we can find a day & time suitable to both of us.
Cheers, Manyana.

The Annoying Devil's picture

I’m talking about short term
The players you’ve mentioned have left over a period of time all clubs have gains and losses but in the broncos bulldogs and others it’s called bad player recruitment and management

Brad S's picture

The Broncos form has been so ordinary this year. The games they have won haven't been convincing and luck has been on their side for a few of those wins. They've got a young forward pack full of potential stars coming through but chances are they will lose a few of them with so much money being tied up on Boyd, Bird and Milford who have all seriously underperformed this year (injuries haven't helped them). Gillett has been a great servant during his career but upgrading him to a rich contract for a further four years starting 2019 was a ridiculous decision.
Milford needs a quality halfback by his said that can manage the team so he can go back to being a running 5/8 and there's no top quality halves on the market for next year so I'm expecting another mediocre season for at least next year.
Wayne and the Broncos recruitment and retention have made a real mess of things.

pabdul's picture

The twins are spot on
TAD & BRAD

The Thinker's picture

TAD,

I hear you...I was responding to Coach a little earlier.

And I agree with Brad S. Some lucky wins this season. They don't look like a premiership contender and I doubt they have the cattle this season to change that.

Brad S's picture

What do NSW supporters think of Matt Prior getting picked in the front row ahead of Ryan James? Prior is consistent and always gets the job done but so does James while offering a bit of x-factor with having a knack of finding the try line. As a QLD supporter, I'd rather be facing Prior than James.
Sims is unlucky. His form has been amazing this and he's a real hitman but unfortunately for him, he is better suited to the back row.

Coach Potato's picture

Forgive me for steering your mini buses away from the median strip, but I wasn't referring to how the Broncos are going in the comp (at all).

What I am asking is, where are the Origin players from Brisbane's glut of juniors? 'Can't keep them' all is not cutting and pasting a very good explanation Thinker, because only half a dozen names came up, and half of those aren't even Origin players. It hardly paints a believable picture of the nationwide leaders on the junior development front.

For all it seems, Brisbane's junior system is not producing very much. Logic has it auguring poorly for Qld's Origin future in the short to medium term.

mark ashford's picture

Coach I could ask you the same question. Where are all the Soo players coming from Penrith.

Coach Potato's picture

We have more from our one suburb Sydney club represented than your State Capital team.

Not a very knowledge based comeback.

The Annoying Devil's picture

Brad
You answered it yourself prior is more consistent and being 1 up that’s what we need. If your 2 down then you blood James
James has the X factor but we have enough try scoring ability already and he can give away a penalty which could be costly
This will be a one off series for prior and James 5 years his junior will get a shot next time

Brad S's picture

I think you’re right there, TAD. Good to see Prior get a call up at such a later stage in his career.

Coach, can’t argue that it seems that the Broncos system is producing less stars than in the past. Along with a smaller amount of talented juniors coming through, another issue is that a lot of players haven’t improved or have gone backwards (Milf) since 2015. While other players have moved to other clubs to be given more minutes and improved out of sight.

Between Payne Haas (Titans/Broncos junior), Jaydn Sua, David Fifita and potentially Corey Paix there’s some bright talent on the way but not the same quantity as in years gone by.

Coach Potato's picture

Thanks Brad S.

That's what I thought, but needed to hear it from the other side of the fence to be sure.

mark ashford's picture

Coach don't lick your lips too soon. I've heard their are some great juniors coming into the Broncs camp who will excel at origin level sooner than later.
You may well think you will win this series but beware the wounded Maroons, they have a habit of biting your arse when you think you are home & hosed.

a's picture

Here are my scores

NSW 24 tires Nathan Cleary 2 Tom Trojevic goals James Maloney 4/4 QLD 16 tires Valentine Holmes Ben Hunt Josh McGuire goals Valentine Holmes 2/3

manyana's picture

Hi a, good luck with those scores. I think it might be the other way round. Good luck with the Blues.
GO QUEENSLAND!!
Tee hee! Manyana.

Coach Potato's picture

I'm all for both States fielding high class teams year in year out.
You would have to say though, the Maroons will be rebuilding for a while.

Reminds a lot of when Warne and McGrath retired from international cricket. Summer of 2006/2007. That team has never been able to replace those two. They've had a few wins here and there, but never dominated world cricket since. The debacle recently only adds weight to the fact they continue to be outcompeted by previously vanquished opposition.

Coach Potato's picture

Good luck to Australia tomorrow night against Princess Mary's second team. After a loss game 1, you will normally need at least a win & a draw from the last two games - minimum. Obviously a win, gives more hope for game 3 then a draw.
So 2-0 Australia. Repeat. 2-0.

I must say, just a little disappointed that Russia World Cup 2018 has been shunned from this corner of the internet, when the Rio Olympics, 2016 was given such adulation. Soccer, of course, is one of it's medal events, although for anyone who was unaware, each country is only allowed a spec of professional representation at the Olympics. The Olympic version just doesn't compare to a World Cup. It's the cheapest of chalk compared to the most exquisite of cheeses.

So disappointing.
So ironic.
So disappointingly ironic.

Coach Potato's picture

.. Subcorp, the place where the home side fields a team full of subs.

mark ashford's picture

Coach you have sent a spy into Qld in the form of a big black cat.
Watched the #7 interview this morning and believe some Mullumbimby Madness may have intervened.
I must admit I've seen some big feral cats but no panthers.
Subcorp? Subcorp? don't align the Qld team with a poor sub editor of a regional paper.

Coach Potato's picture

Panthers have unfinished business at Subcorp.

The first time in 109 years of footy that a try got called back because two defenders bumped heads.

We aren’t forgetting anytime soon.

mark ashford's picture

Coach we will welcome you to Subcorp oh sorry Suncorp in round 19.
Better bring your best game as Qlders love stamping out feral cats.

christine's picture

"a" What happened to supporting QLD in origin ???

Coach Potato's picture

Support for Qld is not lacking.
It's the support for Australia that is sadly lacking at the moment.

mark ashford's picture

Coach don't denigrate the people on this site for not getting fully behind the Socceroos. I'm certain we would all like to see some wins but we are minnows in the "world game". No doubt as the game grows here and it will we will be a force to contend with.
For me in my retirement the NRL and SOO will do.
I know that may be a small minded attitude, but hey that's me.
By the way I don't like cricket or tennis so suffer withdrawal over the summer months.
Cheers mate and keep up your passion.

a's picture

I just don't think they will win that's all I hope Im wrong

Coach Potato's picture

You're entitled to your opinion, a.
Good on you for looking at the game without bias.
Sorry if you feel like some kind of traitor.

mark ashford's picture

Coach have you ever looked at the game without bias?
"a" is no traitor and I'm sure he doesn't need you telling him so.
There are two teams on the paddock on Sunday night and it's anyone's game.
