The off-season

Greetings football fans.

For those of you hoping to stay in touch between now and season 2019...here is the place to do so.

All things sport and anything else for that matter. There won't be a massive number of people around in the off season, but those that are usually pretty good value. I'll drop in from time to time myself, for what it's worth.

All the best.

In other news What do you think of Homes going to NFL

christine 's picture

"a"
Gallen is calling for holmes to be banned from returning to nrl from nfl for life but who's in charge of the nrl Paul gallen or Todd Greenberg ???

mark ashford's picture

Hi again Chris
I'm not a Gallen fan but certainly understand where he's coming from.
The Sharks brought Val Holmes through their training system and are no doubt in a big way responsible for his success as a player.
Valentine has a year to go on his contract with the Sharks but is happy to walk away for a dream with the NFL. Look what happened with J Hayne. Valentine also has connections with the QLD origin team.
I'm always sorry when a "talent" developed by the NRL goes to another code.
Gal was approached many times by rival clubs with big money but chose to remain a Shark. Gotta admire him for that.
Club loyalty is a thing of the past. I remember when players would play for the Broncos (or any other club) just to be there.

Mark
Thanks mark I do appreciate the fact that other people care & that they are not afraid to speak up in defence of others , I've also been told my father has meet a women around his age so I have only seen him once since Friday he has been staying with her every night since then I have met her she is of Scottish decent but certainly doesn't sound Scottish at all , she comes across to me as being very reserved so my father is being on his best behaviour right now but when I had treatment at the hospital the other day he carried on the whole time I was there purely because he didn't want to be there but either did I then the next day my face went bright red all day which I have since been told was a side affect to the treatment any way glad to see you back on site mark speak to you again ...

The Thinker's picture

I'll leave the Hayne thing alone given there are criminal proceedings, but I will say that for many years now he's been a liability for whatever club has signed him.

A shame really...because for about 8 weeks he lit up the game.

As for Valentine Holmes...I thought he was going home to Townsville because he and his partner were homesick. The NFL is a long way from home.

christine 's picture

I'm with you on the Holmes matter there Thinker I thought he was going to the cowboys as well ...

christine 's picture

Mark
I understand what you are saying about gallen but it's not up to gallen if a player goes to another code to see how they go or not fafita pledged his loyalty to another code he's still playing gallen didn't sop him coming back , ben barba did what he did sharks said they would take him back but he is going to cowboys instead of Cronulla so is gallen going to get ben barba banned for life I do understand what your saying about holmes owing his loyalty to them because they brought him through the ranks but does that mean you are stuck playing with only the very first team you ever started playing with as a junior because you would never get to test your value on the market if that was the case ?

Mary S's picture

Hi Christine and Mark,
I found the following extract on Holmes telling -

"However, a condition of his release from the remaining year of his contract with Cronulla is Holmes can only play for the Sharks if he is unsuccessful in the NFL and wants to come back to the NRL next season.

To accommodate the possible return of Holmes, the Sharks will need to leave room in their salary cap for him and his value is such the club confirmed he had been offered a five-year deal that would have made him the highest-paid player in Cronulla’s history.

The clause ensures Holmes is unable to join the Cowboys next season, as some suspected he may have been intending to do if he fails to land an NFL deal but also casts doubt about the Sharks' ability to replace him."
Link - https://www.nrl.com/news/2018/11/20/how-valentine-holmes-nfl-release-dem...

Perhaps the above is a contributing factor in Gallen's comments, as he would wont the best possible team, in what could be his possible approach to retirement, and the chance of a big win before he does so.

Certainly, over the years, attitudes have changed in so many aspects of life, and loyalty to a job/employer or team, has been part of that change.
Contributing to this change, I feel, is the speed of communications and the influence of social media over the years.

When you look at the injuries that players can sustain in sport, and the possible life span we can currently enjoy, it is easier to appreciate that a player's decision to follow the money while he/she is able physically, can affect one's loyalty.

One might say - "An unfortunate sign of the times"

Cheers to all,
Mary

christine 's picture

Mary s
Hi mary I agree with you whole heartedly but these days a contract has no meaning & when a club no longer wants you they in courage you to go look else where but if you do it before your expire date with said club then your fround appon for leaving so it's a no win situation in nfl the players get paid ridiculous $$$ that they would never see here & there are only so many years you can play that sort of sport be it nrl or nfl so you have to make the most of it while you can either way someone won't be happy just my opinion ...

mark ashford's picture

Hi Thinker
Thank you for a level head (and Baggy too) lets leave it to the NSW Police to sort this out. Jarryd was exceptional in his early days at Parra and NSW origin. Just hope the correct justice prevails. The Media put him on a pedestal and now want to crucify him. Fame can be such a short lived thing.

mark ashford's picture

Hi Mary S & Christine
I guess we can talk about contracts until the cows come home.
Be it players or coaches nothing these days is set in concrete.
It's easy to criticize some ones decision but should we deny a dream of one of our best players?
Succeed or fail Valentine is following a dream. I hate to see NRL lose him but we should allow him back if he wants to.
Maybe the NRL needs to look at the contract system and insert some form of enforcement. BUT would you want a coach or player being forced to honour a contract?? The answer is not easy.

a's picture

I think that Homes should be allowed back in the NRL

christine 's picture

Mark
In regards to forcing a player to stay bound to there contract is it better to hold them to there contract so they start playing really bad so you say there no good get rid of them or releasing them from there contract to go else where so you can replace them with someone else who is happy to at least have a contract & play good for there team ?

a's picture

In other news Cameron Smith has asked for a 2 Year extension what do you think of that

christine 's picture

"a" Cam smith is actually giving storm an ultimatum either you give me a two year extension or i'm leaving ...

christine 's picture

Gallen wants to ban holmes from coming back to the nrl for life if he goes to the nfl that's a bit hypocritical coming from a drug cheat ...

christine 's picture

Mark
All i'm saying about this jarryd matter is the police have done what they had to do now it's no longer up to them it's now up to the courts unless they prove jarryd is innocent then the girl in ? is in trouble with the police for lying to them about it & yes of course the media is having a field day with it , it's news that's there job & was it really the media that put jarryd on a pedestal because I always thought it was jarryd who put jarryd on a pedestal no offence intended there by saying that baggy so please don't take it that way but jarryd does have an ego as we all know so lets just see how this all plays out but I think as others have said they will find parra will be better off without him ...

The Thinker's picture

I wonder what Jarryd Hayne might have done if he were at a club that was a little more 'professional'. I'm not saying Hayne shouldn't take responsibility for his own choices...I just wonder if he would have been a little more grounded (and worked harder) at a club like the Broncos, Storm or Roosters. I could name other clubs, but those three stand out I think.

mark ashford's picture

Thinker
How can you bag Parramatta for J Hayne's behavior? A stronger Coach Bellamy, Bennett, Robinson or Macgregor may have had some influence but J Hayne's ego was from early days out of control.
His manager has a lot to answer for but I don't think anyone could have changed where Jarryd was headed.
Had he stayed with Parra and just played to his ability none of us would be talking about him now.

christine 's picture

Mark
re in regards to your post to the Thinker it's not entirely true that we wouldn't be still talking about jarryd if he just stayed at parra & played because we still be talking about his inflated ego & his lack of ability to train / be a team player...

mark ashford's picture

Hi Christine
I'm done talking about J Hayne. Lets let the coppers deal with it.

christine 's picture

Mark
Hi & yes I agree except it's the courts not the police that have to deal with it is all I was trying to say the police have already done there side of things now the court has to do there's ok ...

christine 's picture

Mark
That's all I was actually saying all along that there side of things has been done now it's up to the court ...

christine 's picture

You won't get an nother word from me until jarryd has been to court i'm not allowed an opinion ...

mark ashford's picture

Christine, my friend you are welcome to post any opinion you have on any subject.
What about this....Bennett will coach the Broncos in 2019 forcing Siebold to coach the Rabbits in the same year.
This has to be some sort of a joke. Apparently Bennett wouldn't agree to a payout offered by the Broncs so is staying put.
Does the NRL have no say in this? from what I've heard the Broncs fans want him gone.

tuisova's picture

We lost against Fiji and they've past us in IRB rankings.

Terribles times for French rugby.

a's picture

I wish the Bennett and Siebold swap will happen now

Baggy_Gee's picture

The NRL has no say, it will all be based on the signed contract. If there is reasonable grounds to terminate, both parties have to agree. Bit if the Broncos are trying to save some cash why should he accept it. Paul White should have "accidentally" ran in to Siebold during magic round and had a very quiet word about the 2020 season. The media will play this up all year long, with snarky comments about who is going to jump ship.

christine 's picture

Mark
There are two people that aren't happy about bennet going to souths Darius & Roberts , Roberts has said if bennet goes to souths he will go back to titans probably because under seibold he will have to get off the grog & coke ...

christine 's picture

Mark
My ? to you or anyone else for that matter is where will shaun Johnson end up at the moment there saying Cronulla what do you think or anyone else who has an opinion on it ?

mark ashford's picture

Baggy it was reported in local media that the Broncs made a profit of $33 mill this season, more than almost all the other clubs put together, prompting calls (again) for a second club in Brisbane. The Broncs, for obvious reasons, will oppose this but I believe it's time. The NRL are looking hard at it, so we'll see what happens.
Surely with this money (cap not involved) Wayne could have been paid out and some sanity prevailed. It's not about contracts just purely money. Seriously why would Bennett want to stay if it wasn't about the cash.

mark ashford's picture

Chris
I believe Darrius has confirmed he will stay at the Broncs for the rest of his career. Not too long now as he is aging and injury prone.
Your comment about Roberts is a bit harsh. Are you saying the Broncs ignore a drug & alcohol problem? I don't think so.

mark ashford's picture

THINKER
Being a Roosters man (and a Maroons supporter) can you explain Dylan Napper maybe the best QLD enforcer being released from your Roosters to join the Dogs on a 3 year deal. Why on earth didn't the Broncs/Cowboys/Titans get a shot at him.
AND why did the Dogs release Klemmer arguably their best player to the Knights on a 5 year deal.
With Josh Maguire going to the Cowboys I would love to see Napa at the Broncs.
Any insight would be appreciated.

christine 's picture

Mark
No that's not what I was saying about Roberts & broncos I was actually trying to say I don't think seibold will put up with it & I know last time Roberts had a problem with it he took himself off to rehab but if your a coach & you have a player you rely on are you going to be happy with them if they have to go off to rehab instead off playing or training that's what I mean I don't think that's being to harsh seeing he does have a history of it with more than one club now ...

a's picture

I say Shaun Johnson will end up at Raiders

Baggy_Gee's picture

I know that's what make the whole thing frustrating. Why can the Board sort themselves out and not derail any hope of a good 2019 season with constantly questioning who is going where in 2020 when Wayne leaves. After the rubbish few seasons we have had, it does distract from the football when no one is willing to talk football and the game that just occurred, let alone are the players tanking because someone is winding them up.

christine 's picture

I hate the off season we still have months of this yet ...

christine 's picture

Now widdop wants out of his last 3 years of his contract to return home but dragons have said no to releasing him ...

mark ashford's picture

Baggy I can't agree more. All the nonsense about coaches and players moving where ever they want despite contracts being in place.
What we want as fans is a bit of stability and something to look forward to next season.
Tavita Pangai Junior ( a Broncs superstar) has declared his loyalty to your Blues next year as he should, he played his junior footy at Newcastle. Just another problem for my Maroons.

mark ashford's picture

Chris,
Not sure where you get your info from but it's usually pretty accurate.
If Widdop leaves the Dragons then they are in trouble as I don't see Ben Hunt saving them maybe if they picked up Shaun Johnson all would not be lost.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Kind of happy about TPJ being a Blue, but saddened by the fact he turned his back on Tonga. Can't blame him for chasing the cash especially if like Sami he has family at home living on fish and bread in a one room hut. Todd needs to enforce more of the honor to play for country than state and flip the payments, and the NRL needs to pay Fiji, Tonga, and other Oceanic nations a fair amount so that the best Islanders represent their place of birth without compromising their earning potential. Hope the pre-season quietens down for you Bronco supporters and the Courier Mail finds something else to focus on. Where is Jason Ackermanis these days?

Baggy_Gee's picture

I don't want to bash Ben, but when it was time to go when Widdop busted his shoulder, he wasn't to bad. Maybe ignore Johnson, and promote a U20's "cheapie" and let Ben run the show with junior doing a Sandow, not the bad stuff, but the unpredictable chip and chase, or the dummy half dash.

mark ashford's picture

Steel Panther
My new NZ friend. Why on earth would the Warriors release Johnson.
Arguably your best. I know he runs hot and cold but on his day is equal to or better than any half in Aussie. The Warriors have a style of play that suits him as he has proved. The Sharks play a different game and may stifle his attacking options. Paul Gallen runs the game and forwards rule. Shaun should stay at home or select a different club.

mark ashford's picture

Baggy
Is Jason Ackermanis still a force? I followed him in Brisbane and then at the Dogs in Melbourne. With his bleached head and agro play reminded me a bit of Warrick Capper. Really wanted him to succeed at the Dogs as they are my Victorian favs. Didn't happen as the Dogs won their premiership after he had gone, think it was 50 odd years since their first one.

mark ashford's picture

Baggy
I would like to see a list of players for the Broncs and their coaching staff before Christmas as I'm sure most people would in relation to their teams. Not too much to ask.

Steel Panther's picture

Hey Mark...trust you are well and back into the swing of things on Bribie...I'm not sure what to make of the release of Shaun Johnson but most here think he has under delivered for the club. Hot and cold and in and out of games and often awol when it really counted.

Below is a link to a local article. Posting a happy face picture of yourself signing your release form in my opinion is thumbing your nose at fans. I think he thought he'd never see the day when the club told him to shop around elsewhere so he spat the dummy.

Where did I get my information on widdop it was on the home page of nine msn plus my father said he also heard about it on tv & it was on the radio so that would be for him talking sport he always listens to graham hughes , peter tunks , robbo ,& at the bottom of this page there is an article that says widdop refuses to guarantee his future at the dragons beyond 2019 if you care to have a read of it ...

christine 's picture

Mark
Above where I said tv that would be fox sport ...

christine 's picture

Mark
If you scroll to the bottom of this page where it says more nrl news if you click on it on page two about half way down you will see an article on widdop asking dragons for a release so read that then tell me i'm wrong with my info ...
