The off-season

Greetings football fans.

For those of you hoping to stay in touch between now and season 2019...here is the place to do so.

All things sport and anything else for that matter. There won't be a massive number of people around in the off season, but those that are usually pretty good value. I'll drop in from time to time myself, for what it's worth.

All the best.

Hi Chris
I love the "talkin sport" guys used to listen to them when I lived on the Gold Coast. They are of course "Blues" supporters but I didn't mind that as they are all x NSW players. They are also funny and well informed.
Think I just saw a report that Widdop has agreed to play 2019 with the Dragons but who knows after that.

christine 's picture

Mark
Widdop has guaranteed 2019 but he won't gurantee anything beyond that & yes my father is a nsw supporter which makes it interesting when it comes time for origin In this house as I am a QLD supporter & my dad & my mum on some state of origin nights used to go to a restaurant near our house & have dinner with the guys from talkin sport but they haven't done that for a while now seeing mum died . ...

christine 's picture

Mark
A few days ago widdop did say he wanted out of dragons to return home from being home sick then it changed to I will see out 2019 but I won't gurantee beyond that so the people higher up have played there part I'd say ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

That would be great, a defined list for 2019 from each club and with it a schedule of payments released to the NRL to count, including TPA arm length or not.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Mark, Jason was there as a walking headline at times which would distract the papers from idle speculation about player movement from the Broncos in 2020. He was a great player and the midfield unit the Lions had 1998-2003 was awesome in its strength.

mark ashford's picture

Well guys & gals the Bennett/Siebold swap won't happen until 2020.
Mal Meninga has backed Bennett to bring the big trophy to the Broncs in 2019. I'd like to get hold of a little bit of what Big Mal is smoking these days.

a's picture

I think the Bennett/Siebold swap should Happen now

mark ashford's picture

Hi "a"
It's all too late. Bennett at the Broncs and Siebold at the Bunnies next year. The person I feel most sorry for is Siebold. The Bunnies wanted him gone but now must face a season with him as coach. How is that going to work. If Bennetts greed is behind this then the NRL has lost me.

manyana's picture

Hi everyone, I don't usually comment on these things but.....Bennett seems to be the one everyone is blaming for this fiasco, but whether it's the money involved or not, he's the one honouring his 2019 contract!!
Other coaches & players are not honouring their contracts.
Perhaps some of them could take a leaf out of Wayne's book!!
Cheers, Manyana.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Is there any truth to the fox sport rumours that Wayne has been axed?

a's picture

Guess what Mark looks like Bennett has been sacked so looks like the swap is happening

manyana's picture

News straight from the courier mail.
Wayne Bennett has been sacked by the Broncos, with his replacement Anthony Seibold to hold his first Brisbane training session on Monday morning.
Cheers, Manyana.

christine 's picture

Mark
How do you feel about todays news , all I can say is don't hate seibold with the right team line up he might just get you a premiership ...

christine 's picture

Rocket ryan
Where the bloody hell are you ???

mark ashford's picture

Where did this come from?
Bennett held a press conference yesterday saying he was staying at the Broncs, now it appears he is gone. If this is correct I'm happy.
Anthony Siebold will bring a new head to the Broncs and maybe more success. I wish the Bunnies well with their new "super coach" the Burgess boys will be happy.

a's picture

The chief made the decision

Baggy_Gee's picture

That'w why I was asking Mark, usually if your a member they give you the inside line. If true, it does solve one of the massive issue that was going to be plaguing the team this year, players futures. I also saw the new conference you mentioned yesterday too.

mark ashford's picture

Baggy
I'm not a Broncos member or shareholder, just a fan.
Get my info from the media or the NRL site like most of us.
Looking forward to seeing what Siebold will bring to my team.
Good fortune to your Eels, Baggy and may the Media leave them alone.

Baggy_Gee's picture

May the media leave all our teams alone except for reporting the score and game. I hope that it was mutual and not as I read this morning that Wayne was going behind everyone's back and setting up the Bunnies while neglecting the Broncos. But it's solved, we'll see if either coach has the credentials in 2019.

re: Broncos and Rabbitohs

It's hardly an ideal way for either team to start a campaign...but at least it's over now and both clubs know what the heckity heck is going on.

Two of the most important clubs in the NRL here.....as a fan of the game I want them both doing well in 2019.

mark ashford's picture

Thinker & Baggy
Thank heavens this horrible saga is over, I hope. Just want to see both teams perform to their best next year. Read in the Bris Courier Mail that several old Broncos players were already firing barbs at Siebold.
This is starting to sound like the LNP who are on a destruct mode.
Wake up, give him and your club some support, you fools.

Steel Panther's picture

Mark...what's the beef with Siebold with regards to the old Broncos players?

mark ashford's picture

Hi Steel
As you no doubt know Bennett took the Broncs to all of their premiership wins. No other coach has had a win for the team.
As happens in most NRL clubs the old players hang around, some in paid positions (not coaching) and some just "hanging around"
Some of these guys who used to play with Kevvie Walters wanted him to get the job. Kevvie won his first Origin series in 2017 inheriting a super team from Mal Menniga. In 2018 he went down 1-2 to the Blues after 4 or 5 superstars retired.
I personally think Kevvie would be a good coach for the Broncs but really want to see everyone give Siebold a crack.
His Rabbits finished well above the Broncs this year.
The Broncs/Rabbits don't meet until round 8 and it's a home game for the Bunnies. Fireworks? or just a good game, we'll have to wait and see.

a's picture

Rabbitohs may have finished well above Brisbane but Brisbane did beat than twice

mark ashford's picture

"a" yes that did happen but other teams beat my Broncs when they shouldn't have. The Dragons (who the Broncs have beaten easily in the last couple of years) gave them an absolute caning this year.
Broncos need a big wake up if they are to compete in 2019 and maybe just maybe Siebold is the man to do it.

christine 's picture

Mark
If I may say to you in regards to seibold if the players gel as a team a strong team that make up for each other mistakes so there is no cracks or room for error then seibold is your man , he will get the best out of the team ...

a's picture

Mark yes I know that Broncos have lost games they should have not Like Dragons Manly Cowboys Titans and Knights but hey this can make up for

Beat Roosters Rabbitohs and Sharks twice beat Warriors in NZ and put 50 on the Panthers

Witch is more than I can say about the Cowboys

christine 's picture

D DAY TOMORROW FOR JARRYD HE'S IN COURT ...

mark ashford's picture

Hey guys
Just got home from a weekend on the Gold Coast helping my 26 year old daughter move house to the 7th floor in a Robina apartment block.
Couldn't get the truck into the underground parking so had to carry everything about 100 metres to the front door and then try and get it in the lift. Why do kids insist on buying king size beds when they are only 5.5 feet tall? Ok the boyfriend is a bit taller but really.
A gallon of sweat later they are in and happy.
Went out for a delicious Italian dinner afterwards paid for by dad of course but couldn't be happier.
If you don't love your kids, then you have nothing.

Good evening all my great Thinker Buddies.
Well, well, well you save - where have you been.
Certainly haven't been to visit The Queen. I'll be here in short as I've been suffering with glare on one of my eyes and back in for some laser surgery mid January which should hopefully correct things that can open from the previous two ops I had.
Lots happening - I've been getting a new side fence at residence done and doing some manual hard labour in doing so. Went to Singleton and Kurri Kurri a few weeks ago, where we have some family. Lost an aunt here locally, last week, she would have been 100 in January.

I've been reading about what you all write and agree with many things said. Manly might be a sign for improvement with Des back. Remember he's struck NRL gold there before. Change is better than a holiday, some say. Seibold will need to put the cleaners through Broncos to get some of them out of laze syndrome. Will be interesting to see who is next with salary cap investigation, as there are players going in all directions and dollar value increases.

We have friends Mark I believe who are now at Bribie now. I thought they were at Hervey Bay. he used to be the BBQ Butcher at Robina. Bit of a mad fisho as well. If ever u r speaking with a Wendy and Greg - you're on the money, as they know me/us well here in Bx.

Gotta Go my great friends - luv yuz all. How good is Jeff Horne.
Talk again before Chrissy during the day, when I can get rid of lights.
Cheers, keep well and take care Cobbers - Big Pete in Bx.

Hayne has just pleaded not guilty and is due to appear back in court on Feb 13

Christine 's picture

Jarryd can plead not guilty all he likes but there are witnesses to him being there & leaving firstly the taxi that took him there & waited for him & the girls mother was home when jarryd arrived & when jarryd left so he can say what he likrs but they csn prove he was there .

Christine 's picture

That eas supposed to read he can say what he likes but thry csn prove he was there .

christine 's picture

That was meant to read hayne can say what he likes but the taxi driver who is a witness knows he was there & so does the girls mother who was home when hayne arrived & left in the same taxi he arrived in ...

christine 's picture

Won't that be interesting that hayne goes back to court here for this case on feb 13 but his case in America is in January , jarryd may just be in a bit of trouble ...

mark ashford's picture

Big Pete
We are getting a nice little gathering here on Bribie. Do you know if Wendy & Greg are operating in the meat business here or are retired?
Mate I'd love to track them down as I remember the BBQ butcher at Robina. May have done some advertising for them while working at the GC Bulletin.
Meanwhile get those eyes right mate, we will meet in the not too distant future and I'd like you to see me in my Broncs shirt.
I'll come down your way sometime next year and if Thinker can exchange our email addresses, I'd love to catch up for a beer or two.
Cheers and keep well.
