The off-season

Greetings football fans.

For those of you hoping to stay in touch between now and season 2019...here is the place to do so.

All things sport and anything else for that matter. There won't be a massive number of people around in the off season, but those that are usually pretty good value. I'll drop in from time to time myself, for what it's worth.

All the best.

To all still having a look at Thinkers site.
Just heard Joey Johns is having health problems, being a QLD supporter I was never a fan of Joey but I would like to wish him and family a speedy recovery. We need to care for all of our NRL players whoever they played for.
IMPORTANTLY to all Thinkers people, may you have a happy and safe New Years celebration and hopefully 2019 brings all you wish for.

Hi to all,
I was going through the dates on the draw for 2019 season (nrl website, printable schedule) and noticed the following:

Round 14 is from Thu 13/6 to Sun 16/6/19
Round 15 is from Thu 27/6/18 to Sun 30/6/19

WHAT HAPPENS ON Th 20/6 to Sun 23/6/19?????
Does everyone get a week off for recovery or is there a "stuff up"??
Cheers
Mary

Hi
Everyone I discovered today without even realising it for a number of weeks now I have been speaking to & made friends with this women at the shops I frequent who works at the service desk that she is the daughter of graham hughes & I also met her father, just thought I would share that with you all ...

mark ashford's picture

Mary S
The draw as you have seen it is correct as per my Courier Mail draw published recently. What's happened is that SOO 2 is being played in Perth on Sunday June 23 so I guess it's a break for all clubs involved or not.
Sticks in my craw a bit when SOO has always been between NSW & QLD. Perth doesn't have a team in the NRL. OK to take a game to Melbourne as the Storm provide players to both sides.
I watch all games on tv so can't complain too much but do feel for the diehard fans who now have to fly to Perth and pay expensive accommodation to see game 2.

mark ashford's picture

Hey Chris
The Hughes family are legends in NSW rugby league.
Glad you have made a friend with the daughter of Graham.
Bet you two have plenty of stories to swap.
Keep well my friend.

christine 's picture

Mark
You forgot the chocolate grahams daughter loves chocolate & I had been giving her Belgian chocolate without even realizing she was graham hughes's daughter so now she also has my chocolate recipe so she can now make her own rocky road which she does & she loves it , stay well my friend ...

Mary S's picture

Hi Mark,
Thanks for clearing that up - makes sense now with SoO in Perth.
No what you mean about the expense!
Cheers,
Mary

manyana's picture

Wow Christine, you make your own rocky road?
I'd love to have that recipe, or would I? It probably wouldn't help my waistline lol.
I like the Darrell Lea rocky road, but that's not good for my waistline either lol.

mark ashford's picture

Chris & Manyana,
Chocolate is an amazing thing. It gives you a sense of comfort and relaxation while you are consuming it. The darker it is the better as it has less milk solids and sugar. Chocolate coated nuts of any description are simply delicious as is rocky road but maybe a bit too much sugar.
I was given a huge Toblerone at Christmas, you know with bits of almonds and toffee in it. Will take a week or two to eat.
You two enjoy and watch those waistlines, mine has taken a big step in the wrong direction.

christine 's picture

My recipe was based on using Belgian chocolate but now is too hard to get for the quantity you would need with the price works out too much but any cooking chocolate is stronger than any confectionary chocolate so use woolworths home brand cooking chocolate milk is better than dark as the dark is over kill believe me so ingredients you need are 2 blocks of woolworths home brand cooking chocolate 375grms preferably milk dark is just overkill but it's up to you
1 block of copha
1 packet of woolworths home brand granulated nuts 200 grms
1 ;packet of sshmallows ( mini marshmellows ) ( 100 grm )
1 roll of foil
1 empty 2 ltr ice cream container for all the chocolate to be put in when made & set
step 1 line the bottom of a baking tray & the sides with foil so there are no holes
step 2 break all chocolate into individual pieces & add in summer 30 grms copha in warmer climates you may need more it's a setting agent melt in microwave safe bowl on 1000 watts for 2mins unti the chocolate has melted if not all has give another 20 but don't over do it if you burn chocolate you can't go back make sure the copha gets mixed in well with the chocolate as is a setting agent don't take to long then mix in the rest of the ingredients being the nuts & the marshmellows put all the ingredients from the bowl once all mixed through into the foil lined baking tray rectangle shape say 26 cms long 18 cms wide 40 mills deep so it's all flat & even out then once that is done put in the fridge tray & all for a day or two or freezer for a ay even quicker to set cause it's always better the next day not only to tatse but to cut as well
cut into bite size pieces and enjoy ps when you cut it into pieces to eat you end up with little shards that you keep aside in an empty container so next time you make a batch those pieces get added to the batch so there is no waste
any ??? just ask
ps mark if your game try with the dark cooking chocolate but don't blame me if it's over kill ...

christine 's picture

That meant to say it's quicker to put it in a frezzer for a day than the fridge but if not leave in the fridge an extra day to set properly ...

christine 's picture

Mark I made my rocky road recipe each week for 7 years but hardly ever touched a piece of it myself I just drink to much soft drink cause I like my sugar too much but the chocolate was always for other peoples enjoyment which is how I get my satisfaction from seeing other people getting there enjoyment as strange as that may sound but that's me ...

Mary S's picture

Hi Christine,
Your recipe sounds great and no, it doesn't sound strange at all that you get satisfaction out of seeing others enjoy what you have made.

I used to make and decorate cakes - wedding, birthday and the rest and found the same satisfaction, in not only knowing that you have excelled in a task you undertook to do, but it brings others pleasure.

Christine your recipe for rocky road sound delicious

manyana's picture

Mark, if you need any help eating that Toblerone, just give me a call LOL.
Cheers, Manyana.

manyana's picture

Hi Christine, thanks for the recipe, not game to try it just now because of the expanded waistline, but I'll copy it & try it in the not too distant future. cheers, manyana.

manyana's picture

Mark & Christine, I'm lucky in some ways, I rarely drink soft drink, don't like wine or beer, but I DO have a sweet tooth.
If I were to make that rocky road as per Christine's recipe, I doubt whether I'd share it. If I did, it would only be one small piece to my housemate, who is a diabetic. So I could very comfortably eat the rest myself over a few days.
Thanks again for the recipe Christine.
Cheers, manyana.

christine 's picture

Now in regards to my recipe if you add an extra 3 lines on top of the already 2 blocks of chocolate to say 800 grms then double the quantity of nuts & sshmallows but that's up to you if you do or not grahams daughter did she is addicted to chocolate & so you all know if you buy the ingredients from woolworths everything is in aisle 9 in different locations except the foil all woolworths stores are set out the same enjoy ...

christine 's picture

That was meant to say everthing is in aisle 9 except the copha my mistake sorry ...

christine 's picture

If you make my rocky road recipe using 800 grms chocolate then you have to use 2 packets of granulated nuts so 400 grams ,200 grms each packet & 2 packets sshmallows 200grms 100 each packet & don't taste it until all ingredients are mixed toughter & it sets properly because the once mixed & set the flavour all comes toughter & if you eat it before then you are only consuming a setting agent in your stomach so don't do that ok I promise you will love it , every one else does & that's a lot of people ...

manyana's picture

Hi Christine, thanks for the info. I'll probably try it at Easter.
Cheers, Manyana.

a's picture

Thanks Christine I will make it one day

Cameron Smith has just resinged for 2 years what do you think

Rocket Ryan's picture

Happy New Year tipsters I hope you're all ready for a big year looks like it's been a bit of a rocky road here since I've been away my predictions are a big year for the Broncos bye bye Benny welcome siebold I predict more pain and misery for the Tigers and eels for a game to have winners you have to have losers and tiger holic and baggy spring to mind as two of the more hopeless I've ever run across anyway tipsters not long to go now we're almost there.

Baggy_Gee's picture

That's OK Ryan, we can't all support a team that employed a senile old coot who tore the place up and then is taking half the roster in 2020. My fearless prediction is you jump band wagons about round 2. If only other clubs had people of your loyalty.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Cheers mate don't forget I'm a member

Baggy_Gee's picture

That's fine, sure they'll refund the wagon hoppers if you pull a Wayne and argue with them.

Mary S's picture

And the comments (bagging ones) flow!!

So good to see you back Rocket & Baggy.
Cheers
Mary

christine 's picture

Now that's what we've been missing just can't wait for the season to start It's taking too long & rocket don't knock the rocky road until you try it i'm entitled to bragging rights on this one trust me ...

Rocket Ryan's picture

The last thing I would do is knock it Christine we all love Rocky Road I got the recipe that you put up I might make tigerholic a big block if he behaves himself.

a's picture

Yes I think we all love Rocky Road

mark ashford's picture

WOW its great to see Rocket & Baggy back here so early in the year and trading shots long before a ball is kicked off.
I've had some insider info that Siebold has completely revamped the Broncs training regime and the players are very happy. If it results into more wins only time will tell.
Keep well everyone and keep the faith in your team. 2019 games are a bit off yet, but I can't wait until Thursday March 14.

christine 's picture

Rocket
To make my recipe easier for you jusrt use 2 blocks of the homebrand cooking chocolate be it milk or dark that choice is yours 2 packets of the granulated nuts & 2 packets of the sshmallows don't worry about the extra chocolate follow the rest as said don't forget the copha it's a setting agent you'll be fine with making it but don't burn it if you do you can't go back you have to throw it out so give it 2 mins in a microwave on high 1000 watt & if it needs more just 20 seconds at a time until it melts or you can mix it to make it melt ok ...

christine 's picture

Remember my recipe was originally done using Belgian chocolate but the woolworths chocolate still works fine just doesn't have that Belgian taste & if you want to use dark chocolate I suggest half & half the dark is too much for even people who like dark chocolate ...

Esra Star's picture

I will stick with the horses. Go Bronco's

mark ashford's picture

Esra Star, nice to see you here.
Yes according to Darryl Braithwaite we should all be riding on the horses yeah.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Does that make all bronco supporters "little darlings"? Or is it just "way up in the sky" the dreams of top eight and a repete of the seibold miracle. We Eels supporters will pick you up when you fall though. Ahhhh great song there Darryl.

mark ashford's picture

Nice pick up there Baggy.
With GI announcing his retirement at end of 2020 and not even sure if he will play SOO this year or next....will that end the NSW whining?

christine 's picture

Mark
GI said he will retire from rep after this year so 2020 he can just focus on souths he plans on still being around souths after that kind of an ambassador role like JT with cowboys ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

Well it is done, Saturday of magic round I'll be there, all games and we'll see how the BOYS stack up against those cheating scumbags from the pimple of the world. A few other decent games on as well, It should be an interesting thing to view, and best of all..................................... No Phil in the commentary box, Ah the relief.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Angry TG bans Napa for something that happened years ago, but GI get swept under the carpet for drink driving? Come on Todd, we know you play favorites but try to make it less obvious.

mark ashford's picture

Baggy
Interesting comment about "the cheating scumbags from the pimple of the world"
I've checked the Eels draw for Saturdays in 2019 and find you have Rd 4 Sharks at home, Rd 9 Storm away, Rd 10 Cowboys away, Rd 13 Sharks away, Rd 14 Broncos at home, Rd 15 Raiders at home, Rd 19 Warriors at home and Rd 21 Knights at home.
Of the 8 games 5 are at home...an encouragement from the NRL?
Which of these teams is the recipient of your caustic comment?

Baggy_Gee's picture

Ahh, the standard discussion about the capital of the southern most capital on main land Australia. On the NRL encouragement side, I think that they really want to stamp an NRL feel to the new stadium. Its going to be used by all 3 codes as it isn't big enough to play AFL in. So I think they are trying to be the dominant code in the country. But it think that the only easy game we have a prayer in is the Cowboys up there, possibly the Raiders at home is an easier game than the rest. Its going to be a hard start to the year.

a's picture

Yeah GI is doing a JT here

BigPeteBx's picture

Good Hot Sunday Afternoon MA and all my other friends here.
Those who are checking in.

My sincerest apologies in not being more functional and present here. My last post was 22.12 and little did I know we would receive a phone call on Christmas Eve to say my brother passed away aged 62.
Top that off and I'm still into eye surgeons. Enough of me, how are you all going. HEAPS well I hope. Its has been very hot and dry West of The Sandstone Curtain.
I was down at Qudo's last Monday night to see the first of Phil Collins' Concerts. Truly magic, as was his 17 y/o son, playing drums in his place. Looks like another gifted muso.
Phil has a crook back these days and a buggered foot, so did the concert from a chair (seated). May won't be as hot in Sydney and less travelling when we see Human Nature at ICC.

The BBL continues on and interesting that finals are nearing.
UK EPL continues and my beloved Red Devils are making waves over there under a new "interim" coach in former player of Sir Alex years, in Ole Gunnar Solksjaer. 8 wins without a loss and toppled Arsenal yesterday in FA Cup 4th Round.

Mark - I think it might be Sharks that Baggy is referring to with his "caustic comment". It will be interesting to see how Sharks go with John Morris at the helm, since the de-registration of Shane Flanagan.

The Gallen/Hopoate match up 8th Feb, in the boxing ring isn't far off.

Will also be interesting to see how The Manly Boys go with 2 or 3 registered coaches there.
Did you Mark or Manyana, head over to the butcher shop and say hello?

Christine - I likes the look of your Rocky Road recipe. Might just give it a burl come the right time in Winter. Hope you are holding ok with your conditions.

Baggy G - the new Parra Stadium is coming along, don't worry, should be good when completed. I'll be there to see a match of whatever. A-League is a mixture this season and K.Muscat loved the thought that they got over Sydney FC last night. I didn't too much, but it was away in Melb. FC kept coming at them, even though down a player or two due to Socceroos Asian Cup commitments. Our local fellow Rhyan Grant made the squad and he is an excellent player and niggler, when need be.

Mary S - I do hope it isn't too overly hot up there in Nth Qld. Rain is what many want about the place, but when you guys get rain, a Cyclone builds up.

a, Newbie, Steely, Boss (Thinker) - keep well

For now, must go my friends - keep well all of you.

Cheers - BigPete

christine 's picture

Big pete
My rocky road recipe in winter you don't need as much copha as you do in summer but if your going to make 800 grms of chocolate then still use 30grms copha in summer you would probably need 45 grms hope you enjoy ...

christine 's picture

Who on this site wants to give there tip who they think with either coach & or player changes might win this years comp before the season actually starts just going by player &or coach changes who has bought better any thoughts your included in this Thinker just want to see who's thinking out there already ...
