Round eleven selections

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Parramatta Eels - Friday night – ANZ Stadium

Let's point out the fairly obvious to begin with - Greg Inglis won't be playing for the Rabbits and Will Hopoate won't be playing for the Eels. They're preparing for a date on Wednesday night...which is kinda sweet. Less obvious is Issac Luke on the bench, and the Rabbits have a six-man bench. Is the little big man playing or not? Is his face okay after getting accidentally kicked two or three times by the Australian captain (I told you he must be cranky). Beyond those uncertainties this looks like a really compelling game - two massive packs of forwards and some speed out wide. I'm giving the Eels another chance after they almost got there last weekend. The Bunnies are clear favourites and all things being equal they win...but this game reeks of an upset. Back the Eels with the handicap start.

Verdict – Eels by 4

Result - Rabbitohs 14 defeated Eels 12

Wests Tigers vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Campbelltown Stadium

Farah and Woods step down for the Tigers - Thurston, Scott, Tamou and possibly Morgan step down for the Cowboys. That's a lot of talent to pull out a contest. If Morgan is free to play I actually lean to the Cowboys - it's no fluke that the Cowboys winning run has coincided with his move into the halves. He's been named, and the Cowboys haven't named an extended bench...so i'm playing the cards as I see them. The Tigers are frightfully short favourites, but winning (and losing) are contagious. The Tigers have just one win in the last six weeks and the Cowboys just keep on singing the team song. I need the Cowboys forwards that are available to give their all but I'm hoping the youngsters galvanise on the road trip and pull off a victory to remember. I'll be backing Granville to score the first and/or last try of the night...at big odds.

NOTE: Michael Morgan has replaced Cherry-Evans in the Queensland camp. My tip stands as is...but my argument does not.

Verdict – Cowboys by 1

Result - Cowboys 8 defeated Tigers 0

Canberra Raiders vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Sunday afternoon – GIO Stadium

Not many sides are unaffected by State of Origin but that is certainly the case for the Raiders. They'll relish the return home and Sunday afternoon football often brings out their best. The Bulldogs are without Hodkinson, Klemmer, Morris and Jackson...and they weren't travelling well to begin with. Just one win since Round Four and that was against the team running last. The Raiders have a nasty habit of losing when people expect them to win, but I'm happy to back them at $1.65 or thereabouts. They just look too good...and I can't believe I'm saying that this season.

Verdict – Raiders by 12

Result - Bulldogs 41 defeated Raiders 34

Newcastle Knights vs Brisbane Broncos – Monday night – Hunter Stadium

Remember David Stagg? I bump into him at the local shops from time to time, but I didn't even know he was still on contract. He's lacing on the boots on Monday night, along with a handful of the 'Baby Broncos' as Parker, Boyd, Hodges, Gillett, Thaiday and McGuire step up to State grade. Six Broncos all playing for Queensland on Wednesday night - it's just like the glory days. Fortunately, Wayne Bennett was the coach back then so he has his fair share of experience at getting the kids to step up at this time of year. The other important thing to note is that most of the Broncos spine remains intact. This looks hard though. The Knights are at home and are coming off a win, and that Knights pack just looks too strong for what's left of the Broncos engine room. The Broncos won't relent easily...it's not their way, but I can't see them doing enough to win. A Knights victory by 1-12 looks likely.

Verdict – Knights by 8

Result - Broncos 31 defeated Knights 18

Only 15 Friday's to go Thinker :p

newbie from perth's picture

Hi everyone,

What a game that was! Newbie and Shanghai doing a texting frenzy back and forth with this one. Wasn’t that impressed with the Bunnies tonight and without trying to upset anyone, I reckon the best side on the night lost!

Phew, them Bunnies somehow managed to conjure up that win but did it hard and left it late. As Shanghai said to me in one of his texts … “Lazarus lives!” Tonight is what makes the Great Game so great! Awesome!

christine 's picture

it was an ugly win for souths but a wins a win

Johnny Ray's picture

Awesome. Wow. I'm so sorry Thinker. I really thought that you had it there mate ! That and bringing it back to burritos I just found out that one of my all time comedy heroes David Letterman has officially retired from his show this week ! Anybody wants to know who guy is and why he is such genius needs to check this out : https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=B9HWijdrYfo LOLS ! ;-D

Coach Potato's picture

He was tagged with star status when he arrived, but looking back now, I say there were some big names that made Keary look good last couple of years. Watching him having to run the show last night told me he shouldn't have worn those tags. If I was a recruitment scout my opinion is he might well be unwanted by other clubs and headed for the UK when his contract ends in 2016.

a's picture

Souths nearly lost again last night

The Thinker's picture

Groan....when Chris Sandow spilled the pill with 5 or 6 to go I just knew that:

a) the Bunnies would score during the next set and;
b) the Bunnies would score under the posts

Looked like Chris Sandow knew it too.

Eels last two weeks.....argh! Get them a goal-kicker....stat!

a's picture

Hopefully same the happens to NSW on Wednesday night they miss every single goal

Coach Potato's picture

Who's call was to give Sandow the kicks over Robinson? Granted Sandow is not a bad kicker, but he doesn't have a big boot, and that makes it difficult when its wet. I would be horrified if it was left up to the players to decide who kicks last night. Actually, it's Parra, no I'm not that surprised.

a's picture

I hope QLD win on Wednesday

Coach Potato's picture

Qld should win, but if the NRL season is any guide you would be stacking it on the roughie, so GO BLUE SOUTH WALES !!! >:-/

a's picture

NSW only won last year cause of the refs

Baggy_Gee's picture

OK...... That was a lucky try and with what happened to Danny Wicks a bit later with that charge down proves what I've been saying. Danny bobbles the ball ever so slightly in the field of play after taking every precaution not to, Knock on. Danny does that in the end zone (work is getting to me and can't think of the NRL term) try as there was downwards pressure. We need to get consistancy worked out across the field, the end zone ( still failling me) is the playing field and vice versa. So are they willing to forgive the loose carry of the ball as it is picked up from the play the ball? He still had a finger nail on it. Thinker your right the moment I watched the 3 sets of 6 on Parra's line my heart sank.

Johnny Ray's picture

Whoa ! That's huge ! Cowboys beat Tigers in Sydney for first time since 2004. God damn ! Good call Thinker ! Not even our mate a could of picked that result ! That's real upset ! :-(

a's picture

Yes but I am happy to get it wrong

Coach Potato's picture

Cowboys streak of 8 and counting. Tigers just pathetic.

a's picture

Yes Tiigers are just pathetic they will need to start winning soon

Steel Panther's picture

After last night it's hard to see where the next win will come for the Tigers. Just about every set ended up with the same result. Bomb safely taken by Lachlan Coote who didn't miss a trick all night. Well done to the Cowboys!!

a's picture

Not for a while

christine 's picture

a yeah it's good cowboys won but the bookies have done it again tigers had a minus 4 line & yet cowboys win , odds are supposed to be a guide of weight of money bookies are just rakeing it in

a's picture

Cowboys are on top now

a's picture

How's that the Tigers vs Cowboys game had 8 points and the Raiders vs Bulldogs games had 75 points there is 2 very different games

Coach Potato's picture

Only Tailspin has 2 out of 3. Everyone else only has 1 out of 3.

Coach Potato's picture

Sorry JR. Hoping to join you and Tailspin on 2 tomorrow when Broncos take down the Knights.

a's picture

Well I did tip Knights but I want Broncos to win

Coach Potato's picture

Everyone's tipped Newcastle, so how clear can that be - Broncos in a canter

Johnny Ray's picture

Ah don't apologise coach ! It's all good mate ! That and I agree with you and a that Knights game isn't that much of certainty ! Dude not anymore ! You know Raiders did manage to come from behind and beat Bulldogs today that would be biggest come from behind win for anybody in history of our game ! Goes to show you that anything can happen now ... :-s

Coach Potato's picture

Not exactly JR. Would have equalled it. I was at Penrith Park back in '98 watching Penrith up 26-0 at halftime. The game finished in a blurr Cowboys 36 - Penrith 28. Standing ovation at halftime, boo-ing our own team off at full-time. Crazy but true.

As far as time left on the clock, this one is still the biggest. Although down by the same margin, today the Raiders were only 10 down at half time.

I was also at the same ground in 2000 when Tigers were running away 31 - 8. So 23 points in front with only 23 minutes to go. Panthers came home like Phar Lap, winning 32-31 in the dying minutes.

Panthers: biggest chase, biggest meltdown.

a's picture

How about when Cowboys were leading 28-4.aganist the Rabbitihs and lost 29-28

Coach Potato's picture

Amazingly, UK Super League's biggest comeback is also from 26 - 0 !! Hull were leading but eventually lost to Wigan 42 - 36. Score at halftime was 26 - 12, so Cowboys against Penrith still the biggest comeback on planet Earth.

a's picture

It good that Cowboys have the record

The Thinker's picture

Coach,
I remember that game well. I'd had a friendly wager with a mate on that game. He paid me at half time...lucky I didn't spend it.

From memory that was a Friday night game...so my curse has been around a while.

For those waiting on an Origin preview, I'll have something out late today.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I don't see how the weight can be against the Broncos. With Cory, Justin and that other guy winding down the team running out tonight is basically next gen Broncos. I think that they should spank the other ponies. Bring on the whips

The Thinker's picture

Baggy

I think the Broncos backline is far better than the Knights, but the Broncos are without their four best forwards and a centre (Hodges) who is always good for some metres gained out of dummy half.

If the Knights don't win tonight they need to install some mirrors in their shed.

Coach Potato's picture

Yep. Friday night it was. Back in the days of sleepovers for travelling teams, and I remember Rowdy and Nadruku were good enough to help drown sorrows with the locals over at Panthers. If you read their wiki stories, you might not be surprised that's who were out on the town that night!

a's picture

1 out of 4 this weekend for me

Johnny Ray's picture

Yeah they're going need to install some mirrors on their ceilings too Thinker if they plan to keep f$&@ing themselves over like that in a game ! Knights ! Godamn ! :-(

a's picture

God damn alright alough I did want Broncos to win

The Thinker's picture

Possibly the most bizarre round of rugby league I have ever seen....and I've seen some funny things over the years.

The Knights tonight......wow!

The updated tipping comp results should start filtering through your interwebs in the next hour or so. From memory, 2 from 4 was our best result this round.

Coach Potato's picture

Safety used to be the hallmark of a winning footy tipper. For the first eleven rounds, I would say safety has been the hallmark of a losing footy tipper.

Steel Panther's picture

Can't agree with you more there Coach. Newcastle simply woeful last night and like the Tigers have a long season ahead. Two poor one on one efforts by Uate led to Bronco tries while Gagai's effort on Oates was simply embarrassing. I think Bennett has a good record during Origin when coaching Brisbane and that was on show again last night although it was hardly a "baby" team with most of the 17 having a good dose of NRL experience. Back to the drawing board.....

a's picture

Yes Knights and Tigers are woeful at the moment
