Round five selections

Canterbury Bulldogs vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

This game can sneak up on you a little bit. You descend into that semi-comatose state on Good Friday and before you know it you've missed the kick-off. Try not to miss it this year, because this could be quite a game of football. I can't imagine the Bunnies will lose two in a row very often this season, and the Bulldogs will be primed to test themselves against the NRL benchmark. I happily backed the Eels to beat the handicapper last weekend but I didn't expect them to beat the Bunnies as well. They may have shared the blueprint for Bunny-beating in the process. The Rabbits system holds together seamlessly against structured attacks but the Eels ad-hoc approach found a way through. It brought a smile to my face and I'm hoping it gave some NRL coaches something to ponder. I'm sure Des Hasler will watch the tape but I'm not convinced the Bulldogs are the right team to replicate the Eels approach. A bumper game and (hopefully) a bumper crowd, and a tremendous way to start four days of stupidly good sport.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 2

Result - Rabbitohs 18 defeated Bulldogs 17

Gold Coast Titans vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – CBus Super Stadium

The Titans picked up their first victory last week when the Sharks handed them an opportunity and then held the door open for them while they took it. A win is a win but I can't imagine the Broncos will be so generous. Hodges, Blair and Ofahengaue are out for the Broncos, and with those changes they look light on for size in the forwards and light on for experience in the backs. The Titans halfback and dummy-half lack big-game experience but they have quite a few wise old heads around them. At $2.50 or thereabouts the Titans look backable to me and I'm expecting a big game from Josh Hoffman against his old club.  James Roberts is a likely try-scorer in what looks like a low-scoring affair.

Verdict – Titans by 2

Result - Broncos 26 defeated Titans 16

Manly Sea Eagles vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday afternoon – Brookvale Beach

I really wanted to tip the Raiders this weekend but I need to start thinking about my health. The Sea Eagles are missing some key big men (and they need every big man they can get), and without Jamie Lyon they lose some all-important composure and experience. Matt Ballin and Jamie Buhrer will need to do a ton of work in the middle to help their props, but hard work has never been a problem for them previously. The venue seals it for me - I assume the Raiders don't have a lot of experience in the sand. This could end up being a surprisingly good (and close) game. Watch for the Raiders to stuff things up in the last ten minutes as Ricky Stuart grimaces his way to full-time.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 2

Result - Raiders 29 defeated Sea Eagles 16

Newcastle Knights vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday night – Hunter Stadium

These sides will be competing for the inaugural Alex McKinnon Cup which is a fantastic initiative. The Knights played poorly in the Alex McKinnon round last season so it will be interesting to see how they respond this time around. So far in 2015 they just keep jumping the hurdles in front of them, and with James McManus and Tariq Sims returning to a team going well they simply look too good. That said I'm tipping a tight, low-scoring game. The Dragons might by 11th on the ladder but only the Roosters have conceded less points than the Red V (and the Knights have conceded just two more than the Dragons). Back the unders...confidently.

Verdict – Knights by 4

Result - Dragons 13 defeated Knights 0

Sydney Roosters vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

The Sharks are going through playmakers like Spinal Tap go through drummers. Owen Four gets his chance this weekend, only to be replaced by Owen Five at the conclusion of this game. And looking at the draw for the Sharks in the weeks ahead Owen Eight has some chance of making an appearance. Even Paul Gallen must be struggling to find someone else to blame for these disappointing performances. The Roosters should give them a good guide as to just how poorly they are travelling on Sunday afternoon. Roosters 40ish - Sharks 6 or less. Bloodbath.

Verdict – Roosters by 38

Result - Sharks 20 defeated Roosters 12

Parramatta Eels vs Wests Tigers – Monday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

It's a big call but this could be the most entertaining game of the round. The Eels did what few thought possible by beating the Bunnies and beating them convincingly, while the Tigers went down by the narrowest of margins to the Bulldogs. The Tigers will be better again this weekend, as they welcome back Aaron Woods, Dene Halatau and Pat Richards to the fold. I'm taking a punt on the Tigers - Woods has been tremendous this season and his return gives them a slight edge up front. Hopefully Farah and Brooks can capitalise on that and big Pat Richards can slot a field goal from just about anywhere to get them over the line.

Verdict – Tigers by 1

Result - Tigers 22 defeated Eels 6

Melbourne Storm vs New Zealand Warriors – Monday twilight – AAMI Park

The Melbourne Storm rarely let a winning lead get away from them, but they did just that last Monday night. If Craig Bellamy has his way we won't be seeing such a thing again this season, and we rarely see the Storm back up from a loss with another loss - particularly when that follow-up game is played at home. As the AFL kicks off in the southern capital the purple machine will want to remind the locals they are a team worth sticking with. I expect them to bounce off that loss and give us close to their best. Unless absolutely everything clicks for the Warriors they can't match that.

Verdict – Storm by 10

Result - Storm 30 defeated Warriors 14

Penrith Panthers vs North Queensland Cowboys – Monday night – Pepper Stadium

I don't need to talk about Jonathan Thurston - you all saw what he did and you all know how I feel about the guy...it's just a shame I tipped the Storm. I also tipped the Panthers who delivered a truly baffling performance last weekend. They found their feet a little in the second half but by then the game was well and truly over. It's been pointed out that the Panthers performances backing up from Monday night have been woeful (0 from 10), so it might be worth remembering that for the next round. James Segeyaro found a good surgeon who put his face back together in time for Monday night - I am sure his absence last week contributed to the Panthers poor performance. I expect him to go well against his old club, and every time I see him play I wonder why the Cowboys let him go. I bet Phil Gould and Ivan Cleary were high-fiving each other in the car park that day. Barring another extraordinary performance from JT you'd have to think the Panthers will prevail at home.

Verdict – Panthers by 4

Result - Cowboys 30 defeated Panthers 10

Cowboys are back baby

Coach Potato's picture

Yes Cowboys well done. Two good wins and you've made it back up to ... 13th. Still bottom 4. Ouch!

christine 's picture

coach you can not change the result so I would appreciate it if you just let it go .

Anonymous, remember the NRL can, has, does, and will use their power in whatever shape or form suits them. Problem is, its the refereeing that needs fixing. Other problem is the refs association us 100% backed by the NRL. The crowd behaviour is purely symptomatic of either constantly very poor, or else corrupt officiating. Its definitely one of the two but until the refs come under the same microscope as one of the Wolfman's $5 bills, then we will never know for sure. The real cause of it all was all on Friday was the Morris push in the back that everyone saw, but not 3 on field officials (one of these standing no more thgan 10feet away) and 2 in the box that had trouble seeing it in slow-mo, and I would think if such an abomination had happened to "any" of the 16 NRL teams, including South Sydney, the refs would have copped a tirade afterwards. Hard to say whether 16 fansets would have replicated the Dogsofwar, but they would have certainly felt like it.

ok coach you got what you wanted a i'm not doing this anymore this crap is making me even more sick , it's nothing but abuse just so people have your opinion & stress that only makes my ms even worse so thanks coach for being a jerk & not letting it go when you can't do anything about it you really are a bulldogs supporter , thinker your welcome to it & a I have done all I can to help you I won't be any more.

Coach Potato's picture

Chris, the Bulldogs game is a very hot topic if you hadn't noticed. I dont require your patronising. I know thge result stands, but people talking is always a good thing I would have thought. If you would like a muzzle on myself and anyone else that has a right to their own opinion, then ask Thinker to discard the Comment* option from the page, or failing that, deal with it.

christine 's picture

I just did deal with it & you don't have any idea what having ms is like it only your opinion that counts is it the thinker & the thinkers little helper know when I need a break from my ms getting me down & depressed that coming to this website is like my home away from home it's my escape but now you have ruined that for me coach because you can't stop so it's all yours now coach I'll leave you to argue with yourself .

Baggy_Gee's picture

Well lets change games shall we people, Friday was a dog (pun intended) of a game. Graham and Klemma getting time on the sideline for abuse of the ref, good call. Graham getting time out for an accident absolute crap (trademark pending). But the tigers taking their time for a line drop out so that the ref could watch a replay on the big screen and change his call, rubbish. It was the correct call but when the touch judge and the onfield ref call line drop out how the hell can the video over rule the call, and if they can over rule in that situation why the hell haven't they used that before to pick up some really bum calls in the last five weeks?

a's picture

We can not really change the result

a's picture

While I remember when are you going to update the ladder thinker

The Thinker's picture

There are going to be contentious calls each and every week - it's all part of the game that we love (even if it's often the part of the game that frustrates us most of all).

We are all free to discuss such things, and providing we don't resort to personal abuse or threats, we will keep on discussing such things.

And remember, without differing opinions tipping competitions would suck.....a lot.

So at this special time of year, let's not forget that the Easter Bunny died in Kings Cross, only to be resurrected so we could eat chocolate, watch sport for four days and spend countless hours in traffic trying to get home on Easter Monday. Peace and goodwill to you all.

I'll have the ladder and tipping comp updated later today.
All the best

The Thinker's picture

In a round where 4 out of 8 was a good result, miniature golf claps for Scott M with 6 from 8 (including the Sharks) and The Joker who fell in a hole early but clambered out and ended up with 5 from 8.

Bravo!

Morning all
Interesting weekend...to say the least.
I'm on 3/8 so no bragging from me!
There seems to be a culture of violence at the Bulldogs which spills over to the fans. The police/club will deal with the fans it's James Graham that interests me most.
The refs correctly gave the penalty in front. Coach says the refs should know the rules but surely so should the players and the footy media.
Grahams temper tantrum fired up Klemmer and the crowd and it seems the judiciary.
I don't know about you but I'm sick to death of seeing kickers taken out late. These are usually our smallest players and are unable to defend them selves at the time.
James Graham used his head (not in the way he should)in last years grand final and escaped sanction. This time he won't be so lucky.
Sorry "Coach" but refs have made errors since game 1 and will be making them until everybody's boots have been hung up.
I blame channel 9 for most of the fans dissent not the refs with constant replays in slo-mo and poor opinionated commentators.
Shock of the round for me was Roosters/Sharks.
Well done Sharkies but I thought Roosters really missed JWH go forward and took many poor options.
Christine and Joker, you have been great contributors to this site over the years and I for one would be very sorry to see you go.
As The Thinker said we are all welcome to post our thoughts just don't make it personal or take it personally.
Now roll on round 6

Morning Tipsters
Well another shocker for tipping, well done to those in the top half of the table. Surely next week will be brighter.

I tore a ligament in my left shoulder whilst coaching my kids U13/14
soccer team last Tuesday night, the only good thing to come out of that was a few weeks off work and I was able to watch all 8 games of footy.

Have a great week, watch out for a comeback from Tigerholic.

Yeah please do not leave Christine or Joker it is just a game after all

Coach Potato's picture

Joker bolts past me the after a 2/8 week. Calling for a Florida Recount ! :p

The Thinker's picture

4 from 8 for you Coach - not too shabby at all.

No Florida recount needed...the only Chad I count on plays five-eighth for the Warriors.

Coach Potato's picture

You are right Mark and I took my ode last week to "raise my right hand and solemnly swear to give some, cop some, but never take anything personally. So help me Gus."

On the contrary, Im hearing people describe players as grubs and that's ... ummm ...kind of a low call don',t you think? A little personal?

I'm happy Mark to concede I am mistaken about the penalty in front if you can show me the rule. Whether its been ruled similarly in the past does not make it a rule. I'm keen to see what you produce.

christine 's picture

last night lara pitt said adam Reynolds will only miss 3 - 4 weeks now .

mark ashford's picture

Sorry Coach but I don't know this rule or in fact very many NRL rules at all. In this case I'm relying on Bill Harrigan, Graeme Annerslie, Sterlo and just about any other NRL "expert" who has bothered to comment including George Pepponis.
I didn't refer to James graham as a "grub" but that seems to be the term adopted by many to describe his behavior ( just ask Billy Slaters ear)
Mate I'm pleased to see you're a passionate Dogs supporter just as I'm a passionate follower of the Broncs.
Don't ever lose that Coach it would be a sad world without passionate fans.

Coach Potato's picture

You misinterpret my attempt at unbiased views with mixibg me up as a fan - or maybe i'll take it as a compliment that thats been confused. I've never been a fan of the dogs, I'm a panther thru and thru. Our only two prelim losses both to he dogs, not easy. I deplored Grahams biting act. I didn't agree with the Vaseline trick, yet I love his toughness and passion for the game. I am with society in regard to Bulldogs players off field behaviour over the years. Although no team can declare sainthood on and off the field least of all the dogs opponents last week. Last off season was only 6 weeks ago. Time flies.

I think my point is valid about the poor rules knowledge of the entire rugby league community, players, ex players, media, and sad to say, referees included. A quick hands-up survey of all the self-proclaimed experts of the game to ask "Have you read the document?" You then rely on them to base your own views - more fool you.

Coach Potato's picture

That's not a put down understand Mark. I really urge everyone to familiarise themselves. Its very important. The game has evolved so much with so many 'rule changes' yet it hasn't reflected in the 2015 document. Its purely in officials memory bank including interpretation. Every call that gets made in an NFL game refers to a specific readable rule the game. Why shouldn't NRL be equally open about why the whistle gets blown?

Coach Potato's picture

...and lastly stat wise congrats to the top4 Souths, Brisbane, Newcastle, and Sydney. 90% chance of seeing you in September. As for Nth Qld, Cronulla, Gold Coast, and Manly. Stats say it will be tough, and although Manly has done it twice in recent years I don't think the 2015 team is as good. Cowboys and Sharks could prove me wrong. Will see.

a's picture

Well the Cowboys are on form at the monent

Anonymous's picture

Funny how GUS picked Sharks to win on TV, saying "every year after round 5 EVERY TEAM has won and lost a game". Knights lost Sharks won.

mark ashford's picture

Sorry again Coach I mistook your support of Graham as coming from a doggies fan and yet you're a Panther.
The NRL have put themselves under great pressure to "clean up the game" from the media and other interested groups (medical, insurance etc). This has resulted in some new rules which many find confusing and what about the refs applying rules as they "see them"
Why don't we just let the refs ref and get back to enjoying this great game.
I've read heaps of posts following this weeks games and all they talk about is the dogs incident and how bad all the referring was.
Not one word about how good the Sharks were or the Broncos or anyone else.
Is this what we have evolved to in NRL?
Referee bashing is just poor form...don't you think?

a's picture

Are you still here Christine

christine 's picture

a i'm never far away you should know that by now .

Andrew's picture

Hi Everyone
After watching all 8 games over Easter It was reinforced to me just how inconsistent the refereeing is from one game to the next.

Last week I saw different interpretations for knock on's where the attacking teams were making a move towards the wing when one of the centres touches the ball but it goes onto the player outside him and goes on with the team scoring only to be ruled a knock on. In the same weekend this went the other way and the try was awarded.

I have been seeing it for a few years now just how the refs are getting big calls wrong, costing sides points and results. Of course the refs have a big job to do, they have to know the rules, be fit and have great communication skills to be a successful referee.

The inconsistency was seen again last night in the Panthers match, the on filed ref said try, the two video refs looked at about 30 replays indicating that they had doubt and clearly were unsure, the decision then has to go with the on field refs initial call of try.

Can someone please tell me how these decisions are not being made correctly. I love this game that well follow, I have followed the Tigers since I was a kid and I will always will, the game has to retain players and fans to be successful, the refereeing is letting us all down and spoiling games every weekend.
