History is a handy guide to everything, so I thought I'd go back and take a look at what I was thinkering in 2014. Back then, I posed the following question:

Which players in the NSW squad are good enough to be in the QLD squad?

I found Maroon jerseys for three of them - Jarryd Hayne, Paul Gallen and Brett Morris. Not one of them is lining up here. Much has been said of the age in the Queensland side, and with good reason, but providing they are all fit and in form I see this as a strength rather than a weakness. I have to assume the Queenslanders are fit, but when it comes to form I'll say this. Only one player in the QLD seventeen is with a club side outside the top eight. Thirteen of the seventeen are with clubs in the top four. More than half the NSW seventeen are in sides outside the top eight - more than half. Only three of them are with top four sides. Some might ask if these Queenslanders still have the hunger, and if they didn't lose the 2014 series I would ask the same question. They want this...and they're a better side than their opponent. In 2014 the Blues scored four tries in the entire series - that is one try for every hour of football played. Two of their more dynamic attacking weapons from last year (Hayne and Morris) are unavailable to them. Where will they score their points? Who do they turn to? I know that the first game of the series is usually a low-scoring affair but you still have to score something. I can't see enough points in them. I simply can't. It's highly likely this will be a dog fight. The officials are reluctant to blow their whistles and that will slow the game down considerably. That keeps this close, but I'll bank on the talent in that QLD backline. They've been doing this for a while, and they are successful more often than not. That so many of them work together at club level is another enormous bonus. Morgan comes in for Cherry-Evans, and his combination with Thurston is first-class. Will Chambers replaces Tate, and he knows the games of Smith, Cronk and Slater like the back of his hand. McGuire gets a well-earned debut off the bench, and three of his mates from the Broncos engine room are there alongside him. I'm happy to take $1.75 or thereabouts about a QLD victory, and I'm keen on Thaiday as first try-scorer at nice odds too. Gamble responsibly.

Verdict : QLD 18 - NSW 10 (Result: QLD 11 def NSW 10)

First try scorer: Sam Thaiday (Result: Cooper Cronk)

Man of the Match: Matt Scott (Result: Cameron Smith)

As much as I dislike Morris, his try was nice to watch. Lucky bounce but ya gotta take 'em when ya can. Lead up and play that created it was beautiful.

Maroons are still in it hopefully so fingers crossed.

Being West Aussie, don't have the same "passion" as some (g'day Coach!) but still get excited at the fumbles and dropped ball and so on.

Newbie's gotta go off and get himself a short black and park his you-know-what on the couch and get ready for the next 40.

May the best team win. Awesome!

It's been tough. It's been close. We have a contest. Other than the Shannon Noll car accident it's everything I hoped it would be.

Tamou and Woods....outstanding. I don't think Merrin has had a run yet. Eep!

Awesome didn't know that about jerseys Coach ! But brown does makes sense to me since Sharks were almost called Lions. Thanks Thinker. I realise what the colours on Titans jersey represent it still doesn't change my opinion that QLD team playing in NSW colours still looks ridiculous stupid to me ! Still that's nothing. Don't get me started with Bear on Central Coast Team Logo. Come on Blues ! Let's go ! Give it to them Kiwi style ! Kia Kaha ! ;-D

Stop swearing every time you miss Pottty Mouth

The Thinker's picture

My 18-10 scoreline prediction looking pretty unlikely with the Thurston miss.

Coach Potato's picture

Where's our ruck penalties ?

The Thinker's picture

If JT kicks this they win

Coach Potato's picture

Phew! Ya gotta love this Great Game eh?

Coach Potato's picture

One 10 metre penalty enough to give field position for 30 minutes. It was at least a contest before the whistle got in the way.

One thing that's showed itself up on this page is the weakness of a Maroon fan behind on the scoreboard. Nice to show yourselves up.

Steel Panther's picture

No doubt the best team won tonight. NSW forgot the game has a second half....6 and 7 poor for the Blues...

The Thinker's picture

Another nail-biter...and another Origin game where I watch the entire 80 minutes on my feet. I just love it.

Both sides should improve off the back of that. NSW with some pretty deplorable options at times.

Coach Potato's picture

No doubt hey? We missed our field goal and they got theres. An extra dozen sets and still cant score anything but the one. If it had of been the other way, they would have lavished praise on NSWs defensive effort and so deserved winners. God you here some crap

a's picture

QLD won yyyyyyaaahhhhh

Coach Potato's picture

Get Wallace and Soward in there. Players with a bit of class. Why stop there. Get Mansour on. Get Moylan in there. Get some metal into the forwards. Get Nigel Plum and Adam Docker on. C'mon Penrith. We'll take on QLD by ourselves.

The Thinker's picture

The lack of tries from QLD in the second half is at least in part because this is Game One. Game One is always low-scoring - both defenses give and give and they're just tough to crack.

If that was Game Three they probably score 3 or 4 times in the second half.

Coach Potato's picture

Surely you'd have a few of these in the QLD team Thinker?

Coach Potato's picture

What bullshit is it to say because one player was in contact at one stage but then drops off, still equals two in the tackle. What bullshit is that?

The Thinker's picture

I'd trade Nate Myles for Aaron Woods. Woods has age on his side...and he looks like a giant stuffed bear which is a big bonus from a promotional point of view. Maybe Cordner or Merrin for Gillett...maybe.

I wouldn't trade any of the others....honestly.

Coach Potato's picture

I know what the loud and clear chant would be around Lang Park if they'd given a penalty against QLD for a clean one on one strip.

Coach Potato's picture

I meant of the ones they refuse to give a go, Soward Moylan Mansour.

Coach Potato's picture

To give a dinosaur 10 mtre penalty one way but not the other. That told me everything

Coach Potato's picture

Bloody nasal spray. Still firing. Hey FC you wake?

The Thinker's picture

I like Moylan and Mansour a lot. Both should get their chance at this level.

Soward is probably the best option the Blues have...but I can't seen them going there again.

Austin is on an upward spiral...but you don't want to chew him up and spit him out before he's ready.

Coach Potato's picture

Surely the best kicking game in the NRL should count for something

Coach Potato's picture

How bout Segeyaro? He's from PNG which apparently showed on the map as closer to QLD so allowed Lam to play. How about James Graham, my map shows England also closer to QLD.

Coach Potato's picture

Segeyaro actually has eligibility for QLD and as much as people think its blasphemy to speak ill of Smith, I don't see him as an 80 minute player these days.

a's picture

Well QLD did have a good team

The Thinker's picture

I believe Segeyaro has put his hand on his heart and chanted Queenslander....so he's one of ours, but Jake Friend would be in front of him I suspect.

Smith is more of an 80 minute player than Farah, but time ticks on for all of us.

Coach Potato's picture

Farah is a 10 minute player at best.

NSWRL its time you saved yourself a packet. Time to make it only 50% player payments for a loss.

NRL teams might have similar performance based contracts with players. Would enable clubs to reap substantial savings each financial year. Who knows. Players might try harder. You might stop those wingers getting lost 15m in from the sideline.

Steel Panther's picture

Looking forward to Origin 2. Queensland v Penrith should be a cracker.

it is in 3 weeks time

christine 's picture

in my opinion the right team won

Sorry Coach, as I'm in hospitality (Pizza Capers, the best a pizza can get) I only got home for the kick off, and it took me till 930 to walk in the door. How can the "Biggest game in RL" kick off 20 minutes after the start time and also be allowed to have a 20 minute half time? As one guy at work pointed out that the NRL boss would have a hard time shipping beer to Suncorp on time. (Both are on Milton rd about 500m apart if you didn't know).

But on the team, there are plenty of hungry hungry (hippos) young players on each side who are willing to rip in and prove that they are just as good if not better than the incumbents. Watching the Blues forwards get the job done was really good , now to find some fire and kick on for the second game. What's Loz's email address, I have a few ideas.

Where are you Thinker - I need my tips!

The Thinker's picture

Morning Lesley

My tips are awful....why would you want mine?

In any case, I'm working on them now. Hopefully around midday today.
