Olympics Gold Medal tally-a-thon

Here we go folks - the Olympics (and our little competition) gets its own page. Feel free to add comments, and there's still a few spots up for grabs if you want to join in. You can't pick a total someone else has already taken.

Assuming someone picks the correct total they score a $50 NRL shop voucher, courtesy of our competition sponsors (Mark Ashford and The Thinker). Thank you Mark...tremendously generous of you).

Ahh and now to put the damned Kangaroo out for the night, settle back and watch some aussie gold in the women's relay, + maybe men's 400m freestyle.

fortresseagle's picture

That pom that predicted we will only get 2?gold medals fair dinkum buddy you must be on the turps we have 2 already.

We will thrash Great Britain in the medals not bad for a country half the size or more in population.

Go the Aussies !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coach Potato's picture

Combined medal tally of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland - ie. Great Britain.

So far, no so bloody Great.
Zero..

Coach Potato's picture

Sure $3.25 about Mack Horton was a nice price for fastest swimmer this year, and who couldn't blow a birthday candle after the semi, cheekily grinning, he had plenty left in the tank.

Huge value I see is on the last day of the Games in the form of Evelyn Patterson, high jumper. $16.

No Russians in the contest. Commonwealth champ, and boy she can fly. I'm on.

a's picture

You having to spend $20 is bullshit you should be able to watch it for free

Coach Potato's picture

That's per event you watch , a.
Better to stick with the TV.

Coach Potato's picture

Keiren Perkins 400m Bronze and 1500m Gold at 92 Games.
Grant Hackett 400m Silver and 1500m Gold at 2000 Games.
Mack Horton 400m Gold and 1500m ??? at 2016 Games.

The TAB says he is $5 to take the unthinkable double.
Hardly unthinkable odds is it?

Coach Potato's picture

What a disgrace that if you missed these events live, you simply cannot see it again on the internet unless you sign up to this profiteering motivated app.

Either that or watching TV and happen to see it replayed amongst their day long coverage. Bloody bullshit.

GaryChesterUK's picture

Good start Aussies. Time to shut up shop now and stay on 2 golds for the next couple of weeks! I did say your golds would come in the pool, unless you can entice Cathy Freeman out of retirement!

Team GB just warming up, going to have a medal explosion tonight!

a's picture

Come on Aussies we need 18 more medals

Coach Potato's picture

Australia proved they could be more successful at the Olympics 4 years after they were the host.

Will GB likewise be more successful than they were in London? To do so, they would need to win 30.

Steel Panther's picture

Does it mean a week off for the ref if he accidentally touches a player?

Steel Panther's picture

Whoops posted my last comment on the wrong page but I figured that's ok since the Footy page is clogged up with so much non-footy comments these days.....

Coach Potato's picture

Catherine Skinned, womens trap shooting. Gold Medal #3

See ya later Gary.

Coach Potato's picture

Catherine Skinner . Sorry Catherine. This bloody spell corrector.

Gary is the one that got skinned.

Coach Potato's picture

I had a good run :)

Coach Potato's picture

You mean up the street and back?

a's picture

Come on Aussie you need to win 17 more medals

mark ashford's picture

Aussies off to a good start. Plenty more to come methinks.

mark ashford's picture

Thinker send me those banking details before I spend all my spare on grog.
Do you need my email?

Interesting to measure yardsticks between Perkins, Hackett, and Horton. Both Perkins and Hackett placed in the 400m final before winning at 1500m. Iwonder if it's the McKinnon Stakes that Bart always said was better to run in than not.

Anyway, times show that Perkins would have been about 4 body lengths behind Thorpedoes wet-suited world record. Hackett finished the equivalent of about 2 body lengths behind Thorpe.

Horton would have finished inside a body length. They chose not to give uds the world record line during the race, but it wasn't far in front.

Does that mean Horton takes the 1500m?
Not necessarily.
It does mean he has a red hot show though.

Jessica Fox. Multi talented Kayaker from Panther territory. Bring it home, J-Fox!!

Coach Potato's picture

Sport aside, I think the protesters of the Olympics make a very strong point. In a country where there is so much poverty , it does seem wrong to spend squillions on stadiums that will probably go to rack and ruin in years to come.

Doing a quick math on current ticket prices, most are what most Aussies would call pretty cheap. So many events I see though, are poorly attended. Lots of empty seats. It still costs too much for most locals.

Although on a smaller budget than previous games, it's still a huge amount of money for Brazil. The people may dance on in the streets, but the fear is the mega sinkhole that could open up and swallow the economy of this country.

fortresseagle's picture

gold to the aussies we beat the kiwis our 4th gold medal well done to the girls on a great victory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i need 13 more gold long way to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Thinker's picture

So far the girls have about 17 gold medals for the Aussies.

The boys just the one.

Steel Panther's picture

Are those same protesters there when Brazil are playing a soccer match?

Coach Potato's picture

Pretty poor analogu. The soccer stadium was there and didnt cost 4 zillion. History shows only the most developed countries go backwards. Have you noticed how Greece is travelling?

Coach Potato's picture

Analogy even

Coach Potato's picture

I mean all but the most developed countries go backwards.

Steel Panther's picture

My point is that they are more likely to protest about things that they aren't interested in. Everyone in Brazil follows football versus obscure sports some have probably never heard of and I'm sure there was a huge overhaul of stadiums for the 2014 World Cup at an horrendous expense to the local economy.

The Thinker's picture

When it comes to spending money for big events its hard not to be reminded of the stadium Brazil built in the middle of nowhere for the World Cup. They spent $319 million building it and it costs them to $250,000 per month to maintain it.

They played four games there. I think it gets another game during the Olympics, but that's about it.

As for the Olympics I imagine there are facilities being built for sports that Brazilians don't even play. Do they play field hockey? Do they need a velodrome? I actually don't know. Maybe they do.

a's picture

4 Gold Medals for Australia now

Coach Potato's picture

Are you anti-protest Steel.

The world and society wouldn't have lots of advancement and change for the better without it.

Coach Potato's picture

Compare those costs Thinker, with the Olympics cost of close to $5B then know that's a bucket of water next to a swimming pool.

I feel almost an air of racism that people of coloured skin are meant to be poor. If people feel their country will suffer because of a couple of week's spotlight, they should at least be respected for showing how they feel about it.

mark ashford's picture

I see where Coach is going with this.
Can Brazil really afford the games? Been talked about for ages.
Just how many wealthy tourists will travel to Brazil because of the games.
Countries like USA, Russia, China, UK, France, Germany and probably Aussie (no doubt there are more) can afford to stage the games.
Others are just going to dig a big debt hole they may never get out of.
Can understand why some Brazilians would prefer some more hospitals, schools, a stable economy and maybe a public health system.

Steel Panther's picture

Certainly not anti protest. Not at all. I agree that the money spent hosting the Olympics could have been better spent especially with so much poverty. The Thinker makes my point when it comes to the amount spent on the purposely built stadium for the soccer World Cup in 2014. I wondered
how much protest there was for this, a sport Brazilians love versus venues built costing millions for sports not even played or known in Brazil.

Coach Potato's picture

Soccer is a religion no different to Christianity, if that's not blasphemy for saying so.
People with spend their months earnings to see their team play.

I take people's point, slightly hypocritical, but I think not really.

Wasn't accusing anything, just checking.

Coach Potato's picture

Gary did you protest in 2012?

Coach Potato's picture

People might see my Olympic spruiking as a bit hypocritical too, bit on the contrary, was just having a "spare a thought" moment.

mark ashford's picture

It's not hypocritical Coach it's a truth.
I love to see Australia win at anything anywhere in the world no matter what it is.
But not at the expense of the local people.
Would love to see sport replace war or religious aggression but it'll never happen. Just look at the Middle East.

Coach Potato's picture

What umbrella does Origin come under ?
Seems to me it's sport, war, and religion all in one.

Coach Potato's picture

Hi Thinker, can you put up the Rd 23 Thinkering page after you've finished your census?

Tailspin's picture

How good were the Womens 7 rugby, bloody awesome.

Coach Potato's picture

$3.5 for Jessica Fox.
She made a gate error worth (minus two) seconds, and the last dash to the line, she hardly paddled. Still almost qualified fastest.
I got the feeling she was cruising.

C'mon J-Fox.
Keep up my 100% record so far, of Gold Medallists from athletes mentioned.

Coach Potato's picture

ABS. Your bloody census page won't open. Just watching hourglasses. You said the bloody thing couldn't be overloaded.
