Round five selections

Melbourne Storm vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – AAMI Park

I shouldn't have doubted the Broncos depth last week, given they won the pre-season comp in Australia while their entire first grade squad were in Las Vegas. Sailor was much more than adequate at fullback and their forwards got the job done without Payne Haas. There are few bigger footballers than Payne Haas, but the Broncos are about to unleash another one, with Benjamin Te Kura making his debut off the bench. He's big. He's real big. They'll be confident after the big win over the previously undefeated Cowboys last week, but they'll need to be. The Storm have had a week to prepare for this game, they're playing at home, and they welcome some of their biggest names back to the side on Thursday. Christian Welch, Jahrome Hughes and Cameron Munster are all back, and all eyes will be focused on the groin of Munster (ewww!) to see if he can overcome what has been something of a curious condition. History is the only guide to everything, but it's a very handy starting point, and I can't ignore that the Storm have absolutely had the wood on the Broncos for years now. The Storm have won their last 11 games at AAMI Park, they've won 14 of their last 15 games against the Broncos, and the last time the Broncos won in Melbourne was 8 years ago. That said, this Broncos squad look like a genuine premiership contender again this season, so if they miss, it won't be by much. The game of the round, and comfortably so.

Verdict – Storm by 2

Result – Storm 34 defeated Broncos 32

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Sydney Roosters – Friday night – Accor Stadium

Last week the Rabbitohs did enough to beat the Bulldogs. The week prior the Roosters belted the Rabbitohs. Given those two events, it stands to reason that the Chooks should be too good for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs have also lost Preston, Morrin and Addo-Carr from the side that played last week, while the Chooks have Lindsay Collins returning. The Bulldogs effort will be there, but they lack the quality at the minute.

Verdict – Roosters by 14

Result – Bulldogs 30 defeated Roosters 26

Newcastle Knights vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Friday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

The Dragons are clearly a fitter team this season, and it's making a difference. It's probably not enough to get them to the pointy end of the ladder, but they'll give plenty of teams a fright this year, particularly if an opponent takes them lightly. They're not likely to fear a trip to Newcastle to a venue where their overall recent record is quite strong. Lomax is on the hunt for a new club, so expect another strong performance from him as he chases potential suitors. The Knights find themselves at the ugly end of the NRL ladder, but they're better than that. A narrow loss to the Cowboys in Townsville and a competitive performance against the Warriors in Auckland is fair form. They bring back Dane Gagai and Jackson Hastings, and the Knights should (ideally) settle on a halves pairing soon. I think they're a better side with Hastings in the halves, and I'd try and find a spot for Gamble on the interchance, but I'm not much of a coach. Of all the games this round, this is the game that I've spent the most time scratching my enormous head about. A coin toss.

Verdict – Knights by 2

Result – Knights 30 defeated Dragons 10

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternon – Accor Stadium

The Rabbitohs needed to win a game, and they did. That said, I wasn't thrilled by the performance, and I didn't get the impression they were either. Relieved more than anything. This is harder, so they'll need to step up to compete, and I'm not sure they have the steps in them. The Warriors have had narrow losses to the Storm and Sharks followed by solid wins over the Raiders and Knights. The injury to Luke Metcalf is a blow but Te Maire Martin is no slouch and will give a good account. Note that Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad returns at fullback for this game, with Tuivasa-Sheck moving back to the centres. It's a backline brimming with class, and I expect them to get the job done.

Verdict – Warriors by 4

Result – Warriors 34 defeated Rabbitohs 4

Manly Sea Eagles vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday night – 4 Pines Park

It's a kind of milestone for Daly Cherry-Evans on Saturday, surpassing club legend Cliff Lyons as the most capped Manly player in the history of the club (310 games). I say kind of because the 349-game career of Steve Menzies included 69 games with the Northern Eagles. Same Same...but Different. In any case, I would Cliff is there to present the jersey to DCE. It's still a milestone, even if I'm putting an asterisk next to it. Manly scored just two tries against the Dragons last week - something of a surprise as their attack had been humming along quite nicely up until that point. If they can only score twice against the Dragons I fail to see how they can score enough points against the miserly Panthers defence. Penrith showed us all they can win without Nathan Cleary steering them around, and not for the first time. They aren't a one-man band that's for sure (although they are clearly a better band when he's there). James Fisher-Harris returns for the visitors and he'll go straight back to doing what he does best. It's worth the cost of entry to see these two fullbacks going around on Saturday night. Terrific footballers and decent humans to boot. Manly won't concede easily it home, but Penrith are a very hard team to tip against in any circumstance.

Verdict – Panthers by 4

Result – Sea Eagles 32 defeated Penrith 18

Redcliffe Dolphins vs Wests Tigers – Saturday night – Suncorp Stadium

What an age we live in - the Dolphins are on the top of the table and the Tigers are in the top eight. The Dolphins lost by 25 in their first game of the season, and the Tigers lost by 20, so it's quite the outcome. I suspect the Tigers victories over the Eels and Sharks is stronger form than the Dolphins victories over the Titans and Dragons, but it's early days and we shouldn't get too carried away with what anything means. The last time the Dolphins played at Suncorp they were disappointing, so they'll be keen to give their Brisbane-based fans a better showing. The Tigers can easily win this without surprising any of us, but the absence of Galvin in the halves is a big out. If the weather clears in Brisbane on Saturday night they'll get 30000+ to this game. I might even wander down and check it out for myself.

Verdict – Dolphins by 4

Result – Dolphins 26 defeated Tigers 16

North Queensland Cowboys vs Gold Coast Titans – Sunday afternoon – Queensland Country Bank Stadium

The Cowboys completion rate was about as poor as is possible. Almost every team will punish you for a performance like that, and teams like the Broncos will punish you badly. I'm going to assume that was a bad day in the office for the Cowboys, and that they'll be better this weekend. If not, yikes. Jake Granville plays his 200th game for the Cowboys this weekend, and I expect the club to rise for the occasion and celebrate with one of the clubs most popular sons. As for the Titans, another big last week after an improved start. There were moments where they were better, but not 80 minutes of them. Hopefully they are gradually improving, but they are coming off a very low base.

Verdict – Cowboys by 16

Result – Cowboys 35 defeated Titans 22

Canberra Raiders vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – GIO Stadium

Ricky Stuart wouldn't have shouted any soft serves for the boys after the loss to the Sharks. Losing hurts, but it hurts even more when you are leading 18-0 after 23 minutes. A quiet bus ride back to Canberra I suspect. You would hope they wouldn't switch off this time, and an 80 minute performance from the Raiders can definitely compete with the Eels. I'll back them to bounce back against an Eels side without Moses in the middle. His kicking game eases the pressure on the Eels forwards, and without him their pack might struggle against the Raiders engine room.

Verdict – Raiders by 4

Result – Raiders 41 defeated Eels 8

Greetings football fans

I have updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp after round four. Another tough round of tipping, as is often the case early in the season. Anyone who scored more than 4 from 8 can feel pleased with their efforts. Manyana holds a slender lead at the tip of the tipping table, with a very large pack close behind. As always, if anyone notices anything with the scores that needs attention just let me know.

I'll aim to have my previews and selections published by Wednesday this week.

Hey Frens,

Big news! I'm happy to announce I have a new pet termite. His name is Clint.

OK, let’s do this thing …

Storm vs. Broncos @ AAMI Park
Probability @ 65-35
Ladder Position = Storm
Bookies Favourite = Storm

Verdict: Two quality sides going at it, this will be hard to pick. The Storm will be nice and fresh from the extra week off, have some big guns returning and are at home. Storm by 6.

Bulldogs vs. Roosters @ Accor
Probability @ 25-75
Ladder Position = Roosters
Bookies Favourite = Roosters

Verdict: The Bulldogs seem to be coming along nicely. I don’t think they’ll win but +10.5 in line betting might be worth some thought (gamble responsibly if you do). The Roosters are the classier side here and they’ll want to get back on track after last week’s loss. Roosters by 6. Begurk! 🐔 Begurk! 🐔

Knights vs. Dragons @ McDonald Jones
Probability @ 70-30
Ladder Position = Dragons
Bookies Favourite = Knights

Verdict: The Knights were so-so last week but they might’ve had some excuses. The Dragons were pretty good knocking off Manly but I’m not quite sure which side’s gonna turn up Friday night. This might be a very interesting encounter but with big names returning I’ll go the Knights by 8.

Rabbitohs vs. Warriors @ Accor
Probability @ 40-60
Ladder Position = Warriors
Bookies Favourite = Warriors

Verdict: Dunno, I’ve got a feeling this might be a cracker. I know the Rabbitohs are better than what they’ve been dishing up lately and they’ll be without Johnston (yeah I know one player doesn’t make a side) but with CNK back and Roger’s 200th, I’m on the Warriors by 6.

Manly vs. Panthers @ Brookvale
Probability @ 35-65
Ladder Position = Panthers
Bookies Favourite = Panthers

Verdict: Manly seem to have gone off the boil whereas the Panthers are showing what a classy outfit they are. Panthers by 10.

Dolphins vs. Tigers @ Suncorp
Probability @ 65-35
Ladder Position = Dolphins
Bookies Favourite = Dolphins

Verdict: Given the recent form of the Tigers, I think this might be closer than the ratings and bookies prices suggest. The question is, do I think the Tigers can get it done against a very handy Dolphins in Brisbane. The short answer is no. Dolphins by 6.

Cowboys vs. Titans @ Townsville
Probability @ 75-25
Ladder Position = Cowboys
Bookies Favourite = Cowboys

Verdict: The Cowboys got found out last week against the Broncos but we all know that currently they’re far better than the poor ol’ Titans. This could get ugly. Cowboys by 16.

Raiders vs. Eels @ GIO
Probability @ 55-45
Ladder Position = Raiders
Bookies Favourite = Raiders

Verdict: This could be a close one. I haven’t been able to get a handle on the Eels so far and that’s what worries me. The Raiders weren’t all that good last week but they’re at home and will want to bounce back. Raiders by 4.

Bye: Sharks

Let’s finish off with another “Song of the Week”…

Love, love, love this one. And no it’s not because we share the same birthday (but not the same year) 😂. This might not be what you’d expect from this fella. Magnificent guitar work on this one. Yeah Baby!

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Cheers 🐔 🐔 🐔

Hi Thinker

Don't go down for a look at the Dolphins and Tigers game on Sunday. I've bought tickets for me and 3 cubs for Saturday night at 18.35.

I still think they will get a big turnout, let me know if you do go and I'll buy you a beer.

I'm not sure if you had forgotten but you actually submitted your tips for round 4 on Tuesday morning at 5.35am. You were actually the first tipster to tip that round, so you definitely weren't late.

Unfortunately, the Dolphins and Warriors were the only two you picked correctly there.

Storm, Roosters, Knights
Rabbits, Panthers, Dolphins, Cowboys, raiders.

Evening All
What does everyone think about the refereeing tonight, I have to say that I did tip the Storm but Ashley Klein took it upon himself to change the result of that match.
Towards the end when Klein called a tackle complete without any hands on him and I think Munster stole the ball and scored.
There were a lot of other contentious decisions that may have changed the result but we will continue to reward Klein with the big Refereeing jobs.
Anyway, that was a top contest and could have gone either way, bad luck Rocket.

Tiger

Mary S's picture

I don't know half the time what some of the referee's decisions are about Tigerholic, but Munster didn't score.
Storm tries made by -
Eliesa Katoa 19'
Xavier Coates 23'
Eliesa Katoa 35'
Will Warbrick 57'
Tyran Wishart 73'
Jahrome Hughes 76'
Great and very close game to the last seconds

Cheers,
Mary

Fittler sucks's picture

Can’t even remember doing that been working too hard, what a crap effort, thanks for the response mate.

The Colonel's picture

I have the same problem. Tried all Fri morning because forgot on Thurs. I've tried getting them into the comments but don't seem to having any luck there.

MGM's picture

@Tigerholic - I agree with you mate , especially about Munster and the "tackle completed".... there wasn't a hand on him! Munster saw that and knew the rule better than Klein.
Klein is one of a few refs where the opposing teams should get two Captain's Challenges each !

The Last Samurai's picture

Typical Roosters 20 to Nil down in 25 with a send off...so overrated I guess it's just the name tipping them...tip them at your peril until they fire about round 15!!!...I'm avoiding them wherever I can

Mary S's picture

Hi Colonel,
Have you tried putting the remainder of the games in the comments now?
Cheers,

Hope you and the family are enjoying Stradbroke Island (I've had a few great family trips there also).
When you get time could you please enter my tips that I put here in the comments at 7:40pm on Thursday.
When checking everyone's "tips on one page" I also noticed that The Last Samurai's tips were missing also (hope he got them in somewhere, maybe an email?)
Thanks mate.

@Tigerholic,
Don't know if you get to see Saturday matches Tiger , but the Sea Eagles v Panthers match was another Howler for the match officials , especially the ref.
As soon as I saw Todd Smith walk out I thought "Heeere we go" and remembered our little "whinge" from Thursday night (Smith was another one that I was thinking of when I suggested some refs should come with two captains challenges for each team ).
But I wasn't expecting him to actually become Manly's 14th man out there for the last 10 minutes of the first half and Gift them an 8 point lead going into the sheds !
The worst was the runaway try off a blatant knock on from Tommy Talau, who's facial expression showed he was expecting to hear the whistle. "100 times out of a hundred" that's a knock-on said the Fox commentators who were surprised that Smith allowed it to play on but expected him to send it up as a "no try" which would actually make Smith look clever.
But this is Todd Smith we're talking about and so he blew his whistle and the useless bunker stayed SILENT !
5 mins earlier than this, Manly's 14th man blew a penalty in front of the post for a "flop" which was just a normal tackle, giving them a 2 point lead .
90 seconds later he penalised Liam Henry for holding down when in actual fact Henry was heavily concussed and semi-conscious and wasn't even capable of moving and didn't know where he was.
What's the rule on that anyone ?

To be fair, it was mainly just this 7 or 8 minutes period that were Really bad, but it was the difference between both teams going in to the break 6 points all and definitely changed the course of the match.
. It's no secret here that Penrith are 17th on my Favourite Teams List but all footy fans deserve better than this.

tigerholic's picture

Afternoon MGM
I didn't see the Manly/Panthers game but I did watch the highlights or low lights from the Manly Referee. The try you refer to was definitely a knock on, it really spoils the quality of the game and as you said, WTF was the bunker doing, probably grabbing a coffee.
Even in the Tigers game last night, Gerrard Sutton made some mistakes. I couldn't hear the commentary but the disallowed try in the first half then give us a penalty doesn't make sense.

I hadn't been to the footy for a while and last night gave some solid reasons as to why the footy is best watched from home. Not only the cost of 4 beers and a gold plated carry tray for $43.50, $70 for 4 meals, $14.50 per frozen cocktail, a 30 minute wait for a train on the Ipswich line when on the opposite line going to Brisbane, Redcliffe there were 4 trains in the time we waited.

Then, there was a Tiger supporter giving some lip all night to some Dolphin folk, midway through the second half, his missis moved him further down their row away from the big bad doplhin fans who were giving it back to him.

Shortly after the tiger supporter got serious and started to abuse the dolphin fans who laughed at him, 10 mins from full-time, the old Tiger fan got up and left challenging the dolphins to a fight, 2-3 accommodated him and followed him up the stairs, all entertaining but fairdinkum, the footy is there to enjoy. Then the amount of times that thew row in front stood up to go to the bar blocking your view, I think I saw half the game.

All the best

Daylight Saving is Over ! (fireworks emoji).
That should solve half the problem hopefully.
Wouldn't an ad blocker be a good idea for the rest ?... I honestly have never seen an ad on this site.

@Tiger ,
The howling mistakes seem to be getting louder don't they , and not even close calls a lot of them.
Annesley needs to act and only he would know how (above my pay grade ... I'd probably make it worse by issuing one last chances and chopping off heads !)
But Howlers Have to Stop ... especially from the Bunker. The bunker has NO excuse for blatant howlers that bind Freddy can see from his recliner.
And speaking of your recliner Tiger, I think I can hear it beckoning !
It's comfortable, it's safe and the food & beverages are cheaper too and I hope you kept the gold-plated tray :-)
Now about that train trip .......
I guess Rocket would tell you that that's the price you pay for being from "the wrong side of the tracks"! :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

Seriously though , it's All Bad News for the NRL , the Club$ and their supporters , the players trying to dodge the whistle , and the guy that just wants to take his family to the footy and enjoy the day out .... the "NRL experience" is not what it used to be ..
