Round six selections

Newcastle Knights vs Sydney Roosters – Thursday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

It's hard to get a read on the Roosters performance last week, and it's been hard to get a read on the Roosters all season. After an impressive first round victory over the Broncos they've been inconsistent by their standards, and find themselves outside the top eight as a consequence. At a headline level you could excuse them for the loss to the Bulldogs last week - played in biblical conditions and down a player (or two) for much of the game. It needs to be noted that they were down 18-0 before they were outnumbered and before they lost Tedesco to injury. That they found a way to come back and make that a contest is a credit to them, but they shouldn't have been in the position they found themselves. Inconsistent...as mentioned earlier. They're without Tedesco, Walker and Young on Thursday so plenty of changes in the backline. Their forwards are still first class, so strong in fact that Siua Wong can't even force his way onto their interchange. They'll more than hold their own against the Knights pack, but all the backline changes will leave them a little clunky on a short turnaround. The Knights are unchanged from the side that dealt with the Dragons last week and they should be good enough at home.

Verdict – Knights by 4

Result – Roosters 22 defeated Knights 20

Melbourne Storm vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday night – AAMI Park

I have no doubt the Bulldogs are a team on the rise, but this could be a few levels above them for now. The Storm have won 12 in a row at home, they've beaten the Bulldogs in 7 of their last 8 encounters and the Dogs have won just one game away from home in their last ten attempts. It is good to see Josh Addo-Carr return, after Cyclone Latrell took him out a little recklessly two weeks ago. The Storm simply continue on, quietly maintaining their empire of power. Given their spine of Papenhuyzen, Munster, Hughes and Grant, and a coach without peer, we shouldn't be surprised.

Verdict – Storm by 10

Result – Storm 16 defeated Bulldogs 14

Brisbane Broncos vs Redcliffe Dolphins – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

The Broncos (probably) should have beaten the Storm last week - but for a few poor decisions with the ball in hand. That's handy form, particular when they lost their key playmaker and organiser before half-time. Reynolds won't be playing in the third episode of the Battle for Brisbane either, but Reece Walsh is a surprise inclusion. Perhaps the giant Cowboy hat offers magical healing powers. You'll struggle to get a ticket to this game, but it would be a nice game to get along to. The two fullbacks could just be the two most dynamic attacking players in the game - we should celebrate them while we can. Ladder positions can be a little deceptive early in the season, and the table-topping Dolphins are a genuine outsider here against the 11th placed Broncos. That's pretty fair, when you look at the competition each team has faced up until this point. The injuries to Kaufusi and Farnworth diminish the contest further. While I expect the Dolphins can make a game of this, the Broncos haven't lost a Battle for Brisbane yet and I can't see them losing this one either.

Verdict – Broncos by 10

Result – Broncos 28 defeated Dolphins 14

New Zealand Warriors vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday afternoon – Go Media Stadium

Sixth versus seventh and I'm happy calling this the game of the round. The Warriors have now won three in a row after competitive losses in the first two weeks against top four opponents. They've won six of their last seven games in Auckland and the Warriors are the hottest ticket in town. Manly have knocked off some competition heavyweights already this season - firstly the Chooks in round two and the defending premiers last week. Note that both those games were at Brookvale, and they've lost their last two games away from home against the Eels and the Dragons. The Warriors are a more difficult opponent than the Eels or the Dragons, and the road trip to Auckland is much tougher than Western Sydney or Wollongong. A road trip so treachorous in fact, that you need a plane to get there. Capewell and Watene-Zelezniak return for the home side this weekend. For the visitors, Reuben Garrick is out for a week - with Ben Trbojevic slotting into the centres and Cherry-Evans looking after the goal-kicking. He had no trouble last week in his milestone game, kicking 6 from 6. It might take a Cherry-Evans masterclass to pick up the two points on Saturday. That could happen without surprising, but I can't tip against the Warriors at home.

Verdict – Warriors by 7

Result – Warriors 22 drew with Sea Eagles 22

Parramatta Eels vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – CommBank Stadium

The Cowboys defense needs some work, and I'd expect they'll be spending some time on that this week. There's no doubting their attack, with 157 points scored already this season and comfortably more than any other team in the competition. With that in mind, the Eels will need to score plenty of points to win this one, and when I look at that Eels backline, I'm not convinced they have what it takes. That gets even harder when their first choice goalkicker isn't available. The Cowboys haven't always found it easy picking up wins in Sydney, but I'll be tipping them in this.

Verdict – Cowboys by 8

Result – Eels 27 defeated Cowboys 20

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night – Accor Stadium

It's not likely to be the most interesting game this round, but it will probably be the most talked about. Rabbitohs coach Jason Demetriou had to do something, but I'm not sure if dropping Damien Cook was the thing that should be thunged. Latrell Mitchell gets some time on the sidelines to think about a few things. What's left of the Rabbitohs roster has to pull themselves together and make a game of this for the sake of the club and the coach. To make matters worse, they're facing a Sharks lineup fresh from a week off, and strengthened by the return of Briton Nikora. It could get ugly, but I hope it doesn't.

Verdict – Sharks by 8

Result – Sharks 34 defeated Rabbitohs 22

Wests Tigers vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Sunday afternoon – Campbelltown Sports Stadium

Those that frame markets on these contests would suggest that this is the closest game of the round, but I'm fairly bullish about the Tigers on Sunday. They were competitive against the Dolphins last week, something we can't say about the Dragons when they lost to the Dolphins 38-0 in round two. It's only their second home game for the season, and the last time they played at home they beat the Sharks 32-6. The Dragons have won just the one game away from home this season. That win was against the Titans, and not many people are rating that form very highly at the minute. If Apisai Koroisau doesn't already have his name etched into the NSW Origin number nine jersey he can make certain of that with another stellar performance here.

Verdict – Tigers by 8

Result – Dragons 24 defeated Tigers 12

Canberra Raiders vs Gold Coast Titans – Sunday afternoon – GIO Stadium

The Raiders are having no trouble scoring points this year, while the Titans have now conceded more than 28 points in their last nine outings. There only points this season were thanks to the Bye. There are five stages of grief, and if a leaked video can be believed, Titans coach Des Hasler has recently gone through stage two - Anger. The stages to follow are Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. Hang in there, Des. Sunday is going to hurt.

Verdict – Raiders by 30

Result – Raiders 21 defeated Titans 20

Greetings football fans

I have updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp after found five. Five of the top six teams on the NRL ladder are based outside Sydney. What makes that even more astounding is none of those five teams are the grand finalists from last year.

A surprising large number of us picked the Raiders over the Eels and quite a lot of us found the Sea Eagles. As a result there were plenty of sixes and sevens scored in round five. Manyana is our outright leader after five rounds, but there are 16 tipsters within two points of the frontrunner. A tight contest, as always.

If anyone notices any issues with the scoring just let me know.

I'll have my previews and selections for round six published on Wednesday.

Hi Thinker
Just an update for you.I think the Ads are getting worse...lucky to get this note out.Your first comment for the week is covered by ads...or in sections. Once you go into round 6 selections you get bombarded by them.
Hope you get this

You might be right - it feels like Google have made changes. I'll see what I can do.

I think I've managed to remove the pop-up ads that block most of the screen when you switch from one page on the site to another (like from the home page to a tipping round page). That one really bugged me so I'm really hoping it's worked.

Hi Thinker,
I turned off my BitDefender progamme to see how your site was looking after your removal of large pop-ups.

There was an ad in the middle of your initial comment today, and several others appeared very rapidly, but from comments made last week by The Last Samurai and others, it seems to be an improvement.

I will turn BitDefender on again though, once I post this!!

Cheers,
Mary

Hi Mary and Thinker
Thanks so much for your efforts.
It was good Mary you saw Thinkers comments cut up by ads.I thought I was the boy who cried wolf.
It seems improved at the moment

I don't understand.
Is there some reason you guys don't want to use Ad Blocker ?
Surely you have Internet Security , even if it's a free one it will have adblocker

Esra Star's picture

Ya know,if the Rabbits win the next few games without Mitchell,he may have to have a real good think about his attitude.

Mary S's picture

Hi Esra Star,
Good to see you commenting again - didn't know if you were OK when tips (& comments) were not forthcoming this season!!

I agree with you about Mitchell. Looks like he needs a hard think right now.

Cheers,
Mary

The Thinker's picture

Mitchell is certainly an enigma. I honestly don't think he's a fullback - he was a better footballer (and a happier footballer) at centre. He's earning a million a season, and the highest earning centres in the game are earning a fair bit less than that (Holmes 875, Crichton 825, Manu 800).

Some of the things he can do on the field are simply awesome, and then he does some stuff that infuriates many of us...including me.

Hard to know how to solve this one. We may have to wait and see how Wayne Bennett plans to fix this.

Esra Star's picture

Thanks,Mary.
I found i wasn't enjoying the game when i had things riding on my tips. I am finding it much more enjoyable now. Also, some of the new rules over the last few years,i think, have ruined the game for me as well as the poor refereeing. But,that's just a personal observation.
On another matter. I think the number of injuries has been caused by the 6 again rule. The game is now so fast that these things are only going to get worse.

Hey Frens,

Anyone see that “leaked” video (with audio) of Des Hasler’s bollocking of the Titans players after last week’s game? Des was dropping F-Bombs left, right and centre. Sort of funny but absolutely no problem from me, it had to be said in my opinion. It’d be a shame if some “princess” accused him of workplace bullying. Yeah, old school I know but that’s just how I roll. Anyone interested can do a simple google search and you’ll find it on Tik-Tok. Lastly, ads? What ads? Never had a single one in 10 years on here. Using Firefox if that helps. OK, let’s do this thing …

Knights vs. Roosters @ McDonald Jones
Probability @ 60-40
Ladder Position = Roosters
Bookies Favourite = Knights

Verdict: Ponga vs. Manu should be interesting. Teddy, Sam and Dominic missing will be huge for us. Given the way the Knights went last week and being at home has me doing the unthinkable. More than happy to take a hit but I’ll go the Knights by 6.

Storm vs. Bulldogs @ AAMI
Probability @ 75-25
Ladder Position = Storm
Bookies Favourite = Storm

Verdict: Even though the Bulldogs were very good last week, this one should pick itself. Having said that though, the Bulldogs aren’t as bad as the +17.5 line suggests and some may be tempted to throw a few shekels at it (gamble responsibly). At home I’ll be going the Storm by 10.

Broncos vs. Dolphins @ Suncorp
Probability @ 75-25
Ladder Position = Dolphins
Bookies Favourite = Broncos

Verdict: The Dolphins will be without Felise and Herbie so it might make it that little bit harder. I still think the Broncos are a better side, even without Reynolds. Interesting to see how Walsh’s head (face) holds up. BTW, what’s with the black fingernail polish? Kids these days eh? This could be tight but I’m on the Broncos by 6.

Warriors vs. Manly @ Mt Smart
Probability @ 65-35
Ladder Position = Warriors
Bookies Favourite = Warriors

Verdict: The Warriors aren’t doing much wrong at the moment and I’m impressed with how they’re progressing. Manly are the real deal (so far) but the excitement of last week is finished now and they’ll have to deal with the NZ home crowd. This is actually a pretty hard one for me to decide on and I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if Manly win this but I’ll go Warriors by 6.

Eels vs. Cowboys @ CommBank
Probability @ 40-60
Ladder Position = Cowboys
Bookies Favourite = Cowboys

Verdict: Except for Moses being missing, I’m not sure why the Eels aren’t performing. They should be doing better than they currently are. Something’s definitely amiss. Yeah, the Cowboys had a little lapse last week but overall they’re ticking along nicely. I feel they have an edge in class here and should win. Cowboys by 6.

Rabbitohs vs. Sharks @ Accor
Probability @ 30-70
Ladder Position = Sharks
Bookies Favourite = Sharks

Verdict: The Rabbitohs are in a world of hurt at the moment. Things are just not working for them and to make matters worse, Mitchell’s out for 3 weeks (keep your elbows down son). The Sharks will be “fresh” after their bye last week and have the class edge here. Then again I’m reminded of what happened in Round 3 so who knows. Anyway, Sharks by 14.

Tigers vs. Dragons @ Campbelltown
Probability @ 60-40
Ladder Position = Tigers
Bookies Favourite = Tigers

Verdict: Overall, I’m somewhat impressed with the Tigers and give them a chance on Sunday. The Dragons are still confusing me with their efforts. I haven’t tipped the Tigers so far this year and I’m sorely tempted to this week but I have a “feeling” the Dragons might get up here. Yeah, it doesn’t make much sense and I could get found out here but I’ll go the Dragons by 4.

Raiders vs. Titans @ GIO Stadium
Probability @ 75-25
Ladder Position = Raiders
Bookies Favourite = Raiders

Verdict: The Titans were pretty average last week (except for that little burst in the second half) and I just can’t see what they can do to turn that around against pretty handy opposition. The Raiders are playing decent footy at the moment and they should get up easily at home you would think. Raiders by 12.

Bye: Panthers

Let’s finish off with another “Song of the Week”…

Staying with the “guitar theme” again this week, I thought you might like this one. I know I do.

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Cheers 🐔 🐔 🐔

Morning All
Welcome to one of the best days of the week. Thursdays are golf day and the first game of footy for the week, doesn't get much better than that.

I couldn't not make a comment about Thinker and his tip in the Tigers V Dragons match. I had a dig at him when he didn't tip the Tigers 2 weeks ago and I now recognise that he has shown some faith in them this week.

My only concern is that we looked a little lost last week without Galvin, Sullivan didn't impress me with his attack, guidance and or defence.

Have a great Thursday all.

Tiger

The Thinker's picture

@Tigerholic

Agreed they'll be a better unit when Galvin returns.

I still think they get the job done this weekend.

Best of luck on the golf course today...nice weather for it.

Hello Mr Thinker,
I feel that there has been an error with my scores to date. I have checked my tips over the last five rounds, and they are as follows:
Rd 1: 3
Rd 2: 6
Rd 3; 4
Rd 4: 3
Rd 5: 6 giving a total of 22 not 16?
Can you check why I'm down by 6 points please?
Many thanks and kind regards Johnny Awesome

Hey Mr The Thinker,
P.S. Yep, I know my tipping is going through another dry spell and just as bad as the trees bribing the dogs, during a drought, but I doubled checked and I'm definitely short by 6. I'm planning on a comeback in the second half of the season just like St George will, so check it out, please 🤣🤣🤣

So disappointing for the Dolphins to lose Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow in such a ridiculously unnecessary chase and tackle on Corey Oates...
Oates Blatantly tackled a Dolphin without the ball before scooping up the ball and running away with it ... the ref doesn't blow his whistle to begin with (which he DAMN WELL SHOULD HAVE!!) , and while the crowd starts to go wild (half of them cheering on Oates and the other half screaming for the penalty , the ref gives a P!ssweak little toot toot that can hardly be heard !
I don't know who to be more annoyed with , Oates for going on a run when he Knew his blatant offense was on camera ,Hammer for bothering with the chase , his team-mates for not screaming at him to stop , or the F#(King ref for not sucking in a Big one and reblowing his whistle !... He probably thought it was of entertainment value to let it play out, but LOOK at the end result !... How LONG will the Dolphins be taking the field without their star fullback ??
... All in all this should serve as a salient lesson to all referees not to let play continue unnecessarily. .. I Really hope it gets addressed in Annesley's weekly briefing and by the press .... it's Not a Small matter. .. Are they concerned with player safety , players wellbeing and reducing the injury toll ?...then they need to Put This on their list..
.. P.S. .. when I saw it live I thought to myself "sheesh, the Hammer could have hurt himself in that awkward tackle" and sure enough, a few minutes later the commentators are agreeing that that tackle is where Fidow had done the damage. :-(

tigerholic's picture

MGM

Well said mate, there are a lot of issues that need addressing at the referee level. So many different interpretations of rules like the the leg pull, the flop. How many leg pulls were let go last night in the Storm V Dogs game.

Have a great weekend.

Tiger

The Thinker's picture

I was gutted when the Hammer went off. Not only do I have a soft spot for the Dolphins (and QLD), he's probably my favourite player to watch at the moment.

Hi Mr Thinker,

With the Warriors/Sea Eagles Draw, do we all get a point?

It's hard to remain neutral on Latrell Mitchell and my opinion of him, on and off the field, has gone up and down over the last few years.
Many have said "What goes on in his head?"
I believe I've identified a common thread in his behaviour that runs through his onfield 'brain snaps", his increasing "lazy periods", his expletives during interviews and on social media and his now common breaches of protocal -
................Respect is a One Way Street for Mitchell.
... He refers to himself as a role model and he seems happy and proud about that , and I understand that he does make himself available for various community based and charitable projects. But when he negates that with all kinds of bad behaviour, I find myself wondering "who is the real Latrell?".
When he threw that elbow at Shaun Johnson, take it from an old karate instructor, that was Not "raised his elbow", it was Not "lead with his elbow", it Was an elbow Strike... (and it was just dumb luck that Johnson's jaw was not broken.)
This guy is playing Angry and he is dangerous to any other opposing player.
It's only a few weeks ago he was angrily speaking out (posting on social media) about player welfare and that "the NRL better deal with this sh!t". He was, of course, referring to Esra Mam's mental welfare but physical welfare counts for just as much if not more. Your career won't end because of a racial slur , but at the moment I have a mental picture of Joey Manu"shattered, puffed up cheekbone .
Or how about Tohu Harris' close call with a broken neck during Mitchell's 13 minute rampage?
You may think I'm exaggerating now because the NRL let him off without charge. But I say the NRL missed their assignment to reign in this loose cannon whose first thuggish instinct was to whack his arm between Harris' legs and execute a spear tackle.
Thankfully he pulled out of it, probably as he realized that moments earlier he had been put on report already or maybe the other Rabbit in the tackle called out urgently.... Either way , Tohu Harris had a close call with a wheelchair. He was at Latrell Mitchell's mercy in that moment.
Also, there are plenty who would argue that Josh Addo-Carr was knocked unconscious because Mitchell dangerously came in knees first on a player already being bundled into touch. Mitchell (and JAC)was lucky he twisted last second and made contact with the hip, but he Definitely went in knees first and carelessly added to a fellow players list of severe concussions. The next round Mitchell runs onfield like nothing ever happened ... JAC didn't.
Imagine driving home from a match with your two children in the back seat wearing their Rabbitohs jerseys and listening to post match chatter on the radio and the Self Proclaimed Role Model starts an interview where Every Sentence includes a f**k or a s**t and then in the middle he declares "I don't care if I'm swearing boys, honestly", and then continues with more of the same.
Once again the NRL did Nothing.
Every time I see Latrell Mitchell standing stoically and deliberately silent during our National Anthem I immediately think of the time a few years ago when he gutlessly tried to hijack his ethnic heritage and culture in a pitiful attempt to excuse himself for breaking the country's Covid Laws and the NRL's protocols for his own selfish indulgences , proving that he believes himself to be above our laws and an exception to the rules that his peers and colleagues and fellow Australians were struggling to obey , many of whom were making much bigger sacrifices than anything that was required of him ..... Like the people who's loved ones were dying alone instead of being surrounded by the love of their family members and then buried without a funeral or a memorial.
That's what I think of when Latrell Mitchell takes a stance on Anything indigenous.
So, as I said at the beginning, I find myself wondering who is the real Latrell Mitchell ?... Is his community work just him building up a bank of brownie points that he believes entitles him to be so outspoken and disrespectful when he sees a chance to take some moral highground?
..... Too harsh?
Then answer me this -
Where is his respect for his fellow players' physical wellbeing ?
Where is his respect for the game that has given him So Much ?
Where is his respect for his team mates when he leaves them in the lurch because he wants to play like a thug ?
Where is his respect for his coach who's already under enough pressure ?
Where is his respect for his club with the most time spent on suspension in the entire league ?
Where is his respect for the NRL that's already given him too much leeway ?
Where is his respect for sponsors with his expletive ridden comments and interviews ?
Where is his respect for the fans that want to see their stars in action, giving their best effort all the time , Not sometimes ?
...
For me , Latrell Mitchell's one way street has come to a dead end.

Gummy Sharks's picture
