Round ten selections

Redcliffe Dolphins vs Manly Sea Eagles – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium

The Dolphins have only left Queensland once all season, and that was a trip to Darwin. Incredibly, their first visit to NSW doesn't take place until round 15. Mind you, their record at Suncorp Stadium (aka the other home ground) hasn't been flash this year. A few handy returns for Thursday night help their cause, with Farnworth a timely return to replace the injured Niu in the centres, and Kenny Bromwich back following concussion protocols. For the Sea Eagles, Ben Trbojevic returns in the second row, while Croker (concussion) and Brown (hip injury) drop out of the seventeen. Croker is a big out, given the workload he carries in defence. This year the Sea Eagles have regularly jumped out of the gates, only to let opponents back into games. If the Sea Eagles are tiring late in each half, the Dolphins have enough tiny speedsters to make them pay. Points aplenty on Thursday night - I'll take the home side in something of an upset.

Verdict – Dolphins by 2

Result – Dolphins 30 defeated Sea Eagles 24

Penrith Panthers vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday night – BlueBet Stadium

Potentially the game of the round, with both sides heading into Friday night in winning form. The Bulldogs have won their last two over the Knights and Tigers - prior to that a narrow loss to the Storm and a narrow win over the Roosters...that's solid form. The Panthers form is almost always solid, and often the benchmark. Last week they dismantled their opponent while their best player had a rest in the coaches box. He's back this week, and likely to play a leading role. The Bulldogs are yet to win an away game this season which is a concern. More concerning, the last time the Panthers played a game at Penrith they flogged the Broncos. Given the Bulldogs coach, general manager and a fair chunk of their squad used to work at Penrith they should know their way around the joint. This contest will be a great measure of how far the Bulldogs have progressed, but I expect the class of the Panthers will see them prevail.

Verdict – Panthers by 8

Result – Panthers 16 defeated Bulldogs 10

Parramatta Eels vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – CommBank Stadium

The players that won't be playing will get as much attention as those that do, with the Broncos chief conductor (Reynolds) out for much of the season, and Gutherson and Moses unavailable for the Eels. With Reynolds logical replacement (Madden) also injured, the Broncos have called upon Josh Rogers to play his second NRL game. The much more experienced Corey Oates returns for the injured Arthars, who won't be back for quite some time either. The Eels have won just the one game since the end of March, and that was a narrow victory over the under-performing Cowboys. Note that the Eels have lost their last nine games without Gutherson at fullback. It's a figure I can't ignore.

Verdict – Broncos by 10

Result – Broncos 30 defeated Eels 14

Wests Tigers  vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday afternoon – Scully Park, Tamworth

The Tigers have now lost five in a row, and that's far from awesome, but I hope Tigers fans don't get too disheartened. Their last three games have included losses to the 2023 grand finalists and a competitive loss to the in-form Bulldogs. The Knights played the Bulldogs a few weeks ago and were towelled up. I expect the Tigers will find this easier than recent outings, and the likely return of Koroisau bolsters their chances immeasurably. I rarely trust the Knights when they're expected to win, and if they take this game lightly they might be in for a shock.

Verdict – Tigers by 4

Result – Knights 20 defeated Tigers 14

St George Illawarra Dargons vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Saturday night – Netstrata Jubilee Stadium

The Dragons, short on coin after a few lean seasons, asked some high school student on Airtasker to put together a jersey or two for last weekend, with comically misspelt results. Now the beancounters at the Dragons, short on coin after a few lean seasons, have determined that it's cheaper to simply change their name to the Dargons rather than get the jerseys re-made. I for one salute the fiscally responsible Dargons. I don't know what a Dargon is, but let's face it, their former name was a myth anyway. Meanwhile, the Rabbitohs have problems that a spellchecker cannot resolve. Mitchell returns after serving a suspension for playing angry. He'll almost certainly need the run, almost certainly get frustrated at some point in proceedings, and almost certainly let his frustrations get the better of him again. He gets angry because he cares, but there's a better way. He joins a handful of some of the most experienced players in the NRL in the red and green on Saturday night, but those wise old heads will be surrounded by players without a lot of experience. Dion Teaupa joins Walker in the halves, and Gehamat Shibasaki has been dragged out of the Townsville feeder club to take a spot on the wing. Attentions Dargons peeps - note that I spelt Gehamat Shibasaki correctly. It's really not that hrad.

Verdict – Dargons by 8

Result – Dargons 28 defeated Rabbitohs 14

Melbourne Storm vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night – AAMI Park

Second plays first in what is likely to be the match of the round. You'll need to pay a subscription service if you want to watch it though, or drag yourself down to AAMI Park. I never shut up about the Sharks and the easy draw they get nearly every season, but thus far the teams they've played are 14th, 8th, 15th, 9th, 17th, 10th, 9th and 13th on the ladder. They're on top of the ladder and they can only beat why they're scheduled to play against, but it's worth remembering that they haven't had too many difficult opponents this season. They finally come up against one of the NRL juggernauts, and the Storm will be without Hughes and Papenhuyzen, so the luck of the draw falls the Sharks way yet again. The Sharks haven't won a game in Melbourne for six years, and the Storm are hoping to win their 15th game in a row at home. Given the history of both clubs at this ground, the Storm remain a warm favourite, but I'll be tipping that the tearaway Dally M leader (and former Storm player) Nicho Hynes to steer the visitors to victory.

Verdict – Sharks by 1

Result – Sharks 25 defeated Storm 18

Sydney Roosters vs New Zealand Warriors – Sunday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

The Warriors haven't won a game since they beat the Rabbitohs in round five, and that form hasn't exactly held up this season. Now they face a red-hot Roosters team that put the cleaners through the Broncos in Brisbane last start. Not only that, the Chooks have a raft of key players returning on Sunday - Tupou, Waerea-Hargreaves, Leniu and Radley. If you weren't already picking the home side here, Waerea-Hargreaves is lining up for his 300th game for the club. He becomes just the fourth Rooster to achieve that feat. I expect the Roosters will celebrate the milestone in style.

Verdict – Roosters by 14

Result – Roosters 38 defeated Warriors 18

Gold Coast Titans vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon – CBus Super Stadium

The Cowboys have now lost four in a row, but the last game they did win was against the Titans in round five, and they did so quite comfortably. The Titans have improved since then, but three of their last four losses have been to top four teams. They should find this a little easier. Note the Titans have lost Tanah Boyd to a hand injury. His kicking game, in general play and for goal, will be missed. It should be an entertaining contest regardless, and Fifita will be keen to impress given the list of teams trying to lure him away from the glitter strip.

Verdict – Cowboys by 2

Result – Titans 20 defeated Cowboys 18

Greetings football fans

I have updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp after round nine. Just about all of us managed a pass mark for the round, but only three of us managed to tip 6 from 8. Congrats to Walby, The Tide Head and shotfromthehip.

As always, if you notice any issues with the scoring just let me know,

I'll have my previews and selections for round ten published on Wednesday.

All the best

Thanks for that Mary.
James Graham's ideas were well supported by the rest of the panel and it's a very general consensus that changes need to be made .
The miserly NRL seem to think it's too hard a problem to solve but I think even the bunker officials themselves would welcome such a simple change.
The hardest part , that Anasta already identified , is offering enough money for the most qualified people to be interested in taking the job.

When the NRL let go of their false economy mindset and realise that better performance and better decisions from the bunker (howler free) equals less dissatisfaction, less anger, more support and participation from all those invested in the game

Hey Frens,

Noticed we had a comment from someone dropping a link to a website for development and design for gamers. Dude, seriously? This is a Rugby League site in case you didn’t know. I didn’t click on it because of the Russian wording (Ding! Ding! Ding!). I mean it may be legit but still ... 😉. Just my 2c worth. OK, let’s do this thing …

Dolphins vs. Manly @ Suncorp
Probability @ 45-55
Ladder Position = Dolphins
Bookies Favourite = Manly

Verdict: Yeah, the Dolphins had a good win last week and have a couple returning but Manly are still a talented side and will want to make up for their “embarrassing” loss against the Raiders last week. Manly by 6.

Panthers vs. Bulldogs @ BlueBet
Probability @ 75-25
Ladder Position = Panthers
Bookies Favourite = Panthers

Verdict: The Bulldogs have been having a crack lately but they’re gonna find this one extremely difficult on Friday night. Looking forward to seeing how Nathan goes now that he’s back. Panthers by 16.

Eels vs. Broncos @ CommBank
Probability @ 25-75
Ladder Position = Broncos
Bookies Favourite = Broncos

Verdict: The Eels seem lost without Mitch and now Gutho is out. Missing those two will be telling. Broncos fans don’t worry, last week was just “one of those games” and you had some key injuries. You’ll bounce back this week. Broncos by 8.

Tigers vs. Knights @ Scully Park, Tamworth
Probability @ 40-60
Ladder Position = Knights
Bookies Favourite = Knights

Verdict: Not sure if the Knights had a good game last week or if the Warriors had a bad one. Up against a struggling Tigers this week and I think they’ll get the job done. Knights by 8.

Dragons vs. Rabbitohs @ Kogarah
Probability @ 60-40
Ladder Position = Dragons
Bookies Favourite = Dragons

Verdict: This one could go either way. The Dragons have conceded 80 points in the last fortnight (Roosters & Sharks) while the Rabbitohs have conceded 96 (Panthers & Storm). I reckon the Dragons have been the better side in the last 2 weeks. The Rabbitohs will get Latrell back and I could be wrong but I don’t think that will help. Dragons by 4.

Storm vs. Sharks @ AAMI
Probability @ 60-40
Ladder Position = Sharks
Bookies Favourite = Storm

Verdict: This should be an absolute cracker. First and second going toe to toe – bring it on. The Sharks are in dazzling form at the minute but in my opinion, they haven’t really been tested so far. This is the test they need. The Storm have lost Jahrome and Paps but they are a strong side and they’re at home. I think the Storm will have the Sharks’ measure this week. Storm by 4.

Roosters vs. Warriors @ Allianz
Probability @ 75-25
Ladder Position = Roosters
Bookies Favourite = Roosters

Verdict: The Roosters will welcome the return of Tupou, JWH, Radley and (finally) Spencer Leniu (off the bench). That’s good enough for me. I think the Warriors disappointment will continue for another week. Roosters by 8. Begurk! 🐔 Begurk! 🐔

Titans vs. Cowboys @ Cbus
Probability @ 35-65
Ladder Position = Cowboys
Bookies Favourite = Cowboys

Verdict: The Titans have been competitive of late and might fancy themselves here. The Cowboys have had a tough last month and interestingly, their last win was against the Titans in Round 5. The Cowboys need to win this to get back on track and I reckon they will. Cowboys by 8.

Bye: Raiders

Let’s finish off with another “Song of the Week”…

This one is 44 years old, possibly older than some of you who might be reading this 😁.

There was a formula

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Cheers 🐔 🐔 🐔

Sorry Mr T , but just before we start Round 10 ....
... Is anyone else FED UP with these Ridiculous "melees" which, more often than not, are bunged on just before the end of the match ?
Send them ALL off or to the bin or to hell for all I care and the Fine them, especially the late arrivals that are just there to inflame the situation.
Yes, YOU Reed Mahoney , you PRETENDER !
Let me rephrase that .... . you Short Assed Pretender who knows you can't be punched into the ground by the Big guys you run in late to pick a so-called "fight" with!... I saw you sh!t yourself a week or two ago when Hetherington shaped up to you in the tunnel ! How Lucky are you that he was just playing with you and that he knew he couldn't get away with putting you in your place. ... I was a fan of you and your skills Reed , but you've lost me , especially after seeing your post match onfield Fox interview - "Yeah nah, just seen the boys in a bit of a scuffle & thought I'd poke me nose in & have a bit of a look".
. Anyone my age can remember when an onfield fight was the Real Thing.
Those dangerous and unruly days are over , so let them be over.
There will always be fair dinkum blow-ups and thankfully players have better self control these days and hold themselves back , but beyond those flashpoints , beyond the initial blow-up , the NRL needs to throw the book at the Pretenders who will hence forth be referred to as "the Mahoneys" (or the Klemmers).
They're just putting on a show and the show is pitiful. It's handbags at ten paces and even the head butts are just head "pushes".
You're not fooling anyone you Hams!

The Thinker's picture

Heh Heh.....Hams :-)

It seems lots of people are wondering why David Fifita would sign with the Roosters over the Panthers, if the clubs offered the same deal.

Before we all assume the worst, I'll suggest a couple of things:

* Fifita has a partner in the NRLW, and the Panthers don't have an NRLW team.

* Former Titans coach (Holbrook) works at the Chooks.

* He's been living on the Gold Coast for years. If you had a choice between living at Bondi or living at Penrith, what would you choose?

MGM's picture

Panthers might also be a bit too regimented (strict) for him in comparison.

MGM's picture

.It didn't take the Funker very long this week Did it ?!!
Gerard Sutton should be fined and the shown what a real slap on the face feels like.
.. Seriously Though ... The NRL wants everyone , players, clubs, coaches, commentators (hi Gus) and fans to be less critical and more tolerant of human error from match officials and I agree .... BUT ... the bar must be higher for the bunker officials who have all that technology and camera angles and time to NOT MAKE HHHHOWLERS.
You can Not call for more respect and threaten to come down Hard on whingers and send players to the bin at the end of round 9 and then in the First match of round 10 have Gerard Sutton in the bunker (the Most Senior official for the night) cough up such a Farcical decision.

If I was Abdo and Annesley and Bellew I would be SO angry at Sutton for completely undermining my call for more tolerance (not to mention the threat to "sin bin players that whinge about decisions") I wouldn't let Sutton Anywhere Near a bunker for at Least the rest of the season. (if it Were me , I would put a flag in his hand and not let him pas the sideline .. but that's just me)

Andrew Abdo and Geoff Bellew seriously need to immediately meet with James Graham and Braith Anasta to absorb and discuss their very logical suggestions that they put forward on Fox 360 a few days ago.
I would Not include G. Annesly after watching his deceitful defense of the bunker's call to not award DWZ a penalty try.... The meeting should not include Anyone unprepared to admit when mistakes have been made and accept the urgent need for changes.
