Round sixteen selections

Manly Sea Eagles vs Sydney Roosters – Friday night – Brookvale Oval

It's a replay of the 2013 Grand Final, and could this be a preview of the 2014 Grand Final? I'm thinking yes. I expect the Sea Eagles to start slight favourites on Friday night based on recent form, a win over the Roosters in round four and the Chooks less than stellar record at Brookvale (33% win rate). Trying to break these teams down into their parts is complicated - I'd say the Sea Eagles have an edge in the halves and the centres and the Roosters have a definite edge in the forwards (particularly the back row) and on the bench. There's not much in it when it comes to the fullbacks, hookers, wingers and kicking in general play. Forwards usually determine who wins football games, but the Brookvale crowd might help lift the Sea Eagles pack to match it with their superior opponents. Only a blowout win to either team would surprise me. This could easily be one of the games of the season and I'm expecting Origin-esque intensity. Not to be missed.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4

Result - Sea Eagles 24 defeated Roosters 16

Brisbane Broncos vs Cronulla Sharks – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

As my postcode begins with a '4' I'll need to stay up late to watch the other Friday night game. Let's hope Ray Hadley can keep me awake while he describes this 'contest' to me. To think I tipped the Sharks last weekend. Sheesh! You won't see me doing that again anytime soon. I'm not sure what sort of handicap start the bookies will give the visitors but I'm willing to wager the home team will cover it anyway. If you need to miss one game on Friday night make sure it's this one. Sharks = not waving, drowning!

Verdict – Broncos by 20

Result - Sharks 24 defeated Broncos 22

Wests Tigers vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – Campbelltown Stadium

Struggling alongside the Sharks at the bottom of the deep blue sea sea are the Canberra Raiders. If any team can plumb the same depths of wooden-spooniness in season 2014 it's the Raiders. The Green Machine was once akin to the printing press or the cotton gin - today they look like a piece of machinery left to the elements in an abandoned gold town. Meanwhile the Tigers coach is about to extend his contract - not bad for a man most described as 'dead coach walking' at the start of the season. Raiders will try, Tigers will win.

Verdict – Tigers by 10

Result - Tigers 19 defeated Raiders 18

North Queensland Cowboys vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Saturday night - 1300SMILES Stadium

The good news for Cowboys fans is their team is back at home this weekend. They probably need to win this one too, as they've got three away games in a row after this round - and they're all in Sydney. I can't rule them out on Saturday night, and if we could add just one Matt Scott to their team I'd be tipping them. Unfortunately their forwards have to contend with three Burgess brothers and that will be heavy going. They also back up from a Monday night away game and the Bunnies should be fresh after a bye. Looks like one of those contests where Jonathan Thurston tries his heart out and falls short.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 4

Result - Cowboys 20 defeated Rabbitohs 18

Parramatta Eels vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – Pirtek Stadium

I haven't got the slightest clue who wins this game, so I'm banking on the Eels impressive record at home this season and the assumption that daytime conditions suit their style of play. I may not know who wins, but here comes my one and only bet for the weekend - I'm backing the overs in the total points scored. This looks like one of those 42-34 kind of games I'm thinkering. Gamble responsibly etc etc.

Verdict – Eels by 4

Result - Knights 16 defeated Eels 10

New Zealand Warriors vs Penrith Panthers – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

That Sea Eagles/Roosters game clearly looks the game of the round, but if it doesn't stack up this may be the game that does. Both teams are in pretty good form and both are getting through the Origin period without too many interruptions. Ivan Cleary would love to knock off his old team in New Zealand and I'm sure he has the game plan to do so. The Warriors at Mt Smart in the Sunday timeslot are hard to tip against but, somewhat surprisingly, the Panthers have a pretty good record at this venue (5 from 8). Here comes my upset for the round.

Verdict – Panthers by 4

Result - Warriors 30 defeated Panthers 20

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Melbourne Storm – Monday night – WIN Stadium

The Storm had just started finding their gears when they lost Cooper Cronk to injury. Not surprisingly they stalled at that point, but in the last two weeks they seem to be back on song. Ben Roberts as a playmaker always gives me palpitations but perhaps Craig Bellamy is the man to set him right. They remain a well balanced outfit even without Cronk and they may have unearthed some future top-liners in Ben Hampton and Kurt Mann. They both look like they're twelve years old, but ten years of first grade will see them looking like Billy Slater before they know it. Another upset...probably

Verdict – Storm by 2

Result - Dragons 24 defeated Storm 12

Wally Lewis - round sixteen selections (in bold)

Manly – Birds of a feather flock together…The Guru being a chicken aficionado knows in Australia our Chicken is supposed to be hormone free? Uncle Nick’s show birds face some tough questions and could be called to the Royal Poultry society for a please explain…Sonny (gh)B Williams and co are under the pump. Manly are good at home on a Friday and the birds of prey should strike while the poultry is distracted. Man 1-12

Broncos – The grub showed us his best and blamed the coach, though The Guru has found out the real answer to the Shire’s woes. Coach Daley made the reveal with a call out of a ‘Chiropractic emergency’ sweeping the NSW Blues team. It seems half the side can’t Lie straight in bed and as a result are suffering bouts of severe insomnia…Aaron Woods has the worst case Daley says, we’re very concerned, we think he has a problem with MC Hammer…’ I didn’t touch it’, is all he can say, over and over to every phone call. Medical professionals have narrowed down the host of this terrible affection to a member of the Sharks team and recommend isolation of the lot just to be sure. Bronco’s by a million. Guru Gold tip of the round.

Tigers – The cats will crush Ricky’s Raiders into the Campbelltown turf. Since 2008, the Tigers have a 9-1 record over Canberra. In other developments, Harry has been briefed on the troubling condition suffered by his two rep players but has said it won’t have an impact. This Guru can’t see the Green Machine winning anytime soon. Tigers 13+

Souths – The NQC struggled against Newcastle who didn’t look that great, and now the Burgesses are in town things get harder. The Guru heard a whisper that Robert Lui was shopping for warm clothes the other day, for a quick little visit to the nation’s capital. No word whether Tony Abbott is going to use him as an ambassador for climate change just yet. It’s never cut and shut when the Cowboys are at home, but with injury woes the Bunnies should prevail in Townsville.

Parramatta – Sandow’s new job for the Bureau of Statistics has come into question with NRL salary cap auditors demanding to know how much he is being paid to perform his governmental duties. The Guru didn’t contact reps from either party who denied the whole thing existed. The Knights put in their best performance in quite some time last week but they’re a long way from the 8, and that’s where the Eels are looking to stay. The Guru fancies Semi Trailer for a double, and Hayne for Man of the Match in a convincing win. Parra 13+

NZW – Victory over a depleted Brisbane side last week may not seem the best preparation for playing the ladder leaders but on closer inspection the Rd 15 game was tough. Both sides had a few faux pas but The Broncos made the Kiwi men work for their win. NZ had a few brilliant flashes in attack with Konrad ‘The Driver’ Hurrell seeing good depth with his penetration and displaying skills more akin to a star of a different genre. Penrith need to be tested and this game will be one Ivan has targeted to see if his men have what it takes. NZ 1-12

Melbourne – The Dragons have beaten the Storm only five times in the past fifteen years. A good journalist always follows the trail, and the trail of evidence for this game is made of cash. The money’s running for Melbourne and The Guru fancies the Storm @ the $2 line being offered by enterprising bookmakers. St Benjamin is getting back into the swing of real football, but the greatest game on earth is cruel mistress with her favours, and Benji's ran out years ago. Melbourne are Monday night specials.

Hi all
Agree with the Guru this week 100% and the Thinker except for the Warriors/Panthers. Think our Kiwi cousins will get home at home.
So it's...
Manly
Broncos
Tigers
Rabbits
Warriors
Eels
Storm
Thanks as always goes to The Thinker

Johnny Ray's picture

Alright here are my tips for this week. Let's do this !

Sea Eagles by 14 points
Broncos by 10 points
Raiders by 6 points
Rabbitohs by 12 points
Warriors by 2 points
Eels by 8 points
Dragons by 2 points

Thanks Thinker.

Warriors are playing in pink this week to honour all New Zealand woman in sport so go Wahine's ! Kiwi Power ! Peow ! Peow ! ;-D

a's picture

Here are my tips

Roosters by 2 Lets hope Roosters do a Wrecking Ball to Manly like they do with everyone else

Broncos by 6 I think Sharks will fight but Broncos for me

West Tigers by 6 I think Tigers to beat the hard working Raiders here

Rabbitohs by 6 I hate to tip against my team but I am doing it this weekend

Warriors by 1 I think Warriors to be a wrecking ball to the Panthers 5 game winning streak

Eels by 6 I hope Eels are in the top 8 this year

Storm by 6 I hope Storm do it this week

The Joker's picture

And what makes us all think manly will beat the chooks?

Johnny Ray's picture

I don't know Joker ! Maybe it's because it's being played in Brookvale not Chookvale, Manly's home ground, given them advantage ? Also incidentally speaking about home grounds, am I only dude on this site that think Allianz corporate logo looks like some guy hand giving you the fingers ? Look out it for next time Roosters play home game ! ;-D

Guru Craig's picture

That's a very interesting Question Joker.

The Guru feels Brookvale offers a significant advantage to Manly, that advantage translates into ref's calls and points. If this game is close, and it should be, even an opportune penalty from a raucous crowd can make the difference.

Manly have convinced The Guru so far in 2014 they are the more complete side, willing to dig deeper and do the harder yards. Although The 'G' loves to hate them, Manly have a great player bond, capable of winning tough games even without their big stars.

The Guru doesn't think it's a cut and shut game by any means, it'll be a close game that could be decided by factors that are impossible to predict. One thing that's true, if Manly come to play, they are a very difficult team to beat.

The winner of this game will likely be by the 1-12 margin.

Johnny's picture

Agree with all the h/h predictions.

Don't think wests will win by 13+ though, they have only done so twice this season and raiders made some promising changes and in reality didn't play too poorly against the inform dogs.

Tipping broncos to only win 1-12 as well, sharks were unlucky not to score a couple against the red hot eagles and will be playing with something to prove in light of recent media comments. Carney will gel much better and gallen will run riot

vlad sleagulls's picture

Manly 13+ into
Broncos 12+ into
Tigers 1-12
Bunnies
parra
Warriors 1-12
Storm 21+.

newbie from perth's picture

Hi everyone,

Another weekend of footy is upon us. I was looking at the ladder and it struck me that if the Warriors beat the Panthers, the Rabbits lose or the Roosters win by a load more points than the Rabbits do, then the Mighty Chooks “might” end up on top of the ladder. Yeah I know there’s a lot of “ifs” but still possible. But I guess you don’t really wanna hear me raving on about stuff like this so better to move along to this week’s games …

Broncos - Broncos have been pretty good of late if you forget their loss to the Warriors last Saturday. Plus the poor ol’ Sharkies are just plain struggling. Broncos easy one would think.

Roosters – who else eh? Thankfully the Newbie will be able to watch his beloved Chooks live on GEM at 5.30PM. Stop off at the bottle shop on the way home from work and sit back and watch the Roosters play glorious football and hopefully do enough to win the match. We should be nice and fresh after the bye plus Boyd’s back. I hear that Manly have lost Watmough and Stewart so hoping that helps our cause. Go the Chooks!

Tigers – Tigers and Raiders eh? No idea. Flip a coin as I sometimes do. Tigers for me.

Rabbits – welcome back Inglis, Te’o and McQueen plus they’re off a week’s rest. Rabbits for me.

Warriors – yeah I know the Panthers are equal top but just got a feeling the Kiwis at home should get the job done. Kiwi Power – Peow! Peow! (sorry Johnny Ray, it was too good an opportunity to pass up).

Eels – think this one is pretty cut and dried. Then again…

Storm – reckon the Storm have remembered how to play footy and especially after last week, should have too many guns for STG.

OK people, good luck with your tipping this week and good luck to your team as well. Cheers.

Roosters Sharks Tigers Bunnies Warriors Knights Storm

Steel Panther's picture

For me the big question this week isn't whether Manly will beat the Roosters. It's will the Sharks score any points this round?

The Joker's picture

I have changed to broncos.. sticking with roosters

a's picture

Sorry it was not working at home

Roosters by 2 I hate Manly and I want them to lose

Broncos by 8 Do I have to explain why

West Tigers by 6 Tigers will be fighting Raiders here

Rabbitohs by 2 I hate tipping against my team but I have to this weekend

Warriors by 4 I think Warriors to win in a thriller here

Eels by 2 I think Eels to win in a thriller here

Storm by 8 I think Melbourne to win away here

Steel Panther's picture

Another round of footy is upon us and I'm still looking for that elusive clear round. Well done to those who achieved that last weekend.

Roosters - I like Manly. I like them a lot and I like them more at Brookvale on a Friday night but if the Chooks are serious contenders this year they have to step up and win tonight. I'm not confident but like the Thinker said I agree they have the edge in the forwards which might just be enough.

Broncos - At home against a team who have had three consecutive doughnuts it's the Broncos all the way for me.

Tigers - I just can't tip the Raiders. The Tigers to win at Campbelltown.

Rabbitohs - The Cowboys continue to under achieve and disappoint. JT is having a poor season. It's like he's trying too hard and his defense is poor. Bunnies fowards to run at him and lay a winning platform.

Warriors - A must win for the Kiwi outfit and this Sunday will be a good test. The Warriors were average last week and need to step up the intensity against their old coach who should never have been let go.

Eels - A solid home record this season sees me leaning towards another victory for the Eels. Chris Sandow to keep his mouth shut and run the show.

Storm - Melbourne are starting to look like the Melbourne of old and should account for the Red V.

Thanks Thinker. Have a good weekend everyone and good luck with your tips!!!

The Joker's picture

Well... haven't I changed my tips many times today!!
Finally happy and settled with..
Roosters, Broncos, Tigers, Rabbits, Warriors, Knights, Dragons

Johnny Ray's picture

Holy s*** f*** ! Cro-nill- a Sharks has just beaten Bronco's ! Dude :-(

Steel Panther's picture

No where was the unpredictability of the NRL more evident than last night at Suncorp. A team who hadn't scored for over 280 minutes, down 22-0 early in the 2nd half and playing away from home suddenly throw out the form guide to end up winners 22-24! No surprises that Manly won at Brookvale but my gamble on the Roosters I thought was worth it. Would I (and millions of others) gambled on the Sharks. Hell No!! My search for a clear round remains elusive and my Friday night tipping curse still lingers......

Johnny boy's picture

Amazing turn around for the sharks, new it was going to be that tight but got a little bit ridiculous there in the second half.

Wests 1-12
Warriors 1-12
Rabbits 1-12
Eels + 12
Storm 1-2

Johnny Ray's picture

Raiders should of won ! S*** ! :-(

Johnny Ray's picture

Todd Carney could have a new career opportunity if meetings today don't pan out in his favour. Todds pioneering work with self urine analysis could see the former Blue start a biding war among anti doping agencies for his services, 'imagine if we could bypass the laboratory and remove those margins of error, we could literally, get it straight from the horses mouth so to speak. Someone of Mr Carneys skillset could train our testers to develop the sensitive pallet required and nab the cheats on the spot.
