Manly Sea Eagles vs Wests Tigers – Friday night – Brookvale Oval
Two teams hoping to bounce back after a loss but the Eagles appear to have more bounceability. Penrith cut swathes through the Tigers on the fringes last weekend and the Sea Eagles backline are more than capable of same. Cherry-Evans is likely to back up and should bring his 'A' game after a confidence-boosting effort in Origin III. Couple all that with the Tigers rather woeful record at Brookvale and a home side win seems likely. The Thinker might throw a lazy dollar or two on Brett Stewart to score the last try of the match. I've been doing plenty of heavy lifting in the 'sports-watching' department in the last few weeks and that little bet should help me keep my eyes open until the 80th minute. And I can't let this match pass without mentioning that Tigers forward Liam Fulton has announced his retirement - a great clubman and a footballer I've enjoyed watching over the years.
Verdict – Sea Eagles by 16
Result - Sea Eagles 40 defeated Tigers 8
New Zealand Warriors vs Parramatta Eels – Saturday night - Mt Smart Stadium
A couple of things are worth watching for in this game. Firstly, Chris Sandow playing at fullback for the Eels is interesting. I have no idea how he'll go under the high ball but I look forward to seeing it. Secondly, Manu Vatuvei and Semi Radradra face off against each other, and that looks like fun. Every year the Warriors make a run up the NRL ladder and this year is no exception. Origin period is often the time it happens but they've managed to do so very quietly this season. A win at home on Saturday night keeps them in the hunt for a top four spot, and no side in the competition would benefit from a top four finish more than the Warriors. Not bad for a team that sacked their coach not so long ago. The Eels beat the Warriors quite convincingly early in the season, but they are yet to claim victory at Mt Smart and I'm not expecting them to break their maiden status this weekend.
Verdict – Warriors by 8
Result - Warriors 48 defeated Eels 0
Melbourne Storm vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Saturday night – AAMI Park
The Storm have named Smith, Cronk, Hoffman and Chambers for Saturday night and will assess Cooper Cronk when he returns to Melbourne - watch this space. Smith was proppy at times on Wednesday night so there's some possibility of an unlikely late withdrawal. One man I can't see lining up is Bulldogs playmaker Josh Reynolds, who needs to overturn a suspension to take his place. Based on the assumed line-ups I have to stick with the Storm - assuming the big three play they'll have their tails up after a dominant display on Wednesday night. If any team can make inroads on the top four it's the Storm - their draw for the remainder of the regular season gives them a genuine shot at it.
Verdict – Storm by 2
Result - Bulldogs 6 defeated Storm 4
Gold Coast Titans vs Canberra Raiders – Sunday afternoon – CBus Super Stadium
This game had me worried, and with Myles and Bird (probably) unavailable and doubts about Kelly (very unlikely) and Mead (slightly less unlikely) I became even more worried. I'm sticking with the home side, as the Raiders record on the Gold Coast is terrible. The locals will also be celebrating the career of Ashley Harrison at this game, so I expect what is left of the Titans forward pack to lift and create the platform needed. If that happens, the Titans prevail. There's also been a ton of money for the Titans on Sunday, and as we all know the punters are never wrong (eyes rolling).
Verdict – Titans by 4
Result - Raiders 36 defeated Titans 20
Cronulla Sharks vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – Remondis Stadium
Last year these sides progressed to weeks two and three of the finals series. This year they're in a battle to avoid the spoon. The difference between these teams is daylight, and I literally mean daylight. I've seen the Sharks play some of their worst football on Sunday afternoons, and it's a timeslot that lets the Knights bring out their best. And the Wayne Bennett announcement today may give the visitors another reason to bring their boots with them.
Verdict – Knights by 4
Result - Knights 31 defeated Sharks 18
Penrith Panthers vs Brisbane Broncos – Monday night – Centrebet Stadium
Easily the game of the round for mine. The table-topping Panthers against the Broncos - a team on the fringe of the top four. This is a big ask for the visitors - the Panthers have won 8 from 9 at home this season and they were most impressive last weekend. At the time of writing we still don't know which Origin players will back up for the Broncos, but there's always a doubt over Justin Hodges. Of greater importance is the injury to Panthers playmaker Peter Wallace - a halfback that brings a wealth of experience and composure to a young Panthers backline. Penrith will and should start favourites, but I expect the Broncos to be smarting after (somehow) letting two points get away from them the last time they took to the field. Remind your eyeballs on Monday - this one is worth watching.
Verdict – Broncos by 4
Result - Panthers 35 defeated Broncos 34

Hi everyone,
What the hell happened last Saturday? How the Sharks came back and beat the Chooks still has me sobbing and bewildered. The "second half assassins" struck again! Then again, credit where credit’s due. Well done Sharks.
As usual another weekend of footy is upon us so let’s get into it…
Manly - I pick ‘em last week and they lose. Typical ain’t it? Couldn’t do it again surely and especially at home. They would have to do this pretty easy eh? Manly for me.
Warriors - The Thinker’s analysis is good enough for me. What Johnny Ray said…
Storm - I’ll go the Storm Troopers but not with a lot of confidence. Possibly go either way. Should be a corker.
Titans - the Raiders are having a pretty average time of it this year and I’m banking on the Titans to do enough to NOT equal the “most consecutive losses at home” record. Titans for me.
Knights - I know this doesn’t make any sense at all but the Newbie is tipping the Knights based purely and solely on how much he dislikes Paul Gallen (no offense intended to the rest of Sharksville). I know he’s a good player and so on but geez he irks me something fierce. I was booing, hissing and hoping he’d do something stupid every time he got the ball Wednesday night. The guy just won’t stop whingeing and complaining. Drives me insane! Carn the Knights!!
Panthers - sitting on top of the table is good enough for me. Favs with the bookies is good enough as well. I don’t mind the Broncos but just think the Panthers will continue on their merry way.
OK people, good luck with your tipping this week and good luck to your team as well. Cheers.
P.S. seeing as a few here have made mention of the upcoming WC Final, the Newbie reckons it will be a win to Germany. Pulling a scoreline out of my whats-a-name I’ll plonk for it being Germany 3 - Argentina 1.

The dust has settled on another Origin series. Can't help but think that the best team lost. Other thoughts include is it time for JT to hang up his Origin boots? Should Dave Taylor ever put on a Qld shirt again? And have we seen the birth of a new Grub at Origin level in Josh Reynolds?
This week I'm tipping:
Manly - Surely they can't be flat two weeks in a row.
Warriors - At home against a (possibly) Hayneless Eels it's the Warriors for me.
Storm - Hopefully the big four back up.
Titans - Not entirely convinced here but the Raiders are woeful home and away.
Sharks - Again not totally convinced but will the news on Bennet lift or deflate the Knights? Does this also mean another club for Darius Boyd?
Penrith - The home ground advantage and a fresh 17 leans me towards the Panthers.
Best of luck eveyone and have a great weekend. Looking forward to a full compliment of games again next week. Thanks Thinker!!

P.S. Germany to win the World Cup Final 2-0. Let's just hope it doesn't get decided by a penalty shoot out!!

I think Germany 3-1 in the world cup final I hope it does go out to a pentaly shoot out

I'm keen on both outsiders this weekend - Argentina to win the Cup. Primarily because I want the following statement to remain true:
"No European team has won a World Cup tournament played outside Europe."
And the Dutch - a team I've been booing for weeks can have third place because it doesn't really matter. Brazil look to be tortured beyond repair and I can't see them getting up for this one.
Better than $3 about both my tips...if either one wins I'm making a profit.
Enjoy your weekends everyone.

Manly - Home ground should help, Manly will do it for the Wolfman.
Warriors - Beware Sandow at fullback, the little fella goes ok at number 1. NZ will be too big and the Hayne princess needs a rest The guru hears.
Storm - Bellamy will be looking to start a run at the finals and The Guru expects Melb to get a close win. Des played a few cards last week and had some luck, cant see him getting away with it over the Storm.
Titans - The Titans should win this, Canberra don't look able to beat themselves. The Titans are fading but this game is a winner and they don't get much easier than the Raiders.
Knights - Wayne Bennett made some very harsh comments when announcing his departure from the Knights. The Guru has not heard the great man speak like that, ever. Newcastle will show us what the go is, win it for Wayne...if. or get smashed if the other option is true.
Broncos - Brisbane are far too good for Penrith. Monday night at the foot of the mountains will be very cold though and Brisbane will have to play to win. Penrith are a decent side though they've had a creamy run with the draw and are getting found out. Broncos to get a solid lead then get run down and win by a couple.
The Guru fancies Ze Germans 3-0

Well done "a" for tipping the score and result in the Broncos/Panthers game. You're now back in the lead with 8 rounds to go.
Agree with you Christine don't think I'll bother tipping the titans again and those Broncos better lift their game if they want to be there come September.

Mark ashford do you want a laugh titans are vowing resurgence ,i don't care what crap they say i'm tipping knights to slaughter them , a don't change your tip it only comes back & bites you in the ass i speak from experience i have done it too many times & it never works out well .
Submitted by mark ashford on
Yeah funny that Christine. I too think the Knights will have a win seeing it's for Alex.
BUT we better not forget they were on top of the ladder a few weeks ago.
Just shows what a horror run of injuries and origin will do to you.
My Broncos have the Warriors at home this week and though I hate to say it the Warriors are playing the better footy.
Not sure who I'll take yet. Anyway good luck with the remaining rounds.
