Round ten selections

Brisbane Broncos vs Gold Coast Titans – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

I have some unfortunate news for Broncos fans this weekend. The Thinker will be tagging along to this game on Friday night, and the last time I was at Suncorp and saw the Broncos win was quite some time ago. How long ago? It was a Sunday afternoon game and the Broncos racked up 60 points over the Newcastle Knights. I can't quite recall the year but Brent Tate and Shaun Berrigan were Broncos back then so it's been a while. Since then I've seen them in the flesh about eight times...for no wins. The Broncos should be paying me to stay away quite frankly. That's quite a run of outs when The Thinker is in the house and I have no reason to ignore the trend. It should be noted that the Broncos have won seven of the last eight south-east Queensland derbies (including a 20 point win earlier this year), and that's quite a trend as well. I'm a little worried about the Broncos attack though. Ben Hunt joins Wallace in the halves (replacing the injured Scott Prince) and I'm not certain that's a winning formula, and I hope that Parker and/or Wallace have been practising their goal-kicking all week. You guys cost The Thinker his credibility last weekend, and it almost cost Rob his house. The Titans to upset the locals in a close, low-scoring arm wrestle of a game.

Verdict – Titans

Result - Broncos 32 defeated Titans 6

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Wests Tigers – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

Two days ago I came up with the rather hilarious moniker 'Benchy' Marshall. I guffawed to myself several times, and mentally noted to use that hilarious pun in my round ten preview. Alas that darn internet has beaten me to the punch, with some other wag coming up with exactly the same hilarious pun. You have to be quick these days I tells ya. The Rabbitohs should put this game to bed pretty quickly and it might be all over before Benchy gets on the park on Friday night. During the last two weeks the Tigers have conceded 70 points and scored 10 - against opposition that aren't in the same league as the Bunnies. Enough said really.

Verdict – Rabbitohs

Result - Rabbitohs 54 defeated Tigers 10

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Parramatta Eels – Saturday night – WIN Stadium

Here's something a little odd to talk about at the pub. Last week the Dragons scored more tries than their opponents and lost, while the Eels scored less tries than their opponents and won. It's not often the Dragons get beaten by goal-kicking and it's even more unusual that they were beaten by a field goal - I'm sure Jamie Soward will make amends this weekend and knock over three or four one-pointers for good measure. Parramatta have certainly tried hard over the last fortnight but that just means they are due for a drop in intensity. An away game on a cold night against a side they've beaten once since 2008 seems like the sort of game where they can drop their bundle. Plenty of interest in the fullbacks for both sides, with Jarryd Hayne all but beating the Broncos on his own last week, and some heavily tattooed youngster will be making his debut for the mighty Red V at fullback. The Dragons fans are renowned for their hilarious banners ('Everyone Loves Weyman'  and 'Me So Hornby' are big favourites in my household). For those wanting to come up with a banner for Josh Dugan I recommend 'Just Josh-ing' or 'Josh Spice'). See if you lot can do better than that. Dragons at home.

Verdict – Dragons

Result - Dragons - 32 defeated Eels 12

Penrith Panthers vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday night – Centrebet Stadium

I am here to expose the charade. Raiders fullback Reece Robinson is pretending he has a younger brother or cousin named Travis, and for three weeks he's been backing up for the Panthers on the wing. This is all well and good for now but I ask you this Reece Robinson - what jersey are you going to put on in round fifteen when the Raiders take on the Panthers? See...you didn't quite think this through did you son. Still, I admire your enthusiasm and I'm hoping Mal Meninga has noticed your versatility. Anyhoo back to Saturday night, and it's another one of those games where a former coach takes on his old team and vice versa. If I was Matthew Elliott I'd get to the ground early and steal your old parking space off Ivan Cleary. That should put him off his game from the get-go, and we all know how easily frustrated Ivan Cleary can get. Rather strangely the away team has won five of the last six clashes between these sides, and that is particularly strange for the Warriors who rarely enjoy the trip to Australia. If this was a Sunday game I'd pick the Warriors, but I'll take the Panthers on a cold Saturday night at Penrith. Ivan Clearly might have some ideas on how to beat his old side (providing he can overcome his carpark rage). Perhaps not the best looking game of football on paper, but worth a look-see if only to check out Nigel Plum tackling the living bejangle jangles out of those giant Warriors forwards. He is the Trevor Gillmeister of the new millenium.

Verdict – Panthers

Result - Panthers 62 defeated Warriors 6

North Queensland Cowboys vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

After last weekend I don't want to get carried away with my gambling advice, but $1.83 seems a nice price for the Roosters on Saturday night. Am I missing something? I suppose they back up from Monday night, and they have to travel, and they have to do it without Waerea-Hargreaves...but $1.83? The Cowboys attack has been misfiring all season and they would need to produce their best display of the year to challenge the Chooks in defence. In their last seven games the Roosters have conceded a whisker over six points a game. On Monday night they played at Brookvale, had a man sent off, and still conceded just one try from a kick. Gamble responsibly.

Verdict – Roosters

Result - Roosters 12 defeated Cowboys 8

Cronulla Sharks vs Canberra Raiders – Sunday afternoon – Shark Stadium

Tipping the Raiders away from Canberra is always a risky strategy, but if they can beat the Storm in Melbourne they can win this, particularly on a Sunday afternoon as daytime conditions definitely favour the visitors. That enormous Raiders pack can win the forwards battle and I'm confident their backline can finish the game off from there. Did any of you catch Anthony Milford last weekend? Keep catching him. The Sharks are favourites - the Raiders will win.

Verdict – Raiders

Result - Sharks 30 defeated Raiders 20

Newcastle Knights vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Sunday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

Knights coach Wayne Bennett gave his mob the silent treatment after their capitulation last weekend. No-one likes the silent treatment, but thankfully Willie Mason was there to fill the void. I'll assume he told his team-mates to pull their f*#@ing fingers out or some such colourful suggestion. It's a nice suggestion, and I almost tipped the Knights here, but I keep looking at that Bulldogs forward pack and I can't help but like them. That starting pack is just enormous, and their bench forwards aren't too shabby either. And it's worth noting that Krisnan Inu is back and will resume goalkicking duties once more. The Knights usually play well in these Sunday afternoon games at home but I'll take the Dogs in what I expect to be the game of the round.

Verdict – Bulldogs

Result - Knights 44 defeated Bulldogs 8

Melbourne Storm vs Manly Sea Eagles – Monday night – AAMI Park

If the purple machine doesn't turn up to play on Monday night I'd be very surprised indeed. These two teams don't have a lot of love for each other and they'll express themselves accordingly. I keep going back to their clash in the third week of the finals in 2012 where the Storm put Manly to the sword. Johnny Ray may take on the Storm once again but if I stick with them I'll get it right eventually. And Billy Slater needs a breakout game against a quality opponent if he wants to keep his Queensland jersey.

Verdict – Storm

Result - Storm 10 drew with Sea Eagles 10

very nervous this round, quite a few toss ups...especially the way some of the teams have been palying (storm)..

Guru Craig's picture

Brisbane - As I'm writing this Justin Hodges is being ruled out due to a cracked rib. There's no confirmation yet on where the injury was suffered, against Para or... inside word suggests an angry Punter named 'Rob' was seen in the car park after the game throwing uppercuts near the Bris team bus. Even so, my NRL Brain cortex wont let me get past the home side... you've been warned though, I'm a Bronco's tragic.

Souths - Coach Harry has sat down the Thinker's good mate 'Benchy' and is looking forward to the postcard Beau Ryan promised to send from Disney land, word has it he's still there.
Potter has hopes of inspiring the former Face of the Game to past greatness but I cant help feeling a simple hug might suffice. Rabbits by a MILLION

Dragons - I was wrong but I was right... another simple field goal...and now that makes three losses from a drop-kick..but alas the Guru had the Dragons at the line of +5.5 and all was not lost. I'm counting on the Saints secret weapon Josh ' Pineapple Express' Dugan not to fall off the dang roof and get them the 2 by more than 1.

Panthers - Can the 2bit penny giant killers repeat their feats of strength for a second week running? The Guru says they can. Both these sides are hard to tip so watch this one with caution. Penrith lifted above the clouds last week to quash the 2013 premiers. I don't think they will be as good this week, but still just good enough to beat the men from across the pond.

Cowboys - The little voices are telling me the Cows are due, but beware those same bastards had me on the Storm as specials last week. I've not got a good argument as to why I think the Cowboys will get this, other than I think they played quite well in a dignified loss to the carrot eaters.

Raiders - Another tricky one possibly? Canberra have too many points in them to lose this and after I tipped the Sharks to solider-on last week, among there many woes the news published that email..how will the boys react? Dismally if the recent past is anything to go by. Can 13+

Bulldogs - I've just got a hot tip from Andrew 'Joey' Johns, word is the Knights are 'OFF', when I called Joey to confirm all he had to say was...I cannot be certain of what I said ... then some unintelligible grunts about water and Gai's followed by loud neighs. odd. Stick with the Shitzu's.

Melbourne - As a good Queenslander I don't enjoy writing the word 'Melbourne". There are only a few excusable ways to use that word in my house, one when mentioning the F1 Grand Prix or another, talking about the Storm and their trio of supermen who dress in Maroon 3 times a year. The Storm are due.

Good to see your Broncos hoodoo is broken Thinker. Pity you didn't pick them. They never looked in doubt

Another Friday double for the Guru...and i welcome all Tigers supporters to the '50' club.

My super Saturday tips are the Dragons and Panthers as a 2 way multi. I fancy the Cowboys to sneak home as well but that game is a contentious betting prospect so bet with your head, could go either way.

Oh man. Thinker have you got your Thinking cap on . I followed you on the Titians against my feelings. But I couldnt on the raiders. Thank God.

Johnny Ray...how you travelling after Saturday night?

Johnny Ray's picture

After Saturday I had three out of five, after Sunday, three out of seven ! Crap ! Against all better judgement and this is just what this is from me because according to stats, the big three have never lost two consecutive games in row at home, I have taken Sea Eagles to beat Melbourne Storm tonight, just so I can break even this week in my picks ! I know people still say they're on fire but I still think they're burnt out ... :-S

Steel Panther's picture

Mate...I meant after the Warriors game??

Johnny Ray's picture

Ah, yeah, that ! Dude, like alot of Warriors supporters I am still in denial about the whole thing ! We can all blame the coaches, captain and players but where the blame really lies is with club and club management ! The way I see it there's a culture of failure happening within in Warriors and that's what I feel we need to change first if we want to get back to winning games ! Go Warriors ! :-(
