Round eleven selections

Wests Tigers vs North Queensland Cowboys – Friday night – Leichhardt Oval

We had some big scores last weekend and I noticed a trend emerging. Then I went back over the entire season and the trend remained so I thought it was worth mentioning here. In 2013 there have been 21 games where a team has won by 24 or more points. In 19 of those games the home side won. The two exceptions prove the rule; one game was played at a neutral venue (Tigers vs Sharks at Allianz) and in the other the Titans lost about one quarter of their roster to injury in their loss to the Knights. Those of you that like to play the handicaps and the margin betting may want to slot that away in the memory bank for future reference. I'm not here to tell you the Cowboys won't win on Friday night, but I'm absolutely terrified of this game. The Cowboys are consistent underperformers in Sydney town, and they haven't beaten the Tigers in the harbour city since 2006. This is also that time of year when it's worth looking at the weather before you put your tips in, and the forecast for Sydney is 'horrible with scattered patches of fricken unbelievable'. We're going to have a wet track on Friday night, 20-30 knot southerlies and a temperature hovering in the low teens. I can't pick the Tigers on form against anyone and I certainly can't tip them against the Cowboys - a competitive loss to the Rabbitohs and a narrow loss to the Roosters is lengths better than what the Tigers are dishing out at the moment. But boy oh boy that weather worries me. Cowboys by 1-6 in what could be an ugly game.

Verdict – Cowboys

Result - Tigers 22 defeated Cowboys 20

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

The same dismal conditions confront these sides but it hasn't exactly been balmy in Brisbane of late so the northerners should have adapted by now. The Broncos were most impressive against the Titans last week, but they picked up a couple more injuries last week with Jack Reed and David Stagg unavailable. Justin Hodges returns in the centres and a cold wet night will certainly test his hamstrings - let's see if he can get through this one. The Bulldogs were dog-ordinary last week and Krisnan Inu twisted his way to another suspension but I'm giving them another chance. Much of this game will be played in the middle third of the park and the Bulldogs have some advantage there. I can't imagine The Guru and The King will be with me but I'll take the home side in another low-scoring contest.

Verdict – Bulldogs

Result - Bulldogs 24 defeated Broncos 14

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday night – WIN Jubilee Oval

The last time the Raiders sacked a player for disciplinary reasons (Todd Carney) he repaid them by taking the Roosters to the grand final and picking up a Dally M medal. I can't see Josh Dugan winning a Dally M and I can't see the Dragons making the grand final, but his debut in the Red V was more than handy as he picked up a brace of tries and gave St George some much needed spark in attack. I can't quite get a handle on the Panthers form at the moment but they've won three of their last four and they look tremendous. Perhaps Ivan Cleary is as good a coach as Phil Gould thinks he is - the Warriors haven't been quite the same since he left. One thing to note is that Penrith haven't won a game away from home this season, and for that reason alone I'm taking the home side here.

Verdict – Dragons

Result - Panthers 19 defeated Dragons 0

Sydney Roosters vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday night – Allianz Stadium

I've been putting together these footy tips for a while, and I doubt I've ever said what I'm about to say right now. The Storm can't win this game. They back up from a brutal (and long) Monday night fixture, they travel to Sydney and they face a team that keep on winning. I can hardly believe myself, but the Roosters are good things. I think I'm getting clucky.

Verdict – Roosters

Result - Storm 26 defeated Roosters 18

Manly Sea Eagles vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – Brookvale Oval

The Sea Eagles face the same quick back-up as the Storm but at least they get to do so at home, and they do so against a team that have won just one game away from Canberra this season. I'll take the Sea Eagles at fortress Brookvale but I wouldn't be taking any silly odds about them. In fact, if you want a bet I'd be looking at one of those Sea Eagles winning at half time/Raiders winning at full time combo dealies (currently paying $9.00 or thereabouts). If the Raiders are close enough with 30 minutes to go I can see them running over the top of some tired Sea Eagles late in the game. In any case I'm tipping the home side, but I wouldn't be turning off the TV at half-time if I were you. Dangerous.

Verdict – Sea Eagles

Result - Sea Eagles 16 defeated Raiders 10

Parramatta Eels vs Gold Coast Titans – Sunday afternoon – Mudgee Stadium

I thinks it's tremendous that this game is at Mudgee, and I think it's even more tremendous that Mudgee has a stadium. These sides met not so long ago and you may recall that this is the game that cost Ricky Stuary $10,000 when he was somewhat disappointed with the men in pink. The time for revenge is now and I expect the Eels to have most of the crowd behind them on Sunday afternoon. It might not look like it, but this could turn out to be the game of the round. The in-form Jarryd Hayne and the right foot of Chris Sandow to get the Eels home.

Verdict – Eels

Result - Titans 42 defeated Eels 4

New Zealand Warriors vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

The Warriors were well and truly spanked by Penrith but it's uncanny how many teams turn it all around in the space of a week. They'll be pleased to be back home and their record in New Zealand (two wins from five) isn't as bad as it reads. Those three losses were narrow and against quality opponents (Roosters, Rabbits, Bulldogs) and two of those losses weren't at Mt Smart. As much as I expect a better performance I'm not expecting a winning performance. The Knights by 1-6 points looks about right to me.

Verdict – Knights

Result - Warriors 28 defeated Knights 12

Cronulla Sharks vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Monday night – Sharks Stadium

The Sharks haven't lost a game since Wade Graham turned up at ASADA headquarters and refused to participate in an art class. That may be just a coincidence but they do seem to have their minds on the job at the moment, and Paul Gallen returns to remind the NSW selectors he'll be ready for the Origin series. The Sharks seem to know how to rattle the Rabbitohs and they have a handy head-to-head record in recent times. But for all that I can't tip against the Bunnies. This will be a tight contest for much of the match until Greg Inglis lights the after-burners. I'm not here to paint you a picture but I'll give you a quick sketch - Rabbitohs 16, Inglis 8, Sharks 8.

Verdict – Rabbitohs

Result - Sharks 14 defeated Rabbitohs 12

Hi Thinker. Can't disagree again this week, although would love to see the Broncos get up against a still unconvincing Bulldogs. What about that Dave Taylor? Must be the only Queenslander to get off (so to speak) at the judiciary in the last 250 years!

Yayness ! Thank you Thinker ! I totally agree with you again on most of your tips but I've got to say it to you, I can't see Roosters beating Storm because to do that means them putting in the same defensive effort as Sea Eagles did on Monday ! I'm sorry but I can't see them doing it ! I also think Sharks will beat Rabbitohs just because it's Monday Night Game and if there is going to be upset it's always going to be on Monday Night Games. Look at what happen this week ! A draw ! Dude ! That and cool, I can't agree with you on Knights game being close one this weekend. In New Zealand it is Joker appreciation day on Sunday. Dress up as Mt Smart Joker and come down and watch a joke ! All I can see is another ten, twenty point blowout in second half against The Warriors. My tips for this round are : Cowboys, Bulldogs, Dragons, Storm, Sea Eagles, Eels, Sharks, Knights. Go The Warriors ! :-(

Cowboys – This game is ripe for an upset with plenty of QLDs finest thinking about next month, wishing they were on a sunny beach sipping a XXXX instead of rolling around on a cold wet patch of suburban Sydney grass. The NQC have been losing games though still playing decent football. I expect the Tigers to make a better show of it but I can’t see them being good enough, if Townsville can weather the first 20mins they’ll get the money.

Brisbane – I don’t know if I’m worthy to be mentioned ahead of ‘The King’ let alone in the same sentence, but your right Boss, I can’t go past the Bronco’s here. Brisbane will have Hodges back and I’ve got faith they will sneak this. I’m sure Wal wouldn't remember… but long ago the Guru was at a coaching camp for promising juniors and put a step on the great man to score in the corner and seal the win for the mighty shirt-offs in a game of tag, some of the biggest names in QLD RL history were there that day to witness the magnificent victory…Langer, Renouf, Carne, Hanckock, Gillmister, Big Lazo..I doubt the Broncos can top that this week but I’m hopeful of a victory.

St George - Officials are locked in tight negotiations in an attempt to fulfil a rather odd clause in the contract of their latest star signing…rumour has it, when the player signed he
requested a clause that stated ‘if he was to score 2 tries on debut’ he would receive a signing bonus in the form of a giant ‘Pineapple’ the Big Pineapple from QLD specifically. Word from inside Pineapple headquarters is that QLD Premier Campbell Newman is causing delays, he is outraged that a piece of QLD history could be sold interstate, only he’s allowed to sell off QLD….
Dragons to beat the Panthers by a couple.

Sydney – In my opinion the Chooks are the top team at the moment, Souths may like to argue the fact and just about everyone wants to see that argument, but as it stands the Roosters are playing consistently good, they are finding ways to win the tight games, like NQ and Brisbane. Winning those games is the difference between Parramatta going none for seven in golden point a few seasons ago and Parramatta now. Maybe it’s not quite that dramatic but it bears thought, what if…
Melbourne have lost the spark for now, they are just playing like a well drilled first grade squad, the magic isn’t happening. Roosters 1-12

Canberra – Blake Ferguson is going well and looks set to make his debut for the Blues on the wing, given the confidence that provides look for him to have a big game. I’ve got a feeling about this game, I’m not hugely confident H2H but I like Canberra with a few pts start. Raiders @ the line if you’re having a punt.

Parramatta – The Eels are taking the show on the road this round and the good people of Mudgee should get to see a blue and gold victory. Parra really need to perform and with the money the club is spending here, they will.

Warriors – I’m having a punt with this tip, NZ have to make a statement after last week and The Knights are too up and down to give me enough confidence. Good value at the line if you think THE NZW are a chance.

Souths - Cronulla will make the Bunnies earn this victory and I expect it to be a tough contest, but Souths are just too good. Greg Inglis is a freak and I’m with the boss here. Gallen’s return will benefit the home side, but how will Carney take missing a Blue jumper?

The new guy's picture

I'm thinking the Tigers are due, NQ form away from home is average, Broncos to win by 4 with Hodges scoring the match winner, plus Warriors to find a way to win at home. Knights are harder to pick than a broken nose...

Have a great weekend everyone.

Johnny Ray.. you went against warriors again! tsk tsk.
LATE MAIL: Sharks.

The Thinker's picture

Sheesh! Results this round are looking uglier than a portaloo at a B&S Ball.

Nice work Joker....glad to see someone finding some winners.

Guru Craig's picture

I got one, i got one...

not hard to better the celebrities

Johnny Ray's picture

Yeah don't do it to me Joker ! But I will just say this about The Warriors, finally we get some luck with injuries as it's all because Of Akuila Uate and Darius Boyd hurting themselves in the second half that that sent the game's momentum back to us and help us win the thing ! Still saying that I don't want you to think that I like to see anybody in any pain so my thoughts and prayers do go out to them ! Hope they both get better soon ! That and for anybody else out there that's hurting over this weeks results, do what Joker says and take Cronulla to win over South ! I'm feeling really confident about this one ! It's ridiculous ! Go Sharkies ! ;-D

Rob's picture

NRL oh NRL... there is just no pattern whatsoever.. and as thinker and myself realised the hard way last week, "no sure thing". imagine a team losing by 50 last week beating the cowboys.. a lot of people are backing the Sharkies for tommorow because of the current trend, but im telling you all, it is the most dangerous bet of the round. it is literally 50-50.

Guru Craig's picture

Pooch, Us celebrity's are so busy, what with the rock star life and turning down offers to be on 'Celebrity Apprentice' that we're sometimes off by a few pts...i don't think i could have tipped worse if i'd tried though!

Steel Panther's picture

And to think Guru Craig the only one you got right was probably the last game most tipsters would have picked. Even Johnny Ray didn't pick them!!

Lady Di's picture

What a complete Lady Di-saster of a tipping weekend! Only 1 right ....
heads off muttering to himself...

Guru Craig's picture

We'll come good, that's my first bad weekend in a couple of years.

Brett's picture

I still have heaps of faith in backing the tips from The Thinker,Wally & Guru Craig.

Lady Di's picture

Aye... I'll keep the faith with youse lot coz in fairness youse know a heaps lot more aboot it than me!
And.... I nearly dropped the Bunnies for the Sharks.... had a premonition... wish I'd had one about that tunnel!
