Melbourne Storm vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – AAMI Park
It is something of a shame this game is in Melbourne, if only because the Broncos at Suncorp would give this a huge shake. Their narrow loss to the Warriors was as impressive as narrow losses go and it's quite clear that, at their best, they are a finals football team. Getting there isn't getting any easier, and backing up from a trip to New Zealand (a few days after an Origin game) with a trip to Melbourne is a hard way to earn two points. Cameron Smith returns and I don't need to tell you how important he is to everything the Storm do in attack. The Broncos won't lose any admirers, but the Storm will get the points.
Verdict – Storm
Result - Storm 32 defeated Broncos 0
Cronulla Sharks vs Wests Tigers – Friday night – Sharks Stadium
I keep on tipping against the Tigers and they keep on proving me wrong, and I'm giving them yet another opportunity to prove me wrong again. The Sharks be without captain Paul Gallen but they have a tremendous pack of forwards with or without him. Former Tigers Andrew Fifita, Chris Heighington and Bryce Gibbs will be keen to show their old club what they let go, and Beau Ryan hopes to pass a fitness test as well. Luke Lewis shifting to the centres for this game shores up my confidence. Injuries this season have forced the Tigers to test some emerging talent. There's been a few shining lights but none brighter than Tim Simona - let's hope we're all talking about him in five years time. What do the Tigers have to do for me to tip them? Their record against the Sharks is pretty darn good. Meh!
Verdict – Sharks
Result - Sharks 36 defeated Tigers 22
St George Illawarra Dragons vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – WIN Jubilee Oval
There are no good things in the NRL, but the Roosters look an awful lot like it. They've lost just one away game all season (in Canberra) and they've won their last two matches against strong opponents with Sonny Bill Williams playing at halfback. James Maloney returns and his goal-kicking, kicking in play and composure adds to their (near) invincibility. Josh Dugan has accepted a one-match ban for something that looked a little like a shoulder charge. No doubt he'll spend his free time climbing scaffolding or lawn fishing as he prepares for Origin game three in his uniquely Dugan-esque way. For the life of me I can't see how the Dragons can score many points on Saturday night, and they sure as heck can't score more than the Roosters will. I've done the Maths based on those assumptions. Chooks by 20.
Verdict – Roosters
Result - Roosters 36 defeated Dragons 0
Gold Coast Titans vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday night – TIO Stadium (Darwin)
Just the second NRL game to be played at TIO Stadium (for the trivia buffs - the first was between the Cowboys and the Roosters in 2012). The Titans were never in the hunt last weekend and I'm sure that Panthers coach Ivan Cleary noticed the Knights targeting the Titans on the left edge once Jamal Idris did that rather hideous thing to his leg (seriously Jamal - when you dislocate your ankle and fracture your leg you don't have to get up and walk off the field - those medicabs are there for a reason). The Titans have an imposing pack of forwards but those injuries to Idris and Zillman leave that Titans backline looking a little fragile to my eye. Expect a big game from Panthers man mountain Tim Grant - he's returning from injury and will be hoping to make an impression on Laurie Daley before teams are named for the deciding game of the Origin series. An upset result...of sorts.
Verdict – Panthers
Result - Panthers 40 defeated Titans 18
Canberra Raiders vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon – Canberra Stadium
This is the game that had me thinkering for the longest this round. The Cowboys recent record against the Raiders is worth noting, and it even includes two pretty convincing wins in Canberra. Their recent form is on the improve and an in-form Jonathan Thurston is reason enough to give them a hope. I've played it safe and gone with the home team for three reasons:
- The Raiders are undefeated at home this season
- The forecast maximum for Canberra on Saturday is a rather chilly ten degrees (ten degrees in Canberra feels like half that)
- The Cowboys only wins away from home this season have been against lessor opponents than the Raiders.
Those three reasons aren't enough to give me confidence, but I'll take the Raiders in what should be an entertaining game of football.
Verdict – Raiders
Result - Raiders 25 defeated Cowboys 18
Canterbury Bulldogs vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – Mackay Stadium
The last time the Bulldogs took a home game to Mackay they knocked off the Melbourne Storm - the team that went on to beat them in the 2012 grand final. Hometown hero Ben Barba started what may be the longest try in the history of the NRL (109 metres - can't get much longer). The Bulldogs are heading back to the banks of the mighty Pioneer River and I'm sure the Queensland-based clubs were interested to hear that Ben Barba would like to return to Queensland on a more permanent basis. The Knights were tremendous last week and they were tremendous in round ten when they beat the Bulldogs by 36 points. In between those two games the Knights haven't beaten anybody, and it's that inconsistency that has me reluctant to tip them here. After about ten minutes we'll know if we're watching the good Knights or the bad Knights. Without the benefit of hindsight I'll tip the bad Knights. Another good game for the people of Mackay - although I doubt they're getting a grand final preview this year.
Verdict – Bulldogs
Result - Knights 18 defeated Bulldogs 12
South Sydney Rabbitohs vs New Zealand Warriors – Sunday afternoon – NIB Stadium (Perth)
If you're going to give up your home ground advantage to take a game to Perth it does make sense to select an opponent who is more disadvantaged by the travel than you are. The Warriors flight to Perth departed just after the completion of round eight last year which should see them landing in Perth about ten minutes before kick-off. They might be on the road trip from hell but you can't ignore the form of the Warriors at the moment. Their narrow win over the Broncos was football of the highest quality and that makes for five wins in a row against some very handy opposition. They've won four of the last six clashes with the Rabbits and when they have lost they haven't lost by much (they went down by just two points in round five). I'm sticking solid with my superhero-sponsored Bunnies - they don't let me down too often and all those ex-pats Poms in Perth will be cheering for the Burgess brothers. Bunnies...just...in what could prove to be one of the games of the season.
Verdict – Rabbitohs
Result - Rabbitohs 30 defeated Warriors 13
Manly Sea Eagles vs Parramatta Eels – Monday night – Brookvale Oval
David 'Wolfman' Williams and Andrew 'Joey' Johns late on a Monday night in Kings Cross - what could possibly go wrong? Mind you, I was in Kings Cross last weekend with Ms Thinker and we found it all rather tame and delightful. Had a nice dinner, went for a late walk, no queues for a cab, all the women I saw had clothes on - it was all rather pleasant really. Maybe we were in the wrong street. Anyway I decided to talk about my social life here because, quite frankly, I can't think of a single interesting thing to say about this game. Monday night football used to spring an upset from time to time, but not this Monday night.
Verdict – Sea Eagles
Result - Sea Eagles 50 defeated Eels 10
Wally Lewis - round seventeen selections (in bold)
Note: tips from Wally will be published on Thursday night or early Friday morning.
- STORM vs Broncos
- SHARKS vs Tigers
- Dragons vs ROOSTERS
- Titans vs PANTHERS
- RAIDERS vs Cowboys
- BULLDOGS vs Knights
- RABBITOHS vs Warriors
- SEA EAGLES vs Eels

Phew! The tips are in! I was worried I'd have to make my tips based on my own recognisance (wrong word I know, just sounds right to say it!).
I'm going to have to go against you on the WTG (thanks Guru Craig) as I think they've got something going right now.
The Bros ... hmmmm ... gotta tip them based on recent form methinks. Cheers again for all the hard work.
Heads off to a Whopper... mmmmm

Melbourne - Billy ‘Greenlight’ Slater’s refusal to deny allegations that he is a grub, seems just as good as a signed confession to some, a prominent NSW journalist has taken it upon himself to turn myth into fact. When will you Cockroaches learn...Now on to the game, The Bronco’s are on the ropes, the top 8 is a long way off and they can't afford to lose many more games this year, Griffins boys will bring their A game and give their best, the problem is their best won't be quite good enough. Melbourne too, need to win, they have dropped away from the top sides and know this is an important game. I expect Brisbane to fall short by 8 or so. Brisbane at the line or Mel 1-12
Sharks - Its a good week in the Shire,The Sharkies have come across a bit of extra coin by lending their stadium out to some type of waste disposal company, lets hope they don't smell too bad because the Guru fancies the home side who are still Grubless by all accounts but should be able to put a stop to the Tigers resurgence, Cronulla are disciplined and defensive, they held NQ for longer than most expected and will be too good for the Cats. Sharks 1-12
Roosters - Sydney will be Sonny for another year at least with SBW resigning for 2014, according to the same NSW paper's ‘exclusive interview’...which is odd, because apparently Sonny has also denied making a decision for next year to another paper...NSW media pay attention, just because you say it, does not make it true...ala QLD and Origin and Billy and Nate miles etc etc. The Roosters are far too good at the moment to lose to a struggling Dragons, The Big Pineapple is out and the Guru’s mate looks to be auditioning for a second career in soccer, if his antics last week can be relied upon..lol love your work mate. Sydney City Sonnies by 13+
Panthers - The Guru is a bit of a fan of Albert Kelly and Aidan Sezer, The GCT are a reasonable side at the moment and i think the home ground advantage would have made the difference in this one. The Panthers have impressed the G so far this season but im looking at this game with a bit of caution, Being in Darwin there is no home side, only the unknown and taking that into account im backing the Pennies, because of their structure and enthusiasm, two things the Titans had none of last week, bet they wish they were at home. Panthers -3.5
Raiders - Another game where the home ground advantage plays such a big part and if this game were in NQ i'd be on the Cows. Canberra are probably a better side than the Cowboys in 2013 but disappointing as it is to say, its true. Townsville haven't come close to hitting their sweet spot and this deep into the season it's doubtful they will, JT is giving his all and a few of the others are starting to show signs of wanting to play footy but its not enough. I like Henry, i do, but its time for the club to look in a fresh direction, they've had the same structure now for a long time and its proven to be a couple of games short of where it needs to be, small little things creep in and poison the stew and when the guys need to dig deep in the final few of games, there just isn't anything there.
Bulldogs - Newcastle played some footy last week, they were actually very good and Wayne would be hoping they can carry enough of that into this game to get an upset. Wishful thinking aside the Dogs are a class ahead of the Knights right now and they will show that by winning this comfortably. Newcastle have enough trouble playing away from home and as this game is in McKay i give them little chance, the Barber fan club will be out in force and i fancy this game as a bit of a lock.
Souths - This game could be interesting, Souths can't win forever and New Zealand aren't that good..no one has bothered to tell either side this and if they have, they didn't listen because both teams have big aggressive packs that are hungry for wins. The NZW have over achieved after being belted by Penrith and they haven't tasted defeat for several weeks. Weigh that against the Bunnies who must be almost as confident as the Superman logo they wore last week. Three Burgess boys will feature in this game and Sam should be looking to show his little brothers how its done.
Manly - Manly need to win this game, thats a fact. Ricky does too, but he knows he won't.
On their best day the Eels would struggle to get a win at Brookie and they aren't exactly at their best right now, injuries and off field dramas added to the fact their roster isn't up to standard make this a no brainer, unless...you hear bookies crowing about a 4 figure wager on Para before the game, go with the flow because the fix is in, Happend last year!
Submitted by The Thinker on
Well how about that? Eight games and the Guru, the King and the Thinker have identical tips.
I don't believe that's happened before.....it's a perfect storm!!!
Submitted by Johnny Ray on
Yeah and cool man then have to come in and break that perfect streak ! Sorry Thinker, Sorry King, Sorry Guru ! But here are my all tips for this round of footy and not all of them are the same as you guys ...
Storm - Storm will win this game in what will be more of season defining loss for Broncos as I really do feel sorry for them. They should of won last week and if it wasn't for Origin already having done Sam Thaiday in he would of tackled " The Tonga-nator " Konrad Hurrell on halfway mark and they would gone on to win the game. There won't be any moments like that for them in this game. I'm sorry but Melbourne Storm all the way ...
Tigers - Sharks have terrible record when playing up against Tigers according to this week bible. That and when you factor in that they will be lifting from there god awesome performance against out of sorts Storm last week I feel will be enough for them to get over the line in this game ! The West Tigers, just ...
Roosters - Again Roosters also have almost Adele like, terrible record against Dragons, but this is game where everything starts to change ! Roosters by Adele like huge margin ...
Panthers - Titans have way too many injuries and Panthers are playing with just way too much confidence ! Though Titans are one of my other teams along with Auckland Vulcans and Canberra Raiders, I can't see them dude winning this game ....
Cowboys - Raiders are beginning to struggle and Cowboys are beginning to come out of them slide playing with some impressive football skills that we haven't seen from them since forever ago ! The Cowboys to win, but only just ...
Bulldogs - Ben Barba is playing again in front of his home ground and all his friends and family. I know I shouldn't think that one man can make all difference in team but then not every team can claim to have man and footballer like Ben Barba playing for them. Bulldogs but don't think Knights won't make things competitive for them ...
Warriors - The upset of the round, paying something like $3.50 to win which is like $10 in last year money ! Get on it, that's how super awesomely confident I am that they will win this game because this sure will be game of the round ...
Sea Eagles - A kid is talking to his parents divorce lawyer and the lawyer as gently as she can is trying to find out from kid who it is that she would want to live with from now on ! Do you want to live Dad she asks her ? No, I don't want live with my Dad he beats me ! Stunned and taken back by this, the lawyer then asks the kid, do you want to live with Mum then ? No, I don't want to live with my Mum because she beats me ! Ok what about your grandparents then ? No they beat me too ! Well then who do you want to live with ? Paramatta Eels ! Paramatta Eels ? Yeah ! They don't beat anybody ! ;-D
Gone The Warriors ! ;-D

The Joker has played a joke.... by tipping the same except the North Queensland Cowboys to take out the raiders at home.... Note: Thinker you tipped these boys to win the comp.. I think you should have gone with your gut here. Guru: Raiders you think may be the better side in 2013, but i say the first half of 2013.. Cowboys are one side who can really pressure the Raiders.. Thurston to have a blinder in this game closely followed by Tate! Cowboys by 2......Happy tipping!! :-))

ooooh Johnny.. your tempting me with the tigers.. I have tipped their wins the last two... can they make it 3??!?!

Greetings Lads, Ive been following the thinkers and co's tips for quite some time now and feel I have a duty to give my 2 cents worth.
Little bit about me... I follow the sharks and I like boobs.
Yep.
I want you people to understand that the above statement is not a admission of me being a poor punter. Rather, I have nothing else to do but watch porn and the footy. This means (to me anyway) that I could be fairly confident with my tips every week so lets get started
Chooks v Dragons: Dragons 30+
Submitted by I like boobs on
That was of course my little joke. Here are my real tips...
Mel 6+ Value however on Broncs imo @3.65. Broncs were solid last week against a red hot warriors side so worth a punt
Cro 8+ Sharks to bounce back in a really good way this week after losing to the cowboys. Since I follow the sharks (I suffer from Longterm depression) I can honestly say that sharks play better without Gallen (err oops... I mean "The grub" Mr Guru ). He is too predictable and without him my beloved Sharks play more creative. This is very important. Oh I totally agree with your name calling btw sir :)
Chooks 18+ This could be a thrashing. Chooks are bloody good. I would know since im depressed and eat at KFC alot
Panthers 8+ I can't understand the poor odds on the Cavemen week in week out. They are a bloody good footy side and the Titans are without that monster man Idris. Easy tip for me. Got them @2.40. Yummy
Canberra 1+ Toughest of the round. Leaning on the Raiders due to it being in the Capital. My money however is on NQ@2.45. Value
Newcastle. Yikes everyone here shows no love to the knights. Fair enough. However I think Mr Bennett still has some gas in the belly. He should, he's getting pretty old now. Nah total respect to him still. He's a magician with a decimated knights outfit. The thing is half his squad has overcome injury and i sense a finals team brewing. The Titans game raised my singed eyebrows big time.
Rabbits by 2 points. Value on Warriors @3.50! Value town anyone???
manly 22+ I don't like sticky dicky. I mean Ricky. Yeah that's him. He doesn't know how to coach in modern times imo. You can tell that by him crying and making excuses after every game he loses.
Gamble unresponsibly

Morning all. This week I'm staying with the big 3, Thinker, Wally and Guru. The only possible other results would be a win by all 3 Queensland teams but I don't think that will happen. Great comments one and all, even a joke from Johnnyray. Ya gotta feel a little sorry for the Eels.
