Penrith Panthers vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – Centrebet Stadium
A real test for the Broncos this week - away from home against a side that has to win to be any hope of sneaking into the top eight. It's hard to get a read on the Panthers unexpected win over the Warriors in New Zealand, but if nothing else it will certainly boost their confidence. It's not a confidence I share, and I haven't had confidence in the Panthers since Nigel Plum succumbed to injury. Their backrow looks like a weak link to my eye, and here they come up against a State of Origin backrow in Parker, Gillett and Thaiday. With that advantage I see the Broncos winning the yardage battle - and Josh Hoffman chiming in from the back doesn't hurt in that all-important battle for field position. The Broncos aren't going to blow anyone off the paddock, but they are a professional outfit and I expect them to prevail again. Put your hard-earned on Jumping Jack Reed as a tryscorer for the visitors - if you're into that sort of thing.
Verdict – Broncos by 1-12
Result - Panthers 28 defeated Broncos 12
Canterbury Bulldogs vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – ANZ Stadium
Most of us expected the Bunnies to return to premiership form before the finals - it's just that many of us didn't expect to see it last week. That was an impressive win over the Sea Eagles, and when the Rabbitohs are playing well it's in your interests to take notice. Traditionally the Rabbitohs struggle against those big Bulldogs forwards packs, but all those Burgess brothers have put an end to that. I don't think the Dogs can run through the Bunnies, I don't think they can run around the Bunnies, and I don't think the Bulldogs playmakers have the kicking game to outsmart the Bunnies. I guess that leaves me no choice but to tip the Bunnies. Stick your eyeballs in front of this one if you can. It should be a cracking game in front of a bumper crowd.
Verdict – Rabbitohs
Result - Rabbitohs 28 defeated Bulldogs 20
St George Illawarra Dragons vs Wests Tigers – Saturday afternoon – Sydney Cricket Ground
Rugby league returns to the SCG, and fans of the defending AFL premiers, the Sydney Swans, get to see what a real football team looks like when the 14th-placed Dragons take on the 15th-placed Tigers. I can't tell you know excited I am about this game...I honestly can't. Picking a winner here is like arguing over which Police Academy sequel was the best. I'm going with St George 'Assignment Miami Beach' Illawarra over Wests 'Mission to Moscow' Tigers in a game that is sure to create plenty of Oscar buzz.
Verdict – Dragons
Result - Tigers 34 defeated Dragons 18
Gold Coast Titans vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday night – Skilled Park
The Warriors have been knocking over the Titans for an eternity and they'll be well supported on Saturday night. But if the Warriors season is over (and it looks like it is) I just wonder if their minds will be focussed on football. It's cold in Auckland. They're away from home. They're on the Gold Coast and the sun is shining. It's a hunch, but I'm keen on the Titans this weekend. Albert Kelly is back. Matt Srama is back. They've got one of the best forward packs in the business and some big boppers on the bench to keep those Warriors on their heels. I'm keen at $1.90.
Verdict – Titans
Result - Warriors 24 defeated Titans 22
North Queensland Cowboys vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium
About three weeks ago I suggested, somewhat outrageously, that the Cowboys could still make the top eight. They haven't lost since, but this could be the night where it all comes undone. The Cowboys are a very firm favourite and deservedly so, but I can't forget the absolute mauling the Knights gave the Cowboys way back in round three. I like the look of the Knights interchange and this is one team with enough wise heads, on and off the field, to pick up a surprise win on the road. If you're winning your tipping competition you probably want to stick with the Cowboys, but if you're looking for an upset this weekend you could do a lot worse than the Novacastrians. Tonights the Knights.
Verdict – Knights
Result - Cowboys 26 defeated Knights 6
Canberra Raiders vs Manly Sea Eagles – Sunday afternoon – Canberra Stadium
I can think of two pretty reasonable reasons why the Raiders could win this game. First and foremost, they've given their long-suffering coach David Furner the heave-ho this week, and we've all seem teams improve on the back of such action. Secondly, the last time the Sea Eagles travelled to Canberra for a game of football was way back in 2008. Two reasons isn't quite enough for me. The lads from Manly will dig in for coach Geoff Toovey, who copped a $10,000 fine for criticising the referees - something he used to do on the field in every minute of every game he played. Manly couldn't get the points last week, but a competitive loss to the Bunnies reads like okay form to me.
Verdict – Sea Eagles
Result - Sea Eagles 36 defeated Raiders 22
Melbourne Storm vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – AAMI Park
Parramatta, without Jarryd Hayne, have to travel to Melbourne to play the Storm on a Sunday afternoon. This game is more than enough reason to support the introduction of euthanasia laws in this country.
Verdict – Storm by 50 (Cameron Smith and Billy Slater to be rested at the 60 minute mark)
Result - Storm 64 defeated Eels 4
Cronulla Sharks vs Sydney Roosters – Monday night – Remondis Stadium
I really want to talk about Paul Gallen, but I also really don't want to be sued. So I'll keep it short and sweet. When his playing days are over I would prefer to remember Paul Gallen as a darn good footballer, but it's becoming more and more likely that I will remember his as a cheat. As for the football, these sides met just five weeks ago and the Roosters won 40-0. The Chooks are going as well now as they were then, while the Sharks appear to be teetering. They had their fare share of luck against the Knights but still lost, and they needed plenty of luck to beat the Dragons in the final moments last weekend. All the luck in the world won't help the Sharks on Monday night.
Verdict – Roosters
Result - Sharks 32 defeated Roosters 22
Wally Lewis - round twenty-four selections (in bold)
Note: tips from Wally will be published on Thursday night or early Friday morning.
- Panthers vs BRONCOS
- RABBITOHS vs Bulldogs
- DRAGONS vs Tigers

Greetings football fans,
For those of you that might be (remotely) interested in politics, The Thinker was kindly asked to offer a preview of the upcoming federal election.
My take on it all, as seen through the eyes of a football fan, can be read here:

All the best

Brisbane - The Guru wonders how ‘Kevin Sept-7 Rudd’ felt about Tony Abbott getting cozy with The Bronco’s today..at least he didn't get a ‘selfie’ with Sam. That would've just been mean - that’s enough Guru politics, I don’t want The Boss to think I’m moving in on his new gig. Congrats on the write up mate, its a great read. Football wise, Brisbane should be too strong here. The new additions to the team are providing more attacking opportunities and their average points scored per game is increasing. Penrith will be hard to beat if they turn up, The Guru will be wagering they won't, well not for more than 30 mins anyway, last week was about defending their honour. Ivan’s mountain men had plenty of time to flip through holiday brochures on the plane trip home and i suspect more than a few significant others are already packed for disneyland.
Rabbitohs - After a ripper of a game last week, The Guru is backing the Bunnies. Squirrely Sam Boyle is still on the sidelines but last week the other Burgess boys impressed and i can't see any reason to doubt they won't repeat that here.. Big G.I.looks like he’s getting warmed up for a serious run at the finals and The Guru expects Inglis to start injecting himself more into every game. The Doggies will struggle to hold the big Qlder and Souths should close the game out nicely.
Dragons - St George are a proud club, they might not be going too well at present but there is some significance to this game, the historical value is questionable and the attendance will be interesting, but that one little fact above used wisely by a clever coach is motivation for a side with no reason to bleed for their colours anymore this year. The Dragons have been the better side this season in the eyes of The Guru, the questionable games involving either of these 2 sides always comes back to the fact that St Merge will atleast give it a decent go and are worth considering when putting in the tip sheet. The Tigers aren't.
Titans - Cartwright is doing a fine job of keeping his name on the best car park at skilled stadium. The Coast have enjoyed a decent run form wise, due in part to superb performances from their halves pairing in Kelly and Sezer, both playing this week. The home ground advantage is worth something here and The Guru feels the Titans have more reasons to win this after their recent fiascos, second only to their coastal rivals Cronulla...i'll get onto that mess later. Coast H2H is the safe option but be careful.

NQC - The Cowboys will need the advantage they are getting with this game being in Townsville, Newcastle are playing good football and worrying one of the top sides for 60min last week will have gotten the Cowboys attention. Henry is gone, we know that and the team has no real chance of making the eight. The Guru thinks that’s enough to tip the home side. The NQ players like Neil Henry and they will want to make up for the times they didn't put in, because those times contributed a great deal to the loss of his job. The Guru thinks Newcastle are stuck with a few roster issues, the recipe isn't quite right, too much Old Spice and not enough essence of Beaver...some of those blokes are so old, that when they pull of a signature move everyone thinks its brand new!
Manly - How much do the Raiders care about their coach? Because the answer to that question will play a big part in who the winner of this game is. On their home ground, Canberra are capable of beating Manly, but to do so, they will need to fire as Manly have also got plenty to play for, The Eagles won’t like facing defeat for the second week in a row and after Toovey did a ‘Toovey’ on camera the other day, he’s 10k lighter and one loss closer to the heart attack or aneurysm he appeared to be suffering on live telly...it can't be healthy to be that shade of red surely! Keep an eye on the darkened glass of the Raiders private box for a shadowy figure who myth has it, got hooked on catnip at his last gig…? If the Green Machine run out to ‘Eye of the Tiger’...there’s your sign!
Melbourne - The no brainer of the year it appears? well this time last year The Guru himself, in tow with the ball and chain attended the reverse of this game, Par v Mel from Parramatta stadium. It was the game after Kearney was axed and Hindmarsh's last home game or something. The Mrs had acquired some free tickets...turned out to be a hellofa game with Hindmarsh scoring the winning try and the ‘G’ inspired by the moment had placed a nice little wager on Para 1-12 @ about 9.60ish minutes before the game...good thing too as the obligatory presents for the left behind kiddies cost an arm and a leg...bare broke even for the trip! alas nothing so fanciful here, the G is at home and so are Melbourne. 50+
Roosters - Will be very hard to stop this team, SBW, BBQ boy and Michael ‘i just had a sip Gus’ Jennings must be the buys of the season and don't forget Coach Robinson, the rookie mastermind shoe-in for most surprising performance in your first year at the Roosters. The Guru is very tempted, very tempted indeed to spill forth the torrent of thoughts i have on the Sharkies but as a good student i will follow the boss and zip it...a bit anyway. The news this fine morning had a young lass talking about complaints made by a former employee of the Cronulla Sharks, apparently the price to ride the G train had risen so much that the club had to ask for help from a sponsor...and open a special savings account to keep it maintained. I guess it did run for 200+ meters every weekend and make plenty of stops. Roosters in biggest win of the year...teach’em a lesson Sonny!

I had feeling they would win too as there's almost always upset on Monday Night Football ( look at Titans couple weeks back ). Sorry to see Thinker had a worse round with getting only 3 from 8. That sort of thing almost always doesn't happen to him ! I'm sorry Thinker ! :-(
