Round twenty-one selections

Newcastle Knights vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – Hunter Stadium

I had to think about this one for a while, as the Knights are down on troops in the front row and the Broncos need to have their must-win mindset with them each and every week. The Broncos got there last weekend, and it shouldn't surprise anyone that it was Justin Hodges that got them over the line. He has, for most of this season, looked like one of the few likely attacking options they have going for them. That said, the return of Hoffman to fullback seems to be the right move, and his kick-returns are another reason why the Broncos are not without hope. All those extra yards he can make, combined with what looks like an advantage for the Broncos in the forwards, keeps them in this game. Don't be afraid to tip them if you have a hunch. My only concern remains with there inability to turn opportunities into points, and I won't be convinced until I see them string some wins together in a row. It's not often wingers can be the difference in a footy game, but I worry about those young Bronco wingers. They will be defending against Akuila Uate and James McManus, and those two have scored 27 tries already this season. Knights by 1-12.

Verdict – Knights

Result - Knights 18 drew with Broncos 18

Penrith Panthers vs Sydney Roosters – Friday night – Centrebet Stadium

Here they are folks - my 2013 Premiers. No, it's not the Panthers but the chickens from Bondi that will be lifting that big awkward trophy in September. They are playing at a level above all others as far as I'm concerned. The Bunnies or the Storm at their very best would make a game of it but even then I think the chooks would get the upper hand eventually. The Roosters beat the Knights pretty comfortably last weekend and the weekend before that the Knights blew the Panthers off the paddock. It's not always that simple but there's only one team to tip in this game.

Verdict – Roosters

Result - Roosters 42 defeated Panthers 6

New Zealand Warriors vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night – Mt Smart Stadium

Since round ten the only side to beat the Warriors was the Rabbitohs. The lads from across the ditch are a side that deserve to make the top eight and boy oh boy they'll provide plenty of headaches for any opponent that faces them in week one of the finals. Mt Smart has become something of a fortress in recent times, and wins over quality opponents (Knights, Sea Eagles, Storm) is proof of such. The Sharks are hanging tight as a group but the ASADA vultures are circling overhead. This reads like one of those games where they may drop their bundle.

Verdict – Warriors

Result - Sharks 18 defeated Warriors 14

Parramatta Eels vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday night – Parramatta Stadium

These sides met just four rounds ago, and the Sea Eagles won by 50-10. That score sounds about right, and whatever I said four rounds ago is probably still right as well.

Verdict – Sea Eagles

Result - Sea Eagles 40 defeated Eels 6

North Queensland Cowboys vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

You've all seen it before - a team underperforming on the paddock suddenly works out how to win following the sacking of the coach. Well the Cowboys actually said goodbye to two coaches this week because Graham Murray, the man replaced by Neil Henry, passed away on Sunday. Few at the Cowboys would have a bad thing to say about Henry, and I doubt that any would have a bad thing to say about Murray. With that in mind, I think the Cowboys will lift on Saturday night and pull out one of their best efforts of the season. Is that enough to beat the Bunnies? Perhap it isn't, but don't forget that Parramatta managed to win after they sacked Stephen Kearney in 2012. This Cowboys side has a lot more talent in it than that Parramatta side. I'm tipping the home side in one of the upsets of the year. Back the Cowboys with the handicap start, and do so with confidence. Gamble responsibly. Gamble responsibly.

Verdict – Cowboys

Result - Cowboys 30 defeated Rabbitohs 12

Canberra Raiders vs Melbourne Storm – Sunday afternoon – Canberra Stadium

Here's my crazy statistic for this weekend. The away team has won the last five clashes between these two sides. Canberra have won their last three games in Melbourne and the Storm have won their last two in Canberra. In a game where I was struggling to find a winner that seemed a logical enough way to split these two. They may have lost four of their last five but I'll stick with the Storm. I still expect them to peak in the lead up to the finals and we're getting closer every week.

Verdict – Storm

Result - Storm 68 defeated Raiders 4

Gold Coast Titans vs Wests Tigers – Sunday afternoon – Skilled Park

The Titans should win this game, but I can't warm to the backline they've named for Sunday afternoon. They have a forward pack that could win a premiership but without Kelly, Zillman and Idris they just look a little short on for talent in the backs. The Tigers will probably avoid the wooden spoon this season but winning this game will guarantee it. The visitors in an upset.

Verdict – Tigers

Result - Titans 36 defeated Tigers 6

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Monday night – WIN Jubilee Oval

All the Dragons have to play for in season 2013 is pride. Pride won't beat the Bulldogs on Monday night - with or without Ben Barba.

Verdict – Bulldogs

Result - Bulldogs 39 defeated Dragons 20

I'm with Wally this week but do give the Broncos a good chance.

I hope you prove the doubters wrong Thinker but if the Cowboys can't win at home last week when their season was in the balance against a fellow struggler how can they beat an inform Bunnies outfit? I enjoy your logic week in week out but logic and the NRL don't always go hand in hand. Good luck!!

Can The Thinker be trusted? Tigers? Cowgirls? Time will tell..................

Guessmaster's picture

Tigers were solid against Eagles. Titans lost lots of players this week. Good roughie.

newbie from perth's picture

Hi guys,

Not quite as knowledgeable as you guys but here goes...

Broncos - why not eh?
The Mighty Roosters - hopefully they'll win comfortably
Warriors - hmm?
Manly - should be a no-brainer
Rabbits - how much kava have you had O Great One?
Raiders - gets chilly in Canberra doesn't it? MS up'n'down
Tigers - on good advice from Mr T and the Guessmaster
Doggies - methinks slightly better than STG?

Thanks to Steel Panther for explaining to this newbie from Perth that "logic and the NRL don't always go hand in hand". It makes me feel a little better knowing it's just not me. Cheers.

Thanks also to the Great One for his uplifting prediction that my beloved Chooks will win the GF this year. Oh I so hope that you are on the money with this one Mr T. But I just worry a little that your glimpse into the future may have been slightly influenced by a little too much of that smelly brown liquid. Geez I hope not.

Hope you're having a good time my friend and get back safely. Good luck to everyone else and hope your team wins this weekend. Cheers.

P.S. Where's the Guru? I look forward to his insights. Or have I missed him while putting in my tips here?

Judith's picture

well, Mr Guru I have to have my tips in by 1730hrs!!

Guru Craig's picture

Never fear, The Guru is here....Sorry all, busy week.

Brisbane - The Bronco's did me proud last week, they dug deep and got the win, just. Newcastle will be hard to beat at home, the Knights have improved and they can smell the sweet scent of finals football. Brisbane know they have to win, the question is, are they good enough? The Guru is betting they are, again. Though not by much. Griffen is coaching for his job and doing well, those who tuned into Guru TV last week will know that coincidence or not, the Bronco's ran out a team spot of with what the G has been saying, if they can keep hungry they've every chance.

Roosters - I hope Penrith can give the Chooks a solid hit out, thats all i would be looking for if my first name was Ivan and not 'The'. Penrith have proved the doubters wrong, they have played with heart and given their best for the majority of the year. Tonight they face the Roosters, themselves a bit of a surprise, as like the boss, The Guru fancy's them to be at the final dance. Robinson's team is too good not to win.

NZW - The G train is back, unfortunately so is ASADA. The Guru thinks this game would have been a bit of a rough affair with a close win to the waste infected Sharkies but....Asada + Cullen leaving + infinite drama rumors and media attention = NZW getting a home win. Im not a maths genius like the Boss, so feel free to check my addition.

Manly - The Guru has added Jamie Lyon to his Fantasy football side, even made him captain, and being a proud Queenslander im happy to say he hasn't let me down once, Jamie is one of the premier players in the NRL, he has the instinct and hunger to win driven by the special talent that make him a markee player...Glad im not a Blue as good'ol Jamie hasn't got such a good record with them...

Cowboys - Im with The Thinker...some games just have to be won, the reasons and motivations are different, personal. The Cowboys have the side to win, they potentially have a better kicking game, faster more fluent backline and forwards that can hold onto the Monster Burgess pack for at least 70mins or so, JT is the man to watch, see if you can keep an eye on him, watch him talk to his players, take command of the game..JT motm if NQ win.

Melbourne - The Storm need to fire, now is the time to make your finals aspirations clear, every team has reasons to fire up but The Guru believes The Storm are the one side capable of beating Souths and the Roosters. Ill be very disappointed if Mel lose this.

Tigers - Might be a bit of a punt this one but my gut says Cats, i think..or i could just be hungry, Mrs Guru is letting the side down....#$%& ...hold on,,,,,

Bulldogs - Im back and unharmed, almost..Mrs G got a bit upset, as Dragons fans will be after the Mauling the Dogs are going to give them. Canterbury should win this well, the flames of finals footy have been extinguished for the Red V.

Apologies for the last minute tips people...hope i got some winners for you. Guru TV will be back sometime this weekend!

Johnny Ray's picture

NRL's Cowboys beat Souths 30-12 ! THINKER !!! ;-D

Steel Panther's picture

Well done Thinker and Guru Craig on picking the Cowboys last night. It's a pity the Tigers let you both down with an awful performance today. Of the two upsets you tipped I was thinking that the latter game was the more likely to come home but hey that's the NRL for you.

Guru Craig's picture

<***The Guru TV***> S01E02

( you'll have to use your imagination...until the boss gets his own TV show anyway )

The Cowboys win....who in their right mind would have expected anything else, The Thinker and The Guru both tipped the Cows for the upset of the round. 3.10 is where The Guru got on...then got off with a few added zeros courtesy of The Melbourne Storm...’G’ up boys!!! Yeehaa.

Oh it's-a lonesome away from your kindred and all
Playing in Townsville at night we heard the wild Cowboys call
But there's-a nothing so lonesome, morbid or drear
Than to stand in 1300Smiles Stadium with no football or cheer
Now Sam is anxious for the penalty to come
But there's a get stuffed look on the face of the bum...err ref
Isaac’s gone all cranky and Maguire’s acting queer
Oh what a terrible place is a Saturday night in Townsville For a
Souths team with no Cheer

2013 The Guru (Co Written by Slim Dusty)

The Fresh cool air of NZ did the waste disposal Sharkies the world of good, i guess The Guru needs to check his math. And another big win for the Shire, the teams new sponsor are upgrading the sharps bins for bigger units, safety and convenience.

Enough of that!...Brisbane and Newcastle, couldn't ask for more effort, did you see the blokes after 90mins....If Friday night was Round 1, Both sides would be confident and both coaches happy enough.
It’s a shame for both thats its not, 20 rounds down and it looks like the above are both gooooone.

Throw in NQ with that lot too

Stay tuned for the next installment....Guru TV is a subsidiary of Thinkervision
