Four Nations Final
New Zealand vs Australia – Saturday night – Westpac Stadium (Wellington)
Three weeks ago the Kiwis made the Kangaroos look second-rate on their own patch. It demonstrated the ongoing development of New Zealand rugby league. They have held their form since that first outing and have had the enormous benefit of staying in New Zealand since the win in Brisbane. Only one significant change for the home side - Leuluai is unavailable with injury and Issac Luke takes ownership of the number 9 jersey. Their spine has a wealth of NRL experience to draw upon and Hiku and Foran know each others games well. They are ably supported by a fantastic pack of forwards and two wingers playing as well as ever. The Kangaroos are improving with each outing but they are coming off a low base. The win over Samoa was convincing enough but this is another level entirely. They have to travel, they have to battle a team virus and they have to battle that niggling little voice the Kangaroos don't get to listen to very often - the voice of self-doubt. I expect the New Zealand forwards to win the important battle (especially with a hugely parochial crowd pushing them on). Issac Luke is clever enough and quick enough to make the most of that advantage, and Johnson and Foran will get every opportunity to turn that advantage into points. One can never doubt the Kangaroos. From time to time they come together and play nearly flawless football, and when that happens the tide of green and gold cannot be stopped by anyone. I've posted a video of flawless football below - the last World Cup final. But they are a long way from flawless football at the moment. I'm sure they'll make a game of this, but I'm with the Kiwis.
Verdict – New Zealand by 7
Result - New Zealand 22 defeated Australia 18

Awesome ! And we're back this week with Four Nations Test Match Rugby League which is really great for me as it's gives me something besides American Football to watch this week ! Oh Man I don't know about you and how you guys are holding up but I haven't been taken off season well at all ! Any time I've been watching the NFL lately and ref makes bad call, I drive down to my local Footlocker and scream at all their employees ! Still who am I kidding ? It's Jarrad Hayne that I'm really mad at ! I can't believe that he decided leave us like that ! Dude ! Let's get on with this week tips :
England 13 plus - Samoa has strike power but not players that's why guys you've got to go with England in this one ! Final Score 28-10 to England. Best bet Sam Tomkins to score first try just because all NZ Warriors import players always put on their best performance when playing for their home country. Don't get me started with Andy Platt.
Australia 12 under - Man I don't want to admit it but even an under strength Kangaroos Squad will be too strong for Kiwis considering who how coach is. There's reason why a lot of our detractors in this country call our national rugby league team Parliament Eels when you have Stephen Kearney as your coach. All we can hope for is that score remains close. Final score 18-14 to Australia. Best Bet G.I last try scorer.
Thanks Thinker ! Go New Zealand ! Kiwi Power ! Peow ! Peow ! ;-D

Hi Thinker, 'a" and Johnny Ray
Man is it good to see you guys post again. Like you JR I'm not handling the off season at all. Been watching reruns of Happy Days and Mork & Mindy!
I'll go with the flow and take the Poms and the Aussies.
Being a Broncos fan a little of me wishes Samoa well with Josh Maguire playing.
I think we have all heard enough about Jarryd Hayne but as a QLD'er I'm glad to see him gone from the Blues. I would like to wish him every success as this is a very gutsy move...gotta feel for those Parra fans!
Scores???
England 24 Samoa 6
Aust 20 NZ 12

Great to have you back Thinker and good to see some of us have survived the last few "footy-free" weeks. I'm watching the basketball and A-League now.
I can't disagree with anyone on an England/Australia double this weekend. Samoa haven't exactly got off to a good start have they with three players fined. The Kiwis tend to only beat the Kangaroos when the Kangaroos play bad which is a rarity at the best of times. Even an understrength Australian team looks too good.
Who else saw the haka in the Under 20s Test match last week?
Finally I'm sure everyone agrees that the Lance Hohia/Ben Flower incident in the Super League Grand final was an act of thuggery the game doesn't need. Sad for the fans who want to see 13 v 13.
Enjoy the weekend everyone!!

England 13+ The Old Blighty were good for about 60mins last time they played the Aussies.' The Guvner' reckons 60 good minutes from the Poms will be enough to handle Samoa. Enthusiasm wont be lacking from the islanders but that'll run with the score line. England always believe they have a chance in the four nations and men with belief, enough to have a crack anyway, will be far too good for the Samoa side.
England by 13+
Australia 13+ When The Guru was a boy he was given a model boat, this wasn't just any boat though, T'was a genuine Amway scale model of Bondies Australia II. Unlike Alan's version, The little Guru's one when tested, didn't float so well...Tim Sheens takes his side to Suncorp stadium on Saturday to defend the four nations trophy, the mighty SS Australia has a few new crew members, but Sheensie's boys are NRL players, the best footballers of all codes in all of the world. NZ are too, but The Guru feels the Aussie 'B' team may have a few things to prove.
Australia by 11-20 @ $3.75 looks ok

Hi everyone,
Woo-Hoo! The footy’s back again!
No real idea with the make-up of the other 3 sides player-wise so I won’t make any comments in that regard but I will be happy to sit down and watch both games. I will however tip England and the Aussies to win. Can’t go against the general consensus can I?
Besides the Aussies winning (hopefully), I’m really looking forward to seeing the Kiwi haka. I know this might sound strange coming from a true-blue Aussie, but man I love that haka thing. Gets ya spine tingling and it must make you Kiwis so proud and pumped. Just wish we had something like that. Oh well, that’s life I guess.
Over here in the West we’ll be able to see the games live on GEM. Thank you GEM! One good thing about the time difference and not having daylight-saving is that we get to see it early in the day. England vs Samoa from 2pm-4pm and then the Aussies vs Kiwis from 4.40pm-7pm. At least we can watch the games and then do something afterwards ‘cos it’ll still be early.
Biggest decision I have to make is whether or not to watch the movie that’s on before the Eng vs Samoa game. C’mon, it’s “How The West Was Won”. You know, that 1962 classic starring John Wayne, James Stewart and Gregory Peck. Ya gotta admit it’s tempting right?
Nah not really. I think footy “withdrawal” symptoms are starting to effect my sanity! I have to admit I’ve just started watching the Friday night A-League games out of desperation. Yes, I know I should hang my head in shame but hey, Perth Glory are on top of the ladder! Then again they’ve only played 2 games so far so not sure how long they’ll be there!
Have also taken an interest in the Pommie EPL (I’m a huge Arsenal fan and have been since I was about 12 years old). At least I’ve been winning some loose change betting on the games for the last 3 rounds. Started with $120 and I’m sitting on $190 at the moment. Hey, having some fun and keeping my nose in front. And most importantly, I’m “gambling responsibly” as the Boss always tells us.
Not sure I’ll be having a punt on the 4 Nations though. As I said, I’m not too clued-up with this side of the game. The Newbie is still learning you see.
Good to see the Boss has put up the Four Nations thing and as a mad keen lover of the Melbourne Cup, I’m really looking forward to his take on that as well.
Good too to see some old favourites putting up some comments. Feels like “old times” again. Thanks guys!
@ the Steel Panther - What’s this “Lance Hohia/Ben Flower incident” all about? Mate, I’m gonna have to go off and do me some “Googling” I think.
OK people, must dash. Enjoy the games on Saturday. I for one, plan to absorb as much as I can to try and tide me over until next year. Thanks Boss, thanks everyone else. Cheers.
P.S. Anyone have a crack at making some Baileys? If so, what’s the verdict? I’d be interested to hear. Cheers (again).

Re: The Ben Flower incident
Ooh Panther, that was nasty! Just went online and checked out the Ben Flower madness. Dude, what the hell was he thinking?
Yeah I know it was in the heat of battle and he was most probably all fired up and so on but still…
If getting the first one away wasn’t bad enough, to follow up while Lance was defenceless on his back with no possible way of defending himself or even retaliating was an absolutely “gutless” act. This bloke should be ashamed of himself. The size of his fist was nearly as big as Lance’s head for crying out loud!
The “beautiful game” is indeed a hard and tough one to play and not for the faint-hearted but seriously, there is no room in it for guys that do stuff like that.
I used to love the biffo in the old days (especially in SOO games) but what I’ve just seen on YouTube was disgraceful. Man, I still can’t believe he actually did that! I’m freakin’ out man!
Anyway, what goes around comes around as they say. No doubt he’ll get his one day in some shape or form.
OK enough of the negative. Let’s move on to the “positive” of Saturday’s upcoming footy-fest! Yee-Hah!

Just read another comment piece in Roar about how after success South Sydney Rabbitohs has had this year, the NRL should seriously considered readmitting Central Coast Bears into competition. Since I've got you all here I would love to know what you guys (and gals) opinion is on NRL expansion and where our game should go to next (especially yours Thinker). For me personally if we are to properly compete with AFL by 2018, we need to have same number of teams as them, at least in same locations. That's why I've always propose we should expand competition to twenty teams with team from Adelaide (The Adelaide Rams), team from Perth (The West Coast Pirates), another team in Brisbane (The Redcliffe Dolphins) and a fourth team either from South Central Queensland (The Toowoomba Tomahawks), The Central Coast Bears or if Warriors do decide to move to Wellington, The Auckland Vulcans. That and they really should look at forcefully relocating couple of Sydney teams like The Tasmanian Tigers or The Rockhampton Sharks. There's your National Rugby League Competition, "NRL" ... ;-D

Agreed
Submitted by Steel Panther on
Yea Newbie it was a nasty incident. What was worse was it happened in only the 2nd minute so Wigan played virtually the whole game a man short. I've never minded a bit of good old biffo but this was just over the top.
Like your expansion thoughts JR. I remember the Super League days when we had teams like the South Queensland Crushers and Hunter Mariners. You even go back further to the North Sydney Bears and Illawara Steelers before the merger days.

Good morning all!
Wow how about those Kiwis! I know the Aussies were under strength but they looked tired. No excuse the Kiwi players should have been just as tired.
and
How about Samoa gave the Poms a big fright. After watching both games I think the Aussies would have struggled against any of the other sides. Josh Mcguire looked like a man on a mission.
YES Johnny Ray I could not fault your expansion suggestions. Move 1 or 2 Sydney teams and ad a couple of new ones.
I also think we need to look at player salaries. Aust only has about 23 million people so there's only so much money to go around and expansion will dilute that money further. Maybe set a salary cap on positions and bring in more young hopefuls on base salary. That way if the million dollar superstars (Hayne Inglis Smith etc) want to code hop for cash then let them go.
Watched some Murri Carnival finals on the weekend and man there's some real talent in those young Aboriginal boys...bet they'd give anything for a shot at the NRL and be real happy on $80 - $100 grand.
Anyway just my thoughts for what they're worth.
Good to see Christine and the Steel Panther back as well.
Sorry Newbie haven't made the Baileys yet. Told my missus what I wanted to do and currently I'm sleeping with the dog out the back.

Newbie,
I'll definitely be posting a Melbourne Cup preview on Saturday night (once we have our official starters)...and I should have a betting promotion or two to share as well.
I was down in Melbourne for the Cox Plate last weekend. Five men at the races for two successive days. Good times - but I'm still a little foggy.

Awesome and we're back with week two, thanks Thinker ! ;-D
New Zealand - Like everybody else on this site I was surprised to see Kiwi's get up and beat Kangaroos last weekend. Alot of that had to do with injuries as just how unlucky was Australia to lose key players in a match when they're already fielding strong depleted side. Still as Kiwi I did love it seeing all the players from Australian Kanagroo 1994 test side having to sit in there in stands and watch their team lose. You can just imagine conversation ' Hey Langer ! ' ' Laurie ! ' ' Mal ' ' Renouff ! Did you say that ? That was one of your signature moves he just score on, straight up middle ! ' * Announcer * Try to Australia, kick to come. 'Yeah, here we go ! Hey Ricky, you cheap c**t ! Why don't you go get us all beer !' ' P** Off Harragon ! ' ' Yeah, or hey better yet, why don't you swear like that to ref again and we'll all get man on field to buy us the next round ! ' 'F*** You !' ' Hey shut up you guys, New Zealand got ball again ! ' ' They're not going to score here, they're not going score here, they're not going ... S*** ! ' New Zealand will beat Samoa but in a tight contest. New Zealand to win. Final score 28-16 to New Zealand.
Australia - Speaking about luck, who here like me feels for Samoa ? I do because they really should of beaten England in last week game ! That's why I'm going to go with Australia here to win in another close tight contest. Final Score 18-10 to Australia.
Awesome. Thanks everybody ! Go Kiwi's ! Kiwi Power ! Peow ! Peow ! ;-D

Hi everyone,
Last week! Didn’t see that coming. In hindsight though it wasn’t that surprising. Well done Kiwis! Actually enjoyed watching them play some really good footy. Just hope our selectors get rid of some blokes carrying injuries and those whose hearts aren’t in it.
Yeah, crunch time for our boys against the Poms. Of course I’m tipping us to win but gee the pressure’s on. Lose and we’re out eh? Hmm, reminds me of an old saying I heard when I was just a mere lad. “The longer you keep winning, the closer you get to losing”. Hope that doesn’t ring true this week!
As Johnny Ray said, Samoa were dead unlucky last week. Not that I hate the Poms but really wanted the Samoans to win that one. I thought they played a great game of footy and they should be proud of themselves. Unfortunately I don’t think they have enough in ‘em to win this weekend, especially considering how well the Kiwis played against us. Hope the Samoan boys do well though.
Agree with your thoughts on where the game is heading in the future Thinker. Newbie thinks that this will come about because all these fellas from across the globe come here to play in the “best competition in the world”. When you have the best players from different countries playing in the best competition in the world, it can only make the standard of footy improve even more don’t you think? Good for them, good for us, good for everyone. Sometimes it’s just too easy ain’t it?
Anyway, I better move on and get myself some shut-eye soon. Early start Fridays means I’m up at 4.00 tomorrow morning. Man there’s gotta be an easier way to make a living. If anyone knows of one, please let me know. Cheers.
Yes, looking forward to your Cup preview Thinker. As you say, we need to wait until the final field has been settled but I usually like to wait until the Makinnon’s been run anyway before I start considering the chances. But at this stage I’ve got a rough list for anyone interested:
Newbie’s Nags:
Fawkner
Mutual Regard
Brambles
Lucia Valentina
Newbie’s Roughies:
Junoob
Au Revoir
But hey, these aren’t set in stone. Need to wait until Sat night, have a read what the Boss has to say and then sit down Sunday morning for a couple of hours and “nut it out”. Don’t forget … “gamble responsibly” people.
@ Mark Ashford - no Baileys yet my man? Maybe you shouldn’t have told the missus and just made some on the sly. When she found out you could have offered her a glass or three to show her you were "so very sorry". Give it time my friend, she’ll come around. And when she does, it’ll be a sad day for the dog. He’s gonna miss having his Dad keep him company on those cold nights. Oh well, these things happen. Cheers.
P.S. Isn’t it strange how glue doesn’t get stuck to the container it’s in. Hmm…

Hi All
The Aussies will beat the Poms no problem. The "old enemy" will fall. Australia by 12 points.
I don't like Greg Bird but his front on tackling of those big Kiwi dudes last week was something else...one of our best.
Samoa were unlucky last week and they'll be a little unlucky this again week. Too much class in the Kiwis. NZ by 10.
Newbie don't worry about the dog mate, I also told the boss I was buying a 4wd to go Tailor fishing on Fraser Island . Dat dawg gunna have company for years!

Hello all,
I carried on my consistent form last week. In other words tipping at only 50%!! I was as surprised as anyone with the Kangaroos loss but I was really surprised with how rusty they looked. Or maybe that was tired? I thought Kevin Proctor stood out for the Kiwis last weekend with the Kangaroos not helped by DCE's injury and GI's no show in the second half.
I can't see Australia losing two in a row which would mean they are out of the comp. Kangaroos 1-12.
Kiwis to win the other match 1-12.
Have a great weekend everyone!!

Hi everyone,
Last week of footy before the final eh? Make or break for a couple of teams so it should be a great weekend of “desperation” footy. OK let’s get into it…
Kiwis vs Poms
You’d think the Kiwis should win this wouldn’t you? After the 1st week I would’ve said it was a given but seeing how the unlucky Samoans dished it up to them last week, I’m not too sure now. The way the Poms played against us last week has me thinking as well. Geez I’m liking Jimmy Graham more and more each time I see him play. He’s a good-un he is. Just keeps pluggin’ away. Also thinking the Kiwis need to watch out for that Ryan Hall guy and Mr Widdop. Poms need to watch out for Taumalolo and Johnson I reckon. End of the day the Newbie thinks the Kiwis should get home by about 4 points, maybe 6. Peow! Peow!
Aust vs Samoa
Hmmm, bit nervous about this one. We’ve been playing some really average footy last couple of weeks whereas the Samoan boys have impressed, albeit without winning. They were desperately unlucky last week and they must give themselves some sort of chance going into this game. Not sure why the Aussies are playing below their usual standard. Is it because we have these “new combinations” that everyone has to get used to? Or is it just because the other 3 sides, due to their players running around in the NRL, have improved so much that they’re now up there with the best? Whatever the reason, the Aussies need to get their fingers out or else it’s curtains! I’ll stick with the Aussies and tip ‘em to win, without much confidence, by about 6 points, maybe 8. Not as many points as our friend “a” has tipped though! Gee whiz, 64-6, really? Mate, at least you’re showing some confidence in that score-line. Hope you’re right, but it’ll be a huge turnaround in form if it does end up near that score. Good luck with that “a”.
Ok people, don’t forget to tune in over the weekend as there’s only a week after that until we all go “cold turkey”. Cheers.
P.S. If a children refuse to sleep during nap time, are they guilty of resisting a rest? Hmm…

Ah man as this Four Nations final is just another Anzac, Trans-Tasman clash, dude how about we tell couple of our favorite jokes about each other ? Cool, here's mine : An Aussie is walking through fields when he sees another Aussie behind a sheep, sweating, swearing and grunting. 'Oi !' Said the first Aussie man 'You Shearing ?' And Aussie man with sheep replies ' No Mate ! Now f***k off and go and get your own !' Hahahahaha ... What ? Alright as much as I don't want to say it, I really, really, can't see us Kiwis beating Australians twice in same competition. That's why as much as I don't want to admit it but I'm going with Kangaroos to win in close tight even contest ! Australia to win. Final score 26-20 to Kangaroos. Man of the match, Cameron Smith.
Finally I just want to say to Christine how sorry I am to hear about what you, your family and most importantly your Mum are going through. I know that times must be incredibly tough for you now which only shows me how incredibly brave both of you must be and how I know what ever happens next I know you will find way through it ! Stay strong Christine ! Keep fighting :-)

Hi everyone,
OK, last game we get to see before the rot sets in for about 4 months. Sheesh, hope it’s a good one so we can store it in the memory banks!
So, this is being played over the “dutch” in NZ. And so it should I reckon. Then again, a footy field is a footy field is a footy field. One problem the Aussies will have, besides a great Kiwi outfit, will be the crowd I reckon. Gotta be worth a few extra points eh?
OK, the Kiwis smashed us in the first game. Not making excuses but we had, I think, 5 debutants, the "Goanna" got crook at halftime and never made it back, nor did DCE. Under-strength and inexperience cost us dearly. But hey, if it was me I’d take it (the win) any day. Mate, it’s in the record books and that’s what matters.
I’m hoping we’re gonna have a better crack this time around. Reckon we’ve improved a bit and barring any major injuries as well as this virus thing going around, we’re a chance to pinch this one.
Hard games against Samoa and England might work for the Kiwis or it might work against. Not sure really.
The Aussies got smacked, then had a hard (some say lucky) win against the Poms and then they go out and give the Samoans a shellacking. Mind you, we were helped by the Samoan boys’ lack of discipline at times I seem to recall.
Are the Kangas on the improve? Are the combinations starting to click? Have they got their “mojo” back? Man, I just don’t know. I’m hoping yeah, but you never know.
Kiwis at home, undefeated, classy outfit. Makes for a potentially mouth-watering encounter on Saturday.
Coverage over here starts at 3.30pm and will be over at around 6pm. That’s one of the benefits I think. Then we can all go off and do our “thang” and maybe even partake (responsibly of course) of a few (or more) glasses of homemade Baileys. Yes Sir!
1. Stay strong Christine and trust in the Universe to get your dear old Mum through this small bump in the road OK?
2. Good luck to Johnny Ray and all our other Kiwi cousins and may we witness a spectacle! Aussies by 8. Cheers.
P.S. Is atheism a non-prophet organization? Hmmm…

Sorry Johnny, forgot to post a joke. No offence intended, just a bit of fun. Everyone’s welcome to throw an Aussie joke back at me for sure. Here goes…
An Aussie bloke is having a quiet drink in a bar and leans over to the big guy next to him and says:
“Do you wanna hear a Kiwi joke?”
The big guy replies:
“Well mate, before you tell that joke, you should know something. I'm 1.90 m tall, 125 kgs and I played front row for the NZ Kiwis.”
"The guy next to me is 1.85 m, weighs 115 kgs and he's an ex-Kiwi lock."
"Next to him is a bloke who's 2 m tall, weighs 120 kgs and he's a current NZ Kiwi second rower. Now do you still want to tell that Kiwi joke?"
The Aussie bloke says:
“Nah, not if I'm going to have to explain it three times."
Cheers.

Love the jokes lads!! Nothing like a bit of Aussie/Kiwi banter.
I can't look past the Kangaroos this weekend. They seem to have flown under the radar and this has all the hallmarks of the 1988 WC Final at Eden Park. I recall in that game Big Blocker Roach being sin binned and the crowd giving him hell as he trudged off for an unscheduled rest. Steve looked up and pointed at the score board. Enough said.
Kangaroos 1-12.
Interesting to see some of the player movements for next season.
Last game of footy until the Auckland Nines next February. Enjoy!!

Morning all!
Christine, you're very welcome! I just hope things improve for you. I feel the Thinker has created a "little family" here. I know I care what happens to all you guys.
4 Nations. I thought the Kiwis were superb and deserved their win. Imagine having Manu "the beast" running at you at full speed! And Shaun Johnson must be one of the best halves running around.
Anyway it's over again for another year. Time to put the footy socks and jersey away until March 2015...that seems like forever.
I can't thank The Thinker and his Little Helper enough. AND to all the followers of this site....MAY SANTA BE GOOD TO YOU!
See ya in 2015 (can't wait to see what Wayne will do with those Broncos)

Well I certainly didn't see Saturday's result coming. I always thought that the Kangaroos would bounce back even with so many first choice picks out.
Agree with you Mark. I don't think I have seen a better game from Manu in a long long time. His work rate alone was admirable and to think he didn't even drop one carry. Overall he had a great series.
Best wishes to all for a safe and happy festive season and especially to you Christine. I hope things work out for your Mum.
Lastly a big thanks again to the Thinker for inviting me to be part of all the fun and to TLH for all the behind the scenes work.
Hope to see everyone back in 2015!!
