Round eight selections

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Sydney Roosters – Friday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

Defence wins football games, and to prove that the table-topping Bulldogs have the best defence in the NRL this season. Things get muddled after that though, because the second and third-best defensive outfits are the tenth-placed Rabbitohs and the 11th placed Roosters. Oh NRL, you crazy crazy cat. No wonder I can't get my head around you in season 2014. In a world when I am sure of so little, it's nice to know that one thing is certain. I am certain the Dragons and Roosters will give us a rib-tickler of a contest on Friday afternoon, as they do each and every ANZAC Day. I'll stick with the Chooks, who have had the upper-hand in ANZAC Day clashes in recent years. Clearly there is nothing wrong with their defence, and there were signs last weekend that their attack is clicking into gear. Compulsory viewing football fans. Compulsory.

Verdict – Roosters by 4

Result - Roosters 34 defeated Dragons 14

Melbourne Storm vs New Zealand Warriors – Friday night – AAMI Park

I've been trying to work out the last time the Storm weren't in the top eight, and after considerable effort I have decided that it was 'ages ago'. To be fair to the purple machine, they are just two points behind the team running first...it's that kind of competition folks. The Storm have lost that aura of invincibility this season, but they may get some of their mojo back this weekend. They'll need to if they want to convince Benji Marshall to join them on little more than match payments. I'll go with the Storm in a tight game where both sides should lift. They are much less likely to find a way to lose when they're in a position to win.

Verdict – Storm by 2

Result - Warriors 16 defeated Storm 10

Brisbane Broncos vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

I'll keep saying it until it is no longer true - I am yet to get a Broncos game right this season. I've changed my selection several times but the fact remains I'll get it wrong anyway, so I may as well just tip someone and stick with it. Broncos fan can rejoice, as I've ended up tipping the Bunnies. The Broncos have lost a number of close games this season, and this looks like another close one. In close games you want a good goalkicker, and Adam Reynolds will out-kick Corey Parker nine times out of ten. Corey Parker is freakishly superhuman, but giving him the goal-kicking duties on top of all that grunt work in the middle is bordering on cruel. If the Broncos do win I think their centre pairing can prove the difference, but I'm not sure that's enough.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 2

Result - Rabbitohs 28 defeated Broncos 26

Cronulla Sharks vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday afternoon – Remondis Stadium

Luke Lewis and Anthony Tupou aren't quite back, but the Sharks are edging ever closer to their best line-up, and I'm delusional enough to tip them. The Panthers were tremendous against the Titans, but they are on a short back-up from Monday night football and face another big pack of forwards this weekend. I think the Sharks can rumble their way to victory right down the middle of the paddock. It's a feeling in my bones. If they don't win I'll book in for some x-rays.

Verdict – Sharks by 2

Result - Sharks 24 defeated Panthers 20

North Queensland Cowboys vs Parramatta Eels – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

I've come up with some pretty odd reasons to tip teams over the years, but this could be the oddest yet. The officials in charge of this game won't want too many of the 50-50 calls going against the home side, because if they do they may not get out of town(sville) alive. With the results of so many games being decided by the calls of the men in pink, this seems enough of a reason to tip the Cowboys. That the Eels have only won one game in Townsville ever isn't a bad reason either.

Verdict – Cowboys by 2

Result - Cowboys 42 defeated Eels 14

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday night – ANZ Stadium

There's not a lot I like about the Bulldogs current line-up, but I doubt the Bulldogs or their fans care one iota what I think. Top of the table after seven rounds and with a handy points differential (despite all the one-point victories), the Bulldogs are winning and surely that's the name of the game. What I do like about the Bulldogs is the return of Sam Kasiano on the bench. It may take him a few weeks to gain some match fitness but he is one forward that adds a whole new dimension to a football game. I made the mistake of falling for the Knights last weekend and was punished accordingly. I'm hoping not to make that mistake again. Hodkinson kicking five from five, and another field goal for good measure,  should be enough to see the home side through.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 7

Result - Bulldogs 16 defeated Knights 12

Manly Sea Eagles vs Canberra Raiders – Sunday afternoon – Brookvale Oval

This game has 'watch this space' stamped all over it, as we could see some significant line-up changes in the days ahead. The Sea Eagles have named both Cherry-Evans and Brett Stewart for this game. Cherry-Evans may still be injured and Stewart has a drink-driving controversy hanging over his head. It's possible one or both may not play, and Keiran Foran is already ruled out for a number of weeks with injury. Those changes are game-changing, but we'll wait and see what happens. Two weeks seems to be the 'normal' suspension in the NRL for drink-driving offences, but we're talking about Manly here. Geoff Toovey might attempt an Eddie McGuire/Alan Didak type explanation for why Stewart is wearing boots on Sunday. I'll play the cards in front of me and assume they both play, as we're talking about Manly here. Jamie (girls name) Lyon moves into the halves for the injured Foran, and I'm pretty comfortable with that. Peta (girls name) Hiku slots into the centres. Even with two girls named the Manly backline are a quality line-up. The Raiders haven't won two games in a row this season and its hard to punt on them pulling off that feat at Brookvale.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4

Result - Sea Eagles 54 defeated Raiders 18

Wests Tigers vs Gold Coast Titans – Sunday afternoon – Leichhardt Oval

The Titans have won all but two games this season. Monday night was a narrow two-point defeat but their other loss was a complete shellacking...by the Tigers, on the Gold Coast. Many would wonder if the Titans can turn around such a result so quickly. I would too, but if the Eels can do it to the Roosters then the Titans can do it to the Tigers. The Tigers were tremendous (and a little lucky) last weekend and they need to back up and do it again. They do like playing at Leichhardt and should have plenty of self-belief, but the Titans are one team that can match that enormous Tigers pack and bench. Zillman returns for the Titans and the Tigers will have their hands full containing both he and Albert Kelly when the legs are starting to ache. An upset...probably.

Verdict – Titans by 4

Result - Titans 22 defeated Tigers 6

Wally Lewis - round eight selections (in bold)

Alright ! Happy Anzac weekend everybody ! Lets get in this week's picks :

1.) Roosters - I almost, almost, went with Dragons in this one but then I realized just who it was that I was picking against. The Roosters has seem to of found their rare form last week, winning their game in tight contest. It's this sort form they will make them hard to stop. Roosters by 8 points.

2,) Warriors - I know. I know ! Cool, I'm calling this now. People, Warriors will beat Melbourne Storm on Friday. I am so confident that they will win I'm already putting it out there like it's a fact. Warriors to win by 2 points.

3.) Rabbitohs - The Rabbitohs are also back doing what they do best and that's win games. They should of won against Bulldogs so they should win against Broncos even game being played in Brisbane. Rabbits by 12 points.

4.) Sharks - This is one of those game that could go either way that's why I am going to go with Tiger Sharks in this one ! Sharkies to win by 4 points.

5.) Cowboys - They almost beat Sea Eagles. So did Cowboys. Still I am not totally sold on Eels just yet but it doesn't mean that won't be praying that I haven't got this game wrong come kick off ! Cowboys to win by 8 points.

6.) Bulldogs - Bulldogs will beat The Knights. Bulldogs to win by 10 points.

7.) Raiders - The Manly Sea Eagles are at crisis point at moment just when it looks like everything is coming together for Raiders. I know this is more to do with me thinking Canberra top eight side this year but cool they are and this game will provide me with all the proof I need.Raiders by 6 points.

8.) Titans -Tigers were lucky, exceptionally lucky to win last Monday but in this game luck has got nothing to do with it as it all about skill, experience, expertise and consistency. It is this consistency that Titans bring to game is why I'm going with them win in another tight contest. Titans by 2 points.

Awesome. Thanks again Thinker. Go Warriors ! Kiwi Power ! Peow ! Peow ! ;-D

The Joker's picture

I will change just for you johnny, i'll give them another chance, let's hope you're right, i'll owe you a beer ;)

Cheers!

Johnny Ray's picture

I'm hearing 'Tonganator' Konrad Hurrell could be late name inclusion on bench for Friday Night's game against Storm. That's turns out to be true Joker I'll buy us all beer ! Go The Warriors ! ;-D

mark ashford's picture

Let's hope things begin to settle and the teams that are supposed to win start winning.
Roosters
Storm
Broncos (sorry again Mr Thinker)
Sharks
Cowboys
Bulldogs
Manly
Tigers
Origin #1 is only about 5 weeks away so look to players from both sides of the border to begin to play themselves into form to ensure they get their jerseys. Qld are the bookies favourite again...not so sure looking at the form of the Cowboys and Storm. So look for big improvement from these teams. Anyway.... just thought I'd throw that in to confuse you further.

Here are my tips

Roosters by 4 I think Roosters will get a classic here

Storm by 2 I think Storm will win a thriller here

Rabbitohs by 8 I think Rabbitohs to win here

Sharks by 2 I think Sharks will win for a 2nd time here

Cowboys by 6 we will be the wrecking ball this weekend

Bulldogs by 4 The top of the table Bulldogs to beat the Knights here

Raiders by 1 Don't let me down Canberra I hate Manly and I want them to lose

Titans by 2 I think Gold Coast to win narrowly

And Thinkers you think you have not got a Broncos game right this season but you topped them in round 4 and they wrong so your wrong here

The Joker's picture

a... you need to do a course on English. Lol! ;)

Harry 's picture

The thinker, I swear you have no clue what your are talking about....
The chooks don't have the edge over the dragons in Anzac Day matches. The dragons have there're over the chooks 8 - 4. Get your info right

The Animal's picture

Alright!! Lets go for another good round (here's to hoping anyways)

Dragons
Storm
Broncos
Sharks
Cowboys
Bulldogs
Manly
Titans

Yay for origin!!! Always falls on my birthday :)

Steel Panther's picture

I trust eveyone has an enjoyable ANZAC weekend and best of luck with tipping this round.

Roosters - I think the Roosters are on the improve after a tough month. They haven't been convincing to date but neither have the Dragons who hardly looked flash against a team in disarray last weekend.

Storm - Despite the Warriors reasonable record in Melbourne I just can't tip them until I see some (winning) consistency but if the Warriors win I won't be surprised. They usually do when you least expect them to.

Rabbitohs - I think they may win this up front. I'm like the Thinker and have struggled to tip correctly this season where the Broncos are concerned and I have a dreadful Friday night tipping record.

Sharks - Only because it's Penrith's week to lose. I think the Sharks are a different side with Gallen and they are at home.

Cowboys - Home ground and Para's poor away record sees me tipping the Cows. I'm with Johnny Ray here...not totally sold on the Eels yet.

Bulldogs - NC let me down badly last week and are another team that need to show some form before I tip them with confidence. Mason's suspension is untimely for the Knights.

Manly - I note a few positional changes for the Sea Eagles this week brought about by the injury to Keiran Foran. Still not enough for me to tip against them at home.

Tigers - I guess the Titans will be looking for some sort of revenge after getting a hiding by the Tigers in Round 2. But I like the Tigers especially at Leichhardt.

The Thinker's picture

Hello Harry,
Well you are quite right. What I meant to say was "I'll stick with the Chooks, who have had the upper-hand in recent clashes," but something obviously went skewiff in the editing process. I'll blame one of the dozens of highly-paid underlings I have working for me on this site. It's hard to get good help these days.

The last three games between these sides have produced the following results:

2013 : Roosters 34 def Dragons 10 (ANZAC Day)
2013 : Roosters 36 def Dragons 0
2012: Roosters 26 def Dragons 10

Thanks for reading.

Brett Leech's picture

The Thinker did say that that the Chooks have had the upper-hand in recent years,so there's nothing wrong with that statement.

mark ashford's picture

Harry Harry Harry you are no doubt a passionate dragons supporter and for that I salute you. However you should know that we dearly love our "Thinker" the provider of this site where we all have a little fun.
So lighten up Harry remember it's just a game. Oh and good luck to your Dragons but the Roosters will prevail...just.

Hi everyone,

Managed to get this week off from work so I can get my tips in early this week and hopefully no “site maintenance” to contend with (ha-ha). Well done Joker and new "leader" Johnny Ray on 7/8 last week. Not many of us here can boast about that this year eh? OK, onto this week’s tips…

Roosters - as I always say, who else would I pick? Yeah, they’re not playing as well as last year but I’m hoping they’re starting to get their act together.

Storm - why do I keep picking them when they’re obviously not as good as usual. Last 30 minutes last week they seemed confused and looked like second graders. But playing at home, their undoubted class and the fact that the Warriors have conceded more points than anyone else so far this season has tipped me towards the Storm Troopers this week.

Rabbits - this will be a close one methinks. Very hard to pick. Sutton back at five-eighth and Ben and George returning have me leaning towards the Bunnies.

Panthers - I like how the Panthers keep on grinding away. Mind you, having “cry-baby” Gallen back will be a great help to the Sharkies but I’m hoping it won’t be quite enough.

Cowboys - I’m thinking the short turnaround and the heat will be too much for the Eels. Then again, I am the Newbie and could be completely wrong.

Doggies - they keep on winning, albeit by narrow margins lately, and they’re top of the tree. They pick themselves.

Manly - geez, what a tough one here. I suppose you can make a case for both teams. Mulled this one over for quite a while and finally settled on Manly, even though a Green Machine win would not be surprising. Playing at Brookie and rallying behind a certain brother might just get ‘em home this week.

Tigers - they keep on getting the job done. Admiral defence, good recent efforts against good opposition and playing at Leichhardt has swayed me. Titans will give them a good run for their money though.

OK guys and gals, hope you enjoyed your Easter break and didn’t overdose on the chockies. Unfortunately I won’t be able to watch the Roosters “destroy” those Dragons (apologies to our STG friends here) as I have a longstanding “tradition” of watching that AFL rubbish with the boys on ANZAC Day. Only thing that makes it palatable is consuming large quantities of Johnnie Walker, finishing off with a bottle of red (or maybe two) and hopefully seeing that mob with black and white stripes get beaten.

Finally, if I may … please don’t forget what tomorrow is all about! Cheers.

To everyone, spare a thought today for the anzacs & may the football gods be good to us all .

guru craig your late were are your tips , we can't start the week without your tips you know you are the guru .

Guru Craig's picture

The Guru will be at the Bronco's game this evening so the tips will be brief this week. Rnd 8 looks tough for us tipsters so here goes...

Roosters - The Chooks could do with some memory exercises, this time last year they were hot, right now not so much. Should still hold out The Dragons. Syd 1-12

Storm - The Guru wants to tip NZ, he really does. The Warriors are over-due and Melbourne aren't impressing many. NZW at the line looks ok. Storm to edge it by 1 or 2.

Brisbane - Bronco's its time to raise the roof, The Guru will be in the stands, might need a telescope though as the seats he got are closer to the moon than the grass. The Bronco's will be hard up in this game but in front of 50k people...They'll get it done. Bris 1-12

Sharks - The Sharks are due a win and their big boppers should get over the Pennies. Close game feel to it.

Cowboys - The Cowboys seem to be interested in Benji Marshall....The Guru doesn't see it, could be wrong though.

Knights - Upset of the round, not confident but the Guru has a feeling...could be something else but I like the Knights here.

Manly - The Eagles always get Canberra by the smallest of refereeing mistakes...Manly don't lose these, just ask the men in Pink.

Titans - Hmm, another Tiger another week. The Titans are looking a bit stronger here but the 'G' hasn't got a lot of thought here...could go each way...tip the refs

Johnny Ray's picture

WARRIORS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;-D

Steel Panther's picture

Let me be the first to congratulate you on picking the Warriors Johnny Ray. Well done indeed sir. It's just a pity that performances like that are too few and far between. Great 3 out of 3 start for the weekend. And Thinker you've finally picked a Broncos result. And the correct margin to boot!! Sorry no pun intended......

The Joker's picture

Wooooo!! 3/3 thanks johnny ray for the warriors input! I knew they would come good! Pow pow!!

christine forb10's picture

Good to see alex mckinnon watching the knights game yesterday even if he couldn't play himself.

a's picture

Well done to the Cowboys for winning

And also well done to everybody on the tipping ladder 5 is the lowest score this weekend

And what do you think of the test match and city and country teams who do you think to wim

a's picture

Sorry for my spelling

mark ashford's picture

Hi "a" don't worry about your spelling mate just keep those tips coming. The Cowboys played well and deserved their win. They weren't robbed by the refs this week for a change, my Broncos got robbed instead. Seems dangerous to support a Queensland team.
My tips for this weekend are
Australia (by 12) Kiwis have left out some good players
Country (by 4) just a guess no idea really

Guru Craig's picture

Have to agree with you Mark, The Guru was in the stands at Suncorp and had a decent angle on the Squirrels knock-on, plus a few other unorthodox methods used by the pink men.

Brisbane have no kicking game without Hoffman, Hunt was playing kick-it-to-Greg all night, The 'G' doesn't recall seeing one B-Bomb. Vidot spent half the game hands on knees and at times you could have covered the lot with a decent size sheet. However, the boys did play some good football as well. Hodgo is a star, wish he could kick in general play...Bris forward pack were run off their feet with the needle in the red for the last 15min and they missed Sam...Granville is a top lil player but a bad call against the Bunnies... and The Guru agrees with Gordy visa ve Wallace....We need size and aggression in one or two bench men..Surely the NZ test coach/ Bris trainer can put a few names and numbers together...think Carl Webb, Hurrell, Taumalolo, Papali......FIERCE is what we want. two blokes who'll carry 10 hit-ups and 40 tackles each off the bench. Cozza is giving a super human effort each week and Maguire isn't far behind, Macca must be pushing for a Maroon shirt. Lots of work to do Hook.

a's picture

Brisbane was robbed seems like refs can't make the appropriate calls they should be fired because all the teams expect Manly has been treated like wrecking balls

Test March Australia by 20
U20 origin QLD by 25
City vs Country Country by 2
I hope I am right

Harry's picture

hi thinker, just saw your reply. good tip on the roosters, they were looking good. unfortunately I tipped the saints and lost a few dollars in the process!
not going to trust nrl.com tips anymore

Thank goodness mark I'm not a dragons supporter. I'm a warriors fan living in Auckland :) but good call, went a little too far.
