Round eleven selections

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Sydney Roosters – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

One of these sides is heavily impacted by State of Origin representation, and if I told you at the start of the season it would be the Bulldogs you would have sent me out to pasture. NSW coach Laurie Daley has replaced his Roosters halves pairing with a Bulldogs halves pairing. The Dogs also lose their most potent attacking weapon (and freakish try saver) Josh Morris and T-Rex - who is starting to find something close to his best form. The Roosters don't get off lightly with three Origin reps (Jennings, Tupou and Guerra) plus the injury to the otherwise Origin-bound Cordnor. That said, their spine remains intact, most of their forwards are Kiwis and their halves should be ready to play out of their skins. It's been quite some time since the Bulldogs lost, but that seems the result most likely here.

Verdict – Roosters by 16

Result - Roosters 32 defeated Bulldogs 12

Gold Coast Titans vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium

Both sides lost last week but didn't lose too many admirers in the process. It's getting more and more difficult for Titans coach John Cartwright to name a squad - Aidan Sezer and Ashley Harrison are out for quite some time, Greg Bird is suspended, Nate Myles is bonding with a group of winners, and Albert Kelly couldn't train with the side this morning (Wednesday). The Warriors are showing signs of life under their new coach, and the Origin period of the season is the right time of year for this mob to make inroads up the ladder. It starts this weekend, at a venue where they should get a reasonable amount of support in the crowd. Tipping the Warriors in Australia is always risky, particularly for night games,  but I'm going there anyway.

Verdict – Warriors by 8

Result - Warriors 24 defeated Titans 16

Wests Tigers vs Brisbane Broncos – Saturday night – Campbelltown Stadium

Here's a crazy stat to throw your way for this week - the Broncos have played at Campbelltown on five occasions...and they've won them all. And you could make a reasonably convincing case that the Tigers are more affected by Origin than the Broncos this weekend. They lose their keel and captain in Robbie Farah and Aaron Woods up front. The Broncos have a task nonetheless, as they take to the field without three of their most senior players in Thaiday, Parker and Hodges. It could be a tough night for the Broncos forwards but if they can give Hunt, Hoffman and McCullough some field position and some momentum I think they'll keep their unblemished record at Campbelltown intact. Potentially a much better game than first impressions may suggest.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result - Broncos 16 defeated Tigers 14

Canberra Raiders vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon - GIO Stadium

There are seven dwarfs in the nation's capital. Last weekend we got to see 'cranky' Ricky, but we'll no doubt see 'grumpy', 'angry', 'screamy', 'filthy', 'jaded' and 'despondent' later this season. Fear not 'cranky', turn that smile upside-down with a runaway win over a Cowboys side taking on the Canberra weather without both co-captains, their playmaker, their goalkicker, their two prop forwards, two more forwards that got injured last week and Brent Tate. This tip comes with a warning - never jump to conclusions about the Canberra Raiders. This isn't over yet.

Verdict – Raiders by 4

Result - Raiders 42 defeated Cowboys 12

Cronulla Sharks vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Monday night – Remondis Stadium

As a Queenslander, both my heads were watching the press conference following the Sharks loss last weekend, and at least one of my heads noticed something interesting - the Sharks are now losing with such regularity that Paul Gallen doesn't even bother to blame the referees anymore. I could almost feel sorry for him, but I'm saving my sympathy for when ASADA pings him in the weeks ahead. Sorry Paul, you can't blame the referees for that one. And let's hope there aren't any nasty side-effects from all those crazy animal drugs...you may wake up one morning with two heads. Quite a few people will be tempted to pick the Sharks on Monday night, but I doubt many of those people watched them lose to the Tigers last weekend. Goodness gracious what a game of crapball that was.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 2

Result - Rabbitohs 18 defeated Sharks 0

Hi all
Ah the origin bye rounds. Lots of second tier players looking to make a point. Makes for very interesting games,
No one will have a bigger point to prove than Pearce & Maloney especially against the club that took their spots.
Roosters (by plenty)
Warriors (the Kiwis nearly got the Dogs last week)
Broncos ( toss of the coin here Barba to shine)
Raiders ( Ricky "mini-bus" Stuart...... why "mini-bus" you ask? Only half a coach!! can't afford any more fines)
Rabbits ( Understrength Sharks an easybeat)
You and I agree this week Mr Thinker and thanks again for this site where we rugby league fans have a little fun!
p.s. When will you do your Origin summary?

unlucky tipper's picture

Roosters - Pearce and Maloney to carve up the doggies
Warriors - Titans have to many injuries
Tigers - When in doubt go the home team
Raiders - Cowboys away record is awful
South's - Should bounce back after their lost last round
Qld - Want to tip my team but I'm trying to tip a perfect round this week

Good luck with all your tips this week fellas

Here are my tips

Roosters by 4 I have tip Bulldogs every single game on their streak but now I think they will stop

Warriors by 6 I think Titans still have a lot of players out here

Broncos by 6 I think they will get back to back win here

Raiders by 2 as much as I hate to do this I am tipping against the Cowboys

Rabbitohs by 2 I think South Sydney to win due to Sharks injury problems

Queensland by 8 Go QLD I think it will be 9 in a row for them

Guru Craig's picture

Roosters - Playboy Pearce and Co may find this game harder to win than they think. Canterbury are not a real big play making side, rather Des, uses his forwards led by the man we (used?) to love to hate. Ennis would be in a Blue jersey if The Guru had any interest in Cockroaches, thankfully The 'G' household has plenty of Mortein and complete Maroon blindness, haven't seen a roach in 8 years! no matter, The Chooks should win.

NZW - last week the Titans barely touched the ball in the second half and pushed a strong on paper Brisbane side all the way to the siren. Neil Henry is doing a decent job with the players available and all things considered The Titans can beat NZ, but they won't. The creativity required to score 20pts isn't available and that's what it'll take at a minimum to win this, S Johnson will shine and NZ will win.

Tigers - The Bronco's are now 26yrs old, far too old to be so flat. Now in the modern world that's not supposed to matter right? Wrong! This little filly's assets could use some manipulation, she used to have curves in all the right places and a front row that could stop a bus. Last week with a bit over 31k people, The Guru and Mrs included had a conversation, more than one in fact, now that's not so odd, but in row 6 at Suncorp...she used to cause men and boys alike to lose all decorum with whistles and cheers as she strutted her stuff. The once elegant beauty was reduced to awkwardness with a bit of a wardrobe malfunction (not in the good way) until finally taking it with her classy centre. She'll have to do something special because on Saturday at Leichhardt they'll be doing it 'Like a Tiger'.

Canberra - The Guru has lived in TSV, great place, grew up just over the Magnetic waters in the warm northern capital. Canberra however is nothing like that, it's full of cold nasty pollies and the weather's not so great either. Granted Sunday afternoon wont be that bad, but The Guru thinks the Cows will miss JT and Co's heat.

Souths - Monday is the sort of day blokes working at banks long for, that terrible morning train ride full of smelly teenagers is nothing but joy to the men who love calculators and decimal points, more than anything else they get a rush when it all adds up, neatness is key. The Guru can not see a way the Bunnies lose here. Guru's Gold tip of the round, look for blue under the collars of plenty of Bunnies, even Sammy gets excited about Origin. (also look for cryptic clues and hidden meanings, unless you work for the NSA, in which case bugger off)

newbie from perth's picture

Hi everyone,

Not a good start last week with both my Friday night picks going down. D’oh! Then my beloved Chooks got well and truly plucked! Double D’oh! Managed to get the rest of the round correct so the Newbie is sort of happy he got 5 from 8. If he can get another 5 this week he’ll get a perfect score! Then again, if I do then I’m pretty sure it will be because, on paper, it looks like a fairly obvious weekend of games this week. But wait, who’s to say the football gods won’t throw something weird our way? You never know with this beautiful game. OK, onto this week’s tips…

Roosters - it’s Friday night and it’s cold in Perth. Newbie will sit back with his hot chocolate and watch his boys win this one. Hopefully, MP and JM might just see this as an opportunity to send a subtle message to young Laurie about you-know-what. As they say … “you can’t buy class, just keep the faith”. Hmm, I think my annual visit to the shrink must be due very soon (ha-ha).

Warriors - the Titans have too many guys out. Looks like the NZers should get this one. As Johnny Ray says ... "Go Warriors. Peow! Peow!"

Tigers - Broncos have quality players missing this game in readiness for the SOO so Newbie has to go the Tigers here.

Raiders - after the serve I dished out last week to Ricky, it might seem strange I’m tipping the Green Machine. Oh well, these “lucky breaks” come along every now and then I reckon the Raiders need to capitalise on some serious Cowboy talent being away this weekend. If they can’t then I’ll revert to last week’s thinking. C’mon Ricky, prove me wrong!

Rabbits - no GI Joe, no worries. Just can’t see how the Sharkies can win here. The Bunnies should, in theory, have too much class for their opposition and should win easily, albeit by maybe half a dozen or so. We’ll see eh?

P.S. Qld to win SOO - I never worry about form really. I always pick the Maroons to win. Why would a “newbie from perth” go for the Queenslanders? Purely and solely because of what the Big V used to do to WA in that “other code” way back in the day when they had “state games”. We were always the underdogs and got beaten on a regular basis. I seem to remember it happened to Qld as well on occasions. When the time came for the Newbie to choose sides, he immediately connected at a “certain level” with the Maroon “underdogs” and has been there ever since. So, having bored you with that pointless little story, all I have to say is “Queenslander! Queenslander! Queenslander!” Ah, fond memories of that great all-in brawl many moons ago when one of the boys yelled that out in one of the games. Happy days indeed…

OK people, good luck with your tipping this week and good luck to your team as well. Cheers.

Here we go again
Roosters - watch this space, the halves are going to fire up
Warriors - Titans are injury +
Broncos - Tigers are lost without their gun
Cowboys - even without their guns are too good for Raiders
Bunnies - Sharky's are in for a flogging
And of course - QLD to win

The Animal's picture

Hola All,

This is definitely my favourite time of year. Origin!! I'll cop some stick for it, but so hoping to see the blues win this year. Or at least next year. Anything to stop QLD getting 10 in a row ... (even after living in QLD for some years, I'm clearly still a die hard blues fan ... not sure why.)

Anywho, to the tips -

Roosters
Warriors
Tigers
Raiders
Rabbits

UP THE (not so mighty) BLUES!!!

Steel Panther's picture

After pulling myself out of a form slump over the past few weeks I ended up back in the mire last week. Close but no cigar with a few of the games. Sharks lost by two, Warriors by four and Raiders by six. If those games had of gone the other way I'd have been laughing!

Roosters - Origin defections have robbed us of what would have been a better game.

Warriors - Too many injuries to the Titans points me to the Warriors but when it comes to tipping the Warriors logic goes out the window.

Tigers- Tossed a coin but I'm with the Guru here. Can't ignore the Broncos record at Campbelltown but fresher in my mind is how woeful they were last weekend against a weak Titans side.

Raiders - Only because of how depleted the Cowboys are.

Rabbitohs - The Sharks have no Gallen and too many off field issues. Plus they have Jeff Robson!!

Howdy all, I'm new here. I stumbled across this page in search for different opinions on each round's NRL games. It's great reading everyone's tips, and usually most have interesting decisions behind each tip. Anyways, here are my tips, and good luck everyone for Round 11!

- Roosters over Bulldogs
- Warriors over Titans
- Broncos over Tigers
- Raiders over Cowboys
- Rabbitohs over Sharks

P.S. The Thinker, where do you find The King's tips? I remember seeing them on T.V. when I was younger, though I cannot recall where abouts exactly.

Thanks! Happy Tipping!

I hate the Cowboys losing but at least I got the tip right

RexV's picture

Bloody Cowboys - how wowfull was that performance, even with the origin boys out the blokes filling the shoes didnt step up at all, actually it was a pretty poor performance overall. This is one thing that this team needs to get their heads around when loosing players to Origin, otherwise they are going to have a very hard time winning a premiership.

mark ashford's picture

Hey RexV I think you are being a bit tough on the Cowboys mate. they had their top 4 players out for origin and their next two best (arguably) out injured. Take the top 6 out of any club and they'll struggle.
If they can stay injury free the Cowboys will definitely feature in the finals this year.
