Round nine selections

Sydney Roosters vs Wests Tigers – Friday night – Allianz Stadium

I had a dream last night that injured Tigers skipper Robbie Farah sent me a text message. The message included a motivational quote he was rather fond of. I recall reading the quote and thought it quite profound. Sadly I can no longer recall the quote. Even more sadly I checked my phone and, you guessed it, no text message from Robbie. In any case I had just about convinced myself that this dream was an omen, and that I should tip the Tigers this weekend no matter what. Then I noticed they're playing at a venue they don't like against a team they don't beat very often. Omen Schmomen! A few of these Roosters with hyphens in their names will be up for big games after being omitted from the Kiwi team, and the Pearce/Maloney combination wouldn't mind showing those up-and-coming playmakers from the Tigers a thing or two.

Verdict – Roosters by 10

Result - Roosters 30 defeated Tigers 6

North Queensland Cowboys vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

Pop quiz everyone. Name the two players that have scored the most tries (five each) for the Broncos this season? No peaking. Those who said Ben Hunt and Matt Gillett get detention for peaking. Here's another statistic that surprises - one of these teams has a 75% win rate at this venue, and it's not the Cowboys. In fact, if the Broncos win this the Cowboys win record at home is exactly 50%. The forwards battle wins this game, and although the Cowboys look better on paper I can't doubt the heart of any of the Broncos pack. Like Packer and Gyngell I'm finding it difficult to split these two, but I'll take the Broncos. Settle in folks, this looks like a fine way to while away a couple of hours on Friday night.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result - Cowboys 27 defeated Broncos 14

New Zealand Warriors vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday afternoon – Eden Park

Rampaging Warriors centre Konrad Hurrell is under the microscope this week for participating in (and probably enjoying) a consensual sex act with a woman he's in a relationship with. It's about time we started clamping down on all this funny business. Next time he starts thinking such unsavoury thoughts, he should make the same choice as our wiser, wealthier and classier superiors - grow a scruffy beard, take off his shoes, put on his trackie dacks and beat her up in the street. After all, one sex act can kill. I have digressed. Hopefully there isn't too much sex or violence at Eden Park on Saturday afternoon. As we all know the Warriors don't have a lot of luck at Eden Park but it's time they broke the hoodoo. I expect some of those Warriors to come back from representative duty with a spring in their step and a little bit of confidence. Two of the more baffling sides in the competition facing off here so anything is possible. I'm not ruling out a draw.

Verdict – Warriors by 2

Result - Warriors 54 defeated Raiders 12

Gold Coast Titans vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Saturday night - CBus Super Stadium

I'm pleased to see Matt Srama back for the Titans this week - easily my favourite Phillipino/Polish rugby league player going around. The Titans are having a very good year but they haven't beaten the Bunnies since 2010 and there are signs the Rabbitohs are getting back to their very best. In what is sure to be a close game I'll punt on Greg Inglis and the kicking game of Adam Reynolds to make the difference.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 2

Result - Rabbitohs 40 defeated Titans 18

Melbourne Storm vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday night – AAMI Park

One of the great modern-day rivalries in Australian sport, and the home team get an opportunity to show everyone (including themselves) that the Storm empire hasn't crumbled just yet. The more sensible among you will stick with the Sea Eagles and with good reason, but with Jamie Lyon and Keiran Foran unavailable I think the Storm can get their season back on course. If they can't get their noses into the top eight before the first State of Origin game the mountain may be a touch steep for the purple machine. They must win, and I think they will win.

Verdict – Storm by 2

Result - Storm 22 defeated Sea Eagles 19

Newcastle Knights vs Penrith Panthers – Sunday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

I don't get to say this very often, but I like the look of the Knights this weekend. Willie Mason isn't there but it's the closest they've looked to full-strength for quite some time. Their bench looks particularly useful, with a great blend of strength, experience and versatility. Penrith disposed of the Knights pretty swiftly back in round one, but Sunday afternoons at the Hunter bring out the best in the Novacastrians. The more I look at this contest the more I like it as a contest, and this could surprise as one of the better games this weekend. Try to keep an eye on it.

Verdict – Knights by 4

Result - Panthers 32 defeated Knights 10

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

It's a nice touch that the Morris twins get to play against each other on Mothers Day. As for the rest of these twin-less no-hopers going around on Sunday afternoon well....at least your Mums will always love you. First plays ninth and there should be a pretty decent crowd on hand for this one. I'll stick with the table-topping Doggies who appear to have an edge in the forwards, and a goal-kicker who couldn't miss if he tried.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 4

Result - Bulldogs 38 defeated Dragons 6

Parramatta Eels vs Cronulla Sharks – Monday night – Pirtek Stadium

This tipping site is now in its third year and you could (probably) count the number of times I've tipped the Eels on one hand. I think it's time I gave them a little bit of love, but I don't want to get carried away. Some sections of the media are calling the Eels the fairytale story in the NRL, but they are 11th on the ladder. That said, they are finally starting to look like a balanced team on paper. A very promising number nine, creative halves, a dynamo at the back and some flashy finishers in the backline. They're 11th, but they're a pretty good 11th. Their fairytale is a much better read than the nightmare that is the ASADA Sharks. Eight weeks down and still running last - with a team most had pencilled in for the top four. Scary stuff.

Verdict – Eels by 4

Result - Eels 42 defeated Sharks 24

Who had Cronulla Pencilled in as a top 4 side?!

The Thinker's picture

Greetings Danny,
Quite a few people believe it or not. I jot down premiership markets at the start of the season, mainly because it is incredible how wrong they are most seasons (if you had a punt on a Roosters/Sea Eagles grand final in 2013 you could have retired by now).

The market I kept had the Sharks equal third favourite in betting with the Sea Eagles and the Storm (and behind the Roosters and Rabbitohs).

All the best

Hi everyone,

Great Test Match last week. Loved the Haka and the enthusiasm the Kiwis showed in the first half. The cream rose to the top in the second half, although nothing too flash. Very entertaining. Anyway onto this week’s games…

Roosters - hoping we’ll move up to 4th on the ladder after this weekend.

Cowboys - after watching JT in last week’s Test and being at home, the Newbie has to go the Cowboys. Yee-hah!

Warriors - points difference (-47) versus (-54) but will defer to the wisdom of the Great One and go the Warriors.

Rabbits - got a feeling Souths might be just a wee bit too strong for the GC.

Manly - yeah I know they have some injury worries (the Stormers do too don't they?) but the Newbie is tipping the boys from Brookie. Storm Troopers have won 4 with points differential (-24) whereas Manly have won 6 with a points differential of (+58). That may be flawed, dare I say “newbie” thinking, but it’s good enough for me.

Knights - methinks the Knights are getting a bit desperate and may just get in over the line in this one.

Doggies - what can I say? The Doggies keep getting the job done. 1st versus 9th.

Eels - playing at home (where I’m led to believe they haven’t lost so far this year) and the Sharkies without the Todd-meister and the Newbie likes the slippery ones.

To my friend a:
Sorry a but because I hail from Perth, I’m 2 hours behind you guys in the East and by the time I finish work and get myself down to the place that starts with a “W” to buy my weekly provisions and get home, it’s a bit late in the day. But as The Joker said, you still have all of tomorrow to make your final tips. Wouldn’t count too much on my tips my friend, you guys live and breathe footy over there. All we get here is mostly news and coverage of the aerial ping-pong! Don’t worry too much a, you’re still doing alright in the tipping. Cheers.

OK people, good luck with your tipping this week and good luck to your team as well. Cheers.

Guru Craig's picture

Roosters- Are apparently equal fav's for the premiership...The Guru must have missed the part where the Chooks won 3-4 on the trot and found some consistency...Still, they should comfortably cover the Tigers, who are being found out, finally. Sorry Mick. Syd 13+

Cowboys- Hard game to tip, The Guru honestly believes these two sides are fairly close at the moment, NQ has the superior kicking game, attacking options and experience. Bris have commitment, leg speed, ball speed and overall, their pack will give more effort, they always do. The Cowboys though will win because they have more points and better line defence. NQ 1-12

Warriors- NZ are way over due to win here. Canberra may decide to recover some pride from last round, but the Guru is betting the week off has mellowed any thoughts of that, a nice little holiday in NZ mid-season after an easy week sounds bad for Ricky's raiders...but a great script idea for Ricks new show 'The Coach', next week the boys dig deep after Rick breaks down during training, they lift edge out the Pennies. NZ @ the line or better.

Rabbitohs- The Greg Inglis, Sam Burgess, Adam Reynolds, South Sydney Rabbithos bought to you by Rusty inc and Maguire enterprises will win this game, take a breath...Souths got away with a win over Brisbane. The Guru was sitting about 20 yards away and 60 yards up in the air, right in front of The Squirrel as he coughed that ball up as cold as the PMs heart. Maguire can see the great bird enemy in the East is struggling to fly and the other bird by the Sea has half the cap injured, the Purple pretenders aren’t getting it done and north of the Border have got more problems than answers...he's thinking the same as the Guru is thinking, they might just sneak 2014.

Storm- The Guru was gonna clean up on this game, make a couple of doulbe payments, take the Mrs to a fancy chook show...bu then as the musical genius of Poison says, every 'Lion has it Foran', neither of which is supposed to be playing, some doubt over Chery-Pie as well, though that may just be a bit of ruse topping. Manly will make Melbourne win this game, The Guru still isnt convinced The Storm can win this. Mel by 1

Knights- Wayne needs his win quota bumped, encase they find Tiny's wallet one day. Newcastle are due a win and this game is tailored for it, Sunday afternoon at home, the old boys in the stands with a ripper party planned for after, the Coal city will be powered up till dawn, lock up your waitresses and break out the RBTs. NEW prob 13+

Bulldogs- StBenji are due a win and The Guru would like to do as Barry does and tip the Penfolds, but He just doesnt think they're good enough. Hasler's Dogs are on a stellar winning streak that must be driving the bookies to more of O'farrels fancy, its gotta end soon, just not this week. Dogs 1-12

Eels- Electric is what the fans want Brad, keep the ball flowing and keep the wins coming. Forget about that boring old board, all yesterdays men grasping to hold onto whatever they can. Bench the lot, or preferably trade'em to a nice old folks home, out in the countryside, wherever the current governments hiding their former PM will do nicely, don’t see him about much. See if they have a spot for ol Tone, he'll be there soon enough.

Guru Craig's picture

Almost forgot, The Guru's Gold tip of the week in a first ever special is a combo, Syd & Sth. also a shout out to James 'Wacker' Packer, looks as though he could give you a good 30 seconds in the front row and Gingey looks as though he'd run a mean water bottle, to the half way at least.

Sorry for the late tips people, The Guru has a differing schedule and sometimes it takes the right moment to get the 'feel' for the round. Big props to 'The Thinker' as he has his tips in first, there must be a scale of sorts to this because the more info and closer to kick off you get the better your chances if cash is of importance, The Guru has his twitter running during games if time permits and the tips there are live as is the colourful commentary.

Steel Panther's picture

After a "closer than I thought" test match it's back to the weekly grind of trying to pick a winner each week something I admit that has been a bit of a struggle for me this season.

Roosters - Right across the park the Chooks look stronger. Look for my MOTM from last weeks Test Sam Moa to carry that form into this game and for JWH to make a statement. The Tigers lose a few teeth without Robbie Farah.

Cowboys - I just think it's about time the Cowboys started to stand up or before we know it they'll be playing catch up again late in the season. Maybe the Hannant situation could play a part too? Any oil on that Guru?

Warriors - Well if nothing else we know that Konrad Hurrell knows how to get up for the occasion. This Saturday I hope it will be for a crucial footy match which could make or break the Warriors season. Against a team that was flogged a fortnight ago the Raiders are good opponents for the Warriors to break their Eden Park hoodoo. That said I'm tipping the Warriors with absolutely no confidence. Where's Johnny Ray when we need him?

Rabbitohs - I'm expecting to see what we see with the Gold Coast every year. They start to fade away after good early season form. Bunnies look too strong even with Merritt in NSW Cup.

Storm- The once invincible are no longer just that. Usually by this time of the season the Storm have more points in the bag before Origin starts but not this year. They'll need to bank two points in this game and no Lyon or Foran for Manly sees me leaning towards Melbourne.

Knights - But isn't it Penrith's turn to win this weekend? That W-L-W sequence has to end sometime and that time is now.

Bulldogs - The Dogs are on a roll and it will take more than the Dragons to halt their momentum. Again too strong across the park and as the Thinker said they have a goal kicker who makes Hasem El-Masri look bad.

Sharks - Here's my roughie of the week. Yea I know the Eels have a good home record but as my good mate says games are won up front and this is where I think the Sharks have the edge. With Gallen back it's like they have two extra (80 minute) men in the pack.

Good luck to everyone....

RexV's picture

I thought I might have a stab
Roosters- Tigers have too many injuries
Cowboys - Only because home ground advantage
Warriors - Raiders hmmm
Rabittohs - Should be a great game
Storm - Too many changes in Manly side
Panthers - Knights wont match it in the halves
Dogs - Dragons went too quick out of the blocks
Eels - Sharks not quick enough to match the Eels
But the way I am tipping this year - I should probably tip the complete opposite and do better
Cheers everyone

Hello everyone,

Okaaaaaay then....I've deleted quite a few comments today, some a little more heated than necessary.

Clearly the Packer/Gyngell fight has fired everyone up.

I hope Johnny Ray turns up with his tips as much as the rest of you do - the guy is a bit of a freak and he's pretty darn entertaining to boot but....

Johnny Ray, and anyone else for that matter, can post their tips if and when they want.

This is a free site, and you're all free to share your thoughts and tips, but lets try and keep it fun and friendly.

Hopefully all is okay with Johnny Ray, and we'll hear from him soon.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Need those Bunnies to get home and take away the pain of JTs 1 pt, The Guru had Syd 13+ and NQ1-12 in a nice little combo, a nothing loss but odds were very juicy.

Syd, NZ and Sths 3 way looking ok at 22-0 to the Rabbits.

To answer a Q from Friday, The Guru believe Hook an Co must be folling this page, and rightly so...Hannant is having a little rest to inspire some of what The Guru has been calling for, after all Ben is a great bloke but not the fiercest guy getting round an NRL paddock, that and a bit of extra pudding need to be worked on and he'll be back on deck.
