Sydney Roosters vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday night – Allianz Stadium
The Chooks are chasing their seventh successive victory and are giving every indication they're near their best for a tilt at the title. In their last three outings they've conceded just 12 points (while scoring 81) and it's reminiscent of their 2013 season. This is their toughest opponent in some time but I still doubt the attacking capabilities of their Bulldogs halves. The Roosters aren't exactly leaking points at the moment and I can't see the Bulldogs playmakers tearing them apart. Close in the first half, but the red, white and bluesters will run away with the game when its there to be won.
Verdict – Roosters by 16
Result - Roosters 38 defeated Bulldogs 28
Wests Tigers vs Melbourne Storm – Friday night – Leichhardt Oval
The Tigers would love to win at least once at Leichhardt Oval this season, but they're terrible. Robbie Farah returns and he'll be keener than any of them, but they're terrible. Given the movements in the NRL coaching ranks, Jason Taylor would love his side to notch up a win too, but they're terrible. Storm surely. Tigers terrible.
Verdict – Storm by 13
Result - Tigers 34 defeated Storm 16
New Zealand Warriors vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium
Sharks fans are getting excited, and I suppose that is their right. At the risk of dousing their enthusiasm a little, I will mention that the five teams above them on the ladder all won last week...and won convincingly. They couldn't time their trip across the Tasman much better, what with the season-ending injury to Shaun Johnson. That all but ends the Warriors finals hopes, but I think they'll deflate slowly rather than pop in an instant. They've had a week to come to terms with the new normal, and I think they'll be desperate to show us they aren't a one-pony trick. The absence of Fifita for the Sharks, and the rub of the green at home, gives the Warriors enough of an edge in the forwards. They don't win a lot of games the hard and boring way, and their opponent does that better than just about anyone, but not this time.
Verdict – Warriors by 2
Result - Sharks 18 defeated Warriors 14
North Queensland Cowboys vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium
Probably the game of the round, and the last time these sides met was one of the games of the season. An 80th minute field goal to Jonathan Thurston proved the difference in round 15, but there's a few important things to remember about that game. The Raiders were at home, coming off a bye and close to full strength. Matt Scott, James Tamou and Jonathan Thurston were backing up 4 days after an Origin match, and Michael Morgan was a late withdrawal. Another fairly quick turnaround for all the Cowboys this weekend but at least they got to stay in their (allegedly controversial) homes.
Verdict – Cowboys by 10
Result - Cowboys 32 defeated Raiders 24
Manly Sea Eagles vs Brisbane Broncos – Saturday night – Central Coast Stadium
To be at the top of the table you need to win games away from home, and the Broncos have done just that (7 from 9). At home in recent times they've been nigh on unstopabble, racking up 164 points in their last four home games while conceding just 48. The wins away from Lang Park have been tighter (with an average winning margin of less than 8), but the wins keep on coming. Their last loss was way back in round ten - to the Cowboys in Townsville. Manly pulled out one of their typical backs-to-the-wall victories last weekend, but it wasn't enough to save the coach. Can they dig deep and find again? I doubt it. The neutral venue doesn't help either. The last time these sides met the Broncos won 44-10. It will be closer. Slightly closer.
Verdict – Broncos by 22
Result - Sea Eagles 44 defeated Broncos 14
St George Illawarra Dragons vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – Jubilee Oval
How much do the Dragons like their coach Paul McGregor? I say the answer is 'lots', and I'm hoping they'll show it this weekend. I'm sure the Knights like Danny Buderus, but I doubt that's enough. In round 19 the Rabbits beat the Dragons by 16, and in round 20 the Rabbitohs beat the Knights by 46. That's all I need to hear.
Verdict – Dragons by 8
Result - Dragons 46 defeated Knights 24
South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Penrith Panthers – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium
The last time the Panthers won a game was in round 17...against the Rabbitohs. Oddly enough that was the last game the Rabbitohs didn't win. Since then the Bunnies have scored 76 points and conceded just 14. And since then the Panthers have scored 38 points and conceded 110. Momentum is everything in this game, and right now the Bunnies have plenty of it while the Panthers look like they're pushing a medicine ball up a hill with the tip of a billiard cue.
Verdict – Rabbitohs by 20
Result = Rabbitohs 20 defeated Panthers 16
Gold Coast Titans vs Parramatta Eels – Monday night – CBus Super Stadium
Parramatta are in Queensland for successive Monday night fixtures, but this should be closer than their last effort. Taking a team to the Gold Coast at this time of the year is risky when your side aren't in finals contention. For some, it ends up being a Mad Monday warm-up, and the Eels look like the sort of side that could do something that silly. The Titans on the other hand, will pencil this game in as one to win if they want to avoid the wooden spoon. The duck egg against the Broncos doesn't look great, but they had their competitive moments in that game, and if they can sustain that level for most of the 80 minutes that's good enough to beat the Eels. To the Titans fans that head out to the game on Monday night - I salute you.
Verdict – Titans by 2
Result - Titans 24 defeated Eels 14

One more day to process my grief and it says this - before the Adam Goodes dramas, and now after, nothing has actually changed. The nation's level of tolerance didn't change overnight. People have their own opinions about race, and I doubt whichever side of the fence you are on, that the last week made you swap sides any. Nothing has actually changed. It still hurts to know that people have that attitude to others but I need to realise that they thought that long before this week, and will do for more than another few. Not booing turns it into a silent underbelly, but it was silent beforehand too. A 13 year old let it out of the bag, but I guess it's like a bad disease, would you rather know or not know. Maybe she should be praised for bringing it all out into the open.
..So anyway ... Sharks hit the magic 10 to be only the 4th team to do so, Souths on 9 and can get to 10 this week, Dragons on 8 but will get to 10 with a win this week. As mentioned last week, the last 5 times the Sharks got to 10 or better, they made it to a Prelim each time, and once to a Grand Final. I'm guessing bookies don't read this page, so I'm sure they have plenty of teams still in front of the Sharkies.
They still need to catch Roosters on 12 for the top 3 streak teams. Hard to think the Sharks will beat Cowboys & Knights beat Roosters, but then this weeks results didn't exactly go to plan did they?
PS - JR I'm definitely worried. I said I loved you but I lied?! Isn't that what you say just after you've slept with someone and just before you make a break for it? Footy Chick, back me up on this one will ya.

..and Greg Inglis still lies down until the whistle blows, and noone boos him. He's everyone's hero. Pretty clear they were booing an invisible spear, and remember he only shook that invisible spear, he didn't throw an invisible spear.

YES now COACH is REALLY back!
My last word on this matter.
As Australians we should all work very hard to stop this nonsense.
If you really want a change call out these lowlifes, show you don't agree.
Shame them and make them look small.
C'mon Aussie surely we are just as proud of our Indigenous sportsmen as anyone else.
Your words Coach have opened my eyes.
Cheers Mate

No worries Mark. The media's got a lot to answer for. Whatever it takes to buy a newspaper, or turn on the evening news knows no depths. It's not wrong to base your opinions, your views on what the media feeds us. Problem is they only feed us what they want us to hear. Can you think back to your school years and remember the lessons about the stolen generation? No you say? Very convenient huh? Feed us what they want to feed us. Hide what they don't want us to know.
Wondering why Abbott's payments to people smuggler's is not getting any air time. Oh yeah. They just don't want us to know.

..and broadening my streak theory to share with the AFL race, here is what their streak table looks like
Fremantle 14
West Coast 12
Sydney 11
Hawthorn 8
Richmond 8
Wstn Bulldogs 8
Geelong 7
Port Adelaide 7
GWS 7
Collingwood 7
Nth Melbourne 6
Adelaide 6
Carlton 2
Brisbane 2
Essendon 2
Melbourne 0
St Kilda 0
Gold Coast 0
And the real table
Fremantle 60
West Coast 54
Hawthorn 48
Sydney 48
Wstn Bulldogs 44
Richmond 44
Nth Melbourne 40
Geelong 38
Adelaide 38
GWS 36
Collingwood 32
Port Adelaide 32
St Kilda 24
Melbourne 24
Essendon 20
Carlton 12
Gold Coast 10
Brisbane 8
With Sydney already with 11 in the bag, and 3 clear of the next on 8, they secretly look assured of a top 4 spot, even though the real table says they aren't assured of anything. Rest up for a home final Goodes

I wonder when Adam Goodes will come back

Evening football fans,
The tipping ladder has been updated - Scott M is the stand-alone leader with a fair pack of challengers on his heels.
Top score for the round was 6/8 - most people struggled to find the Tigers or the Sea Eagles.
I'll have previews and selections for round 22 published sometime on Wednesday.
All the best
p.s. racism is pretty stupid

If he is waiting for a united nation to welcome him back as one, he won't ever play again. If he is waiting for the AFL world to welcome him back, the wait is already over.

Coach, or anyone else that might know; is there any betting agencies offering odds for teams to make preliminary finals/grand finals? I'd be somewhat confident in the sharkies getting to the prelim even without your stat
Submitted by a on
I not sure if Goodes will be playing again
Submitted by Coach Potato on
Yes but will check later in the week. Silly TAB don't open lots of markets until Wednesday after the team lists come out. They currently have premiership $17 and top 4 $3.50 but curiously a quick scan of other bookies are offering double for these ones. Will check tomorrow. Will be good because of the stats wouldn't it? Do you like the stat Scott M ? Cazza ?

I think Goodes should just play on his own home ground

Why is that 'a' ? Your a man of few words but quite often those few words don't make much sense in my opinion.

Panthers wont be there in September. That's ok. I just their game against Souths and also the Dogs game against Sydney isn't an insight into the bullshit they we will be fed and made to swallow under the auspice of impartial refereeing.
Submitted by Coach Potato on
.oops left out a word! .... *just (hope) their game against Souths...
Submitted by a on
Why don't tthey make sense for Coach?
Submitted by Coach Potato on
Why should Goodes stay away from the other teams home grounds? He's part of the team. He's one of their best players. Why should the team suffer just because red neck Australia comes to watch?
Submitted by Coach Potato on
Panthers have never lost in Darwin, 3 wins and a draw. Oh well, first time for everything.

What I meant was he should just do a war dance I front of his own fans cause they will cheer
Submitted by Coach Potato on
No. Nothing to teach his own fans about tolerance.

My solution, run a TV ad to kick off the 2016 season. Have all 70+ indigenous players involved. Each wearing their own team colours, all doing an aboriginal style Haka as one. Hopefully 18 teams with at least one player involved. 18 teams united as one.
