Round twenty three selections

Gold Coast Titans vs Melbourne Storm – Thursday night – Cbus Super Stadium

The Titans are clinging to 8th spot on the ladder, with five teams sitting just below them desperate to take their place in the finals. It's not a great time to lose your star fullback (Brimson) with a fractured jaw, and it's not a great time to take on the title holders and premiership favourites. To make that challenge more difficult, the Storm can claim a 19th win in a row on Thursday night, putting them alongside the ridiculously good Roosters side of 1975. I doubt the Storm will be focusing on that much, but we should be giving them some due. Last year their captain retired, arguably the most influential player in the game. They lost two of their first three games this season, and they haven't lost since. They've been living away from home since round eight. Now I'm just the biggest mind in rugby league so my opinion doesn't count for much, but in my opinion this is the most professional sporting team in this country...with a gap to second. On Thursday night the Storm will be missing/resting Asofa-Solomona, Finucane, Kamikamica, Smith, Hughes, Olam and Jennings. They'll still win.

Verdict – Storm by 8

Result – Storm 34 defeated Titans 20

Canberra Raiders vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

Tom Trbojevic and Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad are surprise starters on Friday night. Nicoll-Klokstad has returned early after we expected his season was over, and Turbo tells us that the fractured metal plate in his face is perfectly fine. You know it's a tough game when you're breaking titanium. Brad Parker, or Hank Scorpio if you're a Simpsons fan, is resting his skull this week, while the Raiders have lost some key players in Croker, Starling and Harawira-Naera. The Raiders pushed the Storm last week so you have to give them a chance in this, but those missing three are key players for the Green Machine. Given the scintillating form the Sea Eagles are in of late, I have to stick with them.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4

Result – Sea Eagles 19 defeated Raiders 18

Penrith Panthers vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

Second plays third and I think we would mostly agree that this is the match of the round. The Bunnies have been in red hot form, but I'm tipping the Panthers for two main reasons:

  1. The Panthers have four big inclusions for this game - Koroisau, Fisher-Harris, Capewell and Pengai Jnr (who can be rocks and diamonds...but I'm expecting a big game)
  2. When these sides met in round 11, the Panthers won 56-12. The Panthers side on Friday night looks stronger than the Panthers side from round 11.

Verdict – Panthers by 8

Result – Panthers 25 defeated Rabbitohs 12

Wests Tigers vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday afternoon – Browne Park, Rockhampton

The Tigers have been training about 200 metres from Thinker Manor while they've been in Brisbane, and it's been great to see them going through their paces. They were actually training this morning...and looked sharp. They're currently in 13th place and still in contention for a finals berth, but it won't be easy. They will certainly need to beat the tenth placed Sharks or their season is over. Mind you, if the Sharks lose their season is over too, so much to play for here. The Sharks have a very good recent record over the Tigers but the only team they have beaten in the last five weeks is the Bulldogs. Meanwhile the Tigers have won three of their last five and, as mentioned earlier, look sharp at training. Tamou has been named to return which is a big help, while the Sharks have lost two big men in Tolman and Fifita which makes their pack a little more manageable.

Verdict – Tigers by 4

Result – Sharks 50 defeated Tigers 20

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium

Sadly for the Bulldogs, it is effectively impossible for them to avoid the wooden spoon this season. They'll need to find some other way to motivate themselves. Perhaps as individuals they can show their coach they deserve to be a part of the Bulldogs in the future. Perhaps knocking off a team that is fighting for a finals berth is a motivating factor. I'm not sure that's enough and, even if it were, they may not be good enough anyway. There are only three teams in the NRL with a worse points differential than the Knights - it would be in their interest to rack up a score here and improve that situation.

Verdict – Knights by 16

Result – Knights 22 defeated Bulldogs 16

Parramatta Eels vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium

Like the Bulldogs, the Cowboys don't have much to motivate them either. They're far enough away from last to avoid the wooden spoon, but can't make the top eight. They have little to play for, and it shows - this could be their tenth loss in a row. The Eels aren't going that badly, but they're clearly not going well. They need to pick up a win at some point before the finals series, just to give them an ounce of confidence. Right now everyone is doubting the Eels. If they lose this, they'll be doubting themselves. I expect they'll get away with the win here, but it won't be pretty, and I can't see it resurrecting their season.

Verdict – Eels by 7

Result – Eels 32 defeated Cowboys 16

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Sydney Roosters – Sunday afternoon – Clive Berghofer Stadium, Toowoomba

The Chooks found a way to win and frustrate yours truly with a one point victory over the Broncos last week. By doing so they have found themselves back in the top four, an astonishing effort given the players they have missing. Tedesco appeared to split his lip in the first minute of that game, then spent the next 80 minutes bleeding everywhere and terrorising the Broncos with his constant involvement and pace. He takes involvement to a whole other level. He could just about beat the Dragons on his own, but he also has a rested Jared Waerea-Hargreaves returning up front. Losing Victor Radley for three weeks is a massive blow for the Chooks, especially Crichton currently unavailable, but the Chooks have proven they can find a way to win regardless of the players available. As for the Dragons...they've proven they can find a way to lose.

Verdict – Roosters by 4

Result – Roosters 40 defeated Dragons 22

Brisbane Broncos vs New Zealand Warriors – Sunday afternoon – Suncorp Stadium

The Warriors have three winnable games to play in the regular season, and if they win all three they could find themselves in the top eight. The Broncos are without Tyson Gamble in this and they'll miss his enthusiasm and kicking game. On top of that there are some doubts over Kelly, Levi and Farnworth. That's a lot of potential changes in key positions and the disruption could prove costly. The Warriors, off the back of three successive wins, are looking pretty good, and they'll have plenty of support in the crowd on Sunday afternoon too.

Verdict – Warriors by 2

Result – Broncos 24 defeated Warriors 22

Greetings football fans

I have updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp after round 22. I'm not even going to try and list everyone who got 8 from 8 last round - because there are too many of you. As a group....we're pretty darn good.

If anyone notices anything in the scoring that needs attention just let me know.

I will have my previews and selections for round 23 published on Wednesday. Take note that the NRL has committed to playing the rest of the regular season in Queensland.

As for the finals series and the grand final....who knows, but not Sydney.

All the best

Yes, in lockdown here for 7 days - for now. Dubbo has a lot more issues there with dreaded circulation happening.
You got the Drags & Chooks in your near neck of the woods this round.

Got to move on - have a few emails and posts to answer.

Keep well - Big Pete

"Dia duit gach duine" i dteanga ní mo theanga féin,

Again, a bit late tonight. Just tidying up a few loose ends. Been checking out safes online. Thinking about getting a fire-proof and jimmy-proof one that you bolt to the floor. I have “plans” afoot 😉.

Can’t wait for the Panthers vs. Bunnies on Friday night. Hopefully it’ll be a cracker. Panthers need to pick it up a bit and the Bunnies get to test themselves against a very good side. I’ve tipped the Panthers but would not be surprised at all if the Rabbitohs beat them. Just get the feeling the Panthers have lost a little bit of “punch” but you never know, they might just get it back Friday night if they’re seriously challenged, which I think they will be. Bring it on 💪. Let’s do this thing …

Titans vs. Storm 15-85 @ Cbus
Ladder Position = Storm
Bookies Favourite = Storm

Titans
The Titans had a pretty disappointing game last week against the Rabbitohs. They were completely dominated, so much so that they went scoreless in the first half and managed just the one try for the entire match and even that took them 65 minutes to score. Even though they started sorta OK, as the game wore on they never looked like they were going to threaten. Not enough ball, too many errors and too many missed tackles. In the end the Titans got stomped on 36-6 by the Bunnies. It was an effort I’m sure they’ll want to forget.

Possession - 44%
Completion Rate - 75% (30/40)
Line Breaks - 5
Tackle Breaks - 26
Missed Tackles - 33
Ineffective Tackles - 18
Errors - 14
Penalties Conceded - 6
Ruck Infringements - 2

Storm
Another impressive effort from the Storm last week. Went about their job in a professional and clinical manner and did what good teams do. Great contributions from the Cheese, Welch, Munster & Hynes. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 54%
Completion Rate - 82% (32/39)
Tackle Breaks - 38
Missed Tackles - 35
Ineffective Tackles - 17
Errors - 7
Penalties Conceded - 7

Verdict: Storm

Raiders vs. Manly 35-65 @ Suncorp
Ladder Position = Manly
Bookies Favourite = Manly

Raiders
The Raiders started the first half last week against the Storm well enough but soon fell away defensively. They let in 3 tries in 11 minutes which more than likely cost them the game. Rapana and Wighton tried their guts out but at half-time the Raiders were behind 20-4. Their second half effort was much, much better. They got to within 4 points at one stage but were unable to capitalise on their attacking opportunities thereafter. The Storm kicked some handy penalty goals and in the end the Raiders went down 26-16. It was definitely a missed chance from the Raiders as I thought they were good enough to win that one if not for some silly unforced errors on their part.

Possession - 46%
Completion Rate - 78% (28/36)
Tackle Breaks - 35
Missed Tackles - 38
Ineffective Tackles - 20
Errors - 8
Penalties Conceded - 7

Manly
How good were Manly last week against the Eels eh? They had a superb first half where the score was 26-4 and an even better second half which saw them run out commanding 56-10 winners. Manly scored 5 tries in the last 22 minutes but the Eels had Matterson sent off in the 62nd minute and Niukore got binned 3 minutes later. Tom Trbojevic was absolutely dazzling and had 4 try assists, 2 line breaks, 5 line break assists, scored a try himself and ran for 187 metres. And what about the kicking game from DCE. Simply a joy to behold. Look, I’m not trying to take anything away from their effort but I keep asking myself if Manly were brilliant or were the Eels shocking? Having said that though, it was, at the end of the day, a simply stunning display.

Possession - 57%
Completion Rate - 79% (34/43)
Line Breaks - 14
Tackle Breaks - 35
Missed Tackles - 13
Ineffective Tackles - 4
Errors - 9
Penalties Conceded - 5

Verdict: Manly

Panthers vs. Rabbitohs 50-50 @ Suncorp
Ladder Position = Panthers
Bookies Favourite = Panthers

Panthers
Another impressive effort from the Panthers last week. Went about their job in their usual fashion and did what good teams do. Great contributions from Cleary, Edwards and Burton. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 48%
Completion Rate - 72% (31/43)
Tackle Breaks - 35
Missed Tackles - 33
Ineffective Tackles - 16
Errors - 14

Rabbitohs
The Rabbitohs were way too good for the Titans last week. They had a 24-0 first half and went on to dominate the Titans and cruised to a 36-6 win. Just too good across the park it must be said and their attack put the Titans to the sword. I mean, what can you say? They were a class above the Titans and were never in danger of losing that one. Things are falling into place for them at the right time of the year. The only thing that “might” be a concern is their lack of utter ruthlessness. I just got the impression that once they got so far in front, they might’ve eased off a bit. I could be wrong of course but that’s just the feeling I had.

Possession - 56%
Completion Rate - 76% (34/45)
Line Breaks - 8
Tackle Breaks - 33
Missed Tackles - 26
Ineffective Tackles - 5
Errors - 12
Penalties Conceded - 4
Ruck Infringements - 4

Verdict: Panthers

Tigers vs. Sharks 45-55 @ Rockhampton
Ladder Position = Sharks
Bookies Favourite = Sharks

Tigers
It wasn’t really a convincing display in the first half from the Tigers last week against the Cowboys but thanks mainly to the efforts from Brooks and Doueihi, the Tigers went into the sheds with a 12-6 lead. In the second half the Tigers did enough damage early on to build up a match winning lead and finally got home 24-16. It was scrappy and far from convincing I’d have to say. Just like the Cowboys, the Tigers had trouble with their second half discipline and ball control. Again, if not for Brooks and Doueihi keeping things calm late in the match when the Cowboys were coming back at them, they may have lost that one.

Possession - 50%
Completion Rate - 78% (32/41)
Line Breaks - 5
Tackle Breaks - 37
Missed Tackles - 14
Ineffective Tackles - 4
Errors - 11
Penalties Conceded - 7

Sharks
After the Knights scored the quickest try of the year last week (36 seconds), the Sharks eventually worked their way back into the contest. Tries to Ramien and Mulitalo saw the Sharks head into the break leading 12-8. The Sharks had their chances in the second half but a few errors at crucial times allowed the Knights to draw level with 16 minutes to go and then they gave away a penalty with 7 minutes to go (which Clifford duly slotted) and the Sharks went down in a close one 16-14. Like a lot of close losses, you could say that the Sharks let that one slip. "I'm shattered," said Sharks coach Josh Hannay. "But one thing I said to them, the two points is critical but making yourself, your members and family proud, that's something too."

Possession - 46%
Completion Rate - 81% (34/42)
Tackle Breaks - 24
Kick Return Metres – 98 😱
Missed Tackles - 34
Ineffective Tackles - 16
Errors - 8
Penalties Conceded - 9

Verdict: Sharks

Bulldogs vs. Knights 25-75 @ Cbus
Ladder Position = Knights
Bookies Favourite = Knights

Bulldogs
Not too bad from the Bulldogs in the first half last week against the Warriors. After the Warriors scored in the 2nd minute, the Bulldogs replied 2 minutes later after an intercept try from Aaron Schoupp. The Warriors got out to a handy lead but right on the siren the Bulldogs got one back and headed into the sheds trailing 16-10. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, they remained scoreless in the second half and eventually went down 24-10. The Bulldogs fought hard though and at one stage had about 5 attacking sets in a row but weren’t able to capitalise. Too many errors and a disallowed try didn’t help their cause.

Possession - 50%
Completion Rate - 82% (31/38)
Line Breaks - 1
Tackle Breaks - 18
Missed Tackles - 33
Ineffective Tackles - 15
Errors - 9
Penalties Conceded - 9

Knights
The Knights started with a bang last week against the Sharks. Enari Tuala scored after just 36 seconds, which is the quickest of the year I’m led to believe (or quickest ever, not sure), but that was their only try for the half. The Sharks ground their way into the match and the Knights found themselves heading into the sheds 12-8 down. It was a close and entertaining game, albeit scrappy at times, and Clifford’s late penalty goal 7 minutes from fulltime saw the Knights edge out the Sharks 16-14. Really enjoyed the strip from Barnett on Luke Metcalf. It was beautiful to watch. Even though the score was close, the stats show the Knights had the better of the Sharks on the day. Well, except for the one extra error that is. A pretty sound effort from the Knights overall.

Possession - 54%
Completion Rate - 86% (36/42)
Tackle Breaks - 34
Missed Tackles - 24
Ineffective Tackles - 15
Errors - 9
Penalties Conceded - 4

Verdict: Knights

Eels vs. Cowboys 70-30 @ Cbus
Ladder Position = Eels
Bookies Favourite = Eels

Eels
The Eels were completely dominated in the first half last week against Manly. I mean, it took them a full 10 minutes before they had their first set! Given their recent form slump, the Eels were looking down the barrel when they went into the sheds 26-4 down. They let in another 30 points in the second half and their truly shocking day ended with a 56-10 defeat. The Eels were under the pump from the get-go and I’m sorry to say this but their effort was absolutely woeful. I just don’t know what’s going on with them at the moment. They let in 5 tries in the last 22 minutes and the only excuse you could possibly make was that Matterson was sent off in the 62nd minute and Niukore got binned 3 minutes later. The Eels were pretty bad with 13 players, so no surprise things got ugly when they were down to just 11 (well for 10 minutes anyway). What bewildered me was why they persisted with their “jamming defence”. It clearly wasn’t working yet they kept on doing it. Mind boggling 😱. I reckon that was the worst game I’ve ever witnessed from the Eels, it was a truly mediocre display.

Possession - 43%
Completion Rate - 66% (19/29)
Line Breaks - 1
Tackle Breaks - 13
Missed Tackles - 35
Ineffective Tackles - 5
Errors - 10
Penalties Conceded - 7

Cowboys
I gave the Cowboys a real chance last week against the Tigers but once again they disappointed. They were in the contest at half-time and were just 6 points behind (12-6) heading into the sheds. They applied all the early pressure but wasted so many opportunities with handling errors. Their second half was a bit average to start off with and all of a sudden they were down 24-6 with 14 minutes to go. Late consolation tries to Dearden and Hampton added some slight respectability to the score but it was too little, too late and the Cowboys lost 24-16. The Cowboys struggled with discipline, execution and ball control and have only themselves to blame for that loss. I know they’re capable of much better so that display last week was disappointing to say the least.

Possession - 50%
Completion Rate - 86% (37/43)
Line Breaks - 4
Tackle Breaks - 14
Missed Tackles - 37
Ineffective Tackles - 29
Errors - 6
Penalties Conceded - 4

Verdict: Eels

Dragons vs. Roosters 35-65 @ Toowoomba
Ladder Position = Roosters
Bookies Favourite = Roosters

Dragons
The Dragons started quite well last week against the Panthers and had moments early on where they were dominating possession and territory but they were unable to convert that into points. Heading into the break they were trailing 16-6. They let in a couple of tries in the first 10 minutes of the second half and it was game over basically. They got a couple of late consolation tries of their own late in the match and even though they enjoyed more possession and a better completion rate, they were just no match for the Panthers and went down 34-16. Pretty impressive stint from Talatau Amone off the bench. He set up a try for Jack Bird and then scored one himself.

Possession - 52%
Completion Rate - 80% (35/44)
Tackle Breaks - 33
Missed Tackles - 35
Ineffective Tackles - 8
Errors - 9

Roosters
I think the Roosters were surprised in the first half last week by the Broncos. Ladder position counted for nothing and the Roosters had to fight back after falling behind twice. Heading into the sheds the scores were all tied up at 12 apiece. The Roosters had to fight hard in the second half as the Broncos didn’t go away and were in front yet again. As they did in the first half, the Roosters levelled up and even with Walker’s drop goal with 8 minutes to go, I never felt comfortable. The penalty that Radley gave away (unintentional but still illegal) should have lost it for the Roosters but the “football gods” had other ideas and after Keighran slotted the Roosters’ penalty goal with 45 seconds (or whatever it was) to go, the result went the way of the Roosters in a heart-stopping 21-20 victory. With the number of troops missing it was a gutsy effort from the Roosters. Still have a lot of fine-tuning to do but at least the young fellas are gaining experience in pressure cooker situations against quality opposition. At the end of the day I suppose I’d have to be honest and say we were lucky to get out of that one.

Possession - 55%
Completion Rate - 67% (30/45)
Tackle Breaks - 32
Missed Tackles - 33
Ineffective Tackles - 6
Errors - 19

Verdict: Roosters. Begurk! 🐔 Begurk! 🐔

Broncos vs. Warriors 55-45 @ Suncorp
Ladder Position = Warriors
Bookies Favourite = Warriors

Broncos
The Broncos really took it up to the Roosters last week. They played with plenty of spirit and enthusiasm and were in front twice in the first half but the Roosters fought back and heading into the sheds the scores were tied up at 12-12. More of the same in the second half and when Cobbo slotted through the penalty goal with 4 minutes to go, the “upset” win looked on the cards. Even I thought the Chooks were gone 😩. Unfortunately for the Broncos a late penalty to the Roosters enabled the Chooks to scramble in and the Broncos lost by the narrowest of margins 21-20. It was a brave and encouraging effort from the Broncos. Their goal line defence was top notch and if not for the odd crucial error, they would’ve won that one last week. You had to feel sorry for Tom Flegler though. Not his fault and the penalty was possibly a bit harsh. It was a gutsy effort from the Broncos regardless, albeit a heartbreaker.

Possession - 45%
Completion Rate - 82% (31/38)
Tackle Breaks - 33
Missed Tackles - 32
Ineffective Tackles - 8
Errors - 10

Warriors
Although the Warriors didn’t make full use of the opportunities they had in the first half last week, they still scored 3 tries in 19 minutes and led the Bulldogs 16-10 at the break. While their second half was somewhat sloppy, their defensive effort was good and they managed to keep the Bulldogs scoreless for the half. The Warriors did a great job in keeping the Bulldogs out when the Doggies had 5 attacking sets in a row. A try 10 minutes into the second half and a penalty goal with 15 to go was enough to see the Warriors win their 3rd on the trot and get home 24-10.

Possession - 50%
Completion Rate - 76% (32/42)
Line Breaks - 6
Tackle Breaks - 33
Missed Tackles - 18
Ineffective Tackles - 18
Errors - 12
Penalties Conceded - 2

Verdict: Broncos

What a hard fought game tonight. At half time I thought bunnies were in with a good chance, but not to be.

A query
Is it my imagination, but with the crack-down on high tackles, are more players trying to duck into a tackle, therefore causing the opposition to be penalised for a high tackle?
I raise this, as that is what Kenny (I think it was) appeared to do tonight, having Tom Burgess penalised, and Cleary taking the penalty shot to even the score at 12/12
Curious on this one!

Cheers,
Mary

Evening Christine - spelt dissection, but we aren't here for the typo stuff. Keep your checks with arteries and related issues - regular, as cholesterol can be removed from arteries, if you have it mid to high. I have a little apple cider vinegar quite often, rather than full vinegar and dressings. Love my dressings, but they can be fatty. Keep an eye on things and watch what we eat. I'm just being proactive on some life things. Speak down the track - we are all here and thinking of you.

Keep well - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Evening again Christine - usually specialists have a tall fee ($200.00 initial consultancy). Then it probably reduces to $90.00 ongoing appointments afterwards. Was that "coat hanger" job, investigated when it happened. That's 20plus years ago. You could have had a tear or nerve pinches to cause headaches, numbness - anything. They may have referred you to a neurosurgeon for scans and/or treatment.

Keep well
Big Pete

Big Pete my arteries are not from diet it is from injury that's why he doesn't want to touch me he said if I do you will have a stroke it was not I will if you want me to he said sure I can go in & tidy things up but you will have a stroke so it was not considered even an option he just said flat out no you will have a stroke I don't want to touch you & there are 3 different cardiovascular surgens there another one also said theybwon't touch you when he saw the ultrasound they called the other man in too confirm a few things with the dissection & the completely blocked artery on the right side & he said too me lucky for you you have a vein that is doing the job for the artery we won't touch you but then they found the dissection he just said when it is like this they will not touch you theyvwill just leave it alone so I can't force them to do it & yes first appointment was $200.00 they said I don't need a second appointment but if I had of that would be another $100.00 but he said no further appointment required they are just going to leave it alone big Pete...

Greetings football fans

I have updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp after round 23.

Congrats to a whole bunch of you that got 8 from 8, including the great Wally Lewis (who is a chance for a top three finish this season) and our competition leader The Last Samurai (who will be hard to catch).

If anyone notices anything in the scoring that needs attention just let me know.

We are tinkering around with the tipping comp, updating the details with what will hopefully be our last venue changes for the regular season...hopefully.

We should have the round 24 page published soon, and my previews and selections will be published on Wednesday.

All the best

Morning Christine - understand, I was just conveying the thoughts of what you had experienced. Thinking of you, as we all do towards each other, here on Thinker site.

Keep well (try) and if you think they are feeling cold down your way, bear a thought for us up here, even though sun is shining this morning, we had quite a bit of rain over the past 24hrs along with snow in surroundings townships - with the winds to follow.
