Round eleven selections

Newcastle Knights vs  Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

I'll start with the good news for the Knights (because I'm a glass half full kinda thinker) - they had a win last week, and Anthony Milford is set to make hid debut for the club against his last club. At the risk of knocking my glass over, that Knights win was over the Bulldogs (and we'll talk about their woes shortly). Prior to that they scored just one try in their last three games at home, while their defence leaked 119 points. I may have misplaced my glass. The Broncos have started as outsider in their last three games and they won them all, convincingly so. Haas and Capewell have come through that game without issue and have been named again. Martin has been named at fullback but is carrying a hip injury, and I can confirm that Cobbo has been training at fullback this week. Most expect that fullback is his best position anyway. The Broncos haven't had a top-level halfback since Alfie Langer retired, and it's one of the primary reasons while their results have been below expectations since that era. They've got one now, and he's the buy of the year.

Verdict – Broncos by 16

Result – Broncos 36 defeated Knights 12

Wests Tigers vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday night – Leichhardt Oval

Unless I've missed something the Bulldogs still don't have a coach. Trent Barrett called time on his own tenure on Monday night and most of the players found out on Tuesday. David Furner is already a part of the coaching kennel so he seems the logical person to step in for at least this week, but no news yet. To add a layer of chronic complexity to the situation a fair chunk of the Bulldogs players are at home with the flu. That means they can't train as a group and they don't have a coach. By comparision the Tigers seem stable and unified, and that seems an unusual thing to say.

Verdict – Tigers by 10

Result – Tigers 36 defeated Bulldogs 22

Parramatta Eels vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – CommBank Stadium

Two teams coming off slightly surprising losses in magic round, and both will be keen to make amends against a rival they don't particularly like. We have lost one Trbojevic, with Ben succumbing to a shoulder injury. Brother Tom was on one good leg last week but has been named - I'm sure Manly and NSW fans are hoping it's nothing serious. Morgan Harper returns to the centres for the Sea Eagles after getting hooked by the coach a few weeks ago. Assume the Eels will target him in defence. The Sea Eagles couldn't score a point last week, while the Eels have scored at least 20 points per game on all but two occasions this season. I'm with the home side in front of what should be a large sea of Blue and Gold supporters.

Verdict – Eels by 8

Result – Eels 22 defeated Sea Eagles 20

St George Illawarra Dragons vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – Netstrate Jubilee Stadium

Another two teams coming off losses in magic round, but both didn't miss by much. Tohu Harris returns to the starting thirteen after coming off the bench last week, and he's joined by Euan Aitken in the back row. For the Dragons, Cody Ramsey returns at fullback which makes sense I suppose, although I think Mbye was doing a terrific job in that role. Arthars and Harris-Tevita (whose injury I'd rather not think about) have been named on an extended reserves list but I doubt they'll get called up. The Dragons defeated the Warriors way back in round one on the Sunshine Coast but I'm with the Warriors to turn the tables on Saturday. I am keeping an eye on the weather though. If the rain arrives (and I'm not sure it's ever left Sydney) this contest tightens even further.

Verdict – Warriors by 1

Result – Dragons 24 defeated Warriors 18

North Queensland Cowboys vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday night – Queensland Country Bank Stadium

I'll be up in Townsville for this game and they'll go close to selling out the joint. The Cowboys have won five games in a row and you have to go back to the Thurston era to find the last time they put together a winning streak like that. An important inclusion for the Storm, with Jahrome Hughes back in the halves alongside Munster. Wishart keeps the fullback jersey after his debut in that role last week, and he's doing more than enough to show that he has a future in the NRL. Asofa-Solomona has been ruled out with a knee injury and that certainly evens up the battle in the middle. Almost every week another young Cowboys forward puts up their hand and shows the world how promising they are. Exciting prospects everywhere and they're all Queenslanders too, which is important (for some of us). The Storm almost never lose two games in a row so I'm probably an idiot, but if the Cowboys are in this contest I think the local crowd can help push this team over the line.

Verdict – Cowboys by 2

Result – Cowboys 36 defeated Storm 6

Sydney Roosters vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday night – Sydney Cricket Ground

The Roosters have, for years, been one of those consistent reliable performers in the NRL. This year they are sitting in the top four but they've lost to the teams currently 12th, 14th and 16th. So they're losing to the ordinary teams and knocking off some of the best-performing teams (i.e. Eels, Cowboys, Broncos). Knocking off the Panthers is harder still, but I expect they'll give them a fright here. The venue will help, because that field shape can challenge the general kicking games of visiting playmakers. That said, Cleary looks like a pretty adaptable bloke. The Panthers are unchanged after putting the Storm through the ringer, and rugby league form doesn't get any stronger than that. If the Chooks turn up it's the game of the round.

Verdict – Panthers by 7

Result – Panthers 32 defeated Roosters 12

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Canberra Raiders – Sunday afternoon – Apex Oval, Dubbo

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart hired a horse whisperer or summoned the ghosts of vikings past and brought them into the fold for a team talk with his squad before magic round. And it worked. That's the best they've played all season, and if they can deliver a similar performance on Sunday they'll win again. Jack Wighton returns which clearly helps, and Josh Papalii happens to be playing his 250th NRL game. I'm sure Sticky will remind his players of that at some point. The Rabbitohs looked to have it in the bag last week and almost got run down. A win is a win, but it was far from convincing. I'll take the Raiders in an upset.

Verdict – Raiders by 4

Result – Raiders 32 defeated Rabbitohs 12

Gold Coast Titans vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium

We learned an important thing about both these teams in round ten. The Titans are a much more dynamic team with Campbell at fullback, and the Sharks are a much more dynamic team when Hynes isn't at fullback. I'm pleased to see Hynes back in the halves helping Moylan out, and I'm also pleased to see Lachlan Miller (who deserves a chance) named in the number one jersey. It's hard to fathom how poor the Sharks were last week, after an extraordinary performance to win the week before. I'll back them to turn their fortunes around in what could be a really entertaining game of footy.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result – Sharks 25 defeated Titans 18

"Dia duit gach duine" i dteanga ní mo theanga féin,

OK, this week’s post is a bit different compared to usual. I had a “busy” weekend that started Friday and ran into Monday so I was pressed for time and couldn’t do my normal thing. Had to think quick on my feet and I came up with this instead. Let’s see how it goes eh? OK, let’s do this thing …

Knights vs. Broncos @ McDonald Jones
Probability @ 35-65
Ladder Position = Broncos
Bookies Favourite = Broncos

Knights
The Knights finally ended their horror run of losses last week when they earned themselves a scrappy 16-6 victory against the Bulldogs.

"We missed a couple of chances and bombed a couple of tries but we needed to win, how it looked in attack didn't matter to me. I wanted to see that defensive resolve in the first half. I felt it was an important game to us and that showed through our defensive actions. With our supporters we don't lose them, they can be disappointed in us but they don't leave us, they support us. Hopefully we've made a few of them happier tonight," coach Adam O'Brien said.

Possession - 56%
Completion Rate - 80% (32/40)
Post Contact Metres - 573
Tackle Breaks - 27
Missed Tackles - 11
Errors - 8
Penalties Conceded - 5

Broncos
An absolute gem of a game last week from the “Master” (Adam Reynolds) and the Broncos smashed a hapless Manly side 38-0. The Broncos are humming along nicely.

"The big turnaround for us has been the attitude towards our defence. It's great to see. Just the attitude and steel of the players to actually change what was happening [last year]. You can talk about things and try and do things but the actual change has to come from within. It takes a lot of energy in defence to do what they are doing and you have to be fit ... for the first time in the club's history we had two guys [Reynolds and Capewell] from the previous year's grand final join us so they've got big game experience, they know how to do things and it's rubbing off on everyone," coach Kevin Walters said.

Possession - 60%
Completion Rate - 81% (36/44)
Post Contact Metres - 742
Tackle Breaks - 42
Missed Tackles - 23
Errors - 11
Penalties Conceded - 3

Verdict: Yeah, the Knights won last week but it wasn’t outstanding. The Broncos on the other hand are improving each week. I would think the Broncos will do this relatively easy. Broncos by 12.

Tigers vs. Bulldogs @ Leichhardt Oval
Probability @ 55-45
Ladder Position = Tigers
Bookies Favourite = Tigers

Tigers
The Tigers lost Luke Brooks after half-time last week which didn't help. In the end they were convincingly beaten 36-12 by the Cowboys.

"I'll always praise my team on the effort but there was some defensive stuff and the tries before half-time that put a fair bit of pressure on us. Whether we go down on men, I think these boys are very capable of making sure the points don't rack up like they did. They're working hard to be better defensively and take ownership of that. They don't look for an excuse and we lost a couple there but at times we missed the mark," coach Michael Maguire said.

Possession - 47%
Completion Rate - 83% (30/36)
Post Contact Metres - 495
Tackle Breaks - 28
Missed Tackles - 22
Errors - 7
Penalties Conceded - 8

Bulldogs
The Bulldogs were right in the mix at half-time last week (6-6) but eventually lost to a more desperate Knights side 16-6.

"They're courageous and they try hard but that's not enough to win you the game in the NRL, you have to control the footy. Until we cut out those individual errors that we are making and build pressure and come up with the right kick at the right time... I sound like a broken record because it's the same every week and it's not good enough," (now) ex-coach 😥 Trent Barrett said.

Possession - 44%
Completion Rate - 64% (22/34)
Post Contact Metres - 456
Tackle Breaks - 11
Missed Tackles - 27
Errors - 15
Penalties Conceded - 6

Verdict: Tigers are battling injuries and the Bulldogs were woeful last week. I’m wondering if the Bulldogs will “bounce back” after Trent Barrett fell on his sword. Got a feeling the Tigers might sneak in here. Tigers by 4.

Eels vs. Manly @ Parramatta
Probability @ 65-35
Ladder Position = Eels
Bookies Favourite = Eels

Eels
The Eels were slow off the mark last week against the Roosters but came back well in the second 40 but it wasn’t enough and they fell 31-24 in an otherwise entertaining affair. I thought that solo try from Moses was pure genius 💪.

"Our start was poor. The games that we've lost this year, we've been beaten to the punch at the start of the game and we're waiting to see what the opposition is going to do but we need to go after the game at the start. I was happy that we had that fight in us in the second half but against good teams, you give them that much of a start on the scoreboard it's very hard to peg back," coach Brad Arthur said.

Possession - 52%
Completion Rate - 88% (37/42)
Post Contact Metres - 564
Tackle Breaks - 43
Missed Tackles - 31
Errors - 5
Penalties Conceded - 6

Manly
Manly had no answer to a rampaging Broncos side last week and they were smashed 38-0. A dark day indeed for the Sea Eagles.

"We couldn't hold the ball to start with and then when we did have it we certainly weren't at our best. We were a bit all over the shop to be fair so we've got a bit of work to do there and that'll be worked on this week no doubt but the most disappointing part and where we need to work on most is our defence," captain Daly Cherry-Evans said.

Possession - 40%
Completion Rate - 70% (24/34)
Post Contact Metres - 408
Tackle Breaks - 23
Missed Tackles - 42
Errors - 12
Penalties Conceded - 4

Verdict: The Eels will be smarting after last week’s loss to the Roosters. Manly too will feel the same after their embarrassment against the Broncos. I think the Eels will have the class edge here. Eels by 10.

Dragons vs. Warriors @ Kogarah
Probability @ 60-40
Ladder Position = Warriors
Bookies Favourite = Dragons

Dragons
In an absolute thriller last week the Dragons were looking like they were headed for a victory but the Titans drew level, forced extra time and snatched it away. The Dragons let that one slip in a disappointing 20-16 loss.

"It's a hard one to swallow ... there's no question about our endeavour. We've just got to get better. We took a real beating in the first 25 minutes, they had about 15 sets to our three or four. That probably drained us a lot. I couldn't be prouder of our effort. We just found a way to keep inviting them back in. Once we got to six in front, we didn't close the game out ... they hurt but they're part of growing as a team and making sure we learn from that," coach Anthony Griffin said.

Possession - 47%
Completion Rate - 78% (32/41)
Post Contact Metres - 570
Tackle Breaks - 27
Missed Tackles - 49
Errors - 10
Penalties Conceded - 7

Warriors
The Warriors had a pretty ordinary first-half last week against the Rabbitohs but dominated the second 40. Even so, it wasn’t quite enough and they lost a thriller 32-30. So close and yet so far.

"We can look at it two ways -- the comeback and nearly getting there, or we can focus on the first half. As their coach we've got to focus on the first half. That's certainly not where we want to be as a football club. We certainly don't want to be a team that doesn't start games well and ends up a fair way behind on the scoreboard and then has a great fight back," coach Nathan Brown said.

Possession - 52%
Completion Rate - 82% (38/46)
Post Contact Metres - 562
Tackle Breaks - 31
Missed Tackles - 38
Errors - 11
Penalties Conceded - 3

Verdict: The Dragons were a tad disappointing last week and should have possibly won against the Titans. The Warriors impressed with their second half effort but 40 minutes of footy don’t win games (usually). Having said that though (and seeing it was against the Rabbitohs), I’m gonna give the Warriors a rough chance here. Warriors by 6.

Cowboys vs. Storm @ Townsville
Probability @ 40-60
Ladder Position = Storm
Bookies Favourite = Storm

Cowboys
The Cowboys continued on their merry way last week with a compelling 36-12 victory over a Tigers side down on troops.

"It's a good thing for the group. They've worked really hard, but we ain't done. I'm really excited about what's ahead of us and there's some real belief. It all comes off the back of hard work and I'm proud to coach them. We've got a great bunch of kids and our senior guys are doing a really good job," coach Todd Payten said.

Possession - 53%
Completion Rate - 89% (33/37)
Post Contact Metres - 518
Tackle Breaks - 22
Missed Tackles - 28
Errors - 5
Penalties Conceded - 6

Storm
Even though they lost last week to the Panthers 32-6, the score-line didn’t reflect the effort the Storm put in considering they were down on troops. It’s not often you can say the Storm were brave in defeat but last week they were. I have to say Wishart was a liability at times but the “Melbourne system” will make him better as time goes on.

"It didn't get any better from the start to be honest. They just strangled us for the second half. We had a couple of guys out but the guys that come in, you expect them to do a job. It's probably a game we needed after three or four weeks where we've won really well. With all due respect it was a good come down tonight. Perhaps we haven't been going as well as people have thought," coach Craig Bellamy said.

Possession - 38%
Completion Rate - 65% (23/35)
Post Contact Metres - 355
Tackle Breaks - 32
Missed Tackles - 51
Errors - 13
Penalties Conceded - 8

Verdict: OK, the Cowboys are playing pretty decent footy at the moment and they’re at home. The Storm had their pants pulled down last week but it was against Penrith and they had blokes missing. I’m thinking the Storm bounce back here regardless. Storm by 8.

Roosters vs. Panthers @ SCG
Probability @ 35-65
Ladder Position = Panthers
Bookies Favourite = Panthers

Roosters
The Roosters took the Eels by surprise in the first half last week and had to dig deep to hang on and get the 31-24 victory. Sammy Walker’s little chip’n’chase solo effort try was a pearler🤪.

“I thought it was really tough. We worked hard to get that lead there and then we were just camped on our goal line to finish the first half. You know, some momentum shift there and the guys kept turning up, kept defending. The mountain of ball that they got and then they found a way to claw it back and execute some plays to win the game. I thought it was tough. Our goal line defence has been outstanding and we had to use it tonight,” coach Trent Robinson said.

Possession - 48%
Completion Rate - 86% (31/36)
Post Contact Metres - 570
Tackle Breaks - 31
Missed Tackles - 43
Errors - 6
Penalties Conceded - 3

Panthers
Another impressive effort from the Panthers last week saw them come away with a resounding 32-6 victory over the Storm and proved they’re the best currently running around in the competition. Went about their job in a professional and clinical manner as usual and did what good teams do. Great contributions from Nathan Cleary, Jarome Luai and Isaah Yeo.

"It wasn't a normal week and could've been a distraction if we wanted it to be. Ivan was missing and really wanted to fly up. I thought they were really good. I thought Nathan controlled the game, particularly in the second half. Both teams will be better the next time we play each other," assistant coach Cameron Ciraldo said.

Possession - 62%
Completion Rate - 81% (35/43)
Post Contact Metres - 684
Tackle Breaks - 51
Missed Tackles - 32
Errors - 10
Penalties Conceded - 6

Verdict: The Roosters finally showed what they’re capable of last week against the Eels but I don’t hold much confidence that they can beat the Panthers, especially witnessing how the Panthers tore the Storm apart. Breaks my heart but Panthers by 14.

Rabbitohs vs. Raiders @ Dubbo
Probability @ 60-40
Ladder Position = Rabbitohs
Bookies Favourite = Rabbitohs

Rabbitohs
The Rabbitohs had a great first half last week but in my opinion were a tad lucky to escape with a close 32-30 victory over a Warriors side who fought back really well and nearly stole it.

"I thought we had enough points in the bag to hang on but it got nervy for sure, I'm happy the boys held on and got the job done. We've been a bit busted with the flu running through the place. I knew fatigue was going to be an issue late. There's a few things [for the second half], we lost Hosty two minutes into the game and that pushes Jai to an edge. Our middles were under the pump, but in saying that we didn't respect the ball with some poor fourth and fifth tackle offloads," coach Jason Demetriou said.

Possession - 48%
Completion Rate - 79% (31/39)
Post Contact Metres - 633
Tackle Breaks - 38
Missed Tackles - 31
Errors - 11
Penalties Conceded - 7

Raiders
The Raiders threw the form lines out the window and recorded an astonishing 30-10 win over the Sharks 30-10 last week. Considering they had 2 blokes binned, their defence really stood up.

"I know what's inside that jumper and we saw that today. I was very proud of that effort, it was courageous and a very tough win. We completed and kicked well, we played better. There were games at the start of the year where we'd make under-12 and under-14 errors. I was very happy for Zac [Woolford], it was a responsibility for us to make his first one a memorable one," coach Ricky Stuart said.

Possession - 46%
Completion Rate - 82% (32/39)
Post Contact Metres - 594
Tackle Breaks - 35
Missed Tackles - 23
Errors - 8
Penalties Conceded - 10

Verdict: The Rabbitohs only really played 40 minutes of footy last week as far as I’m concerned. The Raiders were surprisingly good last week which is making this a tough one for me. Will the Bunnies actually play a full 80 and was the Raiders’ effort just a flash in the pan? Did I mention this was a hard one? Might stick with the Bunnies here. Rabbitohs by 4.

Titans vs. Sharks @ Cbus
Probability @ 35-65
Ladder Position = Sharks
Bookies Favourite = Sharks

Titans
The Dragons were looking likely to win last week against the Titans but a try from Wallace forced extra time and Isaako scored the winning try to get the Titans home in an absorbing contest 20-16.

"We all know we are coming off five losses and I thought the game in tough conditions was really good. I felt like we were looking the more dangerous but in the end you never know so to get the try in golden point was brilliant and what we needed. Both sides had some good chances [at field goal]. When we had the scrum I just said go for a try and we were good enough to score," coach Justin Holbrook said.

Possession - 53%
Completion Rate - 81% (39/48)
Post Contact Metres - 606
Tackle Breaks - 49
Missed Tackles - 27
Errors - 11
Penalties Conceded - 4

Sharks
The Sharks were lacklustre last week against the Raiders. They tried to get back into it in the second half but the Raiders’ defence was too good and the Sharks lost a disappointing one 30-10. They should’ve done better, especially when the Raiders had blokes in the bin.

"I thought we were in it early but just a couple of those fundamental last play try, we lost the confidence. A system area in the backfield both on the end of points and a simple error and middle try caught us on the hop and we never recovered. They gave us a few chances in the second half but our execution was off in the end. I felt like they out-competed us and were a bit more physical than us," coach Craig Fitzgibbon said.

Possession - 54%
Completion Rate - 71% (32/45)
Post Contact Metres - 603
Tackle Breaks - 23
Missed Tackles - 35
Errors - 14
Penalties Conceded - 4

Verdict: The Titans won last week but had to do it in extra time. The Sharks were pretty average but had excuses. Now that Nicho Hynes is returning to halfback, they should be able to get that winning feeling again. Sharks by 16.

Let’s finish off with another “Song of the Week”…

I thought I’d put up the “shortened” version @ 5:44 as the long version is 13:33 🤪. Great clip, shame about the look. Did that give it away? If I told you some consider him the GOAT, would that give it away? Enjoy…

Broncos V Knights without Reynolds....should be interesting. Also heard a journo saying Milford will be back for the Knights against his former club and will be looking for redemption, Milford should be back to apologise for his lack of performance as the Broncs "million dollar man".

Now now Mark we should be glad he came back that's not gone close to the end was very helpful

They definitely need too Tiger, otherwise another 3 will be out of "A's" 3 strike comp (including your spar mate Rocket), and 5 will then have 2 strikes against them (including yourself)

Interesting game isn't it!!!

Hi Thinker.
Without wanting to sound pedantic, I am confused by your comment about the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Despite the actual playing field always being the same rectangular shape and dimensions, do you feel the shape of the surrounding ground has an effect on the kicking game of key play-makers ?

Rikki Sixx's picture

Hey Thinker, it says I have only made 72 picks when everyone else has made 80. I'm sure I have submitted my tips every week. Can you check this please? Thanks

Mary S's picture

Hi Rikki Sixx,
Under the Season Scoreboard (or Guest Tips at the top of the page), if you click on your name, all the rounds that you have tipped in are shown.
Round 10 is missing, giving you the 72 instead of 80.

Personally, I've found it pays to check, after submitting your tips, that they appear before you leave the site, in case there's a glitch in the system at either end.
Cheers,
Mary

Rikki Sixx's picture

Thanks Mary. Not sure what happened. maybe I forgot to hit Submit? Can I make tips for the rest of this round after the round has started? Thanks

Mary S's picture

From what I've noticed Rikki Sixx, if they do not appear with all the other tipsters under Thinkers previews, then post here in the comments section.

Any games that are already played, appear to be entered as the team that lost.

Hope this helps, so enter the rest of your tips in this section.

Watching Warriors v Dragons...
The warriors are missing their conversions again and missing out on valuable points AGAIN !
I really like Reece Walsh as a player but there needs to be a 2nd option for goal kicking duties because he can be a bit hot and cold with the boot.

MGM's picture

2nd try awarded to the Warriors winger where he contacts the corner post before grounding the ball .
Pretty sure I've seen tries disallowed for that.
Anyone know the rule ? (he was in the air both times)

P.S.
4 tries to 3 now and it's 18 - 18 !

Well done thinker on tipping the boys they well and truly won tonight and are contenders for the final i think

a's picture

Yeah they are seriously threats this year

The Thinker's picture

@MGM

Apparently it does. Andrew Johns has talked about this a few times, and I have heard a few other general play kickers talk about it. Kicking for touch (and accidentally kicking out on the full) and kicks going over the dead ball line (for 20m restarts).

When you have a rectangular field and a rectangular crowd (parallel to the line markings on the field) it's less visually confusing for the eye.

All the best
