Round twelve selections

Melbourne Storm vs Manly Sea Eagles – Thursday night – AAMI Park

A rich (albeit recent) rivalry between these two sides, and they face each other under unusual circumstances in round 12. Both teams have lost successive games leading into this, and both are missing their superstar fullbacks. What makes the Storm defeats all the more interesting is the scorelines. Generally, when a team beats the Storm its usually by a whisker. Over the past fortnight the Storm have conceded 68 points and scored just 12. I can't imagine the Storm are panic-prone, but they are concerning numbers.  Importantly, Hughes is back in the halves for this contest and Harry Grant returns to the dummy half role. That helps a lot, as does the return to AAMI Park after a fortnight in Queensland. For the Sea Eagles, the worst possible news with Tom Trbojevic sidelined for most if not all of the season. Ouch! They were more than competitive (translation: unlucky) against the Eels in round 11. I've no doubt they'll put up a contest in what I expect will be a high-scoring game but I'll stick with the Storm at home. Total points overs (if such things interest you).

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result – Storm 28 defeated Sea Eagles 8

Penrith Panthers vs North Queensland Cowboys – Friday night – BlueBet Stadium

Five rounds into the 2022 season the Cowboys had won just two games. In that period they were beaten by the Bulldogs and the Warriors and the Roosters towelled them up. At that point you would be forgiven for thinking that this was another season of 'rebuilding', but they haven't lost a game since and are now on the cusp of the top two. One of the reasons they're doing so well is they've been close to full-strength throughout this period. That is about to be tested, with injuries to Taumalolo and Feldt and Origin duties looming. Friday night is a test too, taking on the defending premiers who are travelling at least as well as they were last year. Penrith are also at home in front of that raucous crowd of theirs, so assume decisions by officials are more likely to favour the home team. The Panthers, like the Cowboys, have avoided injuries (they have none, zip, zilch) and have named the same starting thirteen for a month. When you've got the best squad in the NRL, and they're all fit, you aren't going to lose too often. It's the game of the round, and don't be surprised if these teams are playing each other again in September (twice...thanks a).

Verdict – Panthers by 7

Result – Panthers 22 defeated Cowboys 0

Brisbane Broncos vs Gold Coast Titans – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

Many of you would recall that I had the Titans pegged as a finals prospect at the start of the season. I un-pegged them about a month ago and it looks like I was right (eventually). While their prospects this season have continued to slide, the other two Queensland-based NRL teams have strung together a bunch of wins and look almost certain to play finals football this year. The Broncos have named the same seventeen as last week, with the promising Ezra Mam getting another run at halfback. With a bye for the Broncos next week this gives Adam Reynolds plenty of time to recover, For the Titans, David Fifita has been named on an extended bench but he's unlikely to start here. The Titans have won three games this seasons over the teams currently 11th, 12th and 14th. Their biggest winning margin this season is 4 points. In the last five rounds the Broncos are undefeated, scoring 156 points while conceding just 45. I'm sure the Titans will try, but I can't see how they can win. I'll predict a competitive first half and a late capitulation in the second half.

Verdict – Broncos by 26

Result – Broncos 35 defeated Titans 24

New Zealand Warriors vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday afternoon – Moreton Daily Stadium

Promising youngster and perfume brand Chanel Harris-Tavita has decided to take a break from the NRL to spend some time as a writer (and perfume brand). Given the injury he suffered (and played with) a few weeks ago I'm not entirely surprised that he's considering other career options. He's playing on Saturday though, so I'm not sure when the career break begins. I'm with the Knights here in a bit of an upset. The Warriors are missing a few big men and the Knights have a forward pack that can, on their day, compete with just about anyone. Mind you, the only team the Knights have beaten in recent history is the Bulldogs, so they deserve to be the outsiders in this.

Verdict – Knights by 2

Result – Knights 24 defeated Warriors 16

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Wests Tigers – Saturday night – Accor Stadium

In a tough round I have found this game the toughest of all - a little unusual given the bookmakers have the Bunnies as a very firm favourite. Of course they can win this, and if Cameron Murray actually plays (note that he's currently on the extended bench) they probably will. Cody Walker was out of sorts last week but he's a much better player with Murray in the middle, and this is Indigenous Round so there's every chance he'll have a blinder. After all that, I still have my doubts. Tatola and Milne have been named but will need to pass concussion protocols. Nicholls returns off the bench after an extended break. And they're not playing well. The Tigers aren't playing well either, but Luke Brooks and (I think more importantly) Daine Laurie are back this week. The Tigers will have a fair chunk of crowd support at Accor Stadium, and I think they can pull off an upset here.

Verdict – Tigers by 1

Result – Rabbitohs 44 defeated Tigers 18

Cronulla Sharks vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – PointsBet Stadium

This is almost as tough as the last game...for me at least. The Sharks are a difficult team to beat at home on a Saturday night. No one wants to be there (not even our former PM now that he doesn't have to pretend to like rugby league anymore). We saw glimpses of the Sharks best against the Titans but they are patchy, and their form over the last month is down from where they were prior to that. The Roosters have been inconsistent this season too, but are getting back to somewhere near their best. They were comfortably beaten by the Panthers last week, but that's clearly the benchmark. Tupouniua returns on the bench for the Chooks this week, and he's under-rated by almost everyone except the people he play with. A terrific contest.

Verdict – Roosters by 2

Result – Roosters 36 defeated Sharks 16

Canterbury Bulldogs vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Sunday afternoon – Belmore Sports Ground

The Dragons have won four of their last six which is pretty good going for them. Notably the Bulldogs have been a bit of a bogey team for the Dragons in recent times, and the return to Belmore could fire up the home team. On form though, it's the Dragons in another tight contest this round

Verdict – Dragons by 2

Result – Dragons 34 defeated Bulldogs 24

Canberra Raiders vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – GIO Stadium

There are plenty of interesting contests in round twelve, and this could be the best of the lot of them. The Raiders have looked like world-beaters ever since Ricky Stuart brought in that horse whisperer or the ghost of Sam Backo or whoever it was he dragged into the inner sanctum. Promising youngster Xavier Savage has been named at fullback, and I expect Mitchell Moses will be peppering him with towering bombs at every opportunity. In what looks a very even contest, that may be the achilles heel that gets the Eels over the line.

Verdict – Eels by 1

Result – Eels 28 defeated Raiders 20

Greetings football fans

I have updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp after round 11. Plenty of solid scores with many of our tipsters getting 6 from 8, but just two of us got perfect scores. Congrats to No Worries NZ and Buzz105. Outstanding work.

If anyone notices anything with the scoring that needs attention just let me know.

All the best

Mate, can you have a look at mine. I can't be sure but i was on 51 last week and i got 7 from eight on the week end.
Cheers mate.

The Thinker's picture

@Esra Star

I had you on 50 points last week, and 7 from 8 this week (for a total of 57).

I scored you 3 from 8 in Magic Round (Broncos, Titans, Cowboys).

If something else doesn't seem right just let me know.

All good mate,,thanks for checking.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Esra that is called tigerholicism its a condition where you always think you are higher up the ladder than you are.
There is no cure unfortunately.

Esra Star's picture

I'll give myself an upper cut,mate. :)

mark ashford's picture

Hey Rocket,
I see you are second from the top, well done my Broncos mate. The boys are going well this year. Haven't heard much from those Rooster fans in Sydney, have they gone to sleep after a couple of defeats?

tigerholic's picture

Mark

Please don't inflate Rockets ego too much, he is equal second with a number of proven tipsters who have been at the pointy end before.

Tiger

mark ashford's picture

Hey Tiger,
It's been a while since Rocket has been near the top, just thought I'd give him a bit of encouragement to help him stay there. Tipping isn't easy, how about those Cowboys flogging the storm last week, didn't see that coming.

a's picture

Agreed I didn’t expect cowboys to flog the storm at all

Esra Star's picture

This weeks round is going to be a hard one to pick.

tigerholic's picture

Hey Mark

I really don't know where the Cowboys have found their form, even after they lost Feldt and Taumalolo early they never looked back.

This week looks extremely hard to pick at first glance, maybe Sir Rocket can enlighten all of his faithful fans or at least excite the Butcher with some astonishing tips.

Take Care

Hi Mark,
An interesting exercise -
Click on "Home" & Rocket shows as 4th on the Scoreboard.
Click on "Round twelve selections" and he appears as 2nd.
Try with "Guest Tips & "the Lounge" and see what you get!

It's great for all Bronco & Cowboy supporters to see the vast improvement in their teams this season. Hope it continues!!!

Cheers,
Mary

Mary S's picture

Don't worry Mark, about the exercise above - Rocket is in 2nd place this morning on all counts!

I have noticed though, on the first day the new round, or scoreboard goes on the sight, that names (within the same score) will change around between the different headings), Weird.

Have a great day.
Cheers,
Mary

Hey Mary S and "a"
Broncos and Cowboys going so well, lets hope it continues. Your Cows face Penrith at their home this week will be a big ask but I wish them well. The Broncs face Titans at home in Bris will be another good game. All I can say is good luck to both out teams.

don't be surprised if these teams are playing each other again in September.

Well they are playing in the last round to which is on September

"Dia duit gach duine" i dteanga ní mo theanga féin,

This “new” way of posting is a lot easier and saves me some time so I think I’ll stick with it for the time being. Just quickly, had a giggle when JWH gave Sutton a “spray” last week. Haven’t seen a player binned for “verbal abuse” for so long. Actually, I can’t remember the last time I did 🤪. Yeah, he did collect JFH high but didn’t think there was much in it. Then again I might be a little biased 😉.

@ Mr Ashford - Relieved you said … “Haven't heard much from those Rooster fans in Sydney” and not in Perth 😁. Mate, I believe (hope) in my heart each and every week that my BBB will win (except when we’re up against the Panthers and Storm) but to be honest, we’re travelling ordinary at the minute. Just have to think they’ll click soon or later. Well, the sooner the better as far as I'm concerned. OK, let’s do this thing …

Storm vs. Manly @ AAMI
Probability @ 75-25
Ladder Position = Storm
Bookies Favourite = Storm

Storm
"We lacked cohesion, and we can handle that, but I thought there was lack of competing tonight which really disappointed me. The Cowboys are a good side, we knew that, they just out-competed us tonight. We can handle getting beaten or being outplayed but when we beat ourselves through lack of competing, through lack of doing the little things really well, that's cause for concern," coach Craig Bellamy said.

Manly
"Tom has got a dislocated shoulder. We won't be able to determine the extent of the damage until scans are done. He will be bitterly disappointed, he takes it very hard. He sort of blames himself but he is just having one of those runs at the moment and he will bounce back. I think there was plenty of character shown tonight. We can compete and we are going to need to. Arguably we were the better side but didn't get the points," coach Des Hasler said.

Completion Rate - 81% (26/32)

The Storm have lost 2 in a row as well as being kept scoreless in the second half of both those games. While they had excuses (?) it must still be a little concerning for them. They will definitely be looking to bounce back after last week’s result. Manly let a 20-10 lead slip away and while they defended bravely, they couldn’t weather the pressure from the Eels. The binning of Keppie and losing Turbo to injury certainly didn’t help. Manly will obviously be desperate to get back into winning form seeing as they’ve lost 4 of their last 5.

Verdict: Storm by 12

Panthers vs. Cowboys @ Panthers Stadium
Probability @ 70-30
Ladder Position = Panthers
Bookies Favourite = Panthers

Panthers
"I thought it was a really strong, committed, professional performance. The Roosters are a really strong defensive unit when they've got control and they can number up well, but we started to get a bit of fatigue and if you can start to punch a couple of holes in them and their line starts to get a bit staggered it gives you the opportunity to execute which we did tonight. Jarome is the kind of guy when you do have that little bit of dominance he becomes most dangerous and he's starting to feel when to take that on and that's definitely a win," coach Ivan Cleary said.

Cowboys
"The main message at half-time was that we just had to be aggressive and go after the contest and we started really fast in that second half and we played some really good football. I'm really proud of the way they went about it in the second half. For a large part of that second half we had a couple of guys playing out of position and we had mainly all of our young guys on the park and they were standing up so it's good to watch," coach Todd Payten said.

Two good sides in red hot form muscle up this weekend. The Panthers with a commanding win over the Roosters and the Cowboys surprisingly (?) destroyed the Storm in possibly their best effort so far this year. The Cowboys have silenced the naysayers but the Panthers are plainly the best side in the competition at the minute so it should be a real test for both sides.

Verdict: Panthers by 14

Broncos vs. Titans @ Suncorp

Broncos
"We weren't so great tonight in our first half but in the second, the boys came together and finished off well. I'm particularly happy for the playing group and everyone involved at the club because there have been some tough days and tough years. We seem to be getting in front of the curve now which is really good. 'Oatesy' has come alive this year and Cobbo was always going to become the player he is. I love the way Selwyn goes about his work. The bigger the occasion the more involved he gets," coach Kevin Walters said.

Titans
"We're back to a few rounds earlier in the year where we're not stopping momentum when it's not going our way. Three quick tries and then we're trying to chase a game in tough conditions and fall short. That's the disappointing part, we leak one but have to do something about it then instead of leaking three. We half compete on a kick and then they run the length of the field. It cost us, just little lapses of concentration," coach Justin Holbrook said.

The Broncos are travelling along nicely at the moment. Those 4 tries in 13 minutes last week were a joy to watch. They did it without Reynolds and it looks like they’ll have to do it without him this week as well. The Titans have been somewhat second-rate this year and last week’s score line flattered them a bit as they scored two late tries when the game was virtually done and dusted.

Verdict: Broncos by 8

Warriors vs. Knights @ Moreton Daily

Ladder Position = Warriors

Warriors
"We had a lot of people do good things today. It was probably the best our ruck defence has been all year I would say. People worked hard and we had some blokes who played terrific footy but we also had two or three players who had some bad moments. We gifted them tries far too easy and in the NRL it makes a difference. That was the most disappointing thing. Four tries should be enough to win most games. Tohu is our best player and he has come back in his second game after nine months and that is why we improved. He helps our attack and our defence a lot," coach Nathan Brown said.

Knights
"The Selwyn Cobbo first try is not the reason for the score line at the end. The three line breaks off kick chase hurt more. We can control that, none of the officials are involved in that, that's on us. The Cobbo try took the wind out of us. We're in a state of a bit of performance anxiety at the moment. I thought Anthony Milford had some good touches early and then he'd like some stuff back in the second half. It's probably a reflection of the whole team," coach Adam O'Brien said.

In a match they could have possibly won, the Warriors lost a disappointing one last week. Their goal-kicking more than likely contributed to the end result. They led 18-12 early in the second half but were overrun in the end. The Knights started well last week but the Broncos simply shut them down in the second half. That 13 minute period when they let the Broncos run in 4 tries was telling and the Knights suffered yet another loss. If the Warriors can put in for the full 80 they’ll give this a shake.

Rabbitohs
"It's disappointing, we had a great week and I thought our prep going into the game was good. Bit of adversity at the start of the game and individually we were trying to solve it, and we put a lot of pressure on our defence. Canberra completed higher and did what they had to do, they were running harder and tackling harder. I just felt like we still gave them opportunities through poor offloads that put more pressure on our defence... when we got opportunities, we overplayed, chasing the scoreboard which has been something we've done too often instead of having more patience,” coach Jason Demetriou said.

I always felt the boys could get back in control we would be able to get the game. I think our attack is really coming along. I thought Jock came in and did what he needed to and did a really good job for us so we know what we are capable of. We have just got to tidy up those moments in the game that are hurting us," coach Michael Maguire said.

The Rabbitohs were disappointing in their 32-12 loss to the Raiders. Not sure what’s going on but they’re “all over the shop” this year. Their current form is somewhat confusing and they really need to do something about it, especially their completion rates. The Tigers survived a second half fight-back from the Bulldogs last week but still won comfortably. The Rabbitohs will provide a stronger test for the Tigers this week so they will need to be on top of their game if they’re going to be any chance.

Sharks
"I was really happy with the first half. I thought one small defensive lapse but we had decent control of field position which is something we haven't done for a few weeks. We took our opportunities in the second half. Lachy is electric on his feet. It hasn't stopped raining since we've been here but thankfully it was firm under foot so he could use his footwork. He's very elusive and a really good person, really popular. I'll be a brave man not to pick Will but Lachy has showed he's capable and he's got utility value," coach Craig Fitzgibbon said.

"The cracks don't have to be big for a team like Penrith to take the opportunities and we need to shut them down. If we're going to be the team that we want to be that needs to be nil-all at half-time or 6-all at half-time and just 'come on' and so we need to learn really quickly so that was a good lesson, whether you're disappointed or whatever it is, we need to pick that up," coach Trent Robinson said.

The Sharks bounced back with a determined effort against the Titans last week. A little worrying was how they switched off towards the end and let in a couple of late tries. They were clearly the better side on the day and should’ve won by more than seven. The Roosters were no match for a clinical Panthers last week. Pleasingly, the Roosters fought the game out right to the end. If the Sharks start making defensive lapses like they did last week against the Titans, the Roosters are a big chance in this one.

"Our discipline needs to change and we just made a few errors that we need to rectify. We should be able to defend our line, we shouldn't let in cheap tries. Our defence let us down in the first half and let us down a bit in the second half. We can do better. We can't have two barge-overs on the try line. There is some positive points out of the game, but we need to rectify other things. It's a real rollercoaster ride, you get all that hope up and then it dies. I did enjoy it and I am happy about being back,” coach Mick Potter said.

I've never seen anything like that rolling maul. I don't think you are allowed to do that ... but I am glad he let it go because we got out of our own in-goal. It was a massive play. For us it looked like initially we were going to get caught in goal so it was just a sign of what they wanted to do in the second half. They wanted to win that game and they lifted themselves with little efforts like that, defensively when we needed them," coach Anthony Griffin said.

The Bulldogs fought their way back from 18-0 down to get within two points 14 minutes into the second half, but it all fell away in the last 26. Schoupp getting binned most probably contributed to that a bit. On their day the Bulldogs have got it in them but they just need to be more consistent. The Dragons fought their way back last week to get home by six points, largely due to Zac Lomax (2 tries, 3/4 conversions and a penalty goal). The Dragons aren’t exactly on fire but at least they’re competitive on a regular basis.

That win after the week we've had with the flu and injuries and players that had to pull out ... it was a really, really good performance under the conditions and the pressure we had on us this week. I come into these press conferences and I know everybody wants a scientific answer or a strategic answer to what's going on - when you're not getting 50 per cent of the ball and you're not completing at more that 50-odd percent, you're not going to beat anyone," coach Ricky Stuart said.

A couple of games in the past we have led and been run down so I thought we played the long game really well. We were nice and patient and calm, we had a man in the bin just before half-time and we were down by 10 points so I thought it was true character what we showed tonight. That was probably one of the best games I have seen Manly play this year," coach Brad Arthur said.

After a disheartening start to the season, the Raiders have hit a nice patch of form in the last 3 weeks with wins over the Bulldogs, Sharks and Rabbitohs. The Eels, on the other hand have lost two of their last four but showed a lot of determination and sustained pressure last week in their come from behind win over the Sea Eagles. The Raiders are flying with renewed confidence but the Eels have the edge in class.

Hi Wally Lewis I’m so glad to hear from you

The NRL and the clubs could save themselves a ton of money in legal fees and paper work by abandoning all contracts. They are not worth the paper they are written on these days. Yes,it is now a professional sport but with the big dollars should come a certain amount of loyalty,i think. The club had faith in your ability,so show some faith back. At least until the end of the season.
Payne Haas and those that walk away mid season show a marked lack of character.

The Payne Hass saga makes me sick to the stomach with these greedy boof headed players. Hass has another 2 years to go on his Broncs contract. He is currently on $800,000 a season and wants 1.2M for next year and 1.3M for his final year. This is absolute nonsense. The NRL needs to grow a set of balls and tell him if he walks away from his contract then he can't play for another club for 2 years and that applies to any player trying to break contracts. The Broncs have bailed this fool out many times and it's time he showed his gratitude.

Agree totally

Mark,
You,re spot on!
Try and do this anywhere else in the business world and see how you go.
The NRL is the Goliath and the players are the Davids.
In the rest of the business world Goliath ties you up in the courts and you can't play during that process whilst lawyers gobble up your money.
If the NRL makes this the standard, first course of action we will see this trend die pretty quickly.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, that would mean they're stuck with
Matt Lodge !

I agree infact they should give him a pay cut just for the inconvience ...

@ GummySharks,
Brisbane pulled a rabbit out of their hat for you tonight to keep you ahead in the A Game .
Well done mate, thought we were going to catch you up there !
Bloody Titans cost me 4 big multi wins as one of the legs in each multi was Titans +8.5 so going in to second half I could afford for them to drop 28 points and still win(big!)..... but they dropped 31 unanswered points.
Ezra Mam had a blinder for the Broncs , I'll bet Mark & Rocket loved that! A good rookie to keep an eye on.

Sorry to hear that MGM. Love a good winning punting story. Funnily enough, even though things looked desperate ( hopeless) at half time, I saw a group of Broncos players on tv gathered in the dressing room talking fairly seriously and thought " Geez, I don't think they've given up yet, early try and maybe ....." However, I think it was more good luck on my behalf that they got home. Actually tossed up with taking the Warriors this week. Let's see how lucky I was!

@Gummy,
We both got what we deserved picking the Warriors mate.
At least you didn't take them in the A Game. (but you'll have to eventually !)

The Warriors need a name change because their fans have become The Worriers. Hopefully the team turns up for the second half of the game next week against the Sea Eagles.

Hey Esra,
I read that link re Matt Lodge.
"Recruitment guru" Peter O'Sullivan may be a Lodge fan but he should be thinking more about the "fool me once" principal .
I can't see Wayne Bennett being interested in that unruly thug.
He's a front rower not a hard-to-find fast thinking ,eyes up multi-talented playmaker ... there will be much better options for Bennett,
including promising young men who would bend over backwards to please him and behave themselves.

@MGM

You may already know this - Matt Lodge is engaged to Peter O'Sullivan's daughter.

Given that, he probably will end up at the Dolphins.

I do think Wayne brings out the best in him.

@Thinker,
I didn't know that ... Wow!
What a fountain of knowledge you are Mr T!

Still doesn't explain Browns comments. Weird.

We cannot know all that's gone on between them Esra.

I went and called this the hardest round of the season (for tipping), and a whole bunch of tipsters have scored perfect rounds. A bunch of freaks the lot of you :-)

Scores to follow soon (ish).
