Round twenty two selections

Penrith Panthers vs Melbourne Storm – Thursday night – BlueBet Stadium

The Panthers allayed concerns they might take it easy leading into the finals with a more than comfortable victory over the Raiders in Canberra. They did that without Cleary, Luai and Kikau, so I think we can all agree this is a very good football team. Those three won't play in this either, and one of their key enforcers (Fisher-Harris) has been suspended and joins them on the sideline. The Storm have lost Kaufusi and Hughes this week - significant ommisions both of them. Munster returns to the halves after starring at fullback last week, with Nick Meaney returning in the number one jersey. Importantly, Justin Olam returns in the centres. No-one thinks the Storm can win this do they? No-one sensible at least. Here I come.

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result – Storm 16 defeated Panthers 0

New Zealand Warriors vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday night – Mt Smart Stadium

The Bulldogs haven't had a terrific season, but things have clearly turned a corner since the interim coach has taken over the clipboard. They currently sit in 12th position and they are unlikely to finish any higher than that. They can slip lower than 12th, so their focus for the rest of this year will be on holding their current position, playing well, and heading into next season with some confidence (and a roster) that can compete for a top eight result. With the Warriors sitting just below them on the ladder currently, this is one of those games they should be winning. Pengai Jnr isn't making the trip to New Zealand, and he will be missed as Burton and Averillo thrive off the back of his offloads. Despite that, I'm with the visitors here in what should be a competitive contest.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 4

Result – Warriors 42 defeated Bulldogs 18

Parramatta Eels vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – CommBank Stadium

What a game this is. The Eels looked wobbly against the Sea Eagles last week. Commentators were questioning the interchange rotations of the Eels coach, but when Paulo and Campbell-Gillard returned for the last 25 or so minutes of that game they simply ran away with the contest. The quality of that game was high, and there's a tiny part of my brain that thinks the Eels attack (through the hands) is better when Moses isn't there (I should add that the Moses kicking game is very important , as is his goal-kicking). The Rabbits have won five of their last six, and their only loss was in extra time to a top three side. This run of form started in round 16 against the Eels in fact, with a comprehensive 30-12 victory in the wet. The battle of the fullbacks is worth the price of admission alone here. Gutherson will be more involved than ever while Moses is unavailable, and Mitchell tore the Warriors to pieces last week, until the boss let him finish work early. The sixth placed Rabbits have a much better points differential than the fifth placed Eels, and the winner here is some chance of forcing their way into the top four. In what looks an even contest, goal-kicking could prove the difference. Under those circumstances, I'll back Mitchell to out-point Gutherson.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 4

Result – Rabbitohs 26 defeated Eels 0

Sydney Roosters vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday afternoon – Sydney Cricket Ground

It's not easy to get a read on how well these two sides are going at the minute. They're both winning, but they're winning against teams they should be winning against. The Cowboys have beaten the Tigers (controversially), Dragons and Bulldogs while the Roosters have beaten the Dragons, Knights, Manly (with 7 missing) and a Broncos outfit that seems to have lost its way. The Cowboys finished well against the Bulldogs last week and they are clearly a very fit side. With the Roosters still missing some key forwards (Collins, Tupouniua, Taukeiaho), I'll back the visitors in what would be something of an upset.

Verdict – Cowboys by 2

Result – Roosters 32 defeated Cowboys 18

Wests Tigers vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night – Scully Park, Tamworth

The Sharks could easily end the season in the top two, and they could (less easily) fall out of the top four. They're a team with plenty to play for, and they're playing like it. The Tigers could still end up with a wooden spoon this year. You'd think that would provide enough motivation for them to give this a red hot go. That said, they couldn't beat the Knights. If you can't beat the Knights, you can't beat the Sharks.

Verdict – Sharks by 10

Result – Sharks 36 defeated Tigers 12

Brisbane Broncos vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday night – Suncorp Stadium

This is the first of three games in a row at home for the Broncos, and this is definitely the easiest. They've disappointed over the last fortnight with games I expected them to win, but some key line-up changes should help here. Te Maire Martin returns at fullback and Brenko Lee returns in the centres. That should tighten up the defense and reduce the error rates. The Knights have lost Barnett with a thumb injury and Clifford is out after finishing the game last week with a broken arm (sheesh). Adam Klune returns in the halves and he's no slouch, and Klemmer is back in the front row after an interesting week. I'm still not convinced everyone at the Knights is singing from the same hymn book. I'll stick with the Broncos here. They win this and they're just about assured of a top eight finish.

Verdict – Broncos by 10

Result – Broncos 28 defeated Knights 10

Canberra Raiders vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Sunday afternoon – GIO Stadium

I probably don't have to say much about Raiders coach Ricky Stuart. In case you missed it, he won't be at the game and isn't allowed to make contact with anyone from the club until next week. If the NRL invested all the money they have received from Stuart in fines over the years they could fund the renovations at Leichhardt Oval themselves. The timing isn't great because this game is super-important to the Raiders finals prospects. The two teams above them on the ladder and the team just below them could all (easily) win their games this round. The Raiders will also be missing their best forward (Tapine) but the Dragons have lost some firepower up front too (Molo and Sims). I'm with the Raiders at home with so much at stake but not with enormous confidence. Should the Dragons win this one, Ben Hunt all but earns himself a Dally M medal.

Verdict – Raiders by 2

Result – Raiders 24 defeated Dragons 22

Gold Coast Titans vs Manly Sea Eagles – Sunday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium

The Nine Network haven't done a great job picking their Sunday afternoon games this month. It was the Tigers vs the Knights in round 21 and this isn't much better (and the next two are possibly worse). The most interesting thing about this game is that Kieran Foran gets a chance to catch up with his team-mates next year. Manly have to win the rest of their regular season matches to make the eight from here. For the Titans to avoid the wooden spoon they will need to win at least one more game. I don't think this is that game.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 16

Result – Titans 44 defeated Sea Eagles 24

"Dia duit gach duine" i dteanga ní mo theanga féin,

Short’n’Sweet. Let’s do this thing …

Panthers vs. Storm @ Panthers Stadium
Probability @ 60-40
Ladder Position = Panthers
Bookies Favourite = Panthers

Panthers
"Very proud of the boys tonight. Canberra had a lot to play for and they definitely had the better of the start of the game so to be able to bounce back straight away and score that helped, and I think when we went down to 12 men that was the turning point, the way we responded to that. That galvanised the team and gave us a lot of confidence. Just a good win for our club all things considered," coach Ivan Cleary said.

Possession - 51%
Completion Rate - 74% (32/43)
Post Contact Metres - 554
Tackle Breaks - 33
Missed Tackles - 29
Errors - 10
Penalties Conceded – 5

Storm
"I thought we started the game really well and when we got to 14-0, I was probably hoping that the game was perhaps going to get too hard for the Titans. But to their credit they just kept fighting. It was a tough second half without Hughesy. He [Hughes] wasn't overly keen to go back on in the second half and when he's thinking that I think it is reasonably serious. It was a pretty good effort all around," coach Craig Bellamy said.

Possession - 52%
Completion Rate - 76% (29/38)
Post Contact Metres - 758
Tackle Breaks - 42
Missed Tackles - 43
Errors - 12
Penalties Conceded - 6

Verdict: Even missing Nathan and the Princess, the Panthers are rolling along as usual. The Storm have won a couple on the trot but they were against struggling sides. The Storm are missing players and they have an away battle against the best side in the competition. Logic dictates the Panthers win this. Panthers by 8.

Warriors vs. Bulldogs @ Mt Smart
Probability @ 40-60
Ladder Position = Bulldogs
Bookies Favourite = Bulldogs

Warriors
"Since I have taken over in this role that is probably the most disappointed I have been. I thought our attitude to defence was terrible. That first half - and even the second half - we just didn't want to get physical with them and that is an attitude thing. We are in a tough situation because we are living out of a suitcase and we have got four weeks to go, and we need to show a lot more that what we showed tonight," interim coach Stacey Jones said.

Possession - 42%
Completion Rate - 68% (22/32)
Post Contact Metres - 332
Tackle Breaks - 34
Missed Tackles - 33
Errors - 13
Penalties Conceded - 8

Bulldogs
“We were in a position to win the game and it’s disappointing we couldn’t get out of our own end in the second half. They were good enough to hold us down and we weren’t good enough to get out of there. If our ball control was a little bit better and a couple of decisions were made by us or by others, the outcome could have been a lot different at half time,” coach Mick Potter said.

Possession - 44%
Completion Rate - 61% (22/36)
Post Contact Metres - 401
Tackle Breaks - 23
Missed Tackles - 32
Errors - 14
Penalties Conceded - 6

Verdict: I had high hopes for the Warriors but it looks like they’re on tilt at the moment. I think they’ve only won once from their last 12 outings (2 from their last 15). Yikes! The Bulldogs seem to be doing better as evidenced by their competitive effort last week against the Cowboys. They were actually leading with less than 20 to go until the Cowboys scored late tries to win. If the Bulldogs repeat with some solid football they should account for the Warriors this week. My only query is that it’ll be at Mt Smart, and that may give the Warriors a boost. Not sure who wins this but I’ll flip a coin …. Bulldogs by 4.

Eels vs. Rabbitohs @ CommBank
Probability @ 40-60
Ladder Position = Eels
Bookies Favourite = Rabbitohs

Eels
"I thought that we stayed in the fight [in the second half], because they came at us early and got a try. We came away with what was needed at the back end of that half. Thought our control was really good and our discipline was good," coach Brad Arthur said.

Possession - 53%
Completion Rate - 86% (38/44)
Post Contact Metres - 703
Tackle Breaks - 36
Missed Tackles - 18
Errors 6
Penalties Conceded – 4

Rabbitohs
"We have got some big games and we have got some aspirations about how we want to finish the season. Everyone talks about the draw but the beauty of what we have got in the back end is that teams aren't going to influence where we finish. It is on us and every two points decides where we finish at the end of the year. I said to the boys before the game that at this time of the year it becomes about levels. Teams step up a level and other teams fall out the back door so it is up to us every week to step up our levels and make sure that when we get to finals we are playing the footy we know we are capable of," coach Jason Demetriou said.

Possession - 58%
Completion Rate - 76% (33/43)
Post Contact Metres - 439
Tackle Breaks - 33
Missed Tackles - 34
Errors - 13
Penalties Conceded - 5

Verdict: This week will be a real test for the Eels when they front up against the Rabbitohs. We will get to see whether they’re coming good at the right time of the year or not. Still no Moses so key players will have to stand up if they’re any chance against a Rabbitohs side that are in form. The Rabbitohs smacked the Warriors silly last week but remember it was the Warriors. The Eels will offer sterner opposition you would think. So, who’s gonna win this then? Both sides are capable (obviously). The Eels’ form the last fortnight has been excellent and they’re at home. The Rabbitohs have only lost one (by a point) in the last 6 weeks and struggle a little on the road. I’m going to go out on a limb here and tip the Eels by 4.

Roosters vs. Cowboys @ SCG
Probability @ 60-40
Ladder Position = Cowboys
Bookies Favourite = Roosters

Roosters
"I thought we played fairly well tonight. I thought our defensive pressure was quite good and we stifled them at different times. I felt like we dominated and played the way we wanted to play for 40-50 minutes there. I thought from Sammy Verrills to Lodgey to Jarred to Rads, they laid a platform and created a platform and then our outside backs jumped on the back of that," coach Trent Robinson said.

Possession - 50%
Completion Rate - 66% (32/48)
Post Contact Metres - 805
Tackle Breaks - 50
Missed Tackles - 37
Errors - 14
Penalties Conceded - 6

Cowboys
"I was really happy with how we kept our heads ten-nil down. I thought periods in that second half we were pretty consistent and strong through that mid-field, we had two tries taken off us but scored some nice tries in the end. I thought Taulagi’s try definitely went backwards. Even Muz (Murray Taulagi) who caught it on the wing had to reach backwards so that says to me it’s gone backwards. But we got what we needed to get done. We got the two points playing against a team who are high on confidence so to get back on the plane with two points in our kit bag, we’re very happy," coach Todd Payten said.

Possession - 56%
Completion Rate - 75% (30/40)
Post Contact Metres - 643
Tackle Breaks - 32
Missed Tackles - 23
Errors - 13
Penalties Conceded - 5

Verdict: Not exactly sure why the Roosters are favourites and why they “rate” higher than the Cowboys to be honest. Maybe it’s because the game is at the SCG or maybe their form against the bottom sides lately is a concern. This is a must-win game for the Roosters so expect them to give it their best. The Cowboys are too good to dismiss here and they will not make it easy for the Roosters. My head is saying the Cowboys but my heart is saying the Roosters. Yeah, let’s roll the dice and see how it plays out. Roosters by 6. Begurk! 🐔 Begurk! 🐔

Tigers vs. Sharks @ Scully Park
Probability @ 30-70
Ladder Position = Sharks
Bookies Favourite = Sharks

Tigers
"We've been consistent for a month and played some really tough football so really disappointed in our performance today. We've addressed it quickly that the NRL is a hard competition and last week's result doesn't mean you win this week. We were pretty poor today and it's disappointing in our last game out here in the Macarthur region. It's not the best feeling," coach Brett Kimmorley said.

Possession - 51%
Completion Rate - 78% (30/38)
Post Contact Metres - 673
Tackle Breaks - 34
Missed Tackles - 34
Errors - 11
Penalties Conceded - 2

Sharks
"We had a lot to overcome during the week, a lot of hurdles to jump there but we still found a way and whoever came in did their job, so I'm happy about that. More changes throughout the game as well so there's a lot of positive stuff with character and toughness but we need to play better than that. Lucky for us we had Lachie Miller there today who was a pretty handy replacement for us when Connor Tracey went off. You don't want to see that happen to anyone but Lachie got the job done again for us," coach Craig Fitzgibbon said.

Possession - 49%
Completion Rate - 70% (33/47)
Post Contact Metres - 610
Tackle Breaks - 34
Missed Tackles - 23
Errors - 19
Penalties Conceded - 6

Verdict: The Tigers have looked good lately, especially against quality opposition but then they turned in a pretty baffling effort last week. They had some chances but execution let them down. I really thought they should’ve beaten the Knights but still. The Sharks were good last week against the Dragons and given their obvious class edge, they should have no problem getting up this week. Sharks by 14.

Broncos vs. Knights @ Suncorp
Probability @ 75-25
Ladder Position = Broncos
Bookies Favourite = Broncos

Broncos
"We are still learning and they have got a pretty experienced side, they have been doing this for a while. We have just stuck our head over the cliff and they have been standing there, waiting for us. We will learn from tonight, certainly, all of us will - coaches included - about this time of the year. We have got the artillery there, it is just a matter of getting it right. Our starts have been poor, not just tonight but last week against the Tigers. We have been conceding points early and that is something we need to get out of our game if we are going to get to where we want to head to," coach Kevin Walters said.

Possession - 50%
Completion Rate - 81% (36/44)
Post Contact Metres - 605
Tackle Breaks - 37
Missed Tackles - 50
Errors - 9
Penalties Conceded – 6

Knights
"Definitely a relief for everyone... players, staff, families... it was ugly but I don't care, we got it done. I thought the two or three minutes before half-time and before full-time summed up what we want to be. We'll get some things wrong and it will be ugly at times but they fought hard in those periods and kept turning them away. It was a tough week but really happy for the players, they rallied and I'm proud of them," coach Adam O'Brien said.

Possession - 49%
Completion Rate - 65% (25/38)
Post Contact Metres - 632
Tackle Breaks - 34
Missed Tackles - 34
Errors - 16
Penalties Conceded - 2

Verdict: The Broncos seem to have dropped off in the last couple of weeks but you can’t write them off just yet. I think their recent efforts are just a slight stumble to be honest. They’re much better than the last 2 weeks show. The Knights finally got a win last week against an out of sync Tigers. To win here they will have to up the ante even more as the Broncos will be much harder ask. The Knights’ recent form is less than flattering and they will find this much tougher than last week. A shock loss to the Tigers followed up with a loss to the Roosters has me wondering if the Broncos can bounce back this week. Yeah, of course they can. Broncos by 16.

Raiders vs. Dragons @ GIO Stadium
Probability @ 60-40
Ladder Position = Raiders
Bookies Favourite = Raiders

Raiders
"I'm not walking away from that downhearted because there was so much effort the boys put in, but we just let ourselves down by ... the tries they scored, they're tries we stop every week. And just some one-on-one tackles, not making their shot. That doesn't scare me because we're better than that defensively. We started the game so well and I knew we would, we've been in really good form and that's not going to stem what we've got going. We're in survival mode and that's how we're going to play and we're not going to let that result tonight stem the way we've been preparing and getting around each other so we'll bounce off that and we'll go again," coach Ricky Stuart said.

Possession - 49%
Completion Rate - 75% (27/36)
Post Contact Metres - 513
Tackle Breaks - 29
Missed Tackles - 33
Errors - 9
Penalties Conceded - 8

Dragons
"We gave everything but at times we just didn't execute, catching kicks and then we had our chances in good ball we were just a little clunky at times. Over the past three weeks we have played some really good football apart from probably 15 minutes against the Cowboys at the back end of last week. That's why it's frustrating because we've played three really good sides and put ourselves in a position to win every game. We did a lot of things right to try and win that game today so we have to dust ourselves off and keep coming at it next Sunday [against the Raiders]," coach Anthony Griffin said.

Possession - 51%
Completion Rate - 77% (34/44)
Post Contact Metres - 564
Tackle Breaks - 23
Missed Tackles - 34
Errors - 12
Penalties Conceded - 7

Verdict: The Raiders won 3 in a row until last week when they failed to stand up to a Panthers side missing Nathan and the Princess. They should’ve done much better but they were simply outclassed. There’s a lot of talk about the Dragons’ season being ended with their loss last week to the Sharks but they still have a slim chance (albeit improbable) of making the 8. Gotta win all their games and hope other results go their way. They have an ideal opportunity to start on the road to finals footy but it’ll be tough against the Raiders who will be looking to gain some redemption after their dismal effort last week. The Dragons won’t throw the towel in just yet but yeah, I reckon their season is actually gone. Raiders by 8.

Titans vs. Manly @ Cbus
Probability @ 35-65
Ladder Position = Manly
Bookies Favourite = Manly

Titans
"We fought hard in that second half and were slowly looking OK and then a couple of errors and sort of fumbled our way to the finish line. A lot to like, but just not good enough. It's hard when we're sitting here losing but the boys are trying hard and physically they did an outstanding job. We seem to fight so hard and then have one thing that we don't do well ... it was another big learning lesson for us," coach Justin Holbrook said.

Possession - 48%
Completion Rate - 78% (29/37)
Post Contact Metres - 622
Tackle Breaks - 43
Missed Tackles - 42
Errors - 9
Penalties Conceded - 6

Manly
I thought we went in at half-time in pretty good shape, started the second half OK... but there was some tackles there we just had to make and didn't make them. We have got to win the next four from four [to make the finals]... I haven't done the math, but anything less is not going to work," coach Des Hasler said.

Possession - 47%
Completion Rate - 77% (28/36)
Post Contact Metres - 602
Tackle Breaks - 18
Missed Tackles - 36
Errors - 12
Penalties Conceded - 3

Verdict: The poor ol’ Titans have had an awful year this year. They’re sitting last for a reason. Mind you, their form of late has been a smidge better but still not good enough. Manly have lost their last 3 matches (Dragons, Roosters and Eels) but have an excellent chance to get back on track here. They’re one of those sides that never give up so you know they’ll bring the effort again this week. Commonsense says they’ll have too much of an edge here and should win this. Manly by 12.

Let’s finish off with another “Song of the Week”…

We’re all getting this way so I thought this “haunting masterpiece” might be appropriate.

https://youtu.be/04-9Gv0FMLg

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Until next week. Cheers 🐔 🐔 🐔

I’m so sad that Paul Green died RIP our premiership winning coach

This one really hurts

RIP Paul Green :-(

The Thinker's picture

Everyone will remember the 2015 grand final success for the Cowboys...and they should.

Less people remember the 2017 finals series. In the last round of the season the Cowboys needed results to fall their way to make the 8. They did. The Cowboys were outsiders in every game of that finals series. They played every game in Sydney. They were without their co-captains Jonathan Thurston and Matt Scott throughout. In the final, they lost their starting prop forward to a horrific leg injury in the first few minutes. After that, against a red hot Storm outfit, they ran out of puff...but it was an outstanding campaign.

The man could coach.

A tough weekend for you Big Pete. Manly losing to a team who hadn't won in their last 10 starts & your Red Devils getting hammered 4-0 last night on the back of last weekend's home loss...

BigPeteBx's picture

Morning Steely - both my teams have that Man about them and they certainly haven't lived up to it. I have no answers mate. First try of Sea Eagles disallowed and then DCE makes two mistakes that allows Titans two tries and in between that gives a penalty away. I was that annoyed that I turned the tv off with 12mins to go.
Red Devils - down 4 nil at half time and that was the end result. Hanged if I know Steely, but early days so far. Look at EPL ladder -they're last and in NRL the last team beat me Eagles. Yr Pool play Palace tonight UK time.

I guess u r smiling after Warriors win, even though you didn't pick them. We all at Thinker site should have known better for Dogs to make the slog across the ditch to play.
Anyway mate - keep well and nice hearing from you. No matter what the news.
Have a good week - Big Pete
