Round twenty selections

Newcastle Knight vs Wests Tigers – Friday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

With just three wins for the season and the worst attack in the NRL, the Tigers primary focus now is to avoid a wooden spoon and built toward a more competitive squad for next season. They also have no more byes for the year, while the two other teams near them on the ladder have one guaranteed 'win' remaining. A few positives for the Tigers though, with Koroisau returning from his jaw injury, and try-scoring machine Alex Twal back from suspension. The Tigers have won just one game away from home this season, and that was played underwater at a neutral venue. It was however, against a full strength Panthers. That win, and their big win over the Cowboys, proves that there is the kernel of a football team in there...somewhere. Meanwhile the Knights have named their Origin players (Best and J Saifiti) for this game - both should be in good spirits after a NSW win on Wednesday. The Knights have won four from seven at home this season, including some fair scalps (Raiders, Warriors). When they have lost at home it's usually a contest, including an extra time loss to the Panthers. The Knights won't have given up on a top eight finish yet. It will be hard from here, but a win here is a necessity or they can kiss that goal goodbye.

Verdict – Knights by 8

Result – Knights 34 defeated Tigers 18

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Brisbane Broncos – Saturday afternoon – Belmore Sports Ground

The Bulldogs will take some confidence out of their win over the Rabbitohs last week. A win is a win, but they still conceded 32 points, and you won't win a lot of football games when you do that. That said, I can smell an upset here. The Broncos pack will be without Haas, Carrigan, Flegler and Riki and their back three won't include Oates or Walsh. Someone else, and more than one, will need to put their hand up and make some metres for the away team on Saturday. They won't have much crowd support either, with the Bulldogs faithful usually filling the joint when they get a rare home game at Belmore. The Bulldogs have named Addo-Carr, but I thought he got carried away in a hearse late in the game on Wednesday night. Perhaps I was mistaken, but there's a watch on whether he'll be lining up in this. The Broncos are a clear favourite and rightly so, but if you were considering tipping an upset here, I wouldn't talk you out of it.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 2

Result – Broncos 44 defeated Bulldogs 24

Manly Sea Eagles vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – 4 Pines Park

It's 10th against 9th, but the Cowboys look a much more likely finalist this season than the Sea Eagles. Both teams are returning from a bye but the Cowboys but both teams had key players suiting up for Origin game three. All have been named for Saturday night, but it's worth keeping an eye out for late changes. If the Cowboys are a top eight team (and I think they are), the Sea Eagles are likely to struggle. Their last four games against top eight opponents (Sharks, Broncos, Panthers, Rabbitohs) have resulted in four losses. In the Cowboys last four games they've scored an incredible 177 points and conceded just 49. That's solid form, made even more solid when you consider that three of those opponents were the Storm, Panthers and Rabbitohs. Gus Gould thinks the Cowboys are the only team that can stop the Panthers winning three premierships in a row this season. I'm not quite in Camp Gus, but the northerners are coming good at the right time of the year. This won't be easy though. Visiting teams rarely come away from a Saturday night in Manly with the win. The game of the round.

Verdict – Cowboys by 1

Result – Cowboys 19 defeated Sea Eagles 8

Sydney Roosters vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday night – Sydney Cricket Ground

This game can just about make or break the season for the Chooks. They probably need to win this to have any chance of making the eight this season. They're giving themselves every chance, at a venue they play well at, and with the return of Suaalii, Egan Butcher and a pair of Smiths (not related). They've also named Tedesco and Collins. Both had enormous games on Wednesday, but given the importance of this game I expect they will both be playing if they can. The Storm have also named their Origin trio (Munster, Grant, Coates), and Warbrick has been cleared to play after overcoming a head knock. The Storm have an excellent recent record over the Chooks, and I expect their (mostly) well-rested forwards can lay the platform for a win. I expect the Storm haven't given up on a top two finish, so I can't see them taking this game (or any game) lightly.

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result – Storm 30 defeated Roosters 16

New Zealand Warriors vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – Go Media Stadium

This is one game where we dont have to worry about Origin players backing up this weekend but, ironically, this could be the game where late changes could have the most impact. Shaun Johnson is very very pregnant (at least his partner is), and he won't be playing if an overdue bub finally decides it's time to face the outside world. If he were to play, I'd confidently tip the Warriors in this, who would be particularly keen to deliver a better result at home after their last disappointing loss in Auckland. There's also doubts over Dylan Walker but he's been named too. Those question marks leave me leaning toward the Sharks, but with little confidence.

Verdict – Sharks by 1

Result – Warriors 44 defeated Sharks 12

Redcliffe Dolphins vs Penrith Panthers – Sunday afternoon – Kayo Stadium

The Dolphins picked up a much-needed win against the Titans last start, but only just. They haven't won successive games for quite some time, and it doesn't get much harder than this. The Panthers have named their Origin quartet for Sunday and I expect them to play. When the Panthers have rested players previously they haven't tried to hard that plan from anybody. Mind you, they've named an extended bench of seven for this game, so we can't assume anything. Notably that bench of seven includes Nathan Cleary, but seeing him on the field on Sunday would be a genuine surprise. The Dolphins haven't lost a game at this venue, the field where yours truly was conceived, born and raised. This is hard though. Really hard.

Verdict – Panthers by 14

Result – Panthers 24 defeated Dolphins 14

Parramatta Eels vs Gold Coast Titans – Sunday night – CommBank Stadium

All seven origin players have been named on Sunday - Gutherson, at least, should be pretty fresh after earning $10000 a minute for his brief stint in Origin 3 when the game was already over. The Titans have three key forwards on the Origin back-up, so I expect the Eels pack can win that contest on Sunday, particularly at home with their fans at their backs. Note that the Titans have won just two of seven games away from home this season, and one of those wins was against the team running last. The Eels were given a footballing lesson by the Warriors at this venue last start, but they had won their previous five games at CommBank in a row. That stint included wins over the Panthers and the Cowboys. I expect a return to form for the Eels with their key players returning to the line-up.

Verdict – Eels by 8

Result – Eels 25 defeated Titans 24

Greetings football fans

I have updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp after round 19. To get a perfect score for round 19, you needed to tip all five away teams - I'm not sure how often all the away teams win a round, but I suspect it's a rare event.

That said, congrats to Taka, GMAC, Tigerholic, JP92 and TheScribbleKing who all picked up perfect scores. Terrific work by you all.

If anyone notices any issues with the scores, just let me know as always.

All the best

55th minute of SOO3 and B. To'o headbutts the ball out of Collins' grip and lands in a blues player's hands upfield.
Ref makes the right call but (f#(en) bunker intervenes and calls a Collins knock on !!
The f#n Bunker needs to come and sit in my lounge chair because the vision here is crystal clear !!!!

Mary S's picture

You couldn't help yourself MGM, if the Bunker was in your lounge - they would have a black eye by now and wouldn't see at all!!

Cheers,

@Mary
Hahaha, you're right!

I know this is an NRL site , but I also know we are lovers of sport and some also favour EPL and others the Cricket...For me, I lean to Tennis.
For SO many years (2 decades+) the Big three have been Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal & Novak Djokovic - all in the same age group.
I believe I am watching the new guard while I stay up through the night watching Wimbledon.
The three youngsters that are hitting that ball so hard, so fast and so accurately that they are causing exciting upset results are :
Carlos Alcaraz (world no:1) 20yo ... Holger Rune 20yo ... and the older Chris Eubanks at 27yo .
Are there any other tennis fans in our ranks ?

MGM's picture

I just realized Medvedev is also 27yo ... he LOOKS so much OLDER !
So if I may amend my top three (to keep the age group close)
Jannik Sinner - 21yo

Apologies for the delays with my previews and tips. I'm a bit crook today but hope to be up and firing tomorrow.

Being a QLDer you might be surprised to hear me say I'm happy NSW won last night. WHY ? I've been watching all the negative tripe about Brad Fittler and his selections for SoO3...ha proved him right. So easy for them that just sit on the couch and criticize. Of course I would have loved a clean sweep but hey it sets it up for next year. Keeps the Origin hungry for 2024.
Hope you are both well and happy.

mark ashford's picture

Hey STEELY,
Your warriors are going well, In fact I've tipped them to get a win over the Sharks this weekend, please tell the boys not to let me down.
I'm so far down the Thinkers column I can't see the light at the top!

mark ashford's picture

Newbie, my friend from Perth.
Also sorry to hear your plans for a SE Asia retirement may be on hold.
Covid has upset so many things and now you. I understand your stand on vacs and that is your right. Hopefully things may change and you can persue your dreams. Anyway WA is not a bad place to live mate and can I be cheeky....do you have a lovely lady in your life? I'm sure there are some delightful girls there just waiting for your call. By the way my health is now OK all is good.

Mary S's picture

Hi Mark,
I certainly felt the better team (NSW) won on the night in Game 3.

Was I disappointed that, in comparison, some QLD players seemed unorganised/unenthusiastic - Most Definitely!! A clean sweep would have been really, really nice.

Cheers,
Mary

I didn't watch the whole game, getting old and need to be in bed!!!
But did see a loss of determination by our boys. Why not they had the shield in hand and the Blues had everything to play for. Maybe next year we can get a clean sweep

Steel Panther's picture

Evening Mark,

Always good to hear from you. I had tipped QLD 1-12 in my office comp so was disappointed with the result last night.

I've tipped the Warriors on Sunday too. Just hope it doesn't rain but weather forecast looks ok. Good to see that Shaun Johnson will go round again in 2024. The guy takes so much shit from all sides over here. Happy for the bloke.

Steel Panther's picture

Hi Thinker....hope you are feeling better.

Can I ask where has the twitter feed gone? Was a good source of info.

Cheers

And while I'm here....congrats on taking out the 'a' game this season Mary S.

🔊 @ MGM – sorry mate, meant to reply to you last week but clean forgot. Countries in SE Asia I was interested in were Thailand, Bali and Vietnam. Thailand changed some laws about certain things which has turned into a hill too high for me to climb. Plus they’re getting refugees flooding in up north I’m told who are bringing in all sorts of (criminal) problems. Bali is more expensive than the others but still a (very) remote chance. Vietnam was making it easy for expats but I didn’t get a chance to do a reconnaissance due to “that thing” 3 years ago. I’ve heard on the grapevine they’re not as accommodating these days with retirement visas so I’ll have to look into it some more to see what’s what. Still might go up there for a holiday though. Anyways, thanks for asking.

🔊 @ Mr Ashford – thanks for the kind words brother. Yeah, life deals you hands you just gotta throw in or hold onto. It’s all good, not the end of the world. The trick is to be “happy and content” within. Time spent wishing for and getting upset is time wasted as far as I’m concerned. Yeah, you can be cheeky if you want champ 😉. No lovely lady in my life at present. There’s been a few here and there over the years but for one thing or another it didn’t work out. I was let down every time and it just became too painful going through it time after time. Guess it wasn’t meant to be. Like I said, too much time hoping and wishing is time wasted. But hey, it’s no drama, I’m still happy and healthy (body & soul) so everything’s cool. Cheers bud.

OK, let’s do this thing …

Bye: Dragons, Rabbitohs & Raiders.

Knights vs. Tigers @ McDonald Jones
Probability @ 80-20
Ladder Position = Knights
Bookies Favourite = Knights

Verdict: The Knights are playing pretty decent footy at the moment and they’re at home. The Tigers are the complete opposite … Knights by 12.

Bulldogs vs. Broncos @ Belmore
Probability @ 35-65
Ladder Position = Broncos
Bookies Favourite = Broncos

Verdict: Kudos for the Bulldogs’ win last week but this will be hard against a Broncos team who should have players backing up from Origin … Broncos by 12.

Manly vs. Cowboys @ Brookvale
Probability @ 45-55
Ladder Position = Cowboys
Bookies Favourite = Cowboys

Verdict: While this game will be at Brookvale I can’t see Manly doing enough to beat a Cowboys team that are humming along beautifully at the right time of year … Cowboys by 8.

Roosters vs. Storm @ SCG
Probability @ 40-60
Ladder Position = Storm
Bookies Favourite = Storm

Verdict: The points differential can tell you a lot about how a team is travelling. The Roosters are sitting on -92 at the moment so that, as well as how they’re playing (injuries aside), leads me to one conclusion in their match with a very capable Storm outfit … Storm by 8.

Warriors vs. Sharks @ Mt Smart
Probability @ 50-50
Ladder Position = Sharks
Bookies Favourite = Sharks

Verdict: OK, the Sharks are favourites and they’re sitting 3rd but I keep reminding myself they only seem to be able to beat up on teams sitting outside the 8. The Warriors are in the 8 (one game behind the Sharks) and they’re playing at home … Warriors by 6.

Dolphins vs. Panthers @ Redcliffe (Kayo)
Probability @ 30-70
Ladder Position = Panthers
Bookies Favourite = Panthers

Verdict: The Dolphins had a great win last week but the Panthers are a whole new level for them on Sunday. The Panthers haven’t been at their usual best all year but are still sitting on top of the ladder. With the extra week off and players coming back from Origin this should be a conclusion that is forgone … Panthers by 12.

Eels vs. Titans @ CommBank
Probability @ 65-35
Ladder Position = Eels
Bookies Favourite = Eels

Verdict: The Eels were well beaten last week but they had legitimate excuses. With players coming back from Origin they should be able to handle a Titans team who should’ve won last week but couldn’t. This may not be easy but … Eels by 8.

Let’s finish off with another “Song of the Week”…

I used to love these guys back in the day. Quality from dawn to dusk. This one is no exception. Some hauntingly beautiful vocals from Oleta as well. Don’t forget to turn off the closed captions unless you want the lyrics in Spanish 😂.

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Cheers 🐔 🐔 🐔

Channel 9's commentary of the game last night was like listening to a knitting contest.

Footy Lover Dude's picture

I agree with the Thinker's tips ... Knights, Broncos, Cowboys, Storm, Sharks. Penrith and Parra. Hopefully this week will be a perfect tipping round for me, lol.

Footy Lover Dude's picture

Yeah the commentary wasn't the best, it's gone downhill since Rabs hung up his mic. Just mute the TV commentary and listen to the game on the radio whilst watching it, lol.

MGM's picture

@Footy Lover Dude
It's pretty hard to find a Radio Channel that is in sync with the TV broadcast.
The last time I remember doing that successfully was when Roy & HG used to do State of Origin matches, I think it was on TripleJ. . And it was great fun because they had nicknames for a lot of the players (and coaches). Names like "the Brick with Ears' and "the Fridge" and "the Grub".... it might even be where "Bellyache" came from for Craig Bellamy.
Good days !

Gummy Sharks's picture

Pathetic. Lucky we've signed a defensive coach or we'd have been flogged. Lucky he's only getting paid about $2000 per day to depart this defensive knowledge. Lucky he sees the attacking brilliance and brutish defence of Moylan and Graham when others only see two old has beens topping up their superannuation. Lucky he's taught Talakai to not rush up in defence week after week after week. Fitzy's reputation as a defensive coach is completely and comprehensively overblown. He's a palooka. Lucky Cronulla haven't signed him to a long term deal.

The Thinker's picture

@Steel Panther

Apologies for the delayed response.

The new owner of Twitter tweaked the dials recently, and that tweak has broken twitter feeds not just for The Thinker, but for everyone. I think he decided that twitter feeds were bad. If he changes his mind (very possible) and turns them back on, I will reinstate.

I liked having it there, too.
