Round nine selections

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Penrith Panthers – Thursday night – Accor Stadium

Unlikely anyone missed the news but Rabbitohs coach Jason Demetriou was asked to hand back the clipboard late yesterday, with assistant Ben Hornby taking over in an interim capacity. If there's a person out there that has a bad thing to say about Demetriou, I haven't met them. I wish him well. A fair challenge 48 hours later for the new coach, taking on the team that have won the last three premierships. Souths have won one game this year, and it's the only time they haven't had a score put on them. Last week it was 54, the most they've conceded all season. The Panthers probably won't rack up a score like that, but the return of Leota up front and Turuva on the wing makes them a stronger unit. Cleary will be better for the run last start too. Jack Wighton turned down more money from the Raiders and the Dolphins to sign with the Bunnies. It doesn't look like the best decision right now.

Verdict – Panthers by 20

Result – Panthers 42 defeated Rabbitohs 12

Manly Sea Eagles vs Canberra Raiders – Friday night – 4 Pines Park

I've long thought Jamal Fogarty was under-rated and under-appreciated, and last week we got a taste of what the Raiders will look like without him. I expected they would struggle, but the 40-0 loss surprised me, particularly in a milestone game at home. The milestone coach has made some changes to the roster, but there's only so much he can do. Their strength is clearly their forwards, and to my eye they have a clear advantage over their Friday night rivals in that department. Despite that advantage, they still have to score some points if they want to win, and that's something the Manly attack haven't had any trouble with this season. The Raiders only win away from home this season was way back in round one, and this looks hard. That Cherry-Evans successfully downgraded his suspension and is free to play makes it even harder.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 10

Result – Raiders 26 defeated Sea Eagles 24

Brisbane Broncos vs Sydney Roosters – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

From Las Vegas in round one to Bris Vegas in round nine, the two teams that have scored more tries than anyone else this season come together again in what should be the game of the round. The Roosters prevailed 20-10 but have struggled for form at times. That said, they really found their stride last week with a ten-try romp on ANZAC Day. The Broncos haven't lost a game at home this season, and Mam and Cobbo return after overcoming minor injuries. Something of a milestone for Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, becoming the fourth player to notch up 300 games for the Roosters. Interestingly, the Roosters have had more players reach that milestone than any other club. I'm old enough to remember when the Bondi club was jokingly referred to as the transit lounge. These days their players never leave, but when they do, they retire. The Chooks have had two extra days to prepare for this, and they know they're good enough. Predicting an upset here.

Verdict – Roosters by 2

Result – Roosters 40 defeated Broncos 18

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Wests Tigers – Saturday afternoon – Accor Stadium

The Bulldogs should be well-rested after the bye last week, and really do look like a team that are starting to find their feet. In their last three games, they've beaten the Roosters, lost by two points to the Storm in Melbourne, and carved up the Knights. The Tigers are an improving side, but they've only scored more than 17 points once this season, and that was way back in round two. The Bulldogs scored 36 points in their last game, while the Tigers have scored just 28 points in their last three games. Accor Stadium hasn't been a happy hunting ground for the Tigers either, losing in their last nine appearances at the venue. There is talk that Koroisau is going to play, but he's trying to overcome a back injury and I have my doubts. Dogs vs Cats. Woof! Woof!

Verdict – Bulldogs by 8

Result – Bulldogs 22 defeated Tigers 14

Gold Coast Titans vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium

The Titans scored their first win of the season, and get it an opportunity to thoroughly test themselves against a team that usually test them. The Storm had their first 'big' win of the season last week, knocking off the Rabbitohs on ANZAC Day. Impressive as it was, there's plenty of doubts about their opponent that day. Regardless, they've been winning the tight contests all season, and even if this is a contest (and I expect it will) they're the sort of team that just know how to win. Milestone games for Munster and Welch too - just another reason to pick the team that often pick themselves. Let's hope Munster doesn't celebrate after the match and do something silly on the Gold Coast on a Saturday night.

Verdict – Storm by 8

Result – Storm 22 defeated Titans 20

North Queensland Cowboys vs Redcliffe Dolphins – Saturday night – Queensland Country Bank Stadium

In round one the Cowboys travelled to Brisbane and were comfortable winners (43-18) over the Dolphins. That Dolphins team included Tabuai-Fodow, Farnworth, Flegler, Kenny Bromwich and Jesse Bromwich (who may be a late withdrawal on Saturday). The Dolphins didn't have Katoa in the halves in that game, and they're a better side when he's there, but he's s still a young kid with his best years ahead of him. Some important returns for the Dolphins with Kaufusi and Lemuelu back from injury - given the unavailability of at least one Bromwich brother they're big ins. The Cowboys weren't far off the Panthers last week in their first loss at home for the season. I'd be surprised if they can't get the points on Saturday. Outstanding young prospect Kulikefu Finefeuiaki gets to show his next club how outstanding he could be - the Cowboys didn't want to let him go.

Verdict – Cowboys by 8

Result – Dolphins 28 defeated Cowboys 26

Newcastle Knights vs New Zealand Warriors – Sunday afternoon – McDonald Jones Stadium

Every season there are teams I just cannot get my head around, and it looks the Knights will be one of those teams in season 2024. They did most of the little things right last week, and that was enough to get the win over the Dolphins. The little things are important and I credit them for that, but they just don't enthuse me as a side. Note that the Knights played the Warriors in round four where the Warriors prevailed 20-12. That Knights side included Kalyn Ponga, and that Warriors side didn't include Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad. The Warriors was singing in 2023, and they seem a little off-key this season. Even so, I think they're going well enough to win this, even in the dreaded Sunday afternoon timeslot at Newcastle.

Verdict – Warriors by 1

Result – Knights 14 defeated Warriors 8

Cronulla Sharks vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Sunday afternoon – PointsBet Stadium

What happens when a team that won 40-0 last week takes on a team that conceded 60 points last week? Something like this...

Verdict – Sharks by 19

Result – Sharks 20 defeated Dragons 10

Greetings football fans

I have updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp after round eight. Clearly we don't have a lot of Knights fan in the house - not one person tipped them to knock off the Dolphins on Sunday. Also, just two of us found the Titans over the Warriors. The top score for the round was 6 from 8, and there were heaps of us so I won't list them all.

As always, if you notice any issues with the scoring just let me know.

I'll have my previews and selections for round nine published on Wednesday.

Evenin Thinker - you might like to check the Great Johnny Awesome's Round 8 selections as I had a feeling he had tipped Knights and most likely the only one at that. It might have been that even though he is a Dragons follower, a Knight in shiny armour, he might be wary of☺
Cheers and keep well Mr Thinker.

Apologies with my previous Thinker - Awesome didnt pick Knights. Dolphins playing at home sure made it a tipsters selection option.
Cheers and keep well

Hey Frens,

My first week of holidays has been good. Planned on getting some “chores” done but I’ve been enjoying being on the net until the small wee hours of the morning and especially sleeping in. When you usually get out of bed at 4.30am, sleeping in until 8.30am is pure bliss 😂. OK, let’s do this thing …

Rabbitohs vs. Panthers @ Accor
Probability @ 20-80
Ladder Position = Panthers
Bookies Favourite = Panthers

Verdict: The Rabbitohs aren’t showing me any signs that they’re gonna come out of their horror form slump anytime soon so I just can’t see them being able to cause an upset here. The Panthers did well last week and they should win again. Panthers by 10.

Manly vs. Raiders @ Brookvale
Probability @ 75-25
Ladder Position = Manly
Bookies Favourite = Manly

Verdict: Manly were very good last week while the Raiders let me down big-time. Ah, the Raiders of old seem to be back again. They might bounce back a little but it would have to be a huge turnaround. I’m on Manly by 10.

Broncos vs. Roosters @ Suncorp
Probability @ 65-35
Ladder Position = Broncos
Bookies Favourite = Broncos

Verdict: Both these sides come into this match after convincing wins last week so it should be a cracker. The Broncos smashed the Tigers but the Roosters absolutely destroyed the Dragons (yes, I was definitely “over the moon” Mary 🐔). Yeah, I know we beat the Broncos in Round 1 but this is a different Broncos and they’re at home. Hoping desperately for an upset here but the Ponies should get up with the class they have. Broncos by 6.

Bulldogs vs. Tigers @ Accor
Probability @ 70-30
Ladder Position = Bulldogs
Bookies Favourite = Bulldogs

Verdict: The Bulldogs come into this “fresh” after their bye and on paper, are the better side. The Tigers seem to me to have slipped back into their old habits. Mind you, their opposition this week will be a lot easier than what they’ve had in the last 2 weeks (Panthers & Broncos). For that reason one could argue they might have a chance here. Regardless, I’m tipping the Bulldogs by 8.

Titans vs. Storm @ Cbus
Probability @ 25-75
Ladder Position = Storm
Bookies Favourite = Storm

Verdict: Yeah, the Titans finally got their first win last week against creditable opposition and don’t forget they did well the week before against Manly. Playing the Storm is gonna severely test them here but at least we’ll see where they’re at. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Storm don’t have it all their own way but they are just too classy and shouldn’t lose. Storm by 12.

Cowboys vs. Dolphins @ Townsville
Probability @ 70-30
Ladder Position = Dolphins
Bookies Favourite = Cowboys

Verdict: OK, the Cowboys lost last week but there was merit in that loss to the Panthers. The Dolphins on the other hand were disappointing in their loss to the Knights, which quite frankly surprised me. Based on what I saw from both these teams last week, I’d be silly if I didn’t go for the home side. Cowboys by 10.

Knights vs. Warriors @ McDonald Jones
Probability @ 40-60
Ladder Position = Warriors
Bookies Favourite = Warriors

Verdict: This is a (really) hard one to pick in my opinion. The Knights won against a side who have notched up some good wins so far this year and then you had a winless side jump up and beat a very handy Warriors who I thought would’ve done it easy. Looking at the formlines from last week you’d most probably go the Knights, especially seeing as they’ll be at home. I think I’ll give them one more chance, and if they falter then I’m off them until they win. Warriors by 4.

Sharks vs. Dragons @ Shark Park
Probability @ 75-25
Ladder Position = Sharks
Bookies Favourite = Sharks

Verdict: Last week the Sharks were absolutely brilliant while the Dragons were absolutely terrible. Could picking the winner here be as simple as that first sentence makes it out to be? Yeah, it could. Sharks by 16.

Bye: Eels

Let’s finish off with another “Song of the Week”…

I’ve only just “discovered” this woman. Yeah, I knew she’d been around but never really took an interest. This one is a good ‘un. Cheers.

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Cheers 🐔 🐔 🐔

Don't know if anyone has any interest in the issue of Braydon Trindall and the way the NRL or his club has addressed the matter ... it was under My radar until I spotted this article by Mark Levy for WideWorldofSports : https://www.msn.com/en-au/sport/other/nrl-treading-dangerous-path-as-tri...
...
One of OUR main gripes is inconsistecy in the governing of the game we all love.
It is of significant note that the only other offender in this article that could have / might have killed someone is Talatau Amone who had his contract terminated by both the NRL and St George Illawarra.
...
Please take the time to have a read of this.

Gummy Sharks's picture

Morning MGM and others. Getting a little over this issue of sportspeople (and commentators it would seem) doing whatever they like in social situations and not seeming to ever listen to that little voice in their head that sums up situations and offers alternatives. Worrying for me with Trindall is that apart from all the traffic offences and danger to the public was that he was caught going to a Cronulla training/ recovery session. Would anyone there, from coach or assistant coaches or other players or physios have said anything to him about his physical state? Would Cronulla have picked up on it and stood him down for being an absolute tool? Pretty sure they wouldn't have. It's about time these overpaid prima donnas realised that without football they're pretty much useless to society except in the building and security industries. My penalty for Trindall, as a long time Cronulla supporter, would be more along the lines of the Mitchell Pierce penalty mentioned in the article. Being a professional sportsperson would be difficult but then again, everybody elses job is hard as well. Basically, if these footballers are that stupid, give them a penalty even their little dinosaur brains understand. Rant over.

Evenin Thinker - going as well as can be. Not going too bad at present in tipping, but a long way to go for us here.
SoO will knock the belly out of many.
Our nice fresh days are with us now and then its as we know it, for the cooler climes of NSW.

Keep well good man

FancyPants's picture

Hello all. FancyPants here coming to you from Pittsburgh, USA. At first glance, Round 9 appeared to be filled with quite a few lopsided contests. Now with JD being sacked and Cleary being held out, does that change anyone's outlook of the result? Also, with being from the States, I'm not 100% familiar with the geographic locations of all the stadiums but have heard on several different tipping sites that rain will play a large role in the matches in and around Sydney this week. If I happen to ever wager responsibly, I try to stay away from those matches as that is an X Factor that could change the result of any match. Given that, it seems that my options are now very limited! Good luck to you all!

The Thinker's picture

Greetings FancyPants

It's terrific to see you here. Best of luck with your tipping and responsible wagering.

The weather should be pretty good for the games in Brisbane, Gold Coast and Townsville. Tonights game in Sydney shouldn't be too bad, but all the other games are likely to be played in the wet.

Resting Cleary tonight is an interesting move - the Rabbits might fire up if they think the Panthers aren't taking this contest seriously.

I think Wayne Bennett should stay at the Dolphins. He has them in the right direction(pretty amazing for the new team after 2 years). The fans don't deserve to have him cut and run all the time.
Just my humble opinion.

MGM's picture

@EsraStar
I too am concerned that the Dolphins probably won't have Wayne Bennett beyond this season . No-one else could have got the new club up and running and so immediately competitive the way Wayne has and two seasons doesn't seem Near long enough before putting them in the hands of someone else. Those shoes are just too big to fill!
Unfortunately, that's been the plan from the outset and not kept secret.
Even so, it defies logic.

Winning Formula : at least one upset per week.
My Formula : pick the wrong upset !

This week : Away Home Away Home Away Home Away Home

ADAM REYNOLDS !
What a Hero !
2nd game in a row , with only 3 of his limbs working , he makes what was , potentially, a try saving move (one intercept, one tackle into touch).
Sad for Reynolds, sad for the Broncos ....prognosis is not good for either.

“Hoping desperately for an upset here but the Ponies should get up with the class they have.”

Commiserations Broncos fans but very happy to be wrong and lose the tipping point in this one. Yes, I know I should’ve had more belief BUT “logic” took that belief away.

To be honest MGM, I didn’t honestly think we’d win. Your comment has got me thinking I should growacet and return to the blind loyalty plan 🐔 🐔 🐔. Anyways, I was otherwise engaged earlier so had to record the game but just got home (8.00pm) so I’m gonna settle back and watch it now 😉. Cheers.

Kasey Badger has gone to the top of my list...
of Referees that should come with TWO captain's challenges for each team !!

Unfortunately for those teams , there's still nothing they can do about the "non-calls" !

To be fair though , her linesmen today are just there for decoration.
