Round seven selections

Sydney Roosters vs Melbourne Storm – Thursday night – Allianz Stadium

The Roosters are at home for just the third time this season - their previous efforts at Allianz include a complete dismantling of the Rabbitohs and a competitive loss to the Panthers. Solid enough, but perhaps a shandy off spectacular. The win last week in Newcastle was impressive given the players they were missing. Special mention goes to Manu, Tupou and Suaalii - the three of them combined for a total of (checks notes) 812 metres with the ball in hand. Tedesco returns at fullback this week, meaning the two rugby-bound Roosters are shunted to centre and wing. For the Storm, this is just their second game away from home for the year. Their only other away game is the only game they've lost (to the team the Roosters beat away last week). Note that the Storm are winning, but not blowing teams away, with an 8-0 victory over Penrith their biggest winning margin in 2024. The Storm have lost Kamikamica and Moeroa from their pack, but Nelson Asofa-Solomona returns in timely fashion. Another close game is likely here, but I like the look of this Roosters pack on Thursday. If they can win that battle, and those Roosters in the backline can rack up metres with the ball like they did last week, they can get the points at home. They'll need to defy recent history though - they haven't beaten the Storm since 2019 and they've lost 8 of their last 9 against the purple machine.

Verdict – Roosters by 2

Result – Storm 18 defeated Roosters 12

St George Illawarra Dragons vs New Zealand Warriors – Friday night – WIN Stadium, Wollongong

The Dragons return to Wollonogong for the second time this season - their last visit saw them overcome the Sea Eagles, the team that held the Warriors to a rare extra-time draw last weekend. Just the one change to the side that defeated the Tigers last week, with the soon-to-be-Eel Lomax shifting from wing to centre to cover for the injured Jack Bird. I suspect Lomax is a much better winger than he realises he is or wants to be, but he gets another chance to show the Dragons, the Eels, and perhaps even the Origin selectors what he can do with a 4 on his back. Just the one change for the Warriors also, with Pompey joining the interchange to replace the injured Tevaga. The Warriors may not have won last week but they didn't lose. They haven't lost since round two, and the only two teams that have beaten them are sitting in the top two positions on the ladder. They're going pretty well, but certainly not at their best, but Warriors fans should take comfort from knowing that things could get better from here. Traditionally, the Warriors struggle a little away from home, but their two trips to Australia this season have seen a narrow (and unlucky) loss to the Storm in Melbourne and a very comfortable win over the Rabbitohs. If they can match those efforts that should be enough to get the points at the Gong.

Verdict – Warriors by 4

Result – Dragons 30 defeated Warriors 12

Parramatta Eels vs Redcliffe Dolphins – Friday night – TIO Stadium

The Dolphins face another test of their depth this weekend, with Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow injured (unnecessarily) and likely to be out for a month. Milford joins him on the sidelines (unnecessarily) thanks to a suspension. All teams have their depth tested, but for a new club it's a real challenge. I've no doubt they'll give their all, but I expect they'll fall short to an Eels side that appears to have worked out how to play without Mitchell Moses. Note the venue tipsters, but also note that the Eels have been taking a game to Darwin for a few seasons now. The venue (and weather) should be somewhat familiar.

Verdict – Eels by 14

Result – Dolphins 44 defeated Eels 16

Penrith Panthers vs Wests Tigers – Saturday afternoon – Carrington Park, Bathurst

Another home game away from home with the Panthers taking this game to Bathurst. They're fresh from a bye and will be keen to make amends after falling to the Sea Eagles when they last took to the field. In the last 3-4 years you could count the number of times the Panthers lost successive games on one hand - a fair chance they will bounce back on Saturday. Cleary is at least one more week away from a return, but Sorensen is back to bolster the pack. Luai struggled with a troublesome knee in round five, but has been named. The Tigers were disappointing last week against a weaker opponent than they face here. The genuinely promising Lachlan Galvin returns in the halves and that will help, but the Tigers have been struggling in attack in most of their games this season - it's hard to see them cracking the Panthers defence often enough to secure a victory.

Verdict – Panthers by 8

Result – Panthers 22 defeated Tigers 6

Gold Coast Titans vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday night – CBus Super Stadium

Cranky Des would love to notch up a win over the club he is most famously associated with, and he does have an imposing record as coach against the Sea Eagles. What Des wants and what Des gets are likely to be two different things on this occasion. The Titans will be without Campbell at fullback, with Sami pulling on the number one jersey in his place. Meanwhile the Sea Eagles welcome back Reuben Garrick, Jason Saab, Matthew Lodge and Nathan Brown this week. I'm sure the Titans will put in, but they're lacking the class here.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 10

Result – Sea Eagles 34 defeated Titans 30

Brisbane Broncos vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – Suncorp Stadium

Given the Raiders struggled to put away the Titans in Canberra last start, a road trip to Brisbane does look like an ominous contest. Especially so, given the Raiders are yet to win a game away from home this season. Their forwards match up pretty well against the Broncos, so I think they'll be more competitive than most might assume. That said, the Broncos comfortably repelled an early onslaught from the Dolphins in round six, then went on to win quite comfortably. Perhaps not quite as comfortable on Saturday night, but I think they'll get the points.

Verdict – Broncos by 8

Result – Broncos 34 defeated Raiders 10

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – Accor Stadium

The Knights are yet to win a game away from home this season, but this should be a little easier than the Cowboys in Townsville and the Warriors in Auckland. The Knights have scored more than 20 points just once this year (against the Dragons), and that's a barrier I think they'll need to break on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs have a longer casualty list than most but they continue to improve. Note that Blake Taaffe has been named on the bench and may be a late inclusion in the starting side. They gave the Storm a fright in Melbourne last week and they have enough attacking flair in their line-up to outpoint the Knights at home.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 4

Result – Bulldogs 36 defeated Knights 12

Cronulla Sharks vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon – PointsBet Stadium

The Cowboys have a line-up that should be winning this, but they continue to make costly errors and give away penalties that leave me throwing my remote at the wall. They also have an utterly abysmal recent record against the Sharks, and the Sharks have a solid recent record at their hideous home ground that even Scomo doesn't want to go to anymore. More Dally M points for Nicho Hynes this weekend.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result – Sharks 42 defeated Cowboys 6

Greetings football fans

I have updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp after round six. Note that we had our first draw for the season, and also note that no points are scored in this tipping comp for a draw.

Anything more than 4 from 8 was a good result for tipsters this rouind, and congratulations to more than a handful of you that picked 6 from 8.

Scott M (a Sharks fan) is on top of our tipping comp and the Sharks are on top of the ladder. In both competitions, there's a large pack of competitors not far behind.

As always, if anyone notices any issues with the scoring just let me know.

All the best

@ MGM,
Your comments last week were not too pointy or lengthy, and I, like Gummy Sharks, agree it was beautifully said and written.

It is unfortunate (being polite) that in changing times, some think it is their right to demand respect, but their actions often leave one with anything but respect for them.

Cheers,
Mary

Hey Frens,

Another 3 days and I’m on 2 weeks holiday. Woo-Hoo! Not going anywhere, too much house cleaning to do. Have another week in June and 2 weeks in August so might do something then. I’m thinking about going on a trip down south and check out some country cottages for sale in readiness to retiring early. Let’s see eh? OK, let’s do this thing …

Roosters vs. Storm @ Allianz
Probability @ 45-55
Ladder Position = Storm
Bookies Favourite = Storm

Verdict: I was giving my BBB a chance here but then saw who was refereeing (Ashley Klown). He’s gonna make it hard for us to win. Even these days, the Storm (classy) are always tough to beat. Do I jump back on my beloved Chooks or not? This is tough. I may very well come unstuck here but I think I’ll go with the heart this week. Roosters by 4. Begurk! 🐔 Begurk! 🐔

Dragons vs. Warriors @ WIN Stadium
Probability @ 35-65
Ladder Position = Warriors
Bookies Favourite = Warriors

Verdict: The Dragons did well last week but got a feeling it’s still below what’s needed to overcome a (very) consistent Warriors side. I do notice that Lomax is back in the centres so interesting to see how that unfolds. I think the Kiwis definitely have the edge in class. Warriors by 8.

Eels vs. Dolphins @ TIO Stadium
Probability @ 70-30
Ladder Position = Dolphins
Bookies Favourite = Eels

Verdict: The Eels surprised me last week. Are they starting to click or was that a one-off? The Dolphins haven’t really been tested so far this year (well, except for last week that is) and this week they’ll be missing the Hammer as well as Milford. Not sure which way to go here. This should make Baggy happy ‘cos I’m tipping his BOYS 😂. Eels by 4.

Panthers vs. Tigers @ Bathurst
Probability @ 75-25
Ladder Position = Panthers
Bookies Favourite = Panthers

Verdict: The Panthers return “fresh” after the bye and are all class. On paper they should be far too good for a Tigers side who lost the plot last week (no offence intended Tigers fans). Then again, stranger things have happened, especially playing out in the “bush”. Panthers by 14.

Titans vs. Manly @ Cbus
Probability @ 25-75
Ladder Position = Manly
Bookies Favourite = Manly

Verdict: We all know the Titans are in a world of pain at the minute and I’m thinking things are gonna get worse with no Jayden Campbell this week. I just can’t see any upside with these guys in the short term. Manly have some big guns returning and I really want to see how Matt Lodge performs in this one. Manly are really impressing me so far and they will be too good on Saturday. Manly by 12.

Broncos vs. Raiders @ Suncorp
Probability @ 70-30
Ladder Position = Raiders
Bookies Favourite = Broncos

Verdict: To my mind the Raiders have won against average opposition and lost to the better sides so far this year. I put the Broncos in the “better sides” basket so the Raiders might have their work cut out for them in this one. Playing at Sunny and with the talent they possess (I really like how Xavier Willison is going at the moment), the Broncos should get this done without much fuss. Broncos by 10.

Bulldogs vs. Knights @ Accor
Probability @ 40-60
Ladder Position = Knights
Bookies Favourite = Knights

Verdict: Not really sure about this one. I do know you could make a case for both these sides. The Bulldogs haven’t been that bad and nearly knocked off the Storm last week while the Knights are not impressing me with their consistency or their points differential. I wonder how Ponga’s hip will hold up this week? Yeah, this is a hard one (for me at least). On paper the Knights are a better side but I’m going against commonsense in this one. Bulldogs by 4.

Sharks vs. Cowboys @ Shark Park
Probability @ 60-40
Ladder Position = Sharks
Bookies Favourite = Sharks

Verdict: This should be a fairly decent game. The Sharks are cruising along nicely and sit atop the ladder. They’ve got some pretty handy players running around at home on a Sunday afternoon and that should help their chances. The Cowboys got found out last week which surprised me a little. Chad Townsend’s kicking game needs to improve and fast. Sometimes I’m not quite sure what’s going through his mind when I see the same predictable kicks. Anyway, never write off the Cowboys is all I’ll say. Even though I just said that, I won’t be tipping them. Sharks by 6.

Bye: Rabbitohs

Let’s finish off with another “Song of the Week”…

This was released some 44 years ago and still stands the test of time. Not sure if I’ve put this up before but if I have, I reckon it’s worth another listen.

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Cheers 🐔 🐔 🐔

Looking a forward to another great weekend of NRL.

Gr8 to see u having an excellent day Brad.

BTW - been meaning to enquire by now - r u over in NZ like two others I know of in Voyeur and Steel Panther?
Just asking, so we get to know whose who in the Thinkers Zoo.

Steely has a following of numerous codes/clubs that I have interests in and I guess he's grinding his teeth waiting for the end of EPL (UK Soccer) to see how his fave Liverpool ends up. My lads tipped them out of FA Cup and play semi-final this weekend.

Cheers and keep well

So cranky watching tonight's match.
Storm making so many silly errors AND copping plenty of bad calls from the dickhead in the middle !
Storm threw away their challenge after 3 minutes and they have needed it SO badly ever since and right to the now 76th minute.

@Mary S
Cheers Mary , I knew you would read it (you don't miss much on here) and wondered what you would think.
Happy Birthday Brad....
what a good age !

Morning All
Can someone explain why Schneider wasn't sent to the bin yesterday after taking Olam out without the ball? Tigers were up 6-0 at that stage and would have gone out to 12-0.

I know we are not in the class of the Panthers but the good teams do get the decisions going their way.

There have been some other poor decisions already this round, let's see what comes out of todays games.

Good luck to Markate 2021. Hope you've got a decent multi going and this doesn't jinx you.

I am in NZ mate, I'm from a small town called Waiuku, just south of Auckland.
I did see Liverpool got a W this morning, I don't follow the football but if I was going to support a team it would be Liverpool.

Thanks Brad - nice to know.
Steel Panther from there follows Wellington Phoenix, who are going well this year in A-League. I am a Sydney FC supporter as their left back comes from my town in NSW. If u r wondering where I live, it is the Home of The Great Race (V8 Supercars). Cheers mate and keep well.
