Game preview
Whatever the outcome on Sunday, the result can be framed as a redemption story, and in more ways than two. The Storm lost the 2024 Grand Final to Penrith, and the Broncos lost the 2023 Grand Final to Penrith. The Storm were competitive but not quite good enough, while the Broncos all but had their hands on the silverware, until Nathan Cleary stole it back with multiple moments of Nathan Cleary things. In 2021, the first of the Panthers four-peat, former Rabbitoh Adam Reynolds had an opportunity to tie the game late, but missed. Ben Hunt is back with the team he never wanted to leave. He's about to play NRL game number 355, but his career has a shadow hanging over it, thanks to a brief moment in the 2015 grand final. Hardly fair, and Hunt getting the Broncos over the line on Sunday would be my preferred version of the redemption story. The Storm have had an easier ride into the grand final, but they earned that right. Two games, both played at home, the first against an under-strength Bulldogs whose season peaked early in the year. The second against the Sharks, who did better than they often do, but are a team that typically fall short at the business end of the season. By comparison, the Broncos had to travel to Canberra and come from behind to beat the best team all season. Then they had to come from behind again, against the team that have won the last four premierships. The Broncos hadn't scored a point at half time against Penrith, but they didn't let Penrith score a point in the second half. In previous seasons the Broncos wouldn't have had the fortitude to fight back like that - this team is a little bit different.
The Storm were the last team to win a premiership before the Penrith reign at the top. Incredibly, just three players from that grand final victory remain in the Storm seventeen. That said, they're three important ones - Papenhuyzen, Munster and Hughes. Add Grant to that trio, and the Storm spine is the best in the business, by a stretch. They have the skills and the experience to win this, and in contests between these two sides in recent years, it's the Storm who generally prevail, and often by a space.
The Broncos are a juggernaut of the NRL, but it's been a long time between premierships for the biggest sporting club in the country. The last premiership was in 2006, against the Storm no less. That Storm team included four of the all-time greats - Smith, Slater, Inglis, Cronk. Still, the Broncos found a way. It was possibly the strangest team to win a premiership in a long long time. The 2006 Broncos had a forward pack that would compete today - Webcke, Civoniceva, Thorn, Thaiday, Carroll, Parker, Carlaw, Hannant. But almost every member of the backline played out of position. Lockyer, a fullback, played in the halves. Hodges, a centre, played at fullback. Hunt and Boyd, both fullbacks, played on the wings. Stagg, a backrower, played at centre. Berrigan, a centre, played at hooker and claimed Clive Churchill honours. Their halfback that day, Shane Perry, was a terrific local footballer, but still had a full time job away from football. He's the last halfback to win a premiership that didn't play representative football, but he didn't even have an NRL contract at the time and was working for match payments. He steered the team around that day and took down an opponent that included the Beatles of rugby league. Hard to fathom.
Many of us will be favouring the Storm to claim honours on Sunday, and rightly so. They deserve to be favourites and they do appear to have an advantage in those key positions. But the Storm have been inconsistent this season, and the Broncos have a rare kind of momentum. Thinker Manor is twenty minutes from the Broncos home ground, but I could hear that crowd in the game against Penrith from my joint. There's a strange kind of magic in the air, and the Broncos are feeling it. They'll ride the feeling, and they win this.
Verdict - Broncos 20 to defeat Storm 16
Result - Broncos 26 defeated Storm 22
First try scorer - Deine Mariner
Clive Churchill medalist - Reece Walsh
Wally Lewis - Grand Final selection (in bold)
Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or Thursday morning

One of our esteemed tipsters (thanks BigPete) has let me know that daylight savings kicks in on the morning of the grand final. I have updated the start time on the preview page to Sydney to 7.30pm. Check local guides for the start time near you. There's some chance the tipsters will get caught out again with the tipping page closing early. As always, just put your tips in the comments if you have to and I can sort things out from there.

To quote Connor MacLeod - "There can be only one"!
And , while you may well think I'm referring to Brisbane Broncos v Melbourne Storm , you would be only partly correct.
I am also referring to Our Own Grand Finalists, Mad Max and Footy chick, who have taken the thrill of the contest down to the wire by choosing one team each !
Best of luck to both of you and to both teams and to everyone on here for an exciting and entertaining match ... may the best team win.

I was going to back Gehamat Shibasaki to redeem himself tonight , but he's stuffed up already !

Walsh was very lucky there in the 20th minute not to go to the bin.

Well...that was quite the grand final. Three finals for the Broncos this series and they came from behind to win them all. Reece Walsh, who all but single-handedly got the Broncos over the Raiders in week one, delivered one of the most extraordinary performances by an individual in a grand final in quite some time. He wasn't perfect, but he had moments that were simply a joy to watch. The Broncos lost both halves in that game, and still won. An astonishing result.
And he's just turned 23.
I have tallied up the final scores for the tipping comp, but I'll give others an opportunity to let me know if I've made any errors that need attention before I announce our prizewinners. It looks like we have quite a few this year.
I will also get Mrs Thinker to draw out one lucky participant for the random tipster prize.
Thanks to everyone for taking part, and for doing so in such a positive and decent way. We're a good group.

Congratulations Footy Chick, you have an amazing footy brain and are the most decorated tipster in the Thinker Comp.
Well done Mad Max and Wally for being in the top 3 this year, no mean feat with the number of tipsters.
Well done to all those tipsters that stuck at it through good and bad, unfortunately for me this year was mostly bad.
Finally, thank you Thinker for running this tipping comp, I hope we can all go around again next year. I'm sorry that I didn't contribute as much as I normally do, sometimes life gets in the way.
All the best to all of the Thinker tipsters, have a great end of 2025, see you all in 2026.

Greetings football fans
I have had the final results for the season confirmed - congrats to all of those who finished on the podium, and thank you to everyone who took part all year.
Results are as follows:
1st place - Footy Chick - What can I say, Footy Chick is our Craig Bellamy. She has been tipping for 11 seasons now and this is her third outright victory. In those 11 seasons, she has only missed a top three podium finish three times. In a competition with 70+ entrants, that is mind-bogglingly impressive. Congratulations again, Footy Chick. You are a freak.
2nd place - Mad Max - Run down in the very last game of the season by one of the best. Congrats Mad Max. I believe you are still in high school, and its great to see some kids coming through and having a go.
3rd place - with Wally Lewis ineligible, we have a 4 way tie for third. Congrats to Bronco Legend, JK Bubble, Elizabeth and ScottySeahawk. Splitting $50 four ways isn't a lot of cash, so I'll up the prize to $80 and give you each $20.
Random prize winner - Before I dropped Mrs Thinker at the airport (back to school in the country while the rest of us try to survive at home without her), I got her to draw our lucky tipster for this season. Congrats to Gad, who wins $50.
I'll be in touch with all our prize winners via email to arrange the prizes.
Have a terrific off-season everyone. Unless I fall down a well or similar I'll be back with my Little Helper to do it all again in 2026.
All the best

Congratulations to all the winners! It was definitely a tough year!
With that, I want to let you know I will be taking a break from tipping for a while, life has just become too busy and I struggle to even find time to watch some of the footy games let alone tip with any measure of confidence.
Thanks for the last 7 years everyone, especially The Thinker for offering such a wonderful place for us all to hang out and talk footy, yours and your family's efforts have been a highlight in my NRL journey. Thank you, all the best.
