Round eight selections

Brisbane Broncos vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium

Following successive losses, the Broncos will be hoping to steady the ship and their season on Thursday night, but they face a test. The Bulldogs remain undefeated and have conceded just one try in their last three games. Reece Walsh is out with a knee injury for at least a month, with Cobbo slipping into the number one jersey. A pair of more than handy inclusions in Mariner and Piakura bolster the team, but they could use some bolstering. Just the one change for the Bulldogs - Hayes replacing the injured Todd on the bench. Trevor Gillmeister (childhood hero of The Thinker) famously pointed out that if your opponent doesn't score they can't win. The Bulldogs are checking the maths on the field, and he was right.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 8

Result – Broncos 42 defeated Bulldogs 18

Sydney Roosters vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Friday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

Basically every game is an ANZAC game this round, but this is the blockbuster that started them all, and it's still the best. Last year, the Chooks won this battle 60-12, and that's a scoreline we're ulikely to see this time. Some changes for the Chooks following the loss to the Panthers last week - Young drops out, with Nawaqanitawase shifting to wing and Smith returning in the centres. With Nat Butcher injured, Leniu starts at prop. Crichton and Egan Butcher return this week to bolster the pack. The only change for the Dragons is Finau on the wing replacing the injured Mathew Feagai. This is one of those games where recent form can mean little - both teams will lift for the occasion, but who lifts the most? The Chooks have won 4 of the last 5 ANZAC Day contests, and I'm leaning their way again.

Verdict – Roosters by 4

Result – Roosters 46 defeated Dragons 18

New Zealand Warriors vs Newcastle Knights – Friday night – Apollo Projects Stadium, Christchurch

The Warriors have won four of their last five, and their one loss was to the Storm in Melbourne (a team and a town where they almost never win). A few handy returns to the side that held out the Broncos last start, with Nicoll-Klokstad at fullback and Berry in the centres. With their returns, Tuaupiki shifts to the wing and Capewell returns to his usual habitat in the back row. No major changes for the Knights who are staring down the barrel of five straight losses. Their last two games were played in their preferred timeslot (Sunday afternoon) at their preferred venue, and they were soundly beaten in both. In the two away games prior to that they lost by 20 to the Bulldogs and by 20 to the Titans. On form there's no reason why we would see a different result in Christchurch, where the Warriors have an enviable record.

Verdict – Warriors by 14

Result – Warriors 26 defeated Knights 12

Melbourne Storm vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – AAMI Park

The Storm haven't lost a game at home this season, and that's not likely to change in the ANZAC Day game, a contest that often brings out something close to their best. When these sides met in the ANZAC Day game last year the Storm racked up ten tries, and while that seems less likely, they'll no doubt bounce back from the disappointing loss to the Dolphins last week. Meaney returns and replaces the injured Howarth, while Kamikamica is replaced by Vaalepu on the bench. Bennett is shuffling his troops around this week, hoping to find a combination that shines. Mitchell is at fullback, with Gray coming off the bench. Sullivan returns in the halves with Walker, with Dodd out of the seventeen. I'm not convinced that's the best positional options they have, but who the heck am I to question the best coach rugby league has ever seen. If it works there aren't enough superlatives, because the Rabbitohs have never won a game against the Storm in Melbourne...ever.

Verdict – Storm by 10

Result – Storm 24 defeated Rabbitohs 16

North Queensland Cowboys vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday night – Queensland Country Bank Stadium

The ANZAC Day hits differently in the Garrison City, so expect the Cowboys to turn up with their boots on. Bateman returns in the back row and the whole squad should be feeling fresh after the bye last week. Some handy inclusions for the Titans with Fifita and Khan-Pereira back this weekend. That will help, but the Titans record in Townsville is very poor (1 win from 13).

Verdict – Cowboys by 7

Result – Cowboys 50 defeated Titans 18

Penrith Panthers vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday night – CommBank Stadium

Are the Panthers back? Maybe, but we don't want to get too carried away after a win over the team that are currently second last. A few things went there way in their win over the Chooks, but a win is a win, and they'll take it. A few key outs for Penrith, with Kenny and Garner unavailable. Geyer returns on the bench for his first game of the season. The Sea Eagles are in a slump of their own, but the return of their enigmatic fullback (Trbojevic) changes this team a lot. The return of Aloiai helps too, with Sipley unavailable. There are murmurings that Cherry-Evans is down on form since his announcement that he won't be with Manly next season, and that's just the sort of noise he's likely to respond too positively. I'm sure the incumbent QLD halfback would love to notch up a win over the NSW halfback, and I'm keen to tip an upset here. Perhaps a golden point game with a field goal shootout between two of the best in the business.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 1

Result – Sea Eagles 26 defeated Panthers 10

Canberra Raiders vs Redcliffe Dolphins – Sunday afternoon – GIO Stadium

At the start of the season, the Raiders were the favourites to win the wooden spoon. I suggested that was preposterous at the time and it's nice to know I got at least one thing right this year. Top three currently and with abye up their sleeve, they look every inch a top eight side and it wouldn't surprise me if they finish top four. No changes to the team that beat the Titans last week, and they'll be looking forward to just their third game at home this season. The Dolphins surprised almost everyone last week with a dominant and very entertaining win over the Storm. Kaufusi has been sidelined and he's hard to replace, and while Plath has been named there's some chance he may not take the field on Sunday. Potentially the game of the round here.

Verdict – Raiders by 4

Result – Raiders 40 defeated Dolphins 28

Wests Tigers vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – Leichardt Oval

It's hard to get a read on the Galvin situation at the Tigers - he was dropped last week but returns this week. I suspect Galvin and his Manager were hoping for an early release from their Tigers contract, and this could the Tigers way of saying "not so fast". In any case, I suspect they are a better team with Galvin the halves, and I suspect they may have won last week if he played against the Eels. How the team responds to the "bullying" claims is anyone's guess. It wouldn't surprise me if they cause a boilover here, but I'll play things safe and tip the Sharks.

Verdict – Sharks by 7

Result – Tigers 20 defeated Sharks 18

Greetings football fans

I have updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp after round seven. Another difficult round of tipping, and if you managed to get half the games right you did pretty well.

A shout out to EelsGal who was our only tipster that scored 6 from 8. But wait, one tipster somehow found 7 of 8. Congrats to Wild Oscar - our only tipster that found the Dolphins on the weekend. His only miss...the Broncos against the Warriors.

If you notice any issues with the scoring just let me know.

A short turnaround this week, but I should still have my previews and selections for the ANZAC round published on Wednesday.

All the best

Just finished watching a replay of Tigers v Eels.
Mitchell Moses is BACK! ... thank God !
Didn't even notice Dylan Brown tonight anymore than I've noticed him in the Eels' last Five Thrashings and one narrow 1 point win... $13Million...HA!
My advice to Mitchell - employ Dylan Brown's manager!
Not wanting to put too much pressure on his foot , Moses only took on one conversion kick (arguably the most difficult of the seven , (Lord knows, Sean Russell wasn't going to get it!) and it never Looked like missing!
Now for the match itself and the PITIFUL officiating :-(
I can't be bothered going into too many details anymore than you guys want to hear them .... suffice to say - What a FIASCO !
It's best summed up by two incidents and quotes on each from the Fox commentators I heard on Kayo ...
On the Ref (Liam Kennedy) - @58:00 -as S.Toa reaches to catch the ball , I.Iongi tackles him .. and Kennedy blows his whistle.
Greg Alexander- "Does Anyone expect him to go to the bin for That?" "short answer , NO" .... "Does anyone agree with that sin-binning?" ... "(unanimous response ,including Cooper Cronk).. NO!"... Fact is , the whistle should never have been blown.
For context , just 12 minutes later @69:52- the moment Addo-Carr reaches to catch the ball , Turuva tackles him ... no whistle ... just play-on.
These two tackles were almost identical in that players are tackled as they reach for or have just touched but not yet taken control of the ball .. It happens a Lot ... No Whistle .. Never a Binning.
And for an IDENTICAL EXAMPLE (not almost) , go to D. Edwards tackling J. Tedesco @74:05 on Sat night, when everyone was singing Edwards' praises for his Magnificent Defensive Effort! (this is not the @21:32 "defensive effort" where he should have gone to the BIN!)
...For a bit more context - in the 10 mins the Eels were unjustly outnumbered , Tigers scored 2 tries.

...... On The Bunker (Adam Gee) - @40:42
Sam Fainu and J.Luai tackle K.Tuilagi ....Tuilagi senses something and bungs on an academy award performance for an injury that Never Was!... Maybe we can excuse Liam Kennedy for falling for it , but when the Bunker reviews and puts Fainu on report it's just a joke!!... Here's the comments -
Andrew Voss, during the replay- "Oh, it's fine , his hip hits the ground"
A.V. , when bunker rules that it's on report - "He can not be on report, he CANNOT be on REPORT !"
Greg Alexander - "Who in the bunk ... WHO in the Box is saying that was a hip-drop ?!"
A.Voss - "NOTHING'S landed on his leg! That's outrageous, and now it's a penalty conceded?!... He's to be Congratulated, the defender, for NOT landing on his leg!"
Both commentators could see it clearly , all of US could see it Clearly (from our RECLINERS!!) and the Match Review Committee when they waste their valuable time on this will SEE IT CLEARLY ! ...
... So ....Let's all watch and see , once the MRC have looked at this , what , if Anything , happens to Adam Fu(k!ng Gee ..... and, for context , just 49 SECONDS after play resumed, guess who charged into the line and ran strongly through it to score a try without ANY sign of a limp , before or after? ... 2025s Academy Award Winner , that's who! .. and the quote from A.Voss - "Try to Tuilagi, and that makes a Farce of the report , to be honest"
I really hope Fainu's defense team makes that point when they are addressing the Committee , because Adam F#n Gee has wasted not a small amount of their time and money also.
I'm left with one serious question regarding Adam -
IS HE BLIND ?
Let's see what they do with him.

Greetings football fans

Word is filtering through that the NRL and the WA Government have reached an agreement on a new NRL team from 2027 - the Perth Bears.

Still needs agreement from the existing clubs and the players association...but it's close.

If the Perth Bears get established, there will be a lot of travel then, particularly for that team, Qld teams and NZ.

Time difference through daylight saving at the start of the season, will be will be interesting!!

Cheers,
Mary

And,Mary,,not forgetting the PNG team as well. I predict the venture will fail within 4-5 years,if not sooner.

No , the Panthers are Not back and I'm so happy to see you tipping Manly , Thinker.
I went with you (and Wally and Gummy) on this because I doubt the Panthers would have won last weekend without the ref and bunker looking the other way every time Tedesco was tackled without the ball (etc, etc).
But as I started to type this I thought I'd check to see who's officiating the Panthers match This week . .... Kasey Badger is in the middle and I think she's very good with the whistle ... but then I saw who's in the box with authority to over-rule her .... lifetime member and son of a gun Ashley Klein !
So I scrambled to get that link of yours back up and I'm now on Panthers.

Bronco Legend's picture

Hi Thinker,
Seriously can't believe my team the Broncs are leading undefeated Dogs 34 to 0 at half time, what the hell is going on? Hoping they keep it up in the second half and don't loose it.
Cheers.

The Thinker's picture

@Bronco Legend

I had to duck out to collect one of the Junior Thinkers who was working like a Japanese beaver at one of the fast food joints just outside the stadium. It was 18-0 by the time we got home.

Stunning first half performance from the Broncs.

Not sure what to make of the Dogs - struggled in the horrid conditions, first time they've left Sydney this season, fairly easy draw up until this point. A bit of all three perhaps.

Steel Panther's picture

How Tupouniua did not go to the bin last night for lifting his knee in the tackle is beyond belief, especially since it connected with the head of his opponent.

Dogs discipline let them down badly. The conditions were the same for both sides.

MGM's picture

Steely,
Tupouniua played like a grub all night long .

Esra Star's picture

Ahh,,i give up. It's on again. The first try to the Roosters was at least 1.5 meters forward and the linesman was right in ling. FFS!!

MGM's picture

HERE WE GO !
Not even 3 minutes in , and Roosters are awarded a try off a Forward pass from Tupou.
and ch9 idiots are all saying how Brilliant it is.

Esra Star's picture

See above,lol.

MGM's picture

@Esra
Haha, yep saw that only after I posted!
I don't know if you (or anyone else reading) have access to replays ... on Kayo I can click on slow-mo and pause at exact moments. ... ... but the bunker can do WAY better than that ... ...... They say they can't rule on it..... I say BULLsh!t ..... ... They can rule on knock-ons and which way a ball has gone in other scenarios . . . . They say they tried it for a while and too many fans/viewers objected to that level of intervention and they were losing followers....... They are losing a lot more by letting this plague go unchecked.
It should at least be part of the review after a try has been scored.
If I can review it on Kayo and be 100% sure , then Why the Hell can't they??
Sometimes it's not so easy to tell , so give those ones the benefit of the doubt , by all means .... but all those others..... stOp making bUllsh!T excuses and Give us a Fair Game you hand-wringing , mealey mouthed Mother######s !!!

MGM's picture

Too Harsh?
In the example Esra and I are complaining about you can pause at 2:32 and see clearly that Sandon Smith is almost a metre in front of Tupou whilst Tupou still has one hand on the ball.
This is Not hard to adjudicate.

MGM's picture

Another part of the problem is lazy/unfit linesmen.
Dave Munro was NOT in line with the play... he was 5 metres back and just trotting along , and the kick-off was only 2 f#ng minutes ago!

MGM's picture

Also easy to adjudicate was South's 76th minute "try" that on replay clearly shows Jye Gray release the ball just before the 10mtr line and Wighton catching it 1.5 to 2 metres after the line.
Easy to spot on reviewing the try.

What REally gets me is the commentators ignoring what's on the screen for all to see and saying instead "how skillful","what a great pass".
They must be under orders not to create controversy if a try has been already given .... they pretend to not see it and keep up the hype and somehow they succeed ... even though it's right there in front of us!
..... AAARRGH!

Gummy Sharks's picture

Agree with all said MGM. Have thought for a long time that all concerned, eg refs, linesman, commentators have been gagged from doing/saying anything that puts the game into disrepute. The same system is implemented in racing as well. Ironically, both run by the same bloke.

MGM's picture

Soooo ...... none of you watched either of the two Saturday matches ? ..... Nothing to say ??

... It may be frivolous , but I'm looking in to suing the NRL for the undue and excessive stress they are causing me ....... thinking of making it a class action ...... All are welcome.

Lots of sin bins and on reports this round.

I hope this is temporary and they wanted to flex their officiating muscles before Magic Round.

It's been a bit of a punish at times this weekend.

I was watching the Cowboys v Titans game live and cringed at the forward pass Tino to Fermor and my first thought was for your wellbeing haha.

A horrific miss indeed by the officials but how many times do you have to stop the game to review something to the deteriment of the game. Most passes are flat or line balls and in my opinion there are too many to continually stop the game. Before we know it, it will be like the American football.

Agree with the Thinker's concern about all the sin bins. As a viewer I want to see 13 v 13.

a's picture

Yes it’s way to cringe sin bins

MGM's picture

@Steel Panther
Thanks for your concern, mate .. haha.
I want the game to flow as much as you and I'm not calling for "continual stoppages" Steely. .... It's when a try has been scored and the game is stopped anyway , and 6 points are in the balance .... If a try from BLATANT fwd passes like this can't be disallowed then the NRL HAS TO make a change. ... this is Not a one-off Steely.

And I'm also with you and the Thinker in wanting 13 v13. .... But in the middle of a crackdown on high contact , how's THIS clip for F#n inconsistency and a protected species :-
