Round four selections

Parramatta Eels vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Pirtek Stadium

Does anyone remember Daryl Millard? I'm not seeing a lot of hands, but Daryl is back in the NRL this weekend, replacing Dylan Walker in the centres for the Bunnies. The last time he played in the NRL was in 2009. He's been busy in the meantime, plying his trade in the south of France with the Catalans Dragons - and who could blame him. The Bunnies coach, having studied at the esteemed Bellamy College of Fine Arts and Rugby League, knows how to find troops to slot into the system seamlessly. Millard will do just fine. The Rabbits were below their best last weekend, but were still good enough to beat an in-form opponent pretty comfortably. Parramatta will lift for the big occasion at home but they need to. I could be tempted into backing the Eels with the handicap start, but we have to keep tipping the Rabbits until they give us enough good reasons to stop. Right now I can't even think of one.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 8

Result - Eels 29 defeated Rabbitohs 16

Wests Tigers vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

Tipsters note the location of this Tigers 'home game'. Two of the more popular Sydney clubs will draw a decent crowd but there'll be no shortage of blue and white in the stands. The Bulldogs bring an unchanged line-up from their victory on the northern beaches (literally). Brett Morris has taken to the custodian role at the Bulldogs with gusto, and at this early stage in the season he's looking like the buy of the year. The Tigers, much like last season, have started the year well, but face another tough test here. Given the extra two days preparation for the Bulldogs I'm tipping them with some confidence, but I'm not expecting a runaway victory. I'm expecting the Dogs to test the Tigers left edge defence throughout - watch for Brett Morris sniffing around in support when the time is right.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 8

Result - Bulldogs 25 defeated Tigers 24

Newcastle Knights vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

There is a saying in sport - you can only beat the opponent in front of you. The Knights keep doing just that, but doing just that is about to get a lot harder. The Knights scraped home against the Titans, and a week earlier the Panthers beat the Titans 40-0. The Knights just beat the Cowboys, and on current form I'd expect the Panthers to tear the Cowboys apart. A parochial crowd in the Hunter and the sheer size of the Knights across the park keeps them in this contest, but at some point I expect this exciting Panthers backline to fire. Moylan, Mansour, Whare, Idris and Zelezniak - if that isn't the best backline in the NRL it will be by seasons end. The oldest of those five is 24 - we'll see some very exciting football from that group in the years ahead.

Verdict – Panthers by 8

Result - Knights 26 defeated Panthers 14

Cronulla Sharks vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday afternoon – Remondis Stadium

14th plays 15th and the one positive thing I can say about this game is that it will be close. In the end the team that throws this game away the least will prevail. I'm not sure that makes a lot of sense but I'm sticking with it. Kane Elgey gets a chance at halfback for the Titans and I'm sure those big Sharks forwards will let him ease into the game gently. Hyuk Hyuk Hyuk. Ben Barba is out for the Sharks with Wade Seccombe pulling on the six jersey - I doubt it will fit. If you're going to miss one game of footy this weekend I suggest it should be this. Home side by two points, on the back of a silly penalty from Greg Bird or Dave Taylor or both.

Verdict – Sharks by 2

Result - Titans 24 defeated Sharks 22

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday night – WIN Stadium

Keiran Foran and Jamie Lyon return for the Sea Eagles, and they are a much more balanced outfit as a result. They still look one prop forward short of a football team, but I could say exactly the same thing about the Dragons. A lot can change through the course of a year, but it's hard to see either side battling it out with the big guns at seasons end. Manly are still a top eight side, but they'll need to be winning games like this to get there.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4

Result - Dragons 12 defeated Sea Eagles 4

New Zealand Warriors vs Brisbane Broncos – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

Three games down and I haven't got the Broncos right yet, so this prediction should come with a health warning. I'm a bit keen on them here. The Broncos only loss this season was to the Bunnies and there's no shame in that. Their win last week was bordering on clinical, and while everyone is focussing on how poor the Cowboys were, few have given much credit to the Broncos for winning. Consequently they're outsiders across the ditch and the Broncos do love the underdog tag. Ben Hunt was back near his best last weekend and Milford improves every week. All we need is those Kiwis in the Broncos pack to lift in their homeland and give the Broncos backline a platform. Note that Tomkins is out for the Warriors - a major blow.

Verdict – Broncos by 8

Result - Broncos 24 defeated Warriors 16

Sydney Roosters vs Canberra Raiders – Sunday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

I have a large piece of timber at home. I keep it next to the couch in the TV room at 'Casa del Thinker'. It's there because about once a month I tip the Raiders and convince myself to sit down and watch them play. On the opening whistle I retrieve said block of wood and rest it on my lap. I then spend most of the 80 minutes that follow banging my head into it. You'd think I would learn, but the damage to my cerebral cortex caused by season after season of baffling losses by the Raiders has left me unable to learn much at all. Needless to say the timber and my cerebral cortex got quite the workout last Saturday night. I'm still hurting. Raiders don't play em much gooder....me must tip em Roosters.

Verdict – Roosters by 14

Result - Roosters 34 defeated Raiders 6

North Queensland Cowboys vs Melbourne Storm – Monday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

Here comes my Tony Abbott impersonation. "The Cowboys...are favourites....to win this game. In this game..........the Cowboys...........are favourites..................to win". Like most things Tony Abbott says, it doesn't matter how many times I hear it I simply can't believe it. The Storm destroyed the Sharks and the only change to that line-up is an extended bench. I'm stunned and I'm lost for words, except to say that I wish Antonio Winterstein all the luck in the world in his return - a try would be nice.

Verdict – Storm by 10

Result - Cowboys 18 defeated Storm 17

Hey guys, here goes my tips for the week:

Rabbitohs - The Bunnies have been in great form so far and I can't see that changing against an inconsistent Eels side.

Bulldogs - Tigers are a great upcoming team but with no Woods and a great Canterbury side up against them I see the Doggies taking this one out.

Knights - I hate to tip against my beloved Panthers but something tells me without Soward and Segeyaro they will not be at their best.

Titans - They surely have to win at some point, hopefully its against Cronulla this week.

Manly - Although they have only had one win this year it will take more than that for me to tip them against an inconsistent Dragons side.

Warriors - The Warriors always perform when they play the Broncos so with that fact plus the venue I'm tipping the Kiwis here.

Roosters - too good for the Raiders, pretty easy choice here.

Cowboys - Like many have said, they are the favourites at around $1.88 and I think they could finally get a win here.

Good luck everybody!

EVERYBODY GOT THEIR TIPS ON TIME

The Thinker's picture

It looks like everyone is here. Thanks for getting your tips in on time. I've closed the submission forms for the round.

Good luck everyone and have a great weekend.

a's picture

And hope the Cowboys win

Will Smith's picture

Ok.. i give up. Its gonna be Knights. Sorry panthers.

Coach Potato's picture

Cows into $1.78. So much confidence for a team that is showing so much bad form and openly admitted they are lacking in condifence. If they do happen to turn things around 'on cue' and the hot Storm turn cold 'on cue' then that would be some kind of forecasting from each and every betting agency out there. My thinking is more money equals big punters have moved in. Although what big punter in their right mind takes a punt on the hapless Cowboys over a clinical Storm? (Unless they've been reassured)

Coach Potato's picture

Cows lacking in defence not to mention *Con-difence !

Chi Spurga's picture

Re:- Cowboys v Storm.

If the Cowboys lose this one they'll be 0-4 with games against the Panthers, Rabbitohs and Warriors to follow.
Anyone think they'd start 0 - 7??? Therefore, I think everyone is just having a "Hopeful underdog" wager and it has made them Favs ( False Favs ). They lose this one and it gets alot harder.
The Cowboys won the only meeting between these two last season 22-0 in Townsville.

Just my opinion.

Coach Potato's picture

Big punters usually dont bet on a whim. Let's face it the true odds are Cowboys $2.90 Storm $1.50 yet not a single bookie ever offered that.

Coach Potato's picture

One back on the field Bee Gee. Well done

Baggy_Gee's picture

Ahhhh the start of a new found love affair with the Eels, have yet to see the game past the score line but until 11:20 this evening I thought we were done. Came out of a movie with the wife, checked the score and started to dance in a deserted carpark. V.happy atm. Now to watch the replay.

a's picture

Eels beat Rabbitohs this just gave me even more hope that Cowboys are going to beat the Storm anyone who says Cowboys have no chance remember what happen in Eels Ranbitohs okay

Johnny Ray's picture

@ Baggy_Gee. Wait. You let your wife take you to movies when there was Eels game on ? Really ? Wow. That's so awesome of you mate ! I hope she let you Indooroopilly the Woolongong out of her when you found out the result ! ;-D

christine 's picture

bookies

Baggy_Gee's picture

She picked me up after work and we vanished. For some reason she doesn't seem as keen on football as I am. But with no children for the weekend (thank god for in-laws) I'm sure we can investigate how to Indooroopilly in every room.

a's picture

Many lost that's good hopefully Cowboys freaking win on Monday night

christine 's picture

oh johnny we're blessed we now have two of you , you & baggy gee .

Tailspin's picture

Well done johnny ray, good call on the dragons.

IP7's picture

Is anybody concerned Johnny and baggy gee might be smoking something!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Steel Panther's picture

Wow 1 from 5 to date for me!! Not pretty. The unpredictable NRL is back.

I learned some interesting stats while watching the games last night.

I'm sure that someone said that since Ivan Cleary took over at Penrith they've had 9 Monday night games and never won the following week.

Other stat was all 13 (?) games that Wade Graham has been named at number 6 for Cronulla they've never won. Fitting that he threw the intercept pass that handed the Titans the win.

These stats along with JRs about Manly not winning at Woolongong for 12 years makes interesting reading. Hmmm....

a's picture

Not pretty for me either but I should have tipped Dragons because I hate Manly

Shanghai's picture

Sunday morning and I am 1 from 5 too. Warriors just scored again to make it 16-16 .... go you good things. Johnny Ray ..... "Indooroopilly the Woolongong out of her " ...... priceless and I'm still chuckling!

a's picture

Broncos are just back in front 18-16 with 5 mins left

christine 's picture

a see this was a week when you could have got 3 back on wally but knowing which games is the hard part but that's what you have to do , it's basically just common sense if the odds say this team will win but your head say no they won't then don't tip them .

Steel Panther's picture

Normal transmission resumed at the Warriors with a dreadful display. I did think though they had a couple of calls go against them in the last 5. The penalty decision was pedantic from Chechin, a Brisbane knock on that the Warriors got no advantage from and the last try awarded to the Broncos was touched by Nikorima before McCullough touched down. No excuses for the Warriors though as got what they deserved.

a's picture

Yes I will have to I should have tipped the Dragons last night because I hate Manly so I hope next week is the week I jag one

Coach Potato's picture

Knowing that noone smashed it - only 3s, 4s, and 5s it means you should feel no different than if everyone got 5s, 6s, and 7s,right? Feel better?

Very nice stats Illawarra Panther. I have a doozie to share next week.

a's picture

Cowboys to win tomrrow

christine 's picture

a i mean take the same as wally each week & if any of them don't sound right to you or you know there wrong then take the opposite .

a's picture

Yes I will I will make sure I beat Wally

christine 's picture

last week I was 7/ 8 & if cowboys win tomorrow night i'm 4 / 8 this week that's shameful.

a's picture

I hope Cowboys will win

Coach Potato's picture

Are we all just thinking too hard? Feels like a lot of upsets week to week but a review of the starting prices shows if you'd taken the favourite every game, you'd be sitting on 19 going into tonight's game. There are a few slightly ahead of this mark, but with 19 you wouldn't be complaining would you?

The Thinker's picture

Johnny Ray,
Indooroopilly is an anglicized version of the old Aboriginal place name for the area - which roughly translated as 'a gully full of leeches'.

I think you might be on to something.

Johnny Ray's picture

Awesome. Thanks for that Thinker ! ;-D

Baggy_Gee's picture

Coach, I think we are over thinking but more against ourselves. I.e. christine's advice to a, very sound as Wally is beating 95% of us soundly, but to catch up you need to find the one roughie per week and that doesn't always come off.

Coach Potato's picture

You can follow someone else's tips apart from the odd game - but then if it doesn't come off, you are further behind. Let's say the switcheroo may come off 50% of the time (if you're lucky) where would that leave you except back at square one again? Doesn't make much sense to me

christine 's picture

Baggy gee thanks for the acknowledgement i'm not on the tipping ladder I just tell '' a '' when he should change strategy & finding the one roughie each week doesn't always come off but it's all part of having strategy such as knowing how the other people in the comp tip each week if they tip favourites or not for example , & anyone of you could have got 3 back on wally this week that he didn't get but as you said it's a matter of knowing which ones are wrong & which ones are right & that all comes with time of tippng against each other & knowing how the teams are going as in which teams are winning there games & which are not as I said strategy .

a's picture

Yes it is a hard thing to do each week so hopefully I can do it next week

christine 's picture

I won my in house comp two years in a row using strategy & I also helped a last year come second to wally in the comp & if a had of listened to me when I told him to change his tip to souths from bulldogs 3 times then he would have finished on the same score as wally & they both would have been equal winners but it wasn't meant to be for a last season & you have more chance of doing so when you get as far ahead of everyone else so that is the main aim right now to get a as far up the other end of the ladder as we can as soon as we can ok a .

Tailspin's picture

Go the QLD trifecta, and hopefully cowboys back on track

Coach Potato's picture

Why hasn't anything been said about Saturday April 25th where 5 consecutive games will be played? Schedule 12pm: New Zealand v Gold Coast 2pm: Newcastle v Nth Qld 4pm: Sydney v St George 6:15pm Melbourne v Manly 8pm Brisbane v Parramatta. Hard to complain but leaves Canterbury, Wests, Penrith, Cronulla, Souths, and Canberra playing second fiddle. C'mon NRL. I think you could have put the other 3 games on at the same time - just didn't want to overlap. I mean to say there's friggin only one Sydney game in the whole lot, and its the team that can't draw a crowd.

a's picture

When Cowboys were down by 7 with 3 mins to go I thought f it they lost again but than they scored a try to get back to 1 and than they got a penalty and than they kick a field goal to send it in to extra time and than Cowboys missed 2 field goals and storm missed won and than thruston kicked the field goal to win it for my team and I said yes

No my goal for than is in their next 2 games against Panthers and Rabbitohs is for them to win 1 of the 2 games if they do I will be happy

a's picture

Cowboys have a tough road ahead of them hopeful,y they can win 1 of the 2 games aha tots rabbitohs or panthers
