Round sixteen selections

Parramatta Eels vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Thursday night – Bankwest Stadium

The Eels kept the Storm scoreless last week, and while the Storm had a fair chunk of their first thirteen unavailable, the Storm are kept to 0 about once every decade...so it's worth noting. I'm not worried about the Eels defence, but their attack is a concern. In their last seven games, they have scored 18 points or less six times. Meanwhile the Bunnies have scored 32, 28, 31 and 56 in their last four outings. Now the Eels are a tougher opponent than the teams the Bunnies have been beating up of late, but the Rabbits look like a team peaking in the lead up to finals football. The Eels beat them pretty soundly earlier this year and are a red hot favourite, but I'll take them on in this.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 7

Result – Rabbitohs 38 defeated Eels 0

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Gold Coast Titans – Friday night – Netstrata Jubilee Stadium

While neither side will play finals football this season, they're both playing some attractive football at times, and on potential could have some successful years in front of them. The Dragons are clearly a better side with Hunt at hooker (even if he doesn't want to be there), and Dean Young is the kind of (interim) coach that will keep this team on the straight and narrow until the regular season wraps up. They're not certainties in this, particularly with Vaughan and Sims ruled out, but the Titans are missing Fotuaika and Peats...so that evens things up a little on the missing forwards front. I'm with the Dragons at home, and backing Dufty to score a try at some point looks sensible to me.

Verdict – Dragons by 4

Result – Titans 14 defeated Dragons 10

Sydney Roosters vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – Sydney Cricket Ground

Round four this year was probably the first indication that something was seriously wrong at the Brisbane Broncos. The cardboard cutouts would have been heading for the exits early (if they could) as the Roosters racked up a 59-0 victory at Suncorp. It could have been more. You would think that would be the low water mark for the Broncos this season, but they've sunk way lower than that. As I write we are waiting to hear from their departing coach. I expect he will be tight-lipped (no doubt part of his settlement agreement). Peter Gentle carries on the interim - do not go gentle into that good night. Milford and Luke are missing on Friday night, so once again they are shuffling the troops in those key playmaking roles. Croft returns on the bench. The Roosters, with a raft of injury issues, dominated the Tigers last week. An ominous sign, given the Tigers beat the Broncos 48-0 in round ten. Cordnor and Tupou are back for the tricolours, and they just win.

Verdict – Roosters by 22

Result – Roosters 58 defeated Broncos 12

New Zealand Warriors vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday afternoon – Scully Park

A real danger game for the Knights here, who have effectively sealed a finals berth already this season. Note the location, so this is the first time all season the Warriors get to play in front of the people of Tamworth. They have shown all season tremendous grit under duress and I assume they can lift for this. Blake Green, who left the Warriors for the Knights, is now injured. He'll be replaced by Mason Lino, another ex-Warrior. An upset result on the cards here, but the locals won't be upset about it. Potentially the game of the round.

Verdict – Warriors by 2

Result – Warriors 36 defeated Knights 6

Cronulla Sharks vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Netstrata Jubilee Stadium

As I see it, there are four teams in the NRL currently doing well enough to win the premiership, and another two that could (potentially) get to that level. The Sharks are likely to make the top eight this season, but they are clearly not one of those top four (or top six) teams. They should win this, particularly at home, but they'll have nowhere to hide when only eight sides remain. Some notable returns for both sides on Saturday night - with Johnson back for the Sharks and Holmes returning on the wing for the Cowboys. With Holmes on a $5.8 million deal with his club, he has to be the most expensive winger in the history of everything.

Verdict – Sharks by 14

Result – Sharks 28 defeated Cowboys 12

Penrith Panthers vs Wests Tigers – Saturday night – Panthers Stadium

For Tigers fans, I fear their hopes for this season are dashed on Saturday night. They are currently four points adrift of 8th spot, and four of their last five games are against genuine finals contenders. If anything, they're in more danger of falling below the teams (Dragons, Warriors) behind them. Harry Grant is an important return for them, and the Panthers have lost two key players in Kikau and Koroisau, but the Panthers will find a way with the crew they have. It's a good crew, and the minor premiership beckons.

Verdict – Panthers by 8

Result – Panthers 30 defeated Tigers 6

Melbourne Storm vs Manly Sea Eagles – Sunday afternoon – Sunshine Coast Stadium

The Storm, barely recognisable last weekend with a team missing almost all of their best and brightest, still only conceded 14 points to a team well entrenched in the top four. That said, they failed to score a solitary point, but bringing back Cameron Smith, Munster and Hughes should help considerably (and allows Papenhuyzen to focus on one playmaking role rather than trying to manage four playmaking roles simultaneously). They also get Jesse Bromwich back, but lose brother Kenny to a calf issue and Brandon Smith (not a brother) to his second broken face for the year. Despite that he still got up, politely asked the trainer not to touch the sinkhole where his face used to be, and politely asked the referee if his team deserved a penalty. Clearly his pain receptors are built differently to the rest of us. Manly, it seems, may have given up on this season if their last effort is any indication. Thompson returns (as a reptile) following a tongue injury, and may have similar pain receptors to Brandon Smith. The Storm have a fairly cosy run into the finals from here and will be looking to secure a top two finish at least.

Verdict – Storm by 16

Result – Storm 30 defeated Sea Eagles 6

Canberra Raiders vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Sunday afternoon – GIO Stadium

Corey Harawira-Naera is out of the Raiders side on Sunday which is a good idea because...well...awkward. Papalii (aka the fastest man in league), along with Lui and Young return to the starting pack. Dylan Napa (aka the man who wants to be the fastest man in league) returns from suspension, while the Bulldogs make a number of positional changes. I think it would be a little unfair if the Bulldogs end up with the wooden spoon this season, but to avoid it they need to win at least one more game. It won't be this one.

Verdict – Raiders by 34

Result – Raiders 34 defeated Bulldogs 20

Guru Craig's picture

Good morning tipsters, on this fine Monday morning. The Guru would like to congratulate the Bavarian lads on their little Soccer win, and while we are in that part of the world, it would seem the Guru was 'Spot to the On' about Herr Seibull. The Former Bronco's employee has coached his last NRL game. Ever. Yippee, Lets go Bronco's. Top 8 20201. #Kevin21.

Tweeter gate is as the G thought, just a lot of nonsense. For the budding Magical students out there, The Guru hears that there will be a Super Garage sale soon in Brisbane, The S-Bull is leaving town...Large collection of Smoke and Mirrors, well used, open to offers, How to coach for Dummies book, not opened still in pristine condition and other un-priceless gems.

The Guru wonders if he has had too many 29th birthdays and perhaps has a mild case of the Grumpy older Guru syndromes..But Rd 15 of the NRL...Hmmmm. The men in charge are definitely earning those bonuses with the whistle and staying a large part of our game. Raiders proved to be far too good even with the odd looking bloke who err seemed to be transitioning into Stevie wonder for the second week in a row. Captains challenges could be a new betting prospective...

Some excitement in Townsville this Wednesday tipsters..the Cows and boys are quite...But we have a couple of blokes who will punch on for a few rounds under the shadow of Castle Hill. The Guru had some years in the 'Ville' and a few more over on the isle of Magnetic as a younger lad.

Tim 'Needs a nickname' Tszyu is having a crack at the Brisbane Butcher Jeff Horn. The Hornet is an outsider here and probably for fair reason. Tszyu at 25 is undefeated in 15 bouts and is offering the enthusiast $1.50 H2H in what should be an interesting spectacle. Horn @ $2.50, a bit of a brawler, who doesn't go too well in round 9s and is sure to have a bit of the old claret flowing freely does have the experience. The Hornet has a few quality fights to his record including the Suncorp Superfix. While Kostya Jnr lacks the experience of the older Qlder, he makes up for this with speed, accuracy and a fair amount of Russian stopping power, and we have a timely reminder recently about Russian stopping power, Just ask the bloke who thought he could be the new Russian president! Dilma? i think not.

The Guru is backing the Zoo train. With just the right amount of Bavarian winnings to buy a nice coffee of two, never did like tea.

Remember enthusiasts, always tip responsibly, beware the Captains challenge and Don't drink tea with Russians. Happy Monday.

Tiger my tips will still be rhe same as yours i just can't top bulldogs they have thr worst fan.base of any team lyal but the worst i, i am not on the ladder so it doesn't matter i will.take the same as you & ljke bulldogs if i disagree i will have one different but o will let you know ...

JKBubble's picture

Yep i hear you christine ....NEVER should of tipped dogs! Cost me the elusive 8 and a healthy payday!
up at halftime against an undermaned warriors...and they packed up shop.
Damn you dogs!

Baggy_Gee's picture

20201 is a fair time between drinks for a top 8 berth Guru. That would be the biggest drought since the Sharks one, or 18180 years by my count. Sort of eclipses 40 years for a premiership.

mark ashford's picture

Hey Guru
There's a $mill on the table for Siebold which he is yet to accept but surely he has no choice except to grab it and go. He is in an untenable position and should leave with whatever dignity he can muster.
Kevvie has said he is yet to get an approach from the Broncs but wouldn't commit either way.

Christine's picture

I believe the $1 mil on the table offer to seiboild was to walk away at the end of this season so broncos can go after kevie but ask me it should be affective immediately this is so damaging for the club ,juat my opinion ...

tigerholic's picture

All good Christine, let's hope we can jag that illusive perfect round. Have a good week

Tiger

mark ashford's picture

Hi Chris
I believe the offer to Siebold is for him to walk away now not the end of the season. His management team are currently in talks with the Broncs to get to a final figure and a decision is expected within 48 hours.

mark ashford's picture

Thinker & the Guru
Why don't the Broncos just sack Siebold, sure give him some money and walk away from him. I know he has a contract for another 3 years but player contracts don't seem to mean much these days so why would a coaches. If you don't perform in any other job you are sacked with little or no payout. Siebold has not performed so lets go to court and see who wins. He is destroying his creditability and also his chances of another coaching job. Who would pick him up?

Guru Craig's picture

The situation with Seibull and Brisbane does seem to be a shambles. From what the Guru understands its about the payout. $1 mil is few houses short of $3.2 mil.

Christine's picture

Mark you can't expect players to see out there contracts if the coaches don't , in this case broncos have no choice but to get rid of seibold & having talks about it would only to be to settle on a figure remember this season wasn't going to be as long it was suposed to be only 20 roundsbut i am not sure what they end decision was this whole season has been a mess because of this rotten virus so seibold would only be trying to secure himself as much money as he can mean while brroncos are suffering because of it ...

joe PNG's picture

1mill is too much, what has he done for my beloved BRONCOS

mark ashford's picture

JoePNG
The answer to your question is NOTHING absolutely nothing. Seems like
he is no different than anybody else in the NRL just in it for the money.

The Thinker's picture

If you can take your minds back to when the Broncos started looking for a new coach. At the time, the Board were cranky with Wayne Bennett...and perhaps they were entitled to - remember when Wayne brought Andrew Gee up into the coaches box?

Anyhoo, the Broncos had a Wayne problem and needed to find a solution...and they got a bit desperate. It's a little like when a club knows they desperately need a halfback, and they go to market to see who is available, and they inevitably pay overs for their services.

Siebold looked like a ready made solution to their Wayne problem...and they paid overs with what has to be the most generous package for a rookie coach in the history of Australian sport.

The Broncos found a solution to their Wayne problem, but gave themselves a Siebold problem. I'm sure if they could go back and do it all again, the transition plan that Bennett offered to the club would be snapped up.

JKBubble's picture

31.25% (5 out of 16) teams removed their coach this year...thinker is this a new record??

Also do you think there could be 1 more coach to get the chop this year...if so which club would you guess?

mark ashford's picture

The Thinker
Yes the Broncs may have been caught between a rock and a hard place but surely someone at Red Hill could have said "lets give him two years with a club option of two more" Easy in hindsight but it is what it is.
Anyway Mr Siebold is gone with whatever payout he agreed to.
Only remains now to see who gets the job. From what I've heard it's between Walters and Greenie.

The Thinker's picture

@JKBubble

We are running out of coaches to sack. The only other one in any kind of peril might be Morris at the Sharks...but I'd say he's safe for now.

mark ashford's picture

Hi Mary S
Just read your attachment and it seems there were more problems at the Broncos than just Siebold. I would be extremely disappointed if Darius Boyd led some sort of revolt (or go slow) against Siebold due to his long time association with Bennet. Whats happened to Siebold may just get a genuine smile from Wayne.

a's picture

Yeah I’m glad siebord is gone from the broncos

Greetings Y’all,

Too late for game previews tonight but in the meantime…

If nothing else, that try Kotoni Staggs scored last week against the Dragons made watching that game so worthwhile. I’m trying to remember a try this year that got me so excited but I’m having a hard time coming up with one. Staggs produces a huge fend on Aitken, shakes off Clune, goes for a dash and sells a beautiful dummy to Dufty and scores a 70-odd metre try! Man I love this game. Why would you watch AFL if you can see tries like that?

Except for players named on team lists for this week’s games, a quick look at the NRL “casualty ward” for the top 8 shows the number of players missing from each club:

Panthers - 5
Storm - 7
Eels - 2
Roosters - 8
Raiders - 9
Knights - 9
Rabbitohs - 7
Sharks - 4

Anyone tipping a Panthers vs. Eels Grand Final? If you were supporters of either the Panthers or the Eels you’d be hoping you remain injury-free until then, otherwise things could get tricky. Just sayin’…

Looking at the NRL Team Lists I see the Mighty Chooks are getting Boyd Cordner and Daniel Tupou back. Woo-Hoo!

@ Markus
Carrying forward from your “ripping great yarn” video you posted last week, here’s another one if you’re interested bro’…

Guru Craig's picture

Goooooood Morning NRL tipsters and enthusiasts.

In the words of 'Ice Cube', today is a good day!

Breaking news in Brisbane, The Guru has it on good advice that the Bronco's have been tested and the results are in...They have all tested Seibull19 free. Congrats boys. Bronco's 2.0, The Walters Winners, bring on 2021. (Guru had a bit of an embarrassing typo with his last post haha.)

Para vs Souths

Souths - WB is back! The Great man knows about timing. Bennett's Bunnies devoured the hapless Eagles last round. In what should have been a close fight The Bunnies put the foot down and Manly gave up.
Guru is with The Thinker here. Souths are playing well, WB has timed the run for the finals. Para exploited the rules to get a win over The Covid Stormer's. The Guru was quite disappointing in that game...NRL refs you got played. Para had to resort to those tactics, the coaching group knew on a fair game they couldn't win. Para are not capable of wining the premiership this year. Bold Statement? No! The Eels are a good side but they have limitations. Souths to continue the improved form and give Wayne two victories this week. Beware the Ref.

STG vs GCT

Dragons - Should be too good for the Titans even though they are fading away. STG peaked in the Mary's gone round, everything from there will be less. Coach Flannagan and his assistant Mr Young should be able to overcome an enthusiastic Gold Coast who have impressed The Guru in effort and hard work. There is a slight chance of an upset, but who steps up for the Coast? STG 1-12, beware the fade.

Roosters v Bronco's

Chooks - Beware the Bronco's. Brisbane will have a right crack at times in this game but the Morris boys led side with the assistance of their special Bondi salary cap will be far too good for The Seibull19 free Bronc's. Brisbane have improved in effort but the Qld side just don't have the direction or understanding to win against the big boys. The Gentle Bronco's are a much better side but its just too much to ask, Herr Siebull literally has left this club in a disaster. No structure or play...Its just pure effort and desire which is not enough to beat a quality side like the 13 million Dollar Roosters.

Warriors v Newcastle

Warriors - The Guru is willing and able, to take a leap here. Australia Jnr have played very well since their immigration to the motherland. The Brown Gus factor when applied with the Jnr footy feel of going away as a group and playing for each other has shown to be a significant factor in the Kiwi's desire to play and win. Newcastle seem to be limping over the line, just getting the wins to stay in the 8 however they have been very disappointing and fail to live up the the expectations of a quality and consistent top 8 side. Roger the million dollar Shrek will want to compete against Kayln The lion King Ponga. NZ should have the desire and effort needed to win. Cautiously enthusiastic about this one.

Sharks v Cowboys

Sharks - Cronulla are a quality side in 2020, they have their limitations but winning this game won't be one of them. NQ have played overs in the last few games and shown some spirit, but The Guru feels this week that same spirit will be a bit lacking. Cronulla wont win the comp in 2020 but will be too good for NQ this week.

Panthers v Tigers

Panthers - Big disappointment last week the West house cats, very little effort and desire, they had nothing when the questions were asked. The Tigers side have some capable players and the Marshall/brooks show can be worth a few nice plays, but overall the Wests side are just not good enough. Mad Maguire vs Crazy Ivan...Penrith might want to up the dressing room insurance for the visitors. Training run for the Minor Premiers.

Melbourne v Manly

Melbourne - The 2020 grand final winners welcome back the most wanted man in the NRL. Cameron 'The capn coach' Smith is back after a little rest and with him a few other very good players. Manly...where to begin or end here...are done this year. The Guru expects The Covid Storm to ravage the hapless Eagles. Not much doing here.

Raiders v Bulldogs

Canberra - Josh 'The Bolt' Papali, how good is this bloke huh? Ricky's Raiders are a genuine team with belief, not good enough to win this year but far too good for the Wooden Doggies. The Dog's welcome back plenty of talent for this round and the team are putting in fair amount of effort but this would seem to be a lock-in win for the Green machine.

Christine's picture

My father just told me channel 7is reporting seibold was given $1.6 mil ...

The Butcher's picture

I love reading the previews on this site such time consuming work for our reading pleasure.
DFB is simple easy reading with a touch of humour great stuff.
Newbie great reading there’s a reason he’s in WA because with the 2 hour time difference he starts writing it at 9am in Sydney by the time he finishes its 9am in Perth but by the time I be read it, it’s 9am in Cape Town.
And now we have Guru Craig (Bellamy)
I’m enjoying your bias Storm comments and how sure you are only for it to backfire against Parra. You probably get out a packet of minties and masticate in front of the poster of Cameron Smith in his speedos.
But you seem like good bloke and even your Broncos supporters think things will be better by flicking Seibold when the problem is the players on the field no leader in the forwards and inconsistent halves and undisciplined youngsters you might need to borrow our special Bondi salary cap to get out of this one.
But keep it up I’m sure Cameron will make sure of that.

mark ashford's picture

Hey Rocket
The Butcher has taken on the Guru and vice versa, lets sit back and see what happens.

Tiger this week don't tip bulldogs ...non

I did not put non i don't know where that came from tiger ...

Dragons-fanboy's picture

Hey everyone, my tips for this week are:

Eels by 8 – This will be a good game. Two top 8 sides coming up against each other with plenty to play for. Parra would love a top 2 finish to play a home semi whereas the Rabbitohs want to remain in the 8 and they would love a top 4 finish which is highly unlikely but hey, rugby league is a funny game, you never know. I think the trend will continue here. The Rabbitohs to continue losing to the top 8 sides whilst beating the bottom 8 sides. Now I know they demolished Manly and that in itself is no easy feat but still against the top tier opponents in which the Eels are one of those teams, the Rabbits tend to lose against them teams and with the Eels being a top tier team, I see another Rabbitohs loss against a top team. I do think they are a good chance and the Eels need to seriously lift here; I do think they lifted last week but they need to show more in attack. The Rabbitohs on the other hand, are fine in attack, they just need to work on their defence in my eyes. Will be a great game with plenty of talent on show here, but Johnston is a huge out for the Rabbitohs Parra do have Niukore out, but they should be alright. Eels to win another at Bankwest.

Dragons by 10 – We should win here. We are coming off that tight win over the Broncos. But by god didn’t the boys give me a big scare. The Broncos came to play last Friday night, but the boys were just too good in the end and thoroughly deserved the win. Not to mention, the refs/bunker were in favour of the Broncos I thought in terms of the amount of bad calls we had go against us compared to the Broncos. But really, the ill-discipline costed the Broncos as the same number of tries were scored by both sides Lomax even missed a conversion, but it was the penalty goals which proved the difference in the end. I think we will continue our string of wins and possibly give this top 8 a shake by beating the Titans. Now the Titans will not be an easy beat though, we still have to be on our game, and I think Dean Young’s simple plan he is going with will work out and we will get those wins. Now I do not know about in the last few rounds, but we should beat the Titans here even though they have been competitive in games and have shown this season that they have improved immensely from last season. In terms of the outs, the Dragons are missing K. Sims and Vaughan with Ford and Brittain coming in for them and the Titans will be missing Peats and Fotuaika with Rein in Clark coming in on the bench with Peachey playing at lock. C’mon Dragons! Continue to keep the ball rolling and continue to unsettle the top 8! Up the Saints!

Roosters by 30 – Roosters should smash the Broncos here. They’ve done it before this season, and they can do it again. They will be welcoming back captain Cordner and Tupou which only strengthens their side even more. Keary is still out and still no sign of SBW yet. I still think this will be a cakewalk for the Roosters. Good sign for the Broncos though that they competed against the Saints and if they can bring that into this game, then maybe they would not get embarrassed like they did last time they faced the Chooks. But playing at the SCG with players coming back, playing to stay in the 4, you would expect the Roosters to stand up and put on a score on the Broncos. Broncos are $11 in betting for this game, who would have thought the Broncos would be $11 outsiders in a footy game well 2020 is the answer! In terms of the outs for the Broncos, Milford and Luke are both out with Croft returning on the bench and O’Sullivan given a go in the 6 jumpers. Also want to mention, how about that Kotoni Staggs try from last week, an absolute ripper!

Warriors by 2 – My upset of the round sees the Warriors getting the win over the Knights. The Knights are underwhelming at the moment. I can definitely see them being the first team knocked out in the finals. The Warriors on the other hand, have been actually playing some good footy and have showed plenty of heart as well. With all that has happened to them, it is really impressive to see the Warriors still show up week in, week out. Unbelievable to say the least. I haven’t really been tipping them, but they thoroughly deserved to be tipped, they are the surprise that keeps on giving. It is crazy to think they are 2 wins off 8th place. :O. They will be hosting this game at Tamworth and I think the crowd there will be in for a treat. This will be a tight game but it is the Warriors who get the upset. They do welcome back CHT which is a bonus whereas the Knights will be missing new recruit Blake Green but we all know what has happened to him now, the Dogs have signed him and he has been replaced by Lino this week, interesting to see how he fairs this week and he may be the first choice kicker too. RTS is obviously the key for the Warriors and him vs Ponga looks a mouth-watering Fullback battle.

Sharks by 12 – Sharks should win here. The Cowboys are shocking at the moment and how can they win a game at the moment? They have now lost 8 straight! They nearly beat the Bunnies last week then they couldn’t even score a single point against an understrength Knights outfit but then again, the Cowboys have their fair share of injury problems themselves, missing Taumololo is a big one but a key in for the Cowboys is Val Holmes on the wing. And we all know that before he left for NFL, he was one of the best wingers in the game! It will be really interesting to see how he goes, against his former club too. Last time these two met, Sharks got a comfortable win over the Cowboys back when the Cowboys were in good form and the Sharks were in bad form, now times have changed but the result won’t change, Sharks to win it comfortably here, they will buoyed with the return of Johnson. Interesting to see that Tracey is at five-eighth for this one, how he will go we’ll find out.

Panthers by 6 – Panthers to go to 11 in a row here. 11 in a row! How good would that sound for the Panthers. Cowboys went 11 in a row in 2015, they won the premiership and the Sharks went 15 in a row in 2016, they won the premiership, is this a sign for things to come for the Panthers? 10 in a row at the moment chasing an 11th straight. Unbelievable stuff from the Panthers. I think they will do it here even without two of their best players in Koraisau and Kikau. Cleary to continue his merry ways here. Tigers have been really disappointing and when they should be desperate and playing well since they are playing for a finals position, they aren’t, and it is just really disappointing for the Tigers it really is. Yet another season where they will not make the 8 and they even have the chance to lose their 9th position to drop to as low as 12th by the end of the round if Manly, Dragons and Warriors win. I think this will be a close game considering the outs for Penrith but surely the Tigers lose yet another here in the battle of the cats. And, the battle of the west. Also, home ground advantage for the Panthers. Those Panthers fans who are allowed will be in full force on Saturday night.

Storm by 18 – Storm should win comfortably here. Well I mean they should, but will they? They are coming off a pretty disappointing loss last week. Being held to nil. But… they were under strengthened. Under strengthened big time. This week they welcome back Jesse Bromwich, Cam Smith, Munster, and J Hughes but will be missing Brandon Smith and Kenny Bromwich. Manly on the other hand, will be missing Suli but welcome back Joel Thompson and Marty Taupau. Manly may even win the forwards battle here, their forward pack is at full strength and do have the edge over the Storm’s in my eyes but the Storm have the massive advantage in the backline and should win that battle fairly comfortably. Manly will be having Funa in the 1 and Gosiewski in the centres. Storm should have too many points for Manly and given Manly conceded 56 last week, it looks like they are not up to it and the Storm should bounce back as they do so well in convincing fashion. Bellamy would psyche his boys up for a big one. But still, you never know when it comes to facing Manly, Manly have upset the Storm a few times in recent seasons or have come close in games.

And finally… Raiders by 20 – Raiders should win here. They are really flying under the radar at the moment. Playing at home as well, they should be too strong for the Bulldogs here. You can never doubt the Bulldogs effort, but they just cannot win football games, simple as that. They had another great opportunity last week against the Warriors and were leading 14-6 at one stage only to go down by 6. I still think the Bulldogs won’t finish last but surely, they don’t beat the Raiders here. The Raiders to smash the Dogs here to continue putting the pressure on the Roosters for the top 4. The Green machine to run riot over the Dogs. But honestly, I do see the Bulldogs in this for a little bit but then they will tire, and the Raiders will take full advantage of that. Interesting to note that the Bulldogs have made a whole host of changes including positional changes. I do not think it’ll work out for them unfortunately for the Bulldogs. Viking clap for what it is worth will be in full force even with only a few thousand in the stands it’s still great to see.

Awesome! Good luck with everyone’s teams for this week and with everyone’s tips for this week. Before I go, I must commend Tigerholic for his incredible story that he shared with us last week. You are very brave mate and I applaud you for spreading some awareness too considering this is a very open site after all. Continue to soldier on and I wish you all the very best moving forward with your job once you get back into it. And also thank you very much to Butcher on your comment about my review above. Much appreciated mate! I am glad to see you enjoy the read and enjoy the touch of humour I put into it too when I do. Cheers and enjoy the rest of your week everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sa-wat-dee krup,

What’s the difference between a bird and a fly?
A bird can fly but a fly can’t bird.

(Sighs and groans of disbelief I know 🤪) Get ready Cape Town, let’s do this thang 😁

Eels vs. Rabbitohs 55-45 @ Bankwest Stadium
Ladder Position = Eels
Bookies Favourite = Eels

Eels
I’ll be first to admit, I underestimated the Eels big-time last week. They were just so switched on and clinical in the first half and had basically put the Storm away when they led 12-0 at half-time. Only 2 tries scored for the match and the Eels got both of them. Their only points in the second half came from a penalty while Asofa-Solomona was in the sin bin. Disappointingly they were unable to capitalise on the one-man advantage they had in that 10 minutes. Their defence was impressive, especially when the Storm put pressure on them. The Eels are finally starting to look like they’re developing some “grit” in their games. Some stats worth a mention:

Possession (50-50)
Line Breaks (5-1)
Kick Defusal (100%-58%)
Missed Tackles (29-18)
Errors (14-11)
Penalties Conceded (1-8)

Rabbitohs
What can I say about the Rabbitohs’ effort last week against Manly except that they were simply outstanding. It was the biggest half-time lead (38-0) in their club's 112-year history. Even though Manly scored the first 2 tries of the second half, the Bunnies put on 3 tries in an 8 minute stanza and in the end ran out the easiest of winners 56-16. Another superb kicking game from Reynolds. He kicked 9 from 9 conversions and a penalty as well. Thought Graham had an alright game too. He ran for 163 metres, had 2 try assists and 2 linebreaks. Some stats worth a mention:

Possession (64-36)
Completion Rate (92%-68%)
Post Contact Metres (835-523)
Line Breaks (8-1)
Missed Tackles (23-39)
Ineffective Tackles (22-13)
Errors (5-13)

Verdict: While the Rabbitohs’ win was emphatic last week, I just think the Eels’ win had more merit. This could go either way but I’m on Baggy’s BOYS (Eels) this week.

Dragons vs. Titans 65-35 @ Jubilee
Ladder Position = Dragons
Bookies Favourite = Dragons

Dragons
The Dragons surprised me by how well they started last week against the Broncos. Bang! Bang! and they were 12-0 ahead. Then the momentum shifted due to the Broncos’ effort but the Dragons got back in front and went into the sheds leading 18-12. The Dragons got a bit of a scare and were made to work for the win. At the business end, the Dragons were able to settle somewhat and produce a number of repeat sets that kept the pressure on the Broncos, enabling the Dragons to earn (on balance) a well deserved 28-24 win. It was a close one but they snuck in. Some stats worth a mention:

Possession (52-48)
Kicking Metres (818-609)
Missed Tackles (27-16)

Titans
Even without Kevin Proctor, the Titans made a good start last week against the Raiders. They actually scored first but then the Raiders put on 22 unanswered points and the Titans found themselves behind 22-4 at the break. The second half started almost the same as the first with the Titans again scoring first but they were too far behind and the Raiders put ‘em away 36-16. The Titans were brave but were no match for the classy Raiders. Losing Ash Taylor before kick-off just made things all that much harder for them unfortunately. Their defence was found to be somewhat lacking you’d have to say. Some stats worth a mention:

Possession (45-55)
All Run Metres (1,485-1,987)
Post Contact Metres (570-772)
Offloads (9-18)
Tackles Made (408-277)
Missed Tackles (51-22)
Ineffective Tackles (34-9)

Verdict: Dunno, I reckon the Titans are a chance here. The Dragons just snuck in against the Broncos and I’m not quite sure what to read into that. I could regret this but I’m tipping the Titans.

Roosters vs. Broncos 75-25 @ SCG
Ladder Position = Roosters
Bookies Favourite = Roosters

Roosters
It was a welcome return to some sort of form (for me at least) when the Roosters dominated the first half last week and led the Tigers 20-0 at the break. The Tigers came back at them in the second half but the Roosters defended the line well, saw off the challenge and then ran away with it, winning somewhat comfortably 38-16. Tedesco stood up and had a very good game with 207 metres run, two line breaks, one line break assist and 6 tackle breaks. Brett and Josh Morris scored 2 tries each which was the first time they’ve both scored a double playing in the same side. Brett ran for 226 metres and Josh for 155. Not bad. Not bad at all 😉. Highlights for me were the hit on Tedesco by Garner and Flanagan’s pass to Morris. Both were a joy to witness 😍. Downside for the Roosters was the injury to Ikuvalu but hopefully they’ll have some soldiers returning soon. The Roosters were surprisingly “average” in the stats department. Some worth a mention:

Possession (47-53)
Line Breaks (10-5)
Offloads (6-15)
Missed Tackles (38-32)
Ineffective Tackles (23-10)
Ruck Infringements (6-1)

Broncos
The Broncos showed plenty of courage to get back into the game against the Dragons last week after a horror start. From memory I think they didn’t see the ball in their hands until 7 minutes into the match. Impressive games from Dearden, Staggs and Carrigan got them oh so close. Finally some spirit shown in the second half but they were unable to get the job done. I’m putting that down to them being in an unfamiliar situation and not quite sure how to finish it off. Look, the Broncos were definitely better last week but still need to work at the self-belief a little more. Trust me, once the combinations start to click, they’ll be alright. The Broncos took it to the Dragons and yeah, they lost a close one but at least they’re getting closer. A lot to like from their effort last week. Some stats worth a mention:

Possession (48-52)
Kicking Metres (609-818)
Missed Tackles (16-27)

Verdict: Roosters. Begurk! 🐔 Begurk! 🐔

Warriors vs. Knights 40-60 @ Scully Park
Ladder Position = Knights
Bookies Favourite = Knights

Warriors
The Warriors were 10-0 down after just 18 minutes last week against the Bulldogs but worked their way back into the match and were only behind 10-6 at the break. Three minutes into the second half they were behind 14-6 but 3 tries in an impressive second half got them home 20-14 in the end. They put a lot of defensive pressure on the Bulldogs and they did enough to get the win. Great games from Tuivasa-Sheck, Nikorima and Murchie. Some stats worth a mention:

Possession (54-46)
Bombs (7-2)
Grubbers (5-2)
Missed Tackles (17-28)

Knights
Not a great game from either the Knights or the Cowboys last week to be honest. I’m pretty sure the windy conditions may have had something to do with that 😉. The Knights scored 6 points in the first half and 6 in the second and ran out uninspiring (?) 12-0 winners. There were a few highlights though. One of them involved that break Ponga made. It was great stuff but why didn’t he offload to Pearce? Aaargh! I suppose you could say he made up for that with his beautiful pass to Tuala who scored right at the end (78th minute) to absolutely seal it. Downside was the loss of Green (ACL) and Starford To'a (concussion) just before half-time. I really thought they might’ve taken advantage when Dunn was sin-binned but somehow they couldn’t. Some stats worth a mention:

Possession (56-44)
All Run Metres (2,036-1,363)
Post Contact Metres (899-617)
Forced Drop Outs (4-1)
Kick Defusal (100%-64%)
Missed Tackles (15-23)
Penalties Conceded (5-9)

Verdict: This is a tough one for me. The Warriors won’t make it easy for them but I’m thinking the Knights will just scrape in.

Sharks vs. Cowboys 60-40 @ Jubilee
Ladder Position = Sharks
Bookies Favourite = Sharks

Sharks
The Sharks got “ambushed” in the first half last week against the Panthers and were behind 22-6 at the break. They leaked another 3 in the second half and went down 38-12. How can I put this? The Panthers were simply too good for a patchy Sharks outfit. Not much luck for the Sharks, either before or during the game. They lost Shaun Johnson to a groin injury before kick-off but were no match for a rampaging Panthers anyway. The Sharks, just like so many before them, were held scoreless in the opening 20 minutes. The Sharks (sorta) tried to make a contest out of it but a single try in each half was never going to be enough. Some stats worth a mention:

Possession (47-53)
Missed Tackles (43-37)
Ineffective Tackles (11-31)
Errors (13-9)

Cowboys
The Cowboys didn’t have that great a game last week against the Knights. They were held scoreless for the first time in 8 years and they lost Jason Taumalolo to a calf injury. Their first half was pretty uneventful except in the final minutes where they had a lot of possession and forced quite a few repeat sets. It was due to that pressure that Mitchell Pearce got sin-binned but the Cowboys couldn’t take advantage of having an extra player for the first 10 minutes of the second half. I’m still confused why Kyle Feldt didn’t take a penalty shot at goal for the Pearce infringement. Even though they didn’t score any points, their defence held up pretty well against the Knights and they didn’t really lose by that much. They could’ve done better. Some stats worth a mention:

Possession (44-56)
All Run Metres (1,363-2,036)
Post Contact Metres (617-899)
Forced Drop Outs (1-4)
Kick Defusal (64%-100%)
Missed Tackles (23-15)
Penalties Conceded (9-5)

Verdict: Sharks for me.

Panthers vs. Tigers 70-30 @ Panthers Stadium
Ladder Position = Panthers
Bookies Favourite = Panthers

Panthers
The Panthers scored 4 tries in the first half last week against the Sharks and led 22-6 at the break. Another 3 in the second half saw them run out very comfortable 38-12 winners. It was a clinical performance to say the least. They were on fire yet again and were simply too good for the Sharks. A lot of commentators are mentioning (and rightly so) how the Panthers are continuing to hold their opposition scoreless in the opening 20 minutes of games. That, my friends, is something the other sides should be concerned about. That sort of defence will win Grand Finals 🤔. However, it would be remiss of me not to remind people that the only time this year that the Panthers have conceded points in the opening 20 was in their Round 1 clash against the “Mighty Sydney Roosters” 😁. Mind you, we did lose that game 😥. Some stats worth a mention:

Possession (53-47)
Missed Tackles (37-43)
Ineffective Tackles (31-11)
Errors (9-13)

Tigers
The Tigers got smashed in the first half last week against the Roosters and found themselves 20-0 down at the break. They fought back in the second half though and got within 8 points but they let themselves down with enough errors that allowed the Roosters to get back on top and blow the final result out to 38-12. While their effort just after half-time was admirable, they weren’t able to maintain the intensity long enough to make a game out of it. One thing I liked was the hit on Tedesco by Luke Garner. Yeah, strange I’d like the opposition hitting one of my favourite Chooks but from a football point of view it was a ripper. Even though the score didn’t reflect it, the Tigers did pretty well stats-wise. Some worth a mention:

Possession (53-47)
Line Breaks (5-10)
Offloads (15-6)
Missed Tackles (32-38)
Ineffective Tackles (10-23)
Ruck Infringements (1-6)

Verdict: Panthers obviously.

Storm vs. Manly 65-35 @ Sunshine Coast
Ladder Position = Storm
Bookies Favourite = Storm

Storm
Just like the Eels, I seriously underestimated the Storm last week. That is, I thought the Storm would’ve been better but they weren’t. Obviously those few extra players missing had more of an impact than I thought it would have. The Eels all but wrapped up the game last week in the first half when they led the Storm 12-0. It was a better effort in the second half from the Storm but with the players they were missing, their usual flair and cohesion was simply non-existent. Nicho Hynes did add some sparkle to the Storms’ play but they never really looked like winning that. The Storm were held scoreless (for the first time since round 12, 2014) in their 14-0 loss last week and will be “desperate” to get some bodies back. Some stats worth a mention:

Possession (50-50)
Line Breaks (1-5)
Kick Defusal (58%-100%)
Missed Tackles (18-29)
Errors (11-14)
Penalties Conceded (8-1)

Manly
I don’t wanna upset anyone here but it must be said that Manly were absolutely shocking last week against the Rabbitohs. Mind you, they have had a horror run of injuries this year and the majority of their performances so far have been commendable. Obviously their injury list has reached a point where they are finding it just a little tough to put in consistent efforts week in, week out. They were put under the pump last week from the very get-go and then they lose Tevita Funa and give away an 8 point try. When the luck’s against you, it’s against you 😥. In the end it was a disappointing 56-16 loss, one they no doubt need to put behind them. I’m not sure I can say anything positive about their game other than they did come out in the second half and score the first 2 tries as well as having less ineffective tackles. I think Daly Cherry-Evans summed it up best when he said “his side wasn't expecting the onslaught that came their way”. Some stats worth a mention:

Possession (36-64)
Completion Rate (68%-92%)
Post Contact Metres (523-835)
Line Breaks (1-8)
Missed Tackles (39-23)
Ineffective Tackles (13-22)
Errors (13-5)

Verdict: Storm in this one.

Raiders vs. Bulldogs 75-25 @ GIO
Ladder Position = Raiders
Bookies Favourite = Raiders

Raiders
The Titans scored first last week against the Raiders but then the Green Machine piled on 22 unanswered points and went into half-time leading 22-4. They maintained the effort in the second half and were just too classy for the understrength Titans and eventually strolled in 36-16 winners. Still can’t believe how Papalii made that ankle tap on Fogarty 💪. Now that’s a footballer. Boom! 💥 Great effort from Jack “six-again” Wighton I must say. Same goes for Sutton. All in all, a pretty convincing win last week. Some stats worth a mention:

Possession (55-45)
All Run Metres (1,987-1,485)
Post Contact Metres (772-570)
Offloads (18-9)
Tackles Made (277-408)
Missed Tackles (22-51)
Ineffective Tackles (9-34)

Bulldogs
The Bulldogs had the better of the Warriors last week in the first 20 minutes or so but lost their momentum and allowed the Warriors back into the game. At halftime, the Bulldogs led 10-6 and extended their lead 3 minutes into the second half. Unfortunately for them the Warriors scored 3 unanswered tries and it was basically all over and the Bulldogs went down 20-14. They weren’t able to handle the defensive pressure from the Warriors and another chance went begging. By all accounts, Jeremy Marshall-King, Will Hopoate and Kieran Foran had impressive games. Some stats worth a mention:

Possession (46-54)
Bombs (2-7)
Grubbers (2-5)
Missed Tackles (28-17)

Verdict: Raiders for me.

Let’s finish off with another “Song of the Week”…

Regardless of age and the risk of being labelled sexist, I think there might be a message here for those guys out there who could (and should) do better…

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Until next week people. Cheers.

Hey Christine
We will definitely give the Bulldogs a wide berth.

Morning Thinker

I was just reading your write up in the lead up to this week's matches and I have to ask, are you just being nice by only tipping the Panthers to beat my Tigers by 8 or are you thinking the Tigers may just lift.

I have a suggestion/query for your site. You post your thoughts on each match every week, is it possible to have a comments section tab that we could open and comment on for that particular match. For example, I wanted to ask about the Tigers/Panthers match and thought now why can't I just comment in that post for that match.

It may encourage more interest from readers/viewers. Anyway, that's my brain wave for this decade, have a great Thursday.

For all of my followers, my tips will be posted later today after golf.

Mate

I can't see JKBubble's tips any where for this week. I've always thought he waits and waits right to the very end trying to wait out Footy Chick. Thats a very old tactic for tipsters who find themselves in front with 5-6 weeks to go, those trailing behind can pounce though.

Enjoy the footy.

Morning Tiger - I see that Corrective Services Qld has just recorded a positive COVID case. Didn't say where mate - but be aware.

With reference to last round comments, of which many don't go back to review - I'll place the answer here to your visual imaging.
I'm actually 6'3' in the old scale and weigh in at 83kgs, that's where the Big Pete came from. Some used to call be big fella in basketball days and then ones at work did. Then another bloke came along, at work (Storm supporter), much taller than me and a local first grade cricketer (opening bowler), but the name has stuck with me.

Re JK Bubble and his waiting out method. It can be an advantage to those who wait, but doesn't always work that way. Especially this season with the comp so "topsy turvy" for allsorts. I was late and often still am, due to arrival home from work and checking final teams, before lodging tips. But I think this year is gone for me, being patriotic towards my Eagles and knowing that NZ and Bulldogs will make surprise amends.

I truly feel sorry for Des Hasler and the players he has at his disposal. Now lost Suili for the season, but the players and some pathetic thinking, is where the finger needs to be pointed. Notice numerous tries come from Tafua's wing, or the very first one.

Keep well Tige and steady that ship, as you go.
Big Pete

Morning Tiger
Have a great day at golf I hope you can get a decent drink at the 19th.
You made an error in your post...
You put followers instead of follower.
Hi Christine.

Guru Craig's picture

Hi wal, hope all is well mate.

In response to my other new mate here..The Guru heard a great joke some time ago...about a Butcher, from Lygon st...but that bloke probably was tipping over 60%.

Tim 'Needs a nickname' Tszyu...Gooo-on son!! well fought, very patient victory. The Guru fondly remembers watching Kostya with his dad as a young fella, watched Tim Tszyu's fight with My own son...full circle. Future World Champ.

Bunnies have lost Dane Gagai to a hammie strain, which is significant as the great QLD centres replacement is on debut marking Maika Sivo. Still feel Souths have the edge. Just.

The Thinker's picture

@Tigerholic

It's a good idea actually. Not sure it can be done, but I will investigate.

As for the Tigers - I expect a big effort from them this round, but lacking the class across the paddock to actually beat the Panthers.

Should be a good game though.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Thats right butcher tiger should of just said christine that would of covered it.

Mary S's picture

Oh, I don't know Butcher & Rocket, I think "followers" was correct in Tigers comments, as I read everyone's posts - including yours!

Cheers,
Mary

Afternoon All and Afternoon to my Loyal Supporter/Supporters
Christine, our tips are in.

Butcher - Very funny mate

BigePete- I am going to work tomorrow for probably 6 hours or so, masks are compulsory and the place should be fairly quiet if it is locked down. I am only concerned with how will I eat my bacon and eggs through my mask:)

Enjoy the footy tonight folks, big upset coming with the Rabbits to eat the Eels.

I recall your post from last week saying "yes I owe Mark an apology" delivered to the Tiger. Mate I've waited a week and nothing and then recalled you saying "thats right it was that other QLD loser"
I like how you think about people north of the border. Let me know next time you're up here earning your pay and I'll try and catch up, maybe buy you a Great Northern.

I bought some reading glasses from chemist warehouse and I found a pair like John Lennon’s I was so excited I didn’t look at the strength I use 2.5 strength and they were 1.5. I look cool but have acquired more accidents than Frank Spencer.
Don’t worry Mark I’ll move to Monterey Keys and it’s 4 crosses all round.
