Round eight selections

Canberra Raiders vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Thursday night – GIO Stadium

The Raiders have a very solid record against the Bunnies in Canberra, but I'm doubting them this week. Omitted from their seventeen is their unofficial heart (Papalii) and their unofficial soul (Croker). Both have been below their best in recent outings but I still think the Raiders are a better unit with those two on the paddock. Even more concerning is the Raiders performances against the better sides this year. The Panthers beat them by 20 and the Eels beat them by 25, and getting run down in the second half by the Cowboys doesn't read well, particularly for this contest against a side that racked up 30 points in the second half to run down the Titans on the Coast. As for Benji Marshall, he was great value when he was one of the highest paid players in the NRL. Last week, earning two-fifths of buggar all, he put on a clinic in the halves and delivered one of his best performances ever. Walker stays at fullback and Marshall stays in the halves. It works. They'll win.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 7

Melbourne Storm vs Cronulla Sharks – Friday night – AAMI Park

I am not a rugby league team, and never was to be honest, but if I were a rugby league team and my next opponent was the Melbourne Storm in Melbourne I'd want to be ticking a few things on my 'very good football team' checklist. You'd want your forwards fit. You'd want your playmakers brimming with confidence. You'd want a team that had confidence in each other, the coaching staff, and the game plan. You'd want a game plan full stop. I'm not ticking a lot of boxes if I were the Cronulla Sharks, and a loss to the Bulldogs (sorry Bulldogs) is about as low as things go. The Sharks have three genuine first graders back for this game but it won't be enough. The big change for the Storm is Brandon Smith could be replacing the 200cm and 135kg (apparently) Nelson Asofa-Solomona. That's pretty funny.

Verdict – Storm by 10

Brisbane Broncos vs Gold Coast Titans – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

There have been 30 South East Queensland derbies thus far, and the Broncos have won 20 to the Titans ten. That looks like dominance, but the Titans have won five of the past seven so in reality it's the Titans that are the dominant team in this region at the minute. Last week they were part of a very entertaining game with the Rabbitohs but they did leak 30 points in the second half. While a little disappointing, it was a better effort than the Broncos who went back to their old ways with a 46-6 drubbing at the hands of the Eels. In their last two games the Broncos only tries have come through their forwards, and forwards don't score enough tries to win games of footy. Their spine continues to struggle in attack, and the Broncos have swung the axe again my dumping Croft and Deardon and bringing in Gamble (literally) and the very recently axed Milford. Kevvie Walters can only work with what he has to work with, but he doesn't have a lot to work with. Meanwhile the Titans attack looks terrific, and my mad suggestion that Fifita would be the team's top try scorer for the year is starting to look sensible. Don't worry...I'm still mad.

Verdict – Titans by 22

Penrith Panthers vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday afternoon – Carrington Park, Bathurst

That late night run through the Manly Corso by Tommy Turbo looks a costly mistake. Since he's back on the field the Sea Eagles have scored 76 points in two games and conceded just one try. If the competition was just two weeks old they'd be on top of the ladder. Saturday afternoon should give us a read on how good the Sea Eagles truly are. The Panthers remain undefeated and this is the first game of the season where they will name what I think is their best seventeen. While I'm expecting a genuine contest in what is the match of the round the Panthers are becoming that team that always find a way to win. Teams aim up to them and the Panthers stand up to it...and prevail, as they have done in their last two games. I'm expecting a similar outcome in this.

Verdict – Panthers by 8

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Parramatta Eels – Saturday night – Stadium Australia

Parramatta are averaging more than 28 points per game this season, and scored 81 points in their last two games (and both were away from home). The Bulldogs, winners last start to be fair, are averaging just 10 points per game. They have played top four teams on three occasions, and their losing margins in those games were 28, 38 and 34. I've done the maths so you don't have to.

Verdict – Parramatta by 26

Newcastle Knights vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

I've been holding back on making a decision on this game as I have a feeling Tedesco could be a late withdrawal. The Chooks are, to their credit, taking more care with their players and concussion issues than anyone. Right here right now (early Thursday morning) he is playing so I'll run with that. If he doesn't, expect Manu to play where fullback (where he has been terrific when needed). The Knights competed with the Panthers for much of the 80 minutes in round seven but eventually faded late. I give them a real chance here but I can't quite tip them. The only teams to beat the Roosters this season are the Rabbitohs and the Storm, and the Knights are clearly a level below.

Verdict – Roosters by 2

New Zealand Warriors vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon – Central Coast Stadium

Cowboys coach Todd Payten takes on his old team and you'd think he'd have a fair understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of his opponent here. Meanwhile his new side are starting to warm into their season, winning three in a row for the first time in a very long time. I expect they've gained a lot of confidence out of that come from behind victory over the Raiders in round seven, and the return of Jason Taumalolo can only make them stronger. They're the outsider in this and probably should be, but I'm happy to tip them here.

Verdict – Cowboys by 4

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Wests Tigers – Sunday night – Win Stadium

There's been plenty of attention focused on the self-imploding Broncos but the Tigers have a sniff of the train wrecks about them at the minute too. I feel like they've been rebuilding now for ten years, and I still can't work out what they're trying to build. If I still think the Dragons are going to make the top eight (and I do) then they'll need to be winning this. Note the likely return of Ben Hunt. Walking around on a broken leg. I can't get you out of my head.

Verdict – Dragons by 8

Greetings everyone

I have updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp after round seven. Congrats to Tough Bunny who top scored for the round with 7 from 8. Outstanding work there.

If anyone notices any errors with the scoring just let me know and I will investigate.

I will have my previews and selections published on Wednesday.

Hi Boss,

I think Cossey Posse had 7/8 too.

Thank Mary S....saved me again :-)

Tipping scores have been updated, and yes COSSEY POSSE also got 7 from 8 (only missed the Tigers vs Sea Eagles game).

A pretty close tipping comp so far! I'm certainly enjoying the footy and loving that some of the games that might first be thought of as 'just check the scores' are turning out to be edge of the seat :)

Hello Folks
A very angry, embarrassed, annoyed, devastated Tiger has just bought tickets for the Magic Round at the persistence of my youngest son who follows the Storm.

It only takes 24 hours for Tiger to not talk footy, ignore the comments and sarcasm for him to move past the loss.

There have been a lot of calls for Maguire's head on a site that I am on, for me I think that if we don't start to blood some younger players who are killing it in reserve grade, the coach then has to answer some questions. Has the coach lost the dressing room??

Just another dismal season as a Tigers fan.

Have a great week folks, stay safe

The Butcher's picture

Tiger
The Tigers and Broncos two weeks ago both were in winning positions and choked. If they take the big scalps then they could of turned their season’s around look what a win had done for the Eagles and Cowboys but instead last weekend they both had 40 put on them. You never know the Broncos play the Titans in their local derby and Tigers play the Dragons who seem to be sliding with 2 losses in a row.
But can you smell the upset?

tigerholic's picture

Hello Butcher
My ability to sniff an upset has waned just as much as my Tigers ability to sniff out a win.
There has been a lot of talk on FB about what a mess the Tigers business is in, will just have to ride it out and hope for a brighter future in following Lawn Bowls.

Have a great week

Tiger

Hey Steel
Just finished my dinner and selected on U-tube Iron's "run to the hills" haven't listened for a while, then "black betty" by RamJam. A glass of wine and all is well with the world.

Tiger
I feel your pain as I thought the Broncs had turned it around in the Panthers game in round 6 then the Eels put 46/6 on them in Darwin in hot and humid conditions which surely the Broncs should have handled better. I wouldn't want to be an NRL coach for any money.

Hi Mark,

Had a chuckle at your post which I read just as I was about to nod off for the night for some "Infinite Dreams"....not a classic like RTTH but still a goodie!!

I'm with you! Iron Maiden have to be one of, if not THE best metal bands I have ever heard! 7th Son is probably my all time favourite album.

Scotty Seahawk
Nice to hear from you. Steel and I seem to have similiar tastes in a lot of things and looking at NuLif3's post he agrees about Iron Maiden. Must profess my ignorance as I always thought they were an American band. Remember that song by Wheatus " teenage dirt bag" where they were the band of choice. Not sure about Steel's choice of a posting name though. I have listened to several tracks by SP and they are very naughty boys.

ScottySeahawk's picture

I remember Wheatus haha, a one hit wonder American Pie soundtrack band. Yes Steel Panther aren't for the faint hearted or easily offended, just a bit of fun haha. Amazing musicians but can understand peoples opinion of them.

Iron Maiden are the greatest metal band of all time, Powerslave & Seventh Son definitely my favorite albums for sure.

"Dia duit gach duine" i dteanga ní mo theanga féin,

A wee bit early this week as I have Wednesday off. Reason? Our “idiot” Premier here in WA locked us down for the Anzac weekend 😣. He lifted that midnight Monday (how kind) but then made masks mandatory (in public, at work etc) until this weekend 😱. All this for two (2) cases mind you. Clown 🤡. Like a lot of people, I find it difficult to breathe in them so I have to take alternate days off otherwise I’d have a freakin’ meltdown. Sorry if this upsets anyone but in my mind they are not healthy, either physically or mentally. Some of you may disagree but each to their own eh?

The Panthers’ last 2 games against somewhat “lesser lights” (no offence to the Broncos and Knights fans) have shown me that they’re not unbeatable and I’m getting closer and closer to working out what other sides need to do in order to knock them off. Run at them through the middle, get your defence up in their faces as quick as you can and when in attack, spread it wide. Yeah, I might be full of horse doody but still reckon it’d work.

If and when they do lose a game, it will do them the world of good. It will get them more “focused” than they already are. And that my friends, is “scary” for the rest of the competition 😱. OK, let’s do this thang…

Raiders vs. Rabbitohs 40-60 @ GIO Stadium
Ladder Position = Rabbitohs
Bookies Favourite = Rabbitohs

Raiders
Yet again the Raiders failed to show up in the second half. That has to be a worry for Ricky. A pretty good first half saw the Raiders leading the Cowboys 24-12 at the break last week. The second half from the Raiders was (sorta) woeful. So was their completion rate (29/42) and kick defusal rate (38%). No points scored and they got tired and fell away and lost a close one 26-24. I realise this is a big “if” but if they hadn’t let the Cowboys score a minute before half-time they might’ve just snuck in. Yeah, coulda, shoulda, woulda I know 😁. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 51%
Completion Rate - 69% (29/42)
Offloads - 9
Kick Defusal - 38%
Missed Tackles - 28
Errors - 13

Rabbitohs
The Rabbitohs got a big shock in the first half last week against the Titans. Trailing 24-10 at the break and things weren’t looking too good. They upped the ante in the second half with an almost flawless demolition which was typified when they scored 20 points in a 14 minute period early in the half. They simply had too many guns for the Titans in the end saw them run out 40-30 winners. Benji Marshall put on a dazzling display for the Rabbitohs. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 54%
Completion Rate - 89% (34/38)
Line Breaks - 7
Missed Tackles - 47
Ineffective Tackles - 15
Errors - 5
Penalties Conceded - 5

Verdict: I can’t see the Raiders improving enough to win this. Rabbitohs for me.

Storm vs. Sharks 80-20 @ AAMI
Ladder Position = Storm
Bookies Favourite = Storm

Storm
The Storm were (sorta) challenged for the first 20 minutes or so last week against the Warriors but they simply put themselves into gear after that and ran away with it. While the points in the second half were shared (16-all) the Storm’s first half lead saw them run out comfortable 42-20 winners. They did seem to relax a bit towards the end and let the Warriors score a couple of tries in the last 7 minutes. All in all, another “clinical” display from a very good Storm side ticking along nicely. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 48%
Completion Rate - 72% (28/39)
Line Breaks - 10
Missed Tackles - 22
Ineffective Tackles - 15
Errors - 13
Ruck Infringements - 3

Sharks
Quite surprised the Sharks were behind 18-0 to the Bulldogs at half-time last week to be honest. A slightly better second half but still not enough and the Sharks lost a tense battle 18-12. Overall I thought the Sharks’ effort was pretty poor and their attack didn’t quite click against a stout Bulldogs defence. Again, just like the Tigers from some weeks ago, the home fans booed their players off at half-time. You know things are bad when that happens. A very frustrating time lately for the Sharks. Work to be done? Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 58%
Completion Rate - 66% (29/44)
Post Contact Metres - 871
Missed Tackles - 16
Ineffective Tackles - 9
Errors - 16
Penalties Conceded - 6

Verdict: The Sharks have a snowflake in hell’s chance here. Storm comfortably.

Broncos vs. Titans 35-65 @ Suncorp
Ladder Position = Titans
Bookies Favourite = Titans

Broncos
The Broncos were (sorta) looking OK when they scored their try to even it up 6-6 last week but the Eels put 3 tries past them and all of a sudden the Broncos were heading into the sheds 24-6 behind. Their second half was most disappointing. Letting in 40 unanswered points in the match is never ever gonna win you games of footy I’m afraid. Missing 49 tackles won’t either. The Broncos defence simply fell apart under the pressure that was put on it by the Eels and the Broncos ended up getting walloped 46-6. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 41%
Completion Rate - 66% (25/38)
Line Breaks - 3
Missed Tackles - 49
Ineffective Tackles - 26
Errors - 15
Penalties Conceded - 4
Ruck Infringements - 5

Titans
A really good first half last week from the Titans saw them leading the Rabbitohs 24-10 at the break. Fifita’s hat-trick and Fogarty’s try were standouts. They lost the match in the second half when they only scored another 6 points and let the Rabbitohs in for 30. Not quite sure what their problem was but they seemed to buckle when the pressure was applied. Yeah, their second half effort most definitely cost them the game. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 46%
Completion Rate - 85% (29/34)
Line Breaks - 9
Missed Tackles - 30
Ineffective Tackles - 11
Errors - 5
Penalties Conceded - 4

Verdict: They were off the boil last week but the Titans should bounce back and win this.

Panthers vs. Manly 70-30 @ Bathurst
Ladder Position = Panthers
Bookies Favourite = Panthers

Panthers
In a pretty engaging contest last week the Panthers went into half-time leading the Knights 10-6. They put enough stress on the Knights in the second half to win easily in the end 24-6. The Knights definitely challenged the Panthers last week but in the end the Panthers’ class prevailed. Being the professional side they are, they just stuck at it and did what they had to do. Another good effort from the Panthers, especially from Cleary, Burton and Luai. Will the momentum ever end? Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 55%
Completion Rate - 82% (40/49)
Post Contact Metres - 763
Bombs - 13
Missed Tackles - 20
Ineffective Tackles - 9
Errors - 11
Ruck Infringements - 3

Manly
Manly were behind 6-0 after 12 minutes last week against the Tigers but they slowly worked their way back into the game and from the 30’ mark were in total control. The Tigers had no answer to the Manly game plan. Seems like Turbo has made a difference after all. A 40 point turnaround and a completely dominant second half saw the Sea Eagles romp in 40-6. Not much else to say other than a thoroughly professional and well deserved win. Are the Boys from Brookvale back? Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 51%
Completion Rate - 73% (33/45)
Line Breaks - 8
Missed Tackles - 16
Ineffective Tackles - 15
Errors - 14
Penalties Conceded - 4
Ruck Infringements - 5

Verdict: As good as Manly were last week, I don’t think they’re quite up to the Panthers’ standard just yet. Panthers for me.

Bulldogs vs. Eels 20-80 @ Stadium Australia
Ladder Position = Eels
Bookies Favourite = Eels

Bulldogs
Finally, the Bulldogs are on the board! They scored 18 points in the first 22 minutes (which was very good) but scored nothing after that (not very good) but it was still enough to see them run out 18-12 winners. The Bulldogs controlled most of the first half and their defence was very good all game. Yeah, they made some errors, missed some tackles (a lot actually) and didn’t have a whole lot of possession but they won’t care too much about that now that they’ve won their first game of the year 💪. On balance I thought they deserved their win given the tenacity, determination and spirit they showed. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 42%
Completion Rate - 83% (33/40)
Missed Tackles - 40
Ineffective Tackles - 21
Errors - 8
Penalties Conceded - 8

Eels
Despite a slow start last week against the Broncos, the Eels never really looked like losing. Leading 24-6 at the break, the Eels went on with it in the second half and absolutely smacked the Broncos and ended up winning very impressively 46-6. It should be noted that after being locked at 6-6 at the 12’ mark, the Eels put on 40 unanswered points. A very imposing display indeed. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 59%
Completion Rate - 77% (34/44)
Line Breaks - 11
Forced Drop Outs - 4
Missed Tackles - 24
Ineffective Tackles - 22
Errors - 11
Penalties Conceded - 4
Ruck Infringements - 4

Verdict: Yeah, this is easy. Eels to win.

Knights vs. Roosters 40-60 @ McDonald Jones
Ladder Position = Roosters
Bookies Favourite = Roosters

Knights
The Knights were right in it last week against the Panthers. Well, up until half-time that is. Only being down 10-6 at the break must’ve given them some hope. Unfortunately they weren’t able to score any second half points and they started to tire late in the match and eventually lost a disappointing one 24-6. Yeah they were valiant in defeat but the Panthers were just too good. The fend that Starford To'a put on Dylan Edwards in scoring the Knights’ only try of the match was just beautiful to watch 😍. Really liked the way they (Kurt Mann in particular) applied themselves and stood up to the competition leaders. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 45%
Completion Rate - 81% (34/42)
Post Contact Metres - 494
Missed Tackles - 27
Ineffective Tackles - 14
Errors - 9
Ruck Infringements - 3

Roosters
It took the Roosters a while to get moving last week against the Dragons. I think the Dragons scoring first after 10 minutes may have gotten their attention. The Roosters got one back 4 minutes later and after Jordan Pereira got binned, they ran in another two. The Roosters controlled the second half and put on another 18 while the Dragons only managed the solitary try which was enough to get the Roosters the 34-10 victory. Their attack finally fell into place and young Sam Walker had a standout game. The most pleasing thing for me was that the missed tackle count dropped from 51 (the previous game against the Storm) down to just 19 last week. Also loved how Manu filled in for Tedesco. Still some little things my BBB have to work on but just glad they improved on their previous effort. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 52%
Completion Rate - 78% (32/41)
Line Breaks - 9
Missed Tackles - 19
Ineffective Tackles - 16
Errors - 12

Verdict: Roosters. Begurk! 🐔 Begurk! 🐔

Warriors vs. Cowboys 60-40 @ Central Coast
Ladder Position = Warriors
Bookies Favourite = Warriors

Warriors
The Warriors did pretty well against the Storm for the first 20 minutes last week. Something happened and they let in 4 tries in 12 minutes (and 3 of those came in 6 minutes) and the writing was on the wall. A pretty even second half, albeit they scored 2 of their 3 second half tries in the last 7 minutes. But in the end the undermanned Warriors were simply outclassed and went down 42-20. They had a decent crack against a very good side at least. There’s more wins in store, don’t worry about that. By all accounts, young Reece Walsh had a pretty good effort in his debut match. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 52%
Completion Rate - 84% (32/38)
Line Breaks - 3
Missed Tackles - 30
Ineffective Tackles - 26
Errors - 9

Cowboys
An OK sort of effort from the Cowboys last week saw them 24-12 behind (but still in touch) at the break against the Raiders. Much better in the second half and they put on 14 points and kept the Raiders scoreless to win a thriller 26-24. They dominated in the second half and the Raiders simply had no answer to the Cowboys attacking and defensive efforts. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 49%
Completion Rate - 89% (32/36)
Missed Tackles - 34
Errors - 8

Verdict: This one is difficult. Based on how the Warriors went against the Storm compared to how the Cowboys went against a lacklustre second-half Raiders, I’m thinking the Warriors might just have the edge here.

Dragons vs. Tigers 65-35 @ Win
Ladder Position = Dragons
Bookies Favourite = Dragons

Dragons
The Dragons scored the first and last tries of the match last week against the Roosters but were ultimately outgunned 34-10. They started really well and the try from Tariq Sims was a beauty. Regardless of who it is, I just love big forwards scoring tries like that. Basic footy is best (and easier) sometimes. It’s getting to the stage where I desperately wanna see Tariq score at least one try every game he plays. I must say he’s a favourite of mine 💪. When the Roosters finally got their game together in the last half of the first 40, Jordan Pereira got himself binned which most definitely didn’t help the Dragons’ cause. They let in two more tries and seemed to lose their enthusiasm and ability to counter the Roosters’ attack. After a promising last few weeks it all came crashing down unfortunately. It must’ve been disappointing that the Dragons couldn’t capitalise when Marschke was in the sin bin. Oh well, thems’ the breaks. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 48%
Completion Rate - 84% (32/38)
Line Breaks - 3
Missed Tackles - 33
Ineffective Tackles - 24
Errors - 7

Tigers
What the hell happened to the Tigers last week against Manly? They were leading 6-0 after 12 minutes and then … nothing 😱. I think I know what happened actually. “Manly happened”. I really thought the Tigers would do a lot better than they did given their recent efforts but how wrong I was. Manly simply slapped them from the 30’ mark and in the end the Tigers lost a disappointing one 40-6. I just don’t know how else to say it but the Tigers were very poor last week, especially their middle defence which struggled. Where to from here? Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 49%
Completion Rate - 79% (31/39)
Line Breaks - 1
Missed Tackles - 36
Ineffective Tackles - 11
Errors - 9
Penalties Conceded - 5
Ruck Infringements - 4

Verdict: I’m jumping off the Tigers until such time as they show some desire. Dragons to win this one.

Let’s finish off with another “Song of the Week”.

Most definitely not to most people’s taste but I reckon it’s a cracker. How can I describe this one? Weirdly mesmerizing maybe?

I see you've worked really hard on reducing your posts. This one is a marathon but I did read it all. Thank you for everything you put into it.

Newbie,

I have to agree with Mark on your song choice this week. It didn't mesmerise me....it nearly put me to sleep. I like something with a bit more drive & energy but as we always say "each to their own" aye. Hope the recent lockdown in Perth wasn't too tough on you my friend!! We are sure in a crazy world right now.

Ahhhh.....The Trooper Mr Ashford. A true Maiden classic!!!!

Been out tonight. Just sat down to Brisbane levelling it up at 22 all. Couldn't believe the commentators when they said it was 22 zip to the Titans. Can the Broncos go on with it & come away with a much needed win?

AHHHHHHHHHH Thank you Ponies. 3/3 for the first time in a long while. Rocket, did you get the point as well?

No and yes baggy
We can only hope this is on display next week.

It was a pretty good game to watch actually. Thought the first 15 minutes was going for a new record, but credit to the boys, they dug deep and came back. Not shabby at all.

Agree with you Baggy- a good game to watch and encouraging for Broncos fans to see the fight-back and teamwork.
Great result - not for my tipping mind!

Cheers,
Mary

Hey Mary S & Baggy
Like you I thought it was going to be another horror night for the Broncs
They showed real team spirit and got the win. Was very enjoyable to watch.
Didn't see the Panthers/Manly game but appears Penrith didn't get it all their own way.

The Broncos v Titans match reminded me of the maths equation
Two minuses makes a positive.

Afternoon Folks

Is it too late to change my tip:(

Tigers still in it but we need to reduce the errors and take advantage when we are in the opposition 20.

You can't be serious. Titans/Broncos was an enjoyable contest to watch.
I know you love big scores by your chooks over opposition but is it really enjoyable to flog the opposition? I would have thought a close game where both were competitive is more fun. I seem to remember the Storm flogging you by 20/4 in round 6, Did you enjoy that?

Well done to your boys. They fought hard and got the win. I did think the Dragons were a bit hard done by with some decisions buy hey thats footy. Now we are on to round 9. Good luck to all.

Evening All

I thought my earlier comment would have drawn more of an attack from my old sparring partner Butcher. Maybe he's watching the replay of the Tigers fantastic win today all the way from Wollongong.

I see there were a few that tipped the Tigers, not many though. How many times have I encouraged everyone to back their teams, Rocket where are you mate.

Go the Mighty Tigers
