Melbourne Storm vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Thursday night – AAMI Park
No shortage of high-profile players returning from suspensions for this game - Harry Grant and Cameron (Cold Cold Heart) Munster for the Storm and Latrell Mitchell for the Rabbitohs. The Storm maintained their astonishing round one record with a hard-fought win over the Tigers, but at what cost? Christian Welch and George Jennings have just had their injuries confirmed as season-ending, while Brandon Smith will be out for (at least) weeks with a broken hand. There's no shortage of pundits willing to put the boot into the Rabbitohs after their surprise loss to the Broncos. While below their best, I feel some are under-estimating how good the Broncos were on the night. Notably, the Rabbits conceded just two tries in that game, and one of those was an intercept. Ilias and Walker will improve with time, and clearly Mitchell adds spark in attack. For the Storm, Munster will have a point to prove after off-field controversies. He looks fit and focused, and when he's on he's arguably the most exciting player in the game. With a spine of Grant, Munster, Hughes and Papenhuyzen, the Melbourne Storm are hard to go past. They're also playing at their spiritual home for the first time in a long time. The club has an impressive 35,000 members signed up for the year. Should be a fair crowd on hand even with all of that AFL mischief stealing all the attention.
Verdict – Storm by 8
Result – Storm 15 defeated Rabbitohs 14
St George Illawarra Dragons vs Penrith Panthers – Friday night – Netstrata Jubilee Stadium
The Dragons were impressive enough with their round one win over the Warriors, but the team of the week was clearly the Panthers. The defending premiers had their doubters (myself included) when Cleary was ruled out but that was a dominant display against the Sea Eagles. They've been the most consistent team in the NRL for the last two seasons and they look set to continue the trend. For the Dragons, Tariq Sims looks likely to return for the injured Aaron Woods. Rumours have emerged that the Storm are keen to pick up Sims to bolster their forward ranks this season. The Dragons haven't gone out of their way to quash that rumour either...so that mid-season switch appears likely.
Verdict – Panthers by 10
Result – Panthers 20 defeated Dragons 16
Sydney Roosters vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – Sydney Cricket Ground
15th plays 16th (yes, really) but it's probably the game of the round anyway. When you get to see Tedesco and Trbojevic on the same paddock you'd be silly not to watch. Both sides will be stung by round one losses and no-one wants to be 0 from 2 in this competition. I'm leaning slightly to the Sea Eagles here, based on the assumption that it's better to lose to the Panthers than it is to lose to the Knights. They also get an extra two days to prepare for this game, which can't hurt. Victor Radley is likely to be named for the Roosters. I'm a fan of the bloke but he might want to spend some time on his defensive technique or he'll be medically retired before he turns 25...and he's 24.
Verdict – Sea Eagles by 1
Result – Roosters 26 defeated Sea Eagles 12
Gold Coast Titans vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – CBus Super Stadium
I'm optimistic about the Titans finals prospects this season, and there was much to like about their narrow loss to the Eels in Sydney in round one. Like the Titans coach, I thought a few things didn't fall their way on the day. Importantly they never gave up and went very close to getting the win. With AJ Brimson returning this week I expect them to improve. Reese Walsh is the big inclusion for the Warriors and he's not the only one, with Ash Taylor coming in for the injured Shaun Johnson. Clearly the return of Walsh is a positive, but a lot of changes in key positions can be disruptive.
Verdict – Titans by 4
Result – Titans 20 defeated Warriors 18
Cronulla Sharks vs Parramatta Eels – Saturday night – Pointsbet Stadium
I was impressed with Nicho Hynes in his debut for the Sharks, but that combination with Moylan in the halves is going to take some work. They get another chance this weekend. Parramatta got the season underway with a win. They are often one of the better (and perhaps best) sides in the early rounds most years, and that narrow win over the Titans was full of quality. These sides met early in the year in 2021 and the Eels dominated. I don't think they'll dominate this time, but I think they'll win.
Verdict – Eels by 4
Result – Sharks 18 defeated Eels 16
North Queensland Cowboys vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – Queensland Country Bank Stadium
The Cowboys were near enough to full strength in round one and struggled against a team that have been struggling for quite some time. There were some positive signs and they did defend well, but the Raiders will throw more at the Cowboys defence than the Bulldogs were able to muster. The only thing that can beat the Raiders is the humidity. That might do it, but I can't tip against them.
Verdict – Raiders by 8
Result – Cowboys 26 defeated Raiders 6
Newcastle Knights vs Wests Tigers – Sunday afternoon – McDonald Jones Stadium
The Knights never have too much trouble drawing a crowd to their home games, but they could sell out the joint on Sunday afternoon if the weather is fair. Next to no-one gave them a hope against the Chooks but it was one of the more dominant wins of the round. James Tamou returns for the Tigers to bolster their forwards but the Knights pack will have the crowd behind them.
Verdict – Knights by 10
Result – Knights 26 defeated Tigers 4
Canterbury Bulldogs vs Brisbane Broncos – Sunday afternoon – Accor Stadium
Those at the game will notice the stadium has this enormous 120 metre wide screen at one of the ground now. You'll probably spend most of your time watching that instead of the action on the field. After lean seasons it feels weird saying that these sides are undefeated heading into round two...but here we are. Both teams also held their opponents to just four points in round one, so expect to see a tight low-scoring contest here. Assuming it is a tight contest the steadying influence of Adam Reynolds, on debut for the Broncos, could prove the difference.
Verdict – Broncos by 2
Result – Broncos 16 defeated Bulldogs 10

Greetings football fans
Well that was a difficult first round for many of us. I have updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp after week one. While most of us struggled to get around half the games right our diehard Bulldogs fan Taka made it look easy with a very impressive 7 from 8. If the Bulldogs keep winning he will be hard to beat.
If anyone sees any errors in the scoring just let me know and I will check it out.
As you can see the tipping page for round two is here - feel free to add your tips at any time.

"Dia duit gach duine" i dteanga ní mo theanga féin,
Absolute shocker to start the year off as far as my tipping went. Only getting 2/8 is a bit embarrassing. Just as embarrassing as the Roosters’ effort 😱. Sheesh! This week the Broncos will be boosted (no, nothing to do with the jab 😁) with Reynolds finally making his debut appearance and the return of Kobe Hetherington. Interested to see how TPJ goes for the Bulldogs. Sad to see Christian Welch and George Jennings both injured and out for the season. Yikes! It looks like the length of this post didn’t reduce all that much. Old habits are hard to break I suppose. This might be harder than I thought 🤓. OK, let’s do this thing …
Storm vs. Rabbitohs @ AAMI Park
Probability @ 60-40
Ladder Position = Storm
Bookies Favourite = Storm
Storm
Even with serious injuries to Welch, Jennings and Smith, it was another impressive effort from the Storm last week which saw them come away with a 26-16 victory over the Tigers. Went about their job in a professional and clinical manner and did what good teams do. Great contributions from Jahrome Hughes, Ryan Papenhuyzen and Christian Welch. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 45%
Completion Rate - 80% (28/35)
Post Contact Metres - 414
Tackle Breaks - 21
Missed Tackles - 26
Errors - 9
Penalties Conceded - 9
Rabbitohs
OK, I realise Souths were without Reynolds, Gagai, Mitchell and (coach) Bennett but I couldn’t believe what I saw from them last week. To be honest, I thought they were pretty poor and got the feeling they threw in the towel towards the end. Their second half was riddled with unforced errors and their edges were unable to penetrate like we’re used to seeing. Overall I’d have to say the effort from last year’s grand finalists was disappointing and to be frank, they never looked likely. At least they’ll get Latrell Mitchell back for this week’s match. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 47%
Completion - 66% (30/45)
Post Contact Metres - 541
Tackle Breaks - 19
Missed Tackles - 24
Errors - 14
Penalties Conceded - 7
Verdict: Tough one. One one hand the Storm got it done without key players and on the other, will Latrell inject some spark into a disappointing Rabbitohs? At home it has to be the Storm for me.
Dragons vs. Panthers @ Kogarah
Probability @ 35-65
Ladder Position = Panthers
Bookies Favourite = Panthers
Dragons
The Dragons have picked up their first win since “that BBQ” finally getting over the Warriors 26-16 last week. The Dragons’ new recruits seemed to fit right in and at half-time they led 14-10. The Warriors hit the front shortly after the break but fell away and the Dragons fought back and when Mbye scored with 7 minutes to go it was done and dusted. "We had to win it twice," Griffin said after the Dragons squandered their strong start. "But I thought that was the most pleasing part of the night... once they got in front of us I thought we played some of our best football... and we were a bit too strong in the end." Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 57%
Completion Rate - 76% (30/39)
Post Contact Metres - 640
Tackle Breaks - 34
Missed Tackles - 26
Errors - 9
Penalties Conceded - 4
Panthers
Another impressive effort from the Panthers last week saw them come away with a 28-6 victory over Manly. Went about their job in a professional and clinical manner and did what good teams do. Sean O'Sullivan starred in the absence of Nathan Cleary. Great contributions from Sean O'Sullivan (obviously), Stephen Crichton and Liam Martin. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 59%
Completion Rate - 86% (39/45)
Post Contact Metres - 806
Tackle Breaks - 47
Missed Tackles - 24
Errors - 4
Penalties Conceded - 7
Verdict: I’ll stick with the Panthers until they come unstuck.
Roosters vs. Manly @ SCG
Probability @ 55-45
Ladder Position = Roosters
Bookies Favourite = Roosters
Roosters
The Roosters were lacking coherence and seemed confused last week and got ambushed. They made too many silly mistakes and their defence was lazy. After the disallowed try early on, the Roosters fell away. If not for a penalty right on half-time and the Momirovski consolation try with 4 minutes left, it would have been an embarrassing whitewash. To be brutally honest, the 20-6 scoreline was flattering to say the least. Very disappointing effort. Four tries to one told the story. Even with the return of Keary, Collins and Manu, I’m not really worried about the loss. I’m thinking (hoping) that they’ll just need a bit more time to get back in the “groove” so to speak. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 46%
Completion Rate - 65% (25/38)
Post Contact Metres - 555
Tackle Breaks - 13
Missed Tackles - 35
Errors - 12
Penalties Conceded - 7
Manly
Manly were well held by the Panthers defence last week and Turbo just wasn’t able to shine or get things happening. Manly were dominated in possession and field position. They were under the pump for most of the first half but scored a try a minute from the break through Ethan Bullemor. It was the one and only time they managed to find some space. Everyone should know by now that Manly have a pretty average record as far as the opening game of the season goes (the Roosters are in the same boat) and last week was another example of that. No cause for alarm though, they’ll come good. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 41%
Completion Rate - 83% (30/36)
Post Contact Metres - 485
Tackle Breaks - 23
Missed Tackles - 47
Errors - 8
Penalties Conceded - 4
Verdict: Manly will find this a whole lot easier than last week and I would not be surprised in the slightest if they got up. If they do, they’ll do it easy. Having said that, I’m gonna give my BBB the benefit of the doubt after last week’s shocker and tip ‘em to get the chocolates. Begurk! 🐔 Begurk! 🐔
Titans vs. Warriors @ CBUS
Probability @ 65-35
Ladder Position = Titans
Bookies Favourite = Titans
Titans
The one that got away I reckon. The Titans had the opportunity and they matched it with the Eels last week but in the end they fell 32-28. They were in front after scoring a quick (converted) try one minute after the break but somehow lost the spark to build on their 2 point lead. Then again, it may have been that the Eels got a roll on. The Titans did show some resilience and their second half defence was outstanding. The 3 penalty goals Moses took were proof of that. Don’t worry, there’s plenty of wins in store for the Titans this year. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 43%
Completion Rate - 67% (21/31)
Post Contact Metres - 387
Tackle Breaks - 33
Missed Tackles - 31
Errors - 12
Penalties Conceded - 7
Warriors
In a scrappy and sometimes heated match (that wasn't decided until the final 20 minutes) the Warriors let one slip and went down 26-16 to the Dragons last week. The Warriors took a little time to settle into the game but some poor discipline didn’t help their cause. A converted try after the break saw them in front for the first time in the match but from then on they just seemed to switch off the intensity. Some lazy defence allowed Moses Mbye to score with 7 minutes left and the Warriors’ chances were gone. "To get there (16-14 lead) was a good effort but we sort of lost our way a bit, turned over a lot of ball," Warriors coach Nathan Brown said. "Shaun had some positive points and negative, like a lot of blokes." Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 43%
Completion Rate - 66% (26/39)
Post Contact Metres - 508
Tackle Breaks - 25
Missed Tackles - 34
Errors - 13
Penalties Conceded - 8
Verdict: The Titans showed a lot more than the Warriors did last week and fairly confident they’ll get the win here. Titans for me.
Sharks vs. Eels @ Shark Park
Probability @ 45-55
Ladder Position = Eels
Bookies Favourite = Eels
Sharks
Last week the Raiders were controlling the first half before the Sharks snapped into gear and surged back into the game. They looked more incisive after the break, dominating possession and territory. They scored 2 tries in 4 minutes just after the break and with just 8 minutes left were leading 19-18 courtesy of a Matt Moylan field goal. Unfortunately for them, the Raiders scored a try just 3 minutes later and held on. I really did think the Sharks were gonna pinch that one but it wasn’t to be. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 46%
Completion Rate - 67% (23/34)
Post Contact Metres - 376
Tackle Breaks - 29
Missed Tackles - 44
Errors - 12
Penalties Conceded - 7
Eels
The Eels won an exciting encounter against the Titans last week 32-28. They looked pretty sharp in the first half and scored 5 tries but let the Titans score 4 of their own. The second half was a tussle and at one stage the Eels found themselves behind and they only got up after Moses kicked 3 penalty goals in the last 14 minutes. They would’ve been happy to take the points for the win. Only downside was young Sean Russell getting busted ribs. Welcome to first grade buddy. Really thought they should’ve done more considering the amount of time they spent camped on the Titans’ line. Mind you, the Titans did defend well in that second half. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 57%
Completion Rate - 77% (28/36)
Post Contact Metres - 499
Tackle Breaks - 31
Missed Tackles - 33
Errors - 8
Penalties Conceded - 1
Verdict: The Sharks will find the Eels tougher opposition than the Raiders were. I think the Eels will have a little more class and should (in theory) win this.
Cowboys vs. Raiders @ Townsville
Probability @ 40-60
Ladder Position = Raiders
Bookies Favourite = Raiders
Cowboys
In a pretty dull and lacklustre exhibition last week (from both sides) the Cowboys lost an error riddled match 6-4 to the Bulldogs. After scoring a try at the 15 minutes mark the Cowboys should’ve been able to do more when Hetherington got binned but they couldn’t and I reckon that’s where they lost it. Well, that and the countless silly plays and decisions they were guilty of. Not a great start to the year it must be said. Mind you, that try that was disallowed with a few minutes to go would’ve been heartbreaking. It looked good in real time but then the bunker stuck its nose in. That’s how the ball bounces sometimes. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 53%
Completion Rate - 65% (27/41)
Post Contact Metres - 638
Tackle Breaks - 29
Missed Tackles - 20
Errors - 12
Penalties Conceded - 7
Raiders
The Raiders fought off a second half Sharks comeback and got themselves a well deserved 24-19 win last week. Canberra started the stronger side and scored the first try after 8 minutes but some average goal line defence allowed the Sharks to get a sneaky scrum base try. The Raiders’ dominance was restored when CNK scored just before half-time. The Raiders found themselves down 19-18 but some Raiders grit and a late try from Hudson Young got them home. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 54%
Completion Rate - 70% (29/41)
Post Contact Metres - 425
Tackle Breaks - 44
Missed Tackles - 29
Errors - 13
Penalties Conceded - 5
Verdict: From what I saw of the Cowboys last week I just can’t make a case for them here. Raiders for me.
Knights vs. Tigers @ McDonald Jones
Probability @ 65-35
Ladder Position = Knights
Bookies Favourite = Knights
Knights
The Knights capitalised on the lacklustre performance from the Roosters and ran away with a well deserved 20-6 win last week. They impressed with the amount of work they put in against their more fancied opposition. The Knights’ win was no fluke, they played classy and committed football and their defensive performance was very good. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 54%
Completion Rate - 79% (34/43)
Post Contact Metres - 677
Tackle Breaks - 35
Missed Tackles - 13
Errors - 10
Penalties Conceded - 7
Tigers
The Tigers had a great first half last week against the Storm and scored after just 6 minutes. Another try and a penalty goal saw them leading 10-4 at the break. The Tigers came out in the second half with more of the effort they showed in the first 40 but missing 3 conversions and a poor edge defence let the classy Storm back in. The Tigers’ attack did look good but they let their game slip in the last 20-25 minutes and the Storm got over them 26-16. The opportunity was there and even though they fell, there seems to be some good signs looking forward. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 55%
Completion Rate - 74% (26/35)
Post Contact Metres - 498
Tackle Breaks - 26
Missed Tackles - 21
Errors - 11
Penalties Conceded - 7
Verdict: Do I judge this on a 20-6 win against (supposedly) good opposition or a 26-16 loss to one of the best? The only concern I have for the Tigers is whether they can run out the full 80. What the heck, let’s get crazy here and tip the Tigers.
Bulldogs vs. Broncos @ Stadium Aust
Probability @ 40-60
Ladder Position = Broncos
Bookies Favourite = Broncos
Bulldogs
In a pretty dull and lacklustre exhibition last week (from both sides) the Bulldogs scraped home against the Cowboys in an error riddled match 6-4. Their first half was dull but they did score the only try of the second half (which was converted by new recruit Matt Burton) and that was enough to get them home. As they often do, the Bulldogs defended stoutly and it was all that much admirable considering Hetherington got binned half way through the first 40. It was an exhausting way to get their first win of the season but hey, they’re in the top 8 aren’t they? Still some work to do in their attack but a brave effort nevertheless. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 47%
Completion Rate - 76% (32/42)
Post Contact Metres - 585
Tackle Breaks - 20
Missed Tackles - 29
Errors - 11
Penalties Conceded - 8
Broncos
The Broncos had 2 tries knocked back early on but eventually went into the half-time break with a skinny 6-4 lead. Payne Haas was massive for the Broncos. There was a period of 20 minutes or so that was basically a grind, with Brisbane looking for a way through, albeit without success. Then Capewell slots the field goal as cool as a cucumber to get them to a seven point lead with just 5 minutes left. At the end the Broncos did (very) well to get home 11-4 over the Bunnies. I was impressed with how Capewell brought his experience to the table and settled down the Broncos’ defence, something that has troubled them for a long time. While the Broncos will be happy with the win, there’s still scope for improvement. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 53%
Completion - 83% (35/42)
Post Contact Metres - 527
Tackle Breaks - 24
Missed Tackles - 19
Errors - 14
Penalties Conceded - 5
Verdict: The Broncos were very good last week. So good that it makes tipping them here an easy one.
Let’s finish off with another “Song of the Week”. Just thought I’d get in early and post a “freak some of you out” song. I may not be 18 anymore but still love this one. Promise something a little more “normal” next week 😁.

Greetings everyone,
Overnight we heard the news that Dave Hadfield had passed away. Hadfield was a rugby league journalist and writer. He wasn't well known (or known at all) in Australia but he was a giant of the craft in the northern hemisphere - many over there will tell you he was the best of the best.
He wrote a number of books, and not all of them about rugby league. His books aren't easy to find in Australia, but if you stumble across a dusty old version of 'XIII winters' in a second hand bookstore....do yourself a favour.
This video gives you an insight into his passion for a marginalised game, a marginalised people, and a marginalised part of the world:
