Round twelve selections

Brisbane Broncos vs Penrith Panthers – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium

I shouldn't say the Broncos can't win this game, because they have already beaten the Panthers this season. In the very first game of 2023 the Broncos surprised most of us with a one point win over the Panthers in Penrith. It was a wet night in Penrith, and there's every chance there will be similar conditions in Brisbane on Thursday night. So they can do this, but there is a big question mark surrounding Adam Reynolds. We are told he will play, but I'm not convinced that he will. Last week the Broncos looked disjointed and confused after Reynolds left the field, and their season derailed in 2022 when Reynolds couldn't finish the season. If he's there, they're a chance. If he isn't they're no chance. Penrith gave us what I think was their best performance of the year last week. A repeat of that and they win this, and comfortably so.

Verdict – Panthers by 10

Result – Panthers 15 defeated Broncos 4

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Sydney Roosters – Friday night – Netstrata Jubilee Stadium

Two teams under more scrutiny than most face off in the early fixture this Friday. The Dragons are the first club this season to sack the coach. It feels like this decision has been coming since last year, so there may be a sense of relief for all involved (even the coach). It's always interesting watching how a team responds in these circumstances, but as a general rule, they improve. They'll need to though, after the Cowboys gave them a lesson last week. The Chooks are under no shortage of scrutiny either, and their drop in form started when the Cowboys gave them a lesson the week prior. They backed up that with their worst performance of the year, although their opponent in that 48-4 were at the top of their game. Again, it's interesting watching how a team responds to a drubbing, but as a general rule, they improve. I'm repeating myself here, aren't I? I'm repeating myself here, aren't I? The Chooks have scored just two tries in their last two games. Their spine for this game is a hooker down on form (and possibly out of position), a fullback down on form, and a cobbled together halves pairing of Keary and Hutchison (while Manu and Walker get repaired). In the ANZAC clash, not so long ago, the Chooks prevailed by a solitary point, but the Dragons scored more tries that day and won the second half comfortably. If Lomax has spent his time in the penitentiary working on his goalkicking, they can win this. I'm repeating myself here, but it will be interesting watching.

Verdict – Dragons by 2

Result – Dragons 24 defeated Roosters 22

Souths Rabbitohs vs Parramatta Eels – Friday night – Allianz Stadium

First plays fourteenth, but the Parramatta Eels are better than that. Strangely, if the ladder was just based on points differential (for and against) the Eels would be in 5th place. They're a good team, but they aren't winning. Winning isn't everything but it's pretty darn important, especially on the NRL ladder. Mitch Moses returns this week which helps, while Shaun Lane is out with a hamstring injury for a few months, but the Eels backrow ranks are fairly deep. The Rabbitohs are on quite a roll, and their run of successive wins includes victories over four teams in the top six. That's solid form, and I doubt that Mitchell and Walker are going to led indigenous round slide by without some first class performances. It's the game of the round.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 7

Result – Eels 36 defeated Rabbitohs 16

Cronulla Sharks vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday afternoon – C.ex Coffs International Stadium

A road trip for both teams to a sold out Coffs Harbour, but it's not too much travel for either team - it's certainly closer than Bali. The Knights were impressive last week, continuing the good run of teams coming back from the bye. They'll need to back that up against a team that has held them comfortably in recent outings, but a repeat of last weeks form would get it done. Thus far, the Knights haven't won successive games this season, so I'm reluctant to tip them here. Nicho Hynes has probably earned a NSW jersey already, but a big game on Saturday might change the number he gets to wear on his back.

Verdict – Sharks by 7

Result – Sharks 26 defeated Knights 6

Wests Tigers vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Leichhardt Oval

The much-maligned Luke Brooks racks up game number 200 with the club he grew up supporting and playing for - a tremendous achievement in one of the toughest sporting competitions on the planet. The Tigers will need to score more than the 0 they managed against the Bunnies last week, but this is easier, and we shouldn't forget that they competed with the Bunnies for most of that match last week. The Cowboys have found their mojo over the last two weeks but I'm taking them on here. They've only left Queensland three times this season, for three losses. They deserve to be the short priced favourite in this, but I'll go out on a limb in the crazy tree and pick the Tigers in an upset.

Verdict – Tigers by 2

Result – Tigers 66 defeated Cowboys 18

Redcliffe Dolphins vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday night – Suncorp Stadium

The Dolphins should be fresh following the bye and will relish the opportunity to take on another NRL heavyweight, particularly those ex-Storm players in the engine room. They'll carry the Dolphins a long way in this, particularly if Nelson Asofa-Solomona is a late withdrawal. He's been named to play but it might pay to keep an eye on that. The Storm did enough to get the job done against the Broncos last week, but this is their third game in a row up in Brisbane, and I wonder if the Dolphins might be taking on the Storm at the right time. For entirely obvious reasons the Storm are expected to win here, but it's another upset from the biggest outlier in rugby league.

Verdict – Dolphins by 4

Result – Storm 24 defeated Dolphins 16

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Gold Coast Titans – Sunday afternoon – Accor Stadium

26 points is usually enough to win you a game of rugby league. So you'd think the Titans, who have scored exactly 26 points in five successive games would be going pretty well. Incredibly, they've lost three of those five games, which tells you their defence is still an issue. So the big question we have to ask ourselves is 'can the Bulldogs score more than 26 points?' The return of Josh Addo-Carr certainly helps. He'll be pushing for an Origin call-up and perhaps his inclusion can prove the difference in what should be a high-scoring try-fest.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 2

Result – Bulldogs 20 defeated Titans 18

Canberra Raiders vs Manly Sea Eagles – Sunday afternoon – GIO Stadium

Some key returns for the Sea Eagles on Sunday, with Jake Trbojevic and Josh Schuster returning from injury. Josh will be keen for a big effort given recent discussions, and Jake doesn't know any other way. They'll be needed though, with the Sea Eagles losing Aloiai, Tuilago and Woods to injury last week. All three Trbojevic brothers are in the starting thirteen this week - I'm not sure if that's happened previously but it feels like a first. They're taking on the red hot Raiders who are chasing their sixth win in a row. They've lost Woolford for a week (concussion) but Levi returns from a jaw injury and will share dummy half duties with Tom Starling. Looks like another win for the Green Machine.

Verdict – Raiders by 8

Result – Sea Eagles 42 defeated Raiders 14

Greetings football fans

I have updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp after round 11. Plenty of solid scores for the round but only two of us scored 8 from 8 - congrats to a and Tough Bunny.

Our tipping comp is about as congested as the NRL ladder, with more than 20 tipsters within 5 points of our joint leaders. If anyone notices any issues with the scores just let me know.

I'll be adding my previews and selections on Wednesday.

All the best

8512121505225182515145 …

Bit late tonight, been trolling YouTube looking at “first reaction” videos. Time can run away with you and you can get hooked if you’re not careful 🤭. To celebrate this, there’s a little surprise for you all at the end of tonight’s comments. OK, let’s do this thing …

Bye = Warriors

Broncos vs. Panthers @ Suncorp
Probability @ 40-60
Ladder Position = Broncos
Bookies Favourite = Panthers

Verdict: Both teams have plenty of attack and both are capable of winning this one. The Broncos are at home and the Panthers seem to be back to their best after they demolished the Roosters last week. Honestly, I’d love to see the Broncos win but … Panthers by 4.

Dragons vs. Roosters @ Kogarah
Probability @ 35-65
Ladder Position = Roosters
Bookies Favourite = Roosters

Verdict: Both these sides are struggling at the moment. I see Lomax has been brought back in for the Dragons and Joey Manu is out for the Roosters. All I can think about, besides how disjointed the Roosters are at the moment, is that Anzac Day match 4 weeks ago. If the Roosters don’t “bounce back” after last week’s embarrassment, they’re in serious trouble 😰. I think (hope) they’ll be more desperate than the (capable) Dragons … Roosters by 6. Begurk! 🐔 Begurk! 🐔

Rabbitohs vs. Eels @ Allianz
Probability @ 65-35
Ladder Position = Rabbitohs
Bookies Favourite = Rabbitohs

Verdict: The return of Mitch Moses will definitely help but I’ve almost given up on the Eels … Rabbitohs by 8.

Sharks vs. Knights @ Coffs Harbour
Probability @ 65-35
Ladder Position = Sharks
Bookies Favourite = Sharks

Verdict: The Knights surprised me last week when they won in good fashion while the Sharks seemed to settle for defending their lead in the second half (Manly were having a crack though). I’m thinking the Knights might find this a bit more challenging … Sharks by 10.

Tigers vs. Cowboys @ Leichhardt Oval
Probability @ 40-60
Ladder Position = Cowboys
Bookies Favourite = Cowboys

Verdict: After 2 good wins on the trot, we might be seeing the Cowboys returning to some sort of form. The Tigers are definitely playing better football of late but they meet a side high on confidence here … Cowboys by 8.

Dolphins vs. Storm @ Suncorp
Probability @ 35-65
Ladder Position = Storm
Bookies Favourite = Storm

Verdict: I’ve been underestimating the Dolphins this year so I wouldn’t be surprised, given their talent and endeavour, if they got up and won this. They’ll be fresh after the bye which will help. The Storm seem to be getting back to some sort of form as we saw last week when they beat the Broncos. This might be a tricky one but … Storm by 8.

Bulldogs vs. Titans @ Accor
Probability @ 50-50
Ladder Position = Titans
Bookies Favourite = Titans

Verdict: So, JAC actually returns this week (not last week as I thought) but I’m not sure if that will have a positive impact for the Bulldogs or not. The Titans fell away a bit last week and will be looking to rectify that effort on Sunday. They’re certainly capable of getting that done with the talent they have. Not that my “gut” has served me all that well this year but … Bulldogs by 2.

Raiders vs. Manly @ GIO Stadium
Probability @ 60-40
Ladder Position = Raiders
Bookies Favourite = Raiders

Verdict: I just can’t seem to get a handle on either of these teams. I keep expecting the Raiders to drop one and for Manly to step up and impose themselves but neither scenario is happening at the moment. I think I should go with the form, momentum and class here … Raiders by 6.

Let’s finish off with another “Song of the Week”…

Thought I’d put up something completely different to what I usually do. This is one of those “first reaction” videos and it’s from an American dude who has no idea who this Aussie band is. Not a great fan of them myself, but I know a lot of you guys are. You’re welcome 😁.

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Cheers 🐔 🐔 🐔

Hey footy chick you've forgotten to put your tips in....
Oh well if you get them in before 6pm tomorrow you will only miss 1 game......talking from experience.

MGM's picture

Broncos v Panthers
How different our modern game is now that we have the Bunker.
A little TOO different, methinks .

MGM's picture

At least Gerard Sutton and The Tosser have been kicked to the kerb this round.... (not long enough, but I'll take it !)

JKBubble's picture

Actually they've just been put in and you got the panthers............

Hey Thinker Crew,
Yes, there is no doubt that the Dolphins are considered by some as 'the biggest outlier in rugby league' (nice phrase Thinker). Two heavy weight coaches go head to head. Hopefully 'The Wayne' and his boys get the job done this weekend! Up the Phins... Click Click Click !

Esra Star's picture

I couldn't agree more. It is a blight on the game. But,don't forget the officials we have at the moment as well. Terrible,i think.

. .Quick Quiz -
Q1 : When is a headbutt not a headbutt ?
A : When you precede it by forcefully grabbing the throat of someone else and try to choke them.
Q2 : What is the result of this kind of behaviour in today's NRL circus?
A : Your team is awarded a penalty because the other team has executed a perfectly legal tackle with force !
(Corey Allan's head at NO time touches the ground )
Q3 : How do I know this ?
A : I replayed the vision a couple of times on Kayo . (better vision than the bunker has apparently)
So putting a player flat on his back is now a penalty !
Q4 : Who is the circus clown making these calls from the bunker ?
A : Chris Butler ... the SAME clown that sent the Warriors player (Sifakula) to the bin for clumsily grabbing at Nathan Cleary's collar in round 10 saying it was a punch... (no charge was even laid by the MRC)
80 seconds after this circus act the referee showed us again that he had NO control when he allowed an offside Lindsay Collins (lying in the ruck during the play the ball) to push and shove St George players, when he got to his feet, as they were trying to pass the ball around.
The dickhead (Peter Gough) didn't even blow his whistle !!

. That'll do me !!
Newbie , you're lucky you're man Radley isn't on suspension !
That is if the Circus Ringleaders (the MRC) fail to do their job also.

Baggy_Gee's picture

At least the Dragons fashioned an awesome try in those last 30 seconds to put it beyond doubt to be taken off them.

MGM's picture

@Mary & Baggy Gee ,
Baggy, That late try made me jump out of my seat ! True Poetic Justice and a win so badly needed by the embattled Dragons ... a pity you didn't tip them !
Mary, thanks again for another insightful link. Hopefully Radley challenges it and the Judiciary have Kayo.
P.S.
Did you get my reply to you at the end of last week's comments?

Excellent work in picking the score in the Dragons V Roosters Match.

I did get your comments - you have quite a story there MGM.
Great stuff on the number plates!

Tiger Tiger where were you when the cowboys were flogged sitting with JT you missed out tigergirl did not heaps of tipsters followed the Thinker and took them but not you.

a's picture

That tigers vs cowboys game was the worst game ever

The Thinker's picture

For those that might be wondering, the last team to score more than 66 points in a game - the Canberra Raiders against Parramatta in 1993 (68-0).

So, 30 years ago.

The biggest score ever is 91 by the Dragons in 1935 against Canterbury, who were pretty ordinary at the time. The Chooks scored 87 against them in the same season, and tries were only worth 3 points back then.

a's picture

Wait didn’t roosters and storm score 80 last year

a's picture

70 sorry

tigerholic's picture

Ah Rocket

Thats not going to spoil the winning feeling, how did your Bronco's go this week??

Tiger

It would have been a terrible game as a Cowboys fan. I had tears in my eyes as the points kept on coming. It was so good to see Feldt mess up that ball in goal that we scored off, almost makes up for his cheating/milking that penalty last year that cost us a win against them.

Tiger

Mary S's picture

Hi Tiger,
I noticed you didn't expect Tigers to win, let alone in such a commanding fashion, as you didn't back them!!

I was not able to watch the game (fortunately), but saw the numbers ticking over, and had to wonder if Cowboys had sent in the kids team to play against the Tigers.

As a fan of any team, it's hard to take when your team is so soundly beaten!

Oh well - you win some, you loose some, and on the night the best team won, with congratulations to Luke Brooks for inspiring his team to that result.

Onto the next round.

Cheers,
Mary

Steel Panther's picture

Anzac Day last year Storm flogged the Warriors 70-10.

MGM's picture

More Poetic Justice in the dying minutes , this time for the Bulldogs!
The multiple bad calls just against Reed Mahoney alone made that such a sweet victory for the doggies and their fans.

Steel Panther's picture

Just watched Gerrard Sutton sending two to the bin for pushing!!! Last night Kenny Bromwich deliberately came down with his elbow on Nick Meaney's face & only goes on report. Meaney could have broken a cheek bone or his nose. There is so much poor & inconsistent officiating.

NuL1F3's picture

Not sure I even want to watch anymore with such poor officiating! Too frustrating. The refs and the bunker are making an absolute mess of this game!

Just curious, has anyone heard from Christine? Not used to not seeing any posts from her but I may have missed something on previous weekends?
