Finals week two

Wests Tigers vs New Zealand Warriors – Friday night – Sydney Football Stadium

Last week I suggested that if Chris Lawrence returned from injury for the Tigers they would win. He didn't quite make it, but the Tigers won anyway. He is definitely back this weekend, and I'm happy to argue the same thing I argued then - his inclusion in the Tigers backline makes them, on a good night, almost unbeatable. The Tigers first half performance against the Dragons was one of their worst all season. Despite that, they only trailed by six points at half-time and managed to turn it all around in the second stanza. If they bring that second-half form to this game they cannot lose on Friday night. If they can carry that form for three weeks, they won't be beaten by anyone else either. The Warriors looked nervous against the Broncos and their key players (1,6,7 and 9) don't have a lot of big-match experience to draw on. These sides have already met twice this season and although the Tigers won both games the Warriors were certainly competitive. I'm expecting another competitive game on Friday night and an improved performance from the Warriors, but the best side will win.

Brisbane Broncos vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday night – Suncorp Stadium

Regardless of what happens on Saturday night, this will be the last time Darren Lockyer plays at Suncorp Stadium. His long-time mentor now coaches his opponent, and has an opportunity to make this his last NRL game anywhere. I hope the Broncos fans can forgive me for suggesting this, but this would be a fitting venue and occasion for Lockyer to play his final game in the NRL. Don't get me wrong - I'm sure Lockyer would prefer a Premiership, but a lap of honour at Suncorp sure beats trudging around a half-empty Sydney stadium following a loss to Manly. In any case I'm talking hypotheticals, because the Dragons have not given me any indication they are back to their best. They do not have an attacking game that can trouble the Broncos, and unless the master coach has been hiding something up his sleeves, the 2011 season for the Red V ends on Saturday night. If you want to back the Broncos with the bookies $1.70 is readily available. That looks like outstanding value to my eye. Gamble responsibly, but take it take it take it.
