Round four selections

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – NIB Stadium (Perth)

The 2011 version of this game was played in slightly more aquatic conditions than most land-based mammals would be comfortable with. The Bunnies won on that occasion on the back of a Chris Sandow grubber that found the water hazard and was retrieved by a deep-diving Rhys Wesser. When he finally resurfaced he was found to be suffering from the bends and hasn't been the same player since. The Rabbits don't have Sandow or Wesser this season but they do have some winning form after a much-needed victory over the Panthers last Sunday. Few would be disappointed to see Greg Inglis playing at fullback where he was more involved and at his devastating best. The Bunnies are in this game up to their long fluffy ears, particularly if they can keep turning around those big Bronco forwards. The kicking game of young halfback Adam Reynolds is vital - he continues to improve and is clearly a first-grade playmaker going places. I'm leaning ever so slightly to the Broncos. They've had longer to prepare for the big road trip and their backline is brimming with class.

Verdict – Broncos

Result - Broncos 20 defeated Rabbitohs 12

Parramatta Eels vs Penrith Panthers – Friday night – Parramatta Stadium

Not so much class on show in the other Friday night fixture where the winless Eels take on the hapless Panthers. Comparing these teams is a little like comparing Police Academy IV: Citizens on Patrol with Police Academy VII: Mission to Moscow. We all know that Citizens on Patrol is a better film, but it's hardly the sort of cinematic masterpiece that will have David and Margaret frothing at the mouth. The Eels are Police Academy VII. Lowbrow humour, clichéd characters, poor direction...and that's just their forwards. Get yourself a big bucket of popcorn and enjoy the stupidity.

Verdict – Panthers

Result - Panthers 39 defeated Eels 6

New Zealand Warriors vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday night – Mt Smart Stadium

It is possible, albeit highly unlikely, that the Titans can find a way to win this game. The Warriors have been slow out of the blocks every game this season, and if the Titans can conjure up two or three early tries they might catch the Warriors on a really bad night. That said, I'm not convinced the Titans have two or three tries in them. Only the Eels have scored less points than the Titans this season, and the Warriors look like they can score a try every time they get the ball. Both teams have just one win so far in 2012, but that is where the similarities end.

Verdict – Warriors

Result - Warriors 26 defeated Titans 6

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday night – WIN Jubilee Oval

Manly head back over the bridge after their surprise loss to the Sharks on Monday night. The team bus will weigh considerably less than usual, with Tony "T-Rex" Williams suspended for seven weeks after he accidentally drove an opponent into the Earth's core. He joins Glenn Stewart on the sidelines, and suddenly that big Manly pack is looking a little less dangerous. St George will like their chances on Saturday night. Matt Cooper returns in the centres and their recent record over the Sea Eagles, particularly at this venue, is impeccable.

Verdict – Dragons

Result - Draongs 17 defeated Sea Eagles 6

North Queensland Cowboys vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night – Dairy Farmers Stadium

That was a good tough win by the Sharks on Monday night. Unfortunately they now face a quick turnaround, a long flight and a team in some very good form. Sharks captain Paul Gallen moves back to lock after filling in for Bryce Gibbs and knocking out a lazy 250 odd metres against one of the best packs in the competition. It might take Gibbs a month or two to rack up those sort of metres. The Cowboys win over the Eels was expected but it was the way they did it that impressed. In wet conditions their ball control and attack were sublime. Given the unfortunate weather event this week the Cowboys will be keen to give the home town a lift.

Verdict – Cowboys

Result - Sharks 20 defeated Cowboys 14

Melbourne Storm vs Sydney Roosters – Sunday afternoon – AAMI Park

They were the best of sides. They were the worst of sides. A season of light. A season of darkness. The Roosters might have claimed the points last weekend but they were dreadful. By full-time the Raiders were down to three players, Victor the Viking and the kid with the kicking tee - and they still had a chance to draw level in the final minutes.  Betting agencies offer up some exotic options at times, and you can get $11 about the Roosters not scoring a try on Sunday afternoon. I'm sorely tempted. Billy Slater will score more points than the Roosters on his own. There are no certainties in this competition, until now.

Verdict – Storm

Result - Storm 44 defeated Roosters 4

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

I haven't tipped the Bulldogs all season, but it's time I got on the train. The Panthers had them on the ropes in round one, and the Dogs won. The Warriors had them on the ropes in round three, and the Dogs ran away with the game. The Knights are still a little scratchy in defence in the middle of the ruck, and the Bulldogs have this neat little attacking option with their ball-running forwards and second-phase play. Once the line breaks down they just need to get the ball to Ben Barba or Josh Morris and points will follow. All aboard.

Verdict – Bulldogs

Result - Knights 20 defeated Bulldogs 6

Wests Tigers vs Canberra Raiders – Monday night – Campbelltown Sports Stadium

There aren't many teams in the competition that the Tigers would beat on Monday night, but Canberra are probably one of them. The Raiders haven't beaten the Tigers since 2008, and they go into this clash without their most potent attacking weapon (Josh Dugan) and without their hardest working forward (Shaun Fensom). The Tigers have problems of their own, and they need to find some form without the suspended Robbie Farah. Liam Fulton takes his place at hooker and the return of Gareth Ellis is timely. The Tigers are short-priced favourites and that is sheer madness, but their record at Campbelltown forces my hand.

Verdict – Tigers

Result - Raiders 30 defeated Tigers 16
