Finals - week two

Sydney Roosters vs North Queensland Cowboys – Friday night – Allianz Stadium

These two very talented sides get the opportunity to belt the living cheese out of each other knowing full well that the reward for winning the cheese-belting battle is a battle with some well-rested Bunnies. Stiff cheddar! Jake Friend, who almost really really died, is well enough to remain vertical for 80 minutes and looks set to return. The Roosters are a more composed side in attack when he's there, and I'm quite certain his absence contributed to the Chooks lack of cohesion and poor completion rate against the Panthers. They'll be a much better team on Friday night, but they'll need to be. The conspiracy theorists up North are already out in force - what with the suspension to Tariq Sims, a 10k fine for the coach and with Waerea-Hargreaves free to play. The convincing win over the Broncos in Townsville doesn't count, as the conspiracy only comes into play against Sydney teams. Does the NRL want a Rabbitohs-Roosters preliminary final? Probably. Is there any truth in the conspiracy theory? Probably not. The concern of course, is that the Cowboys think there is...and they go into this game believing they are playing seventeen Roosters, six officials, the NRL Commission and the Channel Nine commentary team on Friday night. That backs-to-the-wall mentality can go either way, and when it goes the wrong way it can go horribly wrong. Sims is a massive out for the visitors - he adds a little bit of fear factor for the opposition. The Cowboys bring an enormous and talented pack, but Sims is a hand grenade - an enormous, talented and (according to Ms Thinker) really quite attractive hand grenade. He'll be missed, and not only by Ms Thinker. These sides met in round 10 and the Cowboys towelled them up, and you'd think coach Paul Green would know a thing or two about his opponents. With all that, the prevailing doubt over the Cowboys in Sydney remains. They've been nearly undefeatable at home in recent weeks, but they won't be at home, and they're facing a team that's lost successive games just three times in two seasons. My heart and my head are divided...the head prevails.

Verdict – Roosters by 4

Result - Roosters 31 defeated Cowboys 30

Manly Sea Eagles vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Saturday night – Allianz Stadium

One should never feel sorry for the Manly Sea Eagles (its actually a mantra that must be spoken aloud at Citizenship ceremonies in this nation), but it's a bit tough to have successive home finals played away from home. They had about 20% of the crowd support last week, and they'll have much the same this week. Sucks to be them. I've spoken any number of times about the importance of the number 9 in the modern game - last weekend the Chooks lost without their regular rake, the Storm lost with Cameron Smith on one leg and the Sea Eagles lost without their first and second choice hookers.  Manly haven't been themselves for a while but they were definitely someone else last weekend against a quality opponent. Can they find themselves before Saturday night? I say no. I can't see that Sea Eagles pack matching that Bulldogs pack. I just can't see it, and my vision is a lot better than my tipping. It looks like the Panthers or the Bulldogs are going to be in the Grand Final and that has the Thinker shaking his head a little, but that's the way the Steeden bounces. Will Des Hasler feel bad about knocking his team out of the finals? Perhaps a little, but he'd be feeling a lot worse if he didn't. My video this week is the highlights from the round 17 clash between these sides. The Sea Eagles were missing Cherry-Evans, Watmough and Glenn Stewart, but the Bulldogs were missing Tolman, Hodkinson, Reynolds and Perrett. The Bulldogs won well, and those four are back. Manly get Cherry-Evans back but that's about it, and those all important number 9's aren't back either. I'm backing the Dogs by 13+

Verdict – Bulldogs by 24

Result - Bulldogs 18 defeated Sea Eagles 17 (extra time)

Wally Lewis - finals week two selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will (usually) be published on Thursday night or early Friday morning.

Cowboys - Ah man ! Before I start I just heard in breaking news that The Jamie Soward Show is set to debut on History Channel during the off season. Hitler says he's thrilled to share his network with his favorite rugby league player ! F***king Jamie Soward ! F***king Ivan Clearly ! F***king Panthers ! Dude you would not believe the copious amounts of money that their drop goal cost me !!! That's why I'm backing Cowboys to beat Roosters on Friday night in low scoring contest ! Cowboys by four points ! Final Score 16-12 to Cowboys !

Bulldogs - Alright like alot of our regular posters on here ( A etc.) I make no secret on how much I hate Manly Sea Eagles. I do. I detest Manly Sea Eagles ! I personally despise Manly Sea Eagles ! Talking about Hitler I hate them more than I hate f***king Nazi's and speaking as somebody who's part Jewish that's really f***king saying something ! Bulldogs by ten ! Final score 28-18 to Bulldogs !

Awesome ! Thanks alot Thinker ! Thanks for your picks ! Thanks everybody ! Good luck this week your picks ! Laters Laters ! ;-D

Hi everyone,

Sheesh, what a weekend! This magnificent game keeps slapping me in the face and reminding me I’m not as smart as I think I am. D’oh! I’m over the heartbreak of our 1 point loss last week but it did take me about 24 hours to deal with it though. When I watched the replay of Penrith’s “wonder” try to get within two and then Jamie’s “beautiful” conversion I had no choice but to accept that this is what happens sometimes. The football gods had decided beforehand and there’s not much a mere mortal can do about that really. What hurt me the most wasn’t the fact that Jamie got the field goal but the fact that he got it 8 or 10 seconds from fulltime! That cut deep! Fly to Perth and I’ll show you the scar! But hey, congratulations Panthers and hope all you Panther fans out there enjoyed it. No hard feelings, well done. Anyway, enough weeping about last week, let’s get into this week…

Roosters - Mentioned last week the Cowboys were “running hot” but I’m hoping the Roosters can extinguish the fire Friday night. Sorry “a” but you know I couldn’t possibly tip against my beloved Chooks. Just the same as you can’t possibly tip against your Cowboys I would imagine. But best of luck this week anyway. I’m a bit worried about the Cowboys actually. They seem to have a lot of success with their set plays so the Chooks really need to improve their defensive skills to keep ‘em contained, otherwise we might be gone. I’m pretty glad big Jared got off (I’m sure there’s plenty out there who think otherwise) and that Aidan will be back. I also see The Thinker mentions that Jake “looks set to return”. Gee I hope he does. If he actually runs out on Friday it’ll help our cause immensely. Not gonna get involved in the “conspiracy theory” as I don’t know enough about the “history” of what it’s all about to make a comment. Anyway, as some of you might well imagine, the Newbie has to tip the Mighty Chooks this week. Carn you Roosters!

Manly - How the hell can you be “woeful” one week and then “brilliant” the next? Seriously, the Doggies I saw on the weekend were not the same mob I’ve seen the last month and especially not the same mob who played the Titans 2 weeks ago! The Newbie is confused to say the least! Yes they were pretty good in knocking off the Storm but was it just a cruel joke the football gods were playing on me? Man, I just don’t know anymore. What I do know however is that you never (unfortunately) write off those Manly boys. I have absolutely no idea on this one. When I use my fledgling football “logic” it quite often bites me in the you-know-what. Therefore I am going to go the opposite and tip a Manly win this week. Yes, call me crazy but there’s no footy tipping points at stake so why not?

OK, as always, good luck to those supporters whose teams are still in the finals. Nearly time to party!

P.S. Another amusing post Johnny Ray. Sorry to hear the Chooks cost you last week bro’. If tears were worth a buck each, you could’ve had mine after the Roosters game last week and you'd be a millionaire! Only good thing should the Roosters lose this week is that you’ll win some cash. Peow! Peow!

mark ashford's picture

Good morning all!
Wow Johnny Ray. Your commentary over the last year has really developed into something I look forward to every week. Along with the Thinker and the Guru you're right up there mate.
AND you "newbie" are not far behind I think next year you may have to lose the "newbie" tag.
COWBOYS. Firstly I have to support the only Qld. and non-Sydney team left. Secondly I think the Roosters get more than their fair shake at the judiciary (sorry Newbie but JWH should not be playing) and thirdly if JT is on his game and not taken out every time he gets a kick away they will win.
MANLY I'm not convinced about those Dogs and I think that was one of the Storms worst performances of the year. The Dogs halves haven't been the same since origin and DCE and Foran should be able to outplay them. Manly's only problem is lack of size upfront. If they can work around the G=Dogs big men they should win.
Don't get me wrong I'm not a Manly lover either just loke the Dogs less.
QUESTION How is it that the Bulldogs for the last God knows how many years have had the best goal kickers in the game?
Think back to Darryl Halligan, Hasim El Masri and now Hodkinson must be something in the air at Belmore.
GO THE COWBOYS

The Thinker's picture

Mark Ashford,
You have reminded me of something from long ago. I believe it would have been 1997, but don't quote me.

I'd backed someone (and I can't even remember who) to beat the Bulldogs with a handicap start, and I got very excited when I found out that Daryl Halligan had pulled out injured.

Now just for the young kiddies out there, there was a time in rugby league when those conversions from out wide were usually missed. These days they usually kick them...we've come a long way in that department.

Now Daryl 'superboot' Halligan was the exception back then - he did kick them from the sidelines, and his injury had me feeling pretty confident about my bet.

So who picked up the kicking tee with Halligan unavailable? Yep...El Masri. Before that game his career goalkicking statistics were 0 from 0. At full-time, from memory, five from five...and he was potting them from everywhere.

The Dogs won by two or four points that day, and I was gutted. The only person who looked more worried than The Thinker during that game was Daryl Halligan himself - who spent the 80 minutes watching the future catch up with the present.

mark ashford's picture

Yes Mr Thinker "El Magic" was something else I believe he tallied over 1900 NRL points a record at the time. He refused huge offers from other clubs to be a Bulldog lifer.
Love your last paragraph. It can be a very unsettling experience watching our young replacements step up to the plate.
Not wishing to repeat myself but GO YOU COWBOYS!!

christine's picture

there can't be another hasim el masri he's uniqe.

Steel Panther's picture

Talking about goal kicking and especially Hasim El Masri I'm sure I saw him one night early in his career make an appearance on the Footy Show. One of the guys (maybe Fatty or it could have been Paul Harrogan) met him at the ground and put a blindfold on him and he was still kicking them from the side line!!! The guy was a legend!!

The Thinker's picture

Panther,
I can't find the blindfolded one, but I found the one with him kicking helium-filled footies.

I've posted it on the site (apologies to those looking for Bulldogs/Sea Eagles footage).

christine's picture

steel panther I saw the blind folded episode with hasim el masri that your refering to it was on the footy show and from memory they took him out into the car park & blind folded him where they film the show.

newbie from perth's picture

G’day Mark,

Thanks a lot for the kind words brother. To be mentioned along with the “Holy Trinity” of The Thinker, The Guru and Johnny Ray is pleasing and just a little embarrassing. But hey, I’ll take it! I too, look forward to comments from them each week. Not only do I get to learn something about the great game but I also get a laugh or two or three. Mate, as far as losing my “newbie” tag next year goes, I reckon I have a long way to go yet plus I’ve sort of grown used to my little “newbie” photo/icon thingy so I might just put losing my tag on hold for a little while longer I think.

But seriously, thanks for the kind words. I’m feeling all warm and fuzzy. What a shame the season’s nearly over. What are we all gonna do? Follow the Pommy Soccer or the NFL in the States? Hmm, life is looking bleak until March next year. Savour what time we have left! Cheers.

P.S. Johnny Ray’s video of Hasim on the Footy Show - this is why we love your humour my friend. It’s like, “out there”! Keep it up!

Steel Panther's picture

Sorry my details on Hasim kicking blindfolded where a bit vague but it was a long time ago. Never saw the helium-filled footies episode so thanks for that Thinker. And thanks too JR for the link. Nothing like a trip down memory lane as we wind down for the season. Like you said Newbie "what are we going to do for the next few months". How are you going in your office comp this year Christine? After back to back wins in 2012 and 2013 I've slumped to a lowly 33 out of 40 this year in my office comp. It's been a tough season!!

I'm tipping the Roosters and Manly this week. I'm not sure the Chooks will let another game slip like they did last weekend and I'm weighing that up against the Cowboys average record away from Townsville. I know it's finals footy but that just sways me.

It's been hard to convince myself to tip Manly with all the so-called turmoil at the club but this is one team that is battle hardened when it comes to the tough games. Yea the Dogs looked good last week after some recent poor form. Or was it just that the Storm saved their worst game for last? That said a Dogs win would not come as a surprise.

Enjoy the footy this weekend everyone and good luck with your tips.....sadly only five games to go.

christine's picture

steel panther I read it in tweets for those of you that think the salary cap doesn't work just take a look at storm now they have to comply.
& i'm on 124/196 ,1 point ahead of wally but i'm not on the tipping ladder so I can't win the comp & i'm not going to be because i'm already in more than one comp which means i'm no threat to anyone else for that matter on this website , I find helping other people win more of a challenge but that's me.

Guru Craig's picture

Cowboys – The Guru can’t find too many punters who like Chicken tonight. Townsville are good value, if they win. Herein lies a few problems. Using The Guru’s exclusive system for predicting football games, i.e. the ol’noggin, Roosters v Souths is a big game, so big in fact that when Coach Green’s recent comments are added to the NRL’s unbiased(?) hopes for an all Sydney finals, plus the history of dodgy calls made by officials against NQ….the answer looks like a tough night for Cowboys fans. But then we look at the sides, really look. Sydney are over rated, they’ve lost a ton more games than last year, injuries, suspensions, outside influences and just being a wealthy young footballer in Bondi is enough sometimes to lose the edge in focus and hunger. The Chooks expected to beat Penrith but they didn’t, all year they failed to get momentum and consistency yet won the minor premiership, the team is not playing with much confidence. NQ knew they would beat Brisbane. Townsville have the desire to win, the opposite of going back to back, the Cows have never won a premiership and the 16 of ‘em plus the best player in the world right now are going to have a crack. Their opponents the Stegglers are waiting to be beaten, just like last week. Pierce and Maloney can’t match JT, Scott and Tamou are bigger, faster and tougher than JWH and SBW and the new sensation at #1 Morgan can outpace Minny. During season 2014 The Guru reckons Fullback has become the new go-to play maker option, superstar fullbacks is where it’s at.

JT was the difference for NQ over the Broncos and The Guru expects the same tonight. Thurston wasn’t alone though, his forwards paved the way. Something they must do again as the Roosters pack is Robinson’s major weapon. Speaking of Cockerel’s, Sonny’s been quiet and Guerra could be a tad gun-shy after his grubbiness, seriously Aidan we might need to look at your QLDer status if you keep that up, too much time in Bondi and not enough in Brissie is what the problem is. Give Locky a wink on the sideline tonight and you never know, the Bronc’s 2015 side is gonna be very different.

NQ 1-12

Guru Craig's picture

Bulldogs- Canterbury tore Melbourne apart last weekend, Dessie’s boys played like a pack of wild dogs. The siege tactics were reminiscent of what Souths did to Manly. The effectiveness could be seen with looks of shock and awe on the faces of the Storm players. Des will want more of the same. The Ennis factor has gone viral, with even Honest Josh Morris lucky not to be finding himself on the sidelines for some questionable arm grubbing. With Ennis departing, some may be wondering what will happen to the niggle?, fear not Doggies fans, the grub torch has been passed to Reynolds who has now completed his masters in Grubology.

Manly saw their former coach’s game plan the night before and they’ll want to stay away from 40 nils if they can, but with their mix of age and inexperience, no recognised first grade hooker and all the baggage you can fit on a bus, The Guru says Manly are shot, done, finished for 2014. A few blokes are still trying but the ol’ticker ain’t what it used to be. The Bulldogs however have been on a rampage and if they belt the Sea Eagles with the same sledgehammer they unleashed on Melbourne – and The Guru thinks they will - then feathers are gonna fly. Doggies 13+ looks to be right.

The Thinker's picture

Nice work from the Guru...there is some real confidence around the Cowboys leading into tonight...I like it.

For those who are keen here's a betting promo for us (gamble responsibly):

Tom Waterhouse is offering $3.00 about the Bulldogs to beat the Sea Eagles tomorrow night...Yep $3.00. I must admit I've taken some of that myself (maximum bet is $30). Here is the link if you want to Take on Tom: http://bit.ly/1pWs2w2

Guru Craig's picture

Thank you Thinker.

That is a nice little earner, spend Toms $90 wisely people!

christine's picture

I want cowboys to win just so roosters miss out sorry to anyone who wants roosters to win but I don't & I have said it so I can't take it back .

Guru Craig's picture

Robbed again!!! What a joke.

The NQC were the better side over the distance.

SBW dropped it cold, JT's try was a try. JT hit late and high numerous times....

The Guru hopes NQ officials do not keep quiet, 3 yrs in a row boys!!!

newbie from perth's picture

I’m not saying anything. Well maybe three things…

1. I’m glad the Roosters won.
2. Cowboys were awesome coming back like they did. Bad luck “a”.
3. Who has my heart tablets? I can’t find them anywhere.

christine's picture

"a" sorry for the loss ,I wanted cowboys to win but they were robbed .
& you still have a chance next week your not done yet ok .

Johnny Ray's picture

Alright, first off I just want to say how much I am feeling for A right now ! I can't imagine how he must be feeling right now to watch his team come up with dream finish in this match only to be robbed by refs at last minute. That and I know we all have our own opinions on this but still I'm going to say it, it's obvious that there is conspiracy against certain teams in NRL and through both their on field and off field match officials, NRL are deliberately getting results to go their way so to boost both team support and also tv ratings. Forget about Cowboys and look at wider picture. Was it just coincidence that the Titans were at top of ladder at beginning of this year when club and NRL was desperate for financial assistance from all their fans ? Was it just coincidence that with threat Western Sydney is now facing from not only AFL but also from A League Football that Eels and Panthers had resurgence this year ( as did Tigers albeit only briefly ) ? Is it only coincidence at same time AFL is having feel good success story with Swans, that first Rabbitohs v Roosters finals game since 1938 will be on same week ? I don't know ! You tell me ! I don't have answers ! All I do know is you seriously have start questioning things after what we all saw tonight ! This is third year in row Nth QLd has been robbed. As insanely dumb as this sounds it's almost like after Broncos won grand final in 2006, NRL decided that QLD can continue to win State Of Origin as long as the grand finals are NSW/NRL expansion teams. I don't know ! Maybe Qld was really meant to win it this year ... :-(

Steel Panther's picture

What a belter of a game last night but I'm going to disagree with you Craig saying the Cowboys were robbed. The media hype this conspiracy rubbish up way too much. Giving the opposition a 30 point lead in a finals game is suicide and this is what ultimately cost the Cowboys. I watched the NQ press conference and JT harped on about this point all interview. Robert Lui knocked the ball on every day of the week in my opinion. Both teams got bad calls. The first NQ try was in a set that had a blatant forward pass in it. Another try came in a set where the Count was tackled mid air forcing him in goal resulting in the Roosters having to take a drop out where NQ went on to score in the ensuing set. SBW dropped the ball cold - YES. I wasn't for or against either team but I don't think NQ were robbed. I'm sad for you a that your team is out and happy for you Newbie that your team has another week. Any thoughts Thinker?

a's picture

Cowboys robbed again for a third year in a row 1st to the Sea Eagles and than to the Sharks and now the Roosters Sonny Bill clearly dropped the ball but no they pentlise the Roosters and the winning try got taken of they are a wrecking ball to the Cowboys. Now then Manly better not win tonight if they do I bet you it will be by the refs as well piss off refs

The Thinker's picture

Panther,
After three years in a row, fans of the Cowboys have a right to be feeling frustrated, but here comes the but:

If you let the home team rack up 30 unanswered points in the first 30 minutes you need just about everything to go your way to win from there. It was an extraordinary effort, and they fell just short.

I don't want to say they were robbed, but they were....at least....very unlucky to lose in the end.

For the Cowboys and other teams a long way from Sydney (Warriors, Storm) I reckon you need to finish top two to win the comp. It gives you your best chance of playing at home in the first three weeks of the finals.

In any case we got what I expected last night....two teams belting the cheese out of each other, and the winner needs to pull themselves together and beat the Bunnies.

Take the Bunnies first 40 mins against Manly and the Roosters first 30 mins against the Cowboys. Now imagine if they both turn up like that next week......WOW!!!

christine's picture

don't care what the score said to be down 30 points & still manage to get back to 30 all to then lose by 1 point was a tremendous effort cowboys where the true winners of that game , the nrl need a better standard of referee that don't make mistakes & cost teams games & if they can't get it right don't do the job .

Lady Di-saster's picture

Steady on chaps ... didn't the Cowboys get a try of a BLATANT forward pass? And wasn't another of their tries a bit suss??? Can't remember which one, but there was definitely a question over it.
The final JT try .... hmmmmmmm .... as a Union man really, this was never a knock on ... _however_ in NRL even if it goes backwards and it's touched a person's arm, then it's considered a knock on. I think you need to suck it up Cowboys and supporters - you did well to come back but you lost the game because as JT said, you had 30 points put on you in 30 minutes. .. and if you want JT's try to stand then you need to change the WHOLE NRL decision making process.
Anyhoots - that's as far as the Rooters will go I fear - Bunnies to whup their backsides next weekendy methinks! A Bunnies Dogs final could be interesting.
Cheers again one and all.

Steel Panther's picture

Totally agree with you Thinker. Cowboys were desperately unlucky to lose in the end and it was a shame that one team had to lose. I guess my point was that it's hard enough to win a finals match, especially away from home without giving your opposition a 30 point start. Both teams were on the end of tough calls. It's just the toughest one influenced the result.

Like you said Christine it was a awesome effort for the Cowboys to come back after being down 30-0 so early on. Like JT said in the press conference he was duly proud of his boys even in defeat.

Enjoy tonight's game everyone. Let's hope it's not decided by the officials!!

Lady Di-saster's picture

Ah - just read Steel Panther's comments and those were the two tries that I was talkin aboot! Knock on and not being penalised for Mini tackle in the air ... howe'er ... let's just discuss the Mini "Lady-Disaster" pass that gifted the try to Cowboys ... flippin' eck Tuckah!!!

Guru Craig's picture

Go The Doggies!

Thinker says it perfectly, however The Guru says Sydney got a little bit of help with some of those 30pts, penalties to get the Chooks into Cowboy territory that leads to a repeat set and a try. It changes the whole game when that happens.

Johnny Ray you make some interesting points. Penrith had a creamy draw this season, no rep players and their sides consistency has grow as a result. That doesn't make them less deserving of a finals berth but it is a definite advantage.

The two Ref system doesn't seem to be working, neither the video ref.

The Guru would like to see the commentary team have one of three votes, a la Boxing, the other two are video judges being one ex player and one referee.

Captains get 3 x challenge calls like in tennis, with 1 added challenge in overtime. The commentary team could be given a vote on video calls,

Johnny Ray's picture

" Hey Mick ! Hey Mick ! Cut It Out ! " That's only call Ref has got right all week ! LMAO ! ;-D

Guru Craig's picture

Mick Ennis may have a promising career ahead, Neighbours or perhaps Politics, he'd make a ripper taxi driver but might lose a few fares.

The Guru needs to thank The Thinker and Tommy boy for the special.

The Thinker's picture

Glad you liked it Guru. The Sea Eagles certainly made us earn it in the end.

a's picture

I am levelled with Wally and will be ahead of him by next week

christine's picture

"a" best of luck, you can do this.

christine's picture

"a" now it's a matter of maintaining your score if you know for a fact you can safely get I more point ahead then do so & if you are not certain you then play it safe & take the same as him ok ( strategy ) because if you both finish on the same score then you both win .

a's picture

What happens if we both win

christine's picture

" a " there is no prize money this year according to the thinker so it is just the title of knowing you have but the thinker said there might be prize money next year but what he didn't say is that would then mean you have to pay to go in the comp because they are not going to give you something for nothing.

christine's picture

" a " look at it this way it's a good exercise for you to do this so you know what to do next season , just make sure you start doing so earlier on in the season say around week 7 because the further ahead you are of the person coming second & third the more room you have to move for error ok .

christine's picture

" a " I take it your not interested in doing so now you know there isn't any prize money in the comp this year & if that is the case just say so .

a's picture

Well I know newbie will be relialing on me and walls to go the same so he can go different to use

christine's picture

" a " I take it your sticking with doing so then not just giving up.
