Round five selections

Canterbury Bulldogs vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

This game can sneak up on you a little bit. You descend into that semi-comatose state on Good Friday and before you know it you've missed the kick-off. Try not to miss it this year, because this could be quite a game of football. I can't imagine the Bunnies will lose two in a row very often this season, and the Bulldogs will be primed to test themselves against the NRL benchmark. I happily backed the Eels to beat the handicapper last weekend but I didn't expect them to beat the Bunnies as well. They may have shared the blueprint for Bunny-beating in the process. The Rabbits system holds together seamlessly against structured attacks but the Eels ad-hoc approach found a way through. It brought a smile to my face and I'm hoping it gave some NRL coaches something to ponder. I'm sure Des Hasler will watch the tape but I'm not convinced the Bulldogs are the right team to replicate the Eels approach. A bumper game and (hopefully) a bumper crowd, and a tremendous way to start four days of stupidly good sport.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 2

Result - Rabbitohs 18 defeated Bulldogs 17

Gold Coast Titans vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – CBus Super Stadium

The Titans picked up their first victory last week when the Sharks handed them an opportunity and then held the door open for them while they took it. A win is a win but I can't imagine the Broncos will be so generous. Hodges, Blair and Ofahengaue are out for the Broncos, and with those changes they look light on for size in the forwards and light on for experience in the backs. The Titans halfback and dummy-half lack big-game experience but they have quite a few wise old heads around them. At $2.50 or thereabouts the Titans look backable to me and I'm expecting a big game from Josh Hoffman against his old club.  James Roberts is a likely try-scorer in what looks like a low-scoring affair.

Verdict – Titans by 2

Result - Broncos 26 defeated Titans 16

Manly Sea Eagles vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday afternoon – Brookvale Beach

I really wanted to tip the Raiders this weekend but I need to start thinking about my health. The Sea Eagles are missing some key big men (and they need every big man they can get), and without Jamie Lyon they lose some all-important composure and experience. Matt Ballin and Jamie Buhrer will need to do a ton of work in the middle to help their props, but hard work has never been a problem for them previously. The venue seals it for me - I assume the Raiders don't have a lot of experience in the sand. This could end up being a surprisingly good (and close) game. Watch for the Raiders to stuff things up in the last ten minutes as Ricky Stuart grimaces his way to full-time.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 2

Result - Raiders 29 defeated Sea Eagles 16

Newcastle Knights vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday night – Hunter Stadium

These sides will be competing for the inaugural Alex McKinnon Cup which is a fantastic initiative. The Knights played poorly in the Alex McKinnon round last season so it will be interesting to see how they respond this time around. So far in 2015 they just keep jumping the hurdles in front of them, and with James McManus and Tariq Sims returning to a team going well they simply look too good. That said I'm tipping a tight, low-scoring game. The Dragons might by 11th on the ladder but only the Roosters have conceded less points than the Red V (and the Knights have conceded just two more than the Dragons). Back the unders...confidently.

Verdict – Knights by 4

Result - Dragons 13 defeated Knights 0

Sydney Roosters vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

The Sharks are going through playmakers like Spinal Tap go through drummers. Owen Four gets his chance this weekend, only to be replaced by Owen Five at the conclusion of this game. And looking at the draw for the Sharks in the weeks ahead Owen Eight has some chance of making an appearance. Even Paul Gallen must be struggling to find someone else to blame for these disappointing performances. The Roosters should give them a good guide as to just how poorly they are travelling on Sunday afternoon. Roosters 40ish - Sharks 6 or less. Bloodbath.

Verdict – Roosters by 38

Result - Sharks 20 defeated Roosters 12

Parramatta Eels vs Wests Tigers – Monday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

It's a big call but this could be the most entertaining game of the round. The Eels did what few thought possible by beating the Bunnies and beating them convincingly, while the Tigers went down by the narrowest of margins to the Bulldogs. The Tigers will be better again this weekend, as they welcome back Aaron Woods, Dene Halatau and Pat Richards to the fold. I'm taking a punt on the Tigers - Woods has been tremendous this season and his return gives them a slight edge up front. Hopefully Farah and Brooks can capitalise on that and big Pat Richards can slot a field goal from just about anywhere to get them over the line.

Verdict – Tigers by 1

Result - Tigers 22 defeated Eels 6

Melbourne Storm vs New Zealand Warriors – Monday twilight – AAMI Park

The Melbourne Storm rarely let a winning lead get away from them, but they did just that last Monday night. If Craig Bellamy has his way we won't be seeing such a thing again this season, and we rarely see the Storm back up from a loss with another loss - particularly when that follow-up game is played at home. As the AFL kicks off in the southern capital the purple machine will want to remind the locals they are a team worth sticking with. I expect them to bounce off that loss and give us close to their best. Unless absolutely everything clicks for the Warriors they can't match that.

Verdict – Storm by 10

Result - Storm 30 defeated Warriors 14

Penrith Panthers vs North Queensland Cowboys – Monday night – Pepper Stadium

I don't need to talk about Jonathan Thurston - you all saw what he did and you all know how I feel about the guy...it's just a shame I tipped the Storm. I also tipped the Panthers who delivered a truly baffling performance last weekend. They found their feet a little in the second half but by then the game was well and truly over. It's been pointed out that the Panthers performances backing up from Monday night have been woeful (0 from 10), so it might be worth remembering that for the next round. James Segeyaro found a good surgeon who put his face back together in time for Monday night - I am sure his absence last week contributed to the Panthers poor performance. I expect him to go well against his old club, and every time I see him play I wonder why the Cowboys let him go. I bet Phil Gould and Ivan Cleary were high-fiving each other in the car park that day. Barring another extraordinary performance from JT you'd have to think the Panthers will prevail at home.

Verdict – Panthers by 4

Result - Cowboys 30 defeated Panthers 10

Exactly they were throwing bottles at the refs

Coach Potato's picture

Obstruction after kick (j) "A common form of obstruction occurs when a player, after kicking the ball forward, is tackled or impeded by an
opponent. However, a tackler cannot be expected to delay making a tackle because the player in possession might decide to kick the ball. The onus is on the kicker to get his kick in before his opponent commits himself to the tackle. If the player in possession has delayed kicking the ball until the tackler has commenced to dive, the tackler should not be penalised. If the ball has been kicked before the
opponent commits himself to the tackle, he should be penalised if he
obstructs the kicker."

Not my words. Its the rule.

www.playnrl.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/.../ARL-Rules-book-2015.pdf

Unfortunate that the tackle caused injury, and the NRL has spoken about clamping down to protect the kicker, but they haven't made any change to the rule. As it saw it, Graham was committed before the ball hit boot.

As far as where the penalty was awarded, the refs refused to explain that one. That's because there's nothing they could have referred to, to back themselves up. They made it up on the run.

Rules are rules and if the refs can't apply them to the game what the hell is it we are watching?

Reynolds is facing 3 - 5 months on the sideline according to Maguire he looks like he has torn ligament of the bone .

christine 's picture

baggy gee I have been to a few games that were supposed to start at 4.00pm & they haven't started till 10 - 12 minutes late each time .

Baggy_Gee's picture

I ment that I had the half time score before the "live" coverage started. We sat through every blow by blow of the first 70 minutes only for the pretence to be thrown away in the last ten. Would have loved to have seen graham pull out when he was airborne blocking the shot. Horrible call and the dogs deserved the win after dominating the bunnies all game. How they didn't score at the back end of the first half is beyond me. On the other side of the coin I hope Morris misses at least a week for that kick at Luke's head

Baggy_Gee's picture

He may have moved the penalty due to the serve all the dog players gave him. But where are the guts just to give the reason instead of taking the "I'm the boss" line".

Johnny Ray's picture

All I've got to say about today's Bulldog V Rabbitohs game is Thank God that wasn't last year Grand Final cause dude I don't care what anybody says, Bulldogs were robbed ! That and just on Titans game, what Marketing Executive decided that team based in Queensland should play wearing New South Wales colours ? Am I only one that thinks their strip should be, I don't know, Maroon ? Yeah no wonder man nobody there follows this team ... :-(

Baggy_Gee's picture

28 minutes into the Broncos game and a rubbish try given to the ponies and I'm out for the night. Stupid stupid call. Control needs to be enforced.

Coach Potato's picture

And currently only Greg Inglis is good enough to receive a penalty for playing the ball forward whilst walking off the mark and without a hand being laid on him. God he's good.

a's picture

What will happen to the bulldogs

Baggy_Gee's picture

Hopefully nothing when the match review committee looks at it. Their fans though, books should be thrown at them. It is a sad way to end a good game of football and I'm saddened that Renyolds is so badly inured but Graham was trying to smother the kick not attack his legs.

a's picture

I am on 2 from 2
Wally is on 0 from 2
This might be the week I finally catch up to him

christine 's picture

nrl is talking about life bans for the bulldogs fans . & a you've taken the same as me this week , i'm not so sure on the manly game now . & baggy gee I know what your saying about graham he did show genuine concern for Reynolds but we are not refs we don't get a say but I do know someone on the match review committee so it will be interesting to see what comes from it all .

The Joker's picture

I will be withdrawing from tipping after this week and WILL NOT be watching the NRL again. It's an absolute disgrace to watch the game go down the drain and lose supporters over the way the game is over ruled and infected with a refereeing virus that has spread through the players AND the refs and nothing CAN or WILL be done to prevent it happening again. Goodbye.

christine 's picture

I think we all need to settle down things will come out in time from todays game .

a's picture

Yeh me too

Coach Potato's picture

The bottle throwing was unfortunately a Bulldogs fans act and that makes it easy for the media to latch on to. No question its a form of assault though, so its 100% not condoned. Maybe they should invent soft foam objects that are legal and OK to throw at refs at an time fans want to release their displeasure valve?

I know I can make some inflammatory comments sometimes, just hoping I haven't influenced anyone too much. Each to their own. My dust has settled, and I realise that refereeing has been no better this millennium and still, I follow. Good/Bad Friday should show as nothing to have surprised too much.

christine 's picture

a I want you to understand what you accomplished yesterday it wasn't just wally you got points back on it was also others at the top of the ladder but some was only I point but I point is I point & that's what all this strategy stuff I been telling you since the start of last season is all about so don't get to carried away by it stay focused & try to do it all again next week each week you possible can ok it's daunting but satisfying at the same time , well done a good for you .

Coach Potato's picture

..and great sports Baggy Gee and Johnny Ray - tipping South's but thinking you shouldn't have got the tipping point. Feel free to give it back :p

christine 's picture

coach I want you to understand why I joined souths this season my mother had a seizure at 5.30am on the very day of the grand final last year & it wasn't until we got her to hospital that we were told she had also had two strokes but even though all that had happened she still managed to watch the grand final from her hospital bed because she was really excited to see souths in the grandfinal & due to a lot of complications my mum passed away on the 20th of janurary this year because she never really recoved from the seizure & strokes so the way I see it is i'm doing what my mum couldn't do by being a souths member & i'm also enjoying being a souths member they have a awesome fan base & I may even do it all again next year if my illness permits seeing as I got ms 1 month before my mum died but I just wanted you to understand my reason for being a souths member coach , sorry to bring all that up again thinker I have said all that I want to say on that matter.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I'm not really sure if I can give it back Coach, but if you guys ever want to catch up with me then there is one way. Parraboku, which as I'm sure Johnny Ray will back me up on, is Japanese for way of the Eel.

Steel Panther's picture

Would be interested to hear your comments on the Dogs v Bunnies match last night Thinker.

Coach Potato's picture

I hear people saying Graham should get the same time out of the game as Adam Reynolds. How sad a day that would be for the game to punish such an accidental collision in what is believed to be a contact sport. Judge and jury being the media using evidence of crowd behaviour and past club misdemeanour to sentence a player who has since apologised for wearing his heart on his captain's sleeve.

Tailspin's picture

I reckon graham is a great player with a lot of heart and he puts 100 percent into every game, it's a shame the way that game ended, the dogs deserved that win by playing the better game, but as usual the refs stuff it up again, but the game always goes on, great call people's who picked the raiders, go the cowboys

Tailspin's picture

P.S what's doing a, can't believe you went against the boys

Johnny Ray's picture

Looks like I'll be calling Beautician in morning. Make my appointment for around 5pm. Sharks beating Roosters ten nil ! Dude :-(

Shanghai's picture

At 14-zip, maybe Georgie C knew something I didn't

Baggy_Gee's picture

Wow, what a weekend so far. Maybe I should have dropped my tips and taken all the away teams. The trend is against my Eels. Keeping the faith though.

Coach Potato's picture

Teams right down to Tigers in 11th have a chance at finishing 4th by weeks end. That's making it a pretty interesting Easter Monday

Johnny Ray's picture

"Yeah Hello ? Hello is this Curl Up And Dye Beauty Salon ? Yeah Hey This is Johnny Ray ringing you ... Yeah Hey Denise how you doing ? Yeah man I'm good ... I'm good as ... No, no, Roosters lost. Twenty to twelve ...I know ! And I shaved my legs for this ? Dude ! Yeah look the reason why I am ringing you is because I want to make appointment ... No, no, it's not about my highlights ... No I want to see if I can make an appointment for tomorrow ... Yeah, yeah, I want to get my Vay Jay Jay bedazzled ... Yeah $360 ... and what does this sort of procedure entail ... All over body wax, right ... Brazilian, right ... Pubes foiled then placed under the heater to be frosted, sure, right ... " ;-D

a's picture

Cowboys playing tomrrow I tipped against them but I hope they win

Baggy_Gee's picture

"All over body wax, right ... Brazilian, right ... Pubes foiled then placed under the heater to be frosted, sure, right ... " you really have my sympathy Denise. JR you better let Denephew do it, we don't want Denise to be chased out of her industry.

christine 's picture

3 from 5 with 3 still to go .

christine 's picture

has anyone checked out the ladder manly are in 16th place

a's picture

Well if the trend does continue that means Tigers Warriors and Cowboys will win tomrrow I went for all home teams and I will keep the home teams maybe a home team will win if no home teams win tomrrow Wally will be 0 from 8 at the moment he is on 0 from 5

Johnny Ray's picture

16 th place ! Whoo ! I better get full frontal then because that calls for celebration ! Thanks Christine ! ;-D

a's picture

You will be calling Beautican tomrrow Jhonny Ray

christine 's picture

just how safe is toovey's job looking now ?

Coach Potato's picture

South's currently $11 biggest outsider to miss the finals. Without Reynolds, could The Thinker's 10th be now on the cards? Nice price if you think so. Chief playmaker, including kicking game, and goal-kicker. I know they were a lost cause in the 2013 prelim without him. $11 huh?

a's picture

Souths might struggle here

christine 's picture

Sutton is returning from breaking his jaw he's 1 week out there saying so we'll see how they go kyle turner is also returning I think he's one week out & walker is 2 weeks away from being back but I thing I do know souths is one of those teams that if you tell them they can't do something then they do it & they are only human after all if they don't do any good this season then so be it but I don't go telling any of you what team you can support .

christine 's picture

lets just see if bulldogs have any comp points taken off them yet , some say they will & coach even graham has said he didn't know the penalty rule .

a's picture

How many points will they lose if they do

christine 's picture

may be 2 but well see if they even do yet but it pisses me off that game was on Friday & yet we are still talking about it on monday having others trying to influence people to their way of thinking shame on you for that you know who i'm taking about .

christine 's picture

I also here that tom burgess has reportedly all but signed on the line with manly for next year but that still has to be announced as yet & if they get him then they will certainly get sam who isn't making the cut in England so how will souths be then ?

Anonymous's picture

On ya Wally. You got one! Go STORMERS hahahaha

Rodney's picture

Man oh man!! Wally has let me down this week....
I came 2nd in my last year tipping contest with his help, I'll stay
strong for at least another week..LOL

Anonymous's picture

Can't lose comp points for crowd behaviour.
Anyone want to RENT A CROWD and crash the next Broncos game????

CANNOT BE DONE TO THE TEAM VIA POINTS. Not sure "who you know on the Match Review Committee" ( maybe the Janitor ) but they are NOT very knowledgeable at all.

And JOKER, have a drink of cement man! Geez, GROW UP!!!! 2 out of 7. WOW, you will be missed hahahahaha

Coach Potato's picture

Hopefully my offering of a pasted copy of the rule book was appreciated enough for interested fans to have a read. Most people will probably declare , yeah, no fear, I know the rules - and I bet you they dont. For example, how many know this is at the bottom of page 12 ...Referee unsighted: The Referee should not disallow a try because he was not in
a position to see the grounding of the ball.

This means that (rightly or wrongly) if there is a Steve Matai effort, or just this minute, a Matt Moylan effort, then the rules declare only clear evidence to show the ball is not on the ground can make it a No Try. It also means the ref has absolutely no ability to make an initial No Try call. They are bound (by the rules) to make the initial call Try, and only clear video can overrule. If there is no footage to make a call the NRL says its a Try. Please referees, apply the rules to the decisions you make! It's all we ask.

I bet most also dont know there's still such thing as ...Boring through forwards!! A player may pick up the ball at the scrum and bore through his own forwards to ground the ball for a try... Or this one -Ball bursts 2. If the ball bursts as a player is taking a place kick at goal he should be allowed another kick. If a player grounds the ball
for a try and then it is noticed that the ball has burst, the try
should be allowed. Otherwise, if the ball bursts, play is
stopped, the ball is replaced and a scrum is formed to re-start
play at the point where the ball bursts. The team in
possession or last in possession shall have the loose head
and the put-in. Geez, I'd go a long way to see someone do a switcheroo with a trick exploding ball, just for a bit of light entertainment. Why not, its in the bloody rules!
