Brisbane Broncos vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium
Warm conditions will test both teams as they back up from the club challenges in the north of England. Based on the form coming out of those games, the Bunnies look like the better side. Corey Parker laces up for the 300th time for the Broncos, and Bennett has long been the master of galvanising a team for the big occasion. They'll lift...but how much can they lift? The position shuffling that is expected to take place in the Broncos backline will be interesting to watch, but I wonder out loud if such a radical approach may take time to bed down. The Broncos halves are potentially the best playmaking combination in the game, but we'll need to be patient to see the best of that pairing also. Those Burgess boys will be hurting after 80 minutes on a warm Brisbane night, but I expect the Bunnies will hang on in what should be a gob-smackingly entertaining way to start the 2015 season.
Verdict – Rabbitohs by 4
Result - Rabbitohs 36 defeated Broncos 6
Parramatta Eels vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – Pirtek Stadium
I don't paraphrase former US presidents often enough, but that's about to change. It was Lyndon B. Johnson who once said (of J. Edgar Hoover) "It's probably better to have him inside the tent pissing out, than outside the tent pissing in." That quote applies in the case of new Eels recruit Anthony Watmough, and I imagine it also applies to new Sea Eagles recruit Willie Mason. I expect both to rise for this occasion. Sadly for the Eels, if you added Jarryd Hayne to their line-up they'd look like a top eight side. Manly still look like a top eight side, and Daly Cherry-Press-Conference will be keen to impress the 400 NRL teams that are chasing his signature. Parramatta surprised just about everyone in round one last year when they tore the Warriors apart. Another stellar performance wouldn't surprise and their record over the Sea Eagles at this venue is compelling, but Manly simply look stronger across the paddock. It's always worth watching these two clash. The hate between these sides is real and if you get nice and close to the television you can feel it. It will be interesting to see how Watmough comes to terms with his new Sea Eagle-hating lifestyle. The addition of Willie Mason can only help.
Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4
Result - Eels 42 defeated Sea Eagles 12
Newcastle Knights vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – Hunter Stadium
Although the Warriors record in Sydney isn't flash, their record in Newcastle isn't too bad. This seems odd, because I imagine they travel via Sydney to get to Newcastle. Perhaps flying out of Sydney lifts their spirits. Both sides improve in daylight, so I'm expecting a high-quality game. The Warriors are warm favourites, but the Knights will be super keen to impress at home. Adam Clydsdale at hooker for the Knights is a head-scratcher for me, but I'll assume he's shown Rick Stone he's up to it. Note the addition of Ryan Hoffman for the Warriors - he's the sort of player that could complete the Warriors jigsaw - which has been quite a puzzle since they joined the NRL.
Verdict – Knights by 8
Result - Knights 24 defeated Warriors 14
Gold Coast Titans vs Wests Tigers – Saturday night – CBus Super Stadium
If you want to get down...down to the ground...Cocaine....They supply*, they supply*, they supply*....Cocaine.
Given all the controversy surrounding the Titans I expect them to make a statement this weekend. By that I mean they're required to make a statement (at Southport Police station) this weekend. I know teams can rally together in the face of adversity, but seriously. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Tigers form in the pre-season, and they'll win this with a leg in the air and a spring in their step.
*allegedly
Verdict – Tigers by 8
Result - Tigers 19 defeated Titans 18
North Queensland Cowboys vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium
In what is a round with some tremendous contests this could be the best of the lot. I'm keen on the Chooks in season 2015 but I'm leaning to the home side in round one for two reasons. Firstly, it's pretty warm in Townsville at this time of year and those chooks might cook themselves (given that half their team are Kiwis they might overcook themselves). Secondly, the absence of Roosters hooker Jake Friend will be telling. Someone has to step up in his absence and make 50+ tackles on a warm night. And we're talking tough tackles - Matt Scott, James Tamou and Jason Taumalolo aren't going to stop themselves. Find a television and plonk yourself. Games like these are GoggleBox-worthy.
Verdict – Cowboys by 10
Result - Roosters 28 defeated Cowboys 4
Penrith Panthers vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Sunday afternoon – Pepper Stadium
Pepper Stadium? Pepper Stadium? You're telling me I have to write sensible analysis on a game being played at Pepper Stadium? Once both teams find out where this venue is I expect the Bulldogs to settle down and turn this into a battle of the big guys. It's an imposing Bulldogs pack, and the two youngsters coming through (Jackson and Klemmer) aren't far behind the established forwards. The Morris twins can score enough four pointers to keep up with those rising superstars in the Panthers backline, and if it's really close Trent Hodkinson can slot a field goal to get them home. In fact, with Hodkinson and Soward on the same park, having a punt on a field goal in this game isn't the silliest thing you could do (the silliest thing you could do is name your home ground after a spice).
Verdict – Bulldogs by 7
Result - Panthers 24 defeated Bulldogs 18
Cronulla Sharks vs Canberra Raiders – Sunday night – Remondis Stadium
Forgive me for sounding high and mighty for a moment, but I do find it a little odd that their are Titans players on the bench because they (might) have used cocaine on a Bucks weekend while all these peptide-injecting Sharks are free to play. Am I being precious? I am aren't I? I'm precious. Anyhoo you didn't come here to hear me preach. You're here to see me tip 51% of these games correctly (or wait for Wally's tips most likely). For my money it's the Sharks, with or without drugs, and I'm prepared to call this tip my good thing of the weekend. Shane Flanagan is back and the boys from the Shire would love to welcome him back with a win.
Verdict – Sharks by 8
Result - Raiders 24 defeated Sharks 20
St George Illawarra Dragons vs Melbourne Storm – Monday night – Jubilee Oval
I'm not sure if the Dragons are playing ducks and drakes with their team line-up, but if Ah Mau and George Rose are the starting props for the Dragons this game will be over seconds after kick-off. That said, the Storm have named Cameron Smith and he's hardly a certain starter. Picking a winner six nights before the game is scheduled is never easy, and much could change between now and Monday night - keep your ears tuned for team changes. The Storm are slightly less reliable on the road but with the big three named and some genuine talent coming through the roster they should be good enough to prevail. That the Dragons are backing up from a trip to England gives me a shot of confidence.
Verdict – Storm by 2
Result - Storm 12 defeated Dragons 4

Good morning all.
I had almost forgotten ( stressing the "almost") how good it is to read The Thinkers insights into our treasured game. Wrong or right I don't care just keep em coming!
I'm with the Thinker on all games except the Knights/Warriors I think our Kiwi mates will be a little too strong.
So...2015 round 1 YAAHOOOOOO

On a lighter note....
Paul Gallen has announced that after this year he will retire from the NRL and take up a career in the beauty industry. He has issued the following statement " I give away so many free facials in every game, usually applied by my elbows, that I thought it was time I got paid for them."
Good luck to the old crew and welcome to the new tipsters!

Great to hear from you again Mark A. Welcome back sir.
And welcome aboard Couch and Tiger.
Tipsters,
And I think you should know who you are by now. This year we will have as many as 25 of you, which is more than enough for my Helper mate and I to contend with.
As an added incentive our supporters at William Hill have offered some prizes for the best tipsters this season:
1st place - $200 bonus bet
2nd place - $75 bonus bet
3rd place - $25 bonus bet
Now Wally and The Thinker aren't included in the competition, so you just have to finish in the top three (excluding us) and a prize is yours.
Also, not everyone is 18 or older, and not everyone likes to gamble (responsibly). With that in mind, I'll be offering an alternative prize to people who fit into either of those categories.
1st place - NRL team footy jersey (size/club/gender of your choosing)
2nd place - NRL team polo shirt (size/club/gender of your choosing)
3rd place - NRL team football
In the event of any ties/potential ties I'll be asking for some score predictions in the Grand Final to break any deadlocks. Ultimately, the judges decision is final. I get to be judge...my parents would be proud.
Thanks again to William Hill for being a part of it all, and thanks to The Thinker for coughing up for alternative prizes if needed.
William Hill will also be offering a range of promotional bet offers throughout the season for people using this site (including some specials for round one). Those promo bets are open to all visitors to the site, not just people in the tipping competition. I'll publish offers/links in the comments section in the days ahead.
For those that missed out on joining the comp for this season I do apologize. We would love to include everyone, but unfortunately (or fortunately) my Helper and I have jobs and wives and children and pets and responsibilities outside of Thinker Central - there is a limit to how much time we can commit to the site and how much scotch my helper wants to drink every year.
We plan to expand the tipping comp again next year. If you didn't make the cut stay with us, and please add your comments and tips in the comments section if you wish.
That's it from me for now...I'm rambling. I'll be back with some betting promotions and general chit-chat later on.
All the best

Yeah Everybody ! We're back ! We're back ! We're back ! Man I don't know about you but I have you missed you guys so much ! Especially you Thinker so let's get into this week tips ! Good luck everybody ! :-)
Rabbits - Sorry Thinker but I don't see your team making the top eight this year and since my first few weeks of tips are going to be based on who I think is going to make into this year finals I'm going have to go with Bunnies in this one. The Rabbitohs by eight points.
Sea Eagles - Eels can't win without Hayne and with him gone you've got to pick Sea Eagles to win this game. Sea Eagles by sixteen points.
Knights - Warriors don't win their first game. I've followed this team long enough know rules by now and that's fact. Knights by six points.
Tigers - Three more sleeps to their first game of the season or if you play for Gold Coast Titans, one more sleep ! Seriously there anybody left in that club that's not on cocaine ? West Tigers by sixteen points.
Cowboys - The home ground advantage out in Townsville should be enough to give this game to Cowboys in what I suspect will be close even contest that could go into golden point. Cowboys by one point.
Bulldogs - This game for me is hardest one to pick as you've got one of most overrated sides at home playing one of the most underrated. In circumstances like this I just go with what Thinker says cause most times in situations like this he gets them right.Bulldogs by two points.
Raiders -I think Ricky Stuart will start to surprise everybody this year and take Raiders alot further than most people suspect, maybe even into finals. That why I'm taking them to beat the Sharkies this week in what will be if I'm right, the upset of round ! Raiders by eight points.
Dragons - I'm picking both of these sides to struggle this year as can't see either of them making the top eight. The Dragons by four points.
My best bet of round : 3 Leg Multi, Rabbits, Raiders, Dragons $1 Aus = $9 Aus Return ( According to odds avialable at William Hill online ).
Thanks Again Thinker. Thanks Everybody ! Gone The Warriors ! ;-D

Ok ok, I can live with the haters. Just calling it now, Eels minimum 9th outright end of season. Here are my tips based on fear and loathing in Toowoomba
Bunnies - Daylight - Broncos. Not much to say, Class always shines through
Eels - Twice in two games at home. We are going to make this habit forming by the end of the year
Warriors - I think that despite the naysayers think, I'm sure that the Warriors can use that burst of new year energy and start fast against the Knights and then hold the line
Tigers - Sad that such a great place as the glitter strip can't support a NRL team, but hopefully I'm wrong and they can make an impact this year and bring the crowds back to a great game in a great area.
Cowboys - Cooked chooks sounds like an accurate description for this game but we'll have to wait and see if the NQC cricket team (heavily copied from South Africa Cricket success in major finals) suffers from the cold when they travel.
Bulldogs - The hardest game to pick for me, but Des just has a way of getting his team over the line
Sharks - Let the excuses begin, Ricky will blame playing on a sunday and the coastal winds and tides for the loss to one of the better teams on paper over the last few years.
Storm - Craig is like Des, a coach who can graft a win anywhere or anytime (unless its against the Raiders)
Best of luck for all tippers and hope your teams get over the line, unless I didn't back them

Would love to tip the Broncos for a first up win, they didn't impress immediately in the trials (better things to come). The Bunnies on the other hand have just kept going from last year.
Bunnies by 6
Eels v Manly should be a cracker, Watmouth and Willie? Should be interesting. If the Eels start winning, and Watmouth has a blinder, the Manly coaches box will look good from the outside.
Manly by 6
Knights v Warriors, bit off a tossup for this one, will go with the Warriors in a tight game.
Warriors by 6
Tigers should take care of an under resourced Titans.
Tigers by 16
Cowboys at home should be too good for the Roosters, it will be to hot and the Cowboys should win easily. Nothing wrong with the Rosters though
Cowboys by 10
I'm hoping the Doggies start with a good win over the Panthers, should be another close game
Doggies by 6
I always found that backing the Raiders is like sticking a pen in your eye. So I will go with the Sharkies for this game.
Sharkies by 16
Storm v Dragons should be another close game.

Hi everyone,
Woo-hoo, we’re back again and the Newbie is all a quiver! Seems like an eternity since the GF was on but thank the gods the footy’s returned to quench our thirst.
Rabbitohs - yeah the Broncos have some new guys and more importantly a new coach (Mr Bennett you are an absolute legend!) but the Newbie is thinking that Souths, even though they’ve lost big Sam and Luke (I think), are looking fairly good for the season opener. Reigning Premiers, Auckland Nines winners and let’s not forget their 39-0 smash-fest against St Helens, has me tipping the Bunnies.
Sea Eagles (herein referred to this year as Manly) - not sure about this one. I reckon either side could come up with the bikkies here. The Eels have Mr Watmough but how will they cope without the Hayne-Train? Interesting to see how the Manly mob react to AW playing in the blue and gold. Hmm, I’m flipping a coin here and tipping the Boys from Brookie.
Warriors - the Knights have a pretty good record of late at the “Fortress” they call Hunter Stadium but Newbie likes the Warriors this week. I remember watching Shaun Johnson carve us up in the Tests last year and what little research I’ve done, it seems that Solomone Kata is also one to watch here. Warriors for me. Peow! Peow!
Wests - Titans are (or should be) a train smash given the dramas that have befallen them lately. Newbie’s always surprised at how we keep getting knuckleheads running around all codes of footy. My theory is that maybe they’re paid that much money they don’t need to work during the day and as such, have far too much free time on their hands. When you have lots of spare time and lots of spare cash the weaker minded individuals seem to get “lost” and get themselves into a bit of trouble. What a shame. Anyway, I seem to remember that Wests usually start the season fairly well and someone called Andrew (g’day mate) mentioned that their trial form was pretty good so I’ll go with the Tigers to win this week. BTW Thinker, nice intro with lyrics from the old JJ Cale classic. Me and the boys used to listen to that song all the time back in the day. Didn’t “do it” mind you, just listened to the song. It’s true, just ask Shanghai (he ain’t heavy, he’s my brother).
Roosters - seriously, you should all know that I’m gonna tip the Mighty Chooks. Mind you, the bookies have the Cowboys as favourites in the betting I see but that won’t sway me. Yeah we have some blokes gone and some missing but that video the Boss put up of my “new hero” Roger Tuivasa-Sheck has me all excited! I’m sure he’s gonna fill in for Minnie more than admirably. Only worry I have, besides the new season cobwebs, is how much the Cowboys will remember last year’s finals heartbreak and what JT will do. Man he’s a superstar! Nah, Roosters for me!
Doggies - have absolutely no idea on this one. I actually see either side winning this but seeing as I have to make a call, let’s go for the Doggies. Newbie has a small amount of respect for how they “grind away” in their games and that should be good enough for me. We’ll see as the year progresses shall we?
Sharks - as much as I hate to tip any team that has “cry-baby” Gallen playing for them, I just can’t make a case for the Green Machine in round 1. They are woeful and playing at home should see the Sharks get in here.
STG - the Newbie’s gonna throw in a roughie and tip the Dragons here. On paper, you’d think the Storm Troopers should win this but hey, strange things happen in this wonderful game of ours from time to time.
Geez, I must be so excited about the season starting again. I’ve definitely gone overboard with the amount of words I’ve written. My “short essay” has turned into a freakin’ novel. Sorry about that. I’ll try and keep it short’n’sweet from now on.
P.S. Great to be back! Thanks Thinker and TLH. Yee-Hah!

Is the guru tipping again this year
Submitted by Declan_S on
1. Souths - just too strong for a Broncos side that will still be getting used to/ moulding to a Wayne Bennett style game plan, which also won't suit the new ruck interpretation.
2. Parramatta - The forwards for the eels look capable of winning this game on their own. Pirtek stadium brings the best out of the eels also. I can only see a switched on and fully firing DCE orchestrating a win here, but you can imagine relations within the club won't be too rosy after his rejection of the million dollar a season offer and I believe this will affect his performance.
3. Newcastle - The Knights are playing at the fortress during the day against a team who rarely can conjure a win in round 1. The inclusion of 4 debutants and the exclusion of tomkins makes for possible struggles for the Warriors getting over the white line. Too much class in this Newcastle backline.
4. Tigers - If the Tigers don't win this, they'll probably win the spoon
5. Cowboys - Will be a very close game with both teams in red hot (trial) form. I'm with the thinker on this one; someone has gotta make those tackles in the middle against what is looking like the most devastating forward pack in the competition.
6. Panthers - Anyone who thinks that they can confidently pick the winner of this one is joking. I'll put my money on Penrith due to the home ground advantage and the matt moylan factor. Although is Bmoz fires, who knows what will happen.
7. Sharks - Canberra will take some time before their combinations start clicking. They were woeful against a Knights side in their trial, they won't be much better here.
8. Storm if cameron smith plays, Dragons if he doesnt.

Good to see all my old friends here for another season and welcome to the new tipsters. Round 1 is always a lottery but here goes:
Rabbitohs - Better early preseason form
Manly - The superior halves combination for the Sea Eagles sees me tipping them
Warriors - Benefit of the doubt for the umpteenth season to win their opening game
Tigers - Too much turmoil on the gold strip
Cowboys - Home ground advantage in a tight one
Dogs - Coz a mate of mine says they have a better goal kicker
Sharks - I can't see the Raiders being any better than last year but I can see an improvement in Cronulla
Storm - They should be too good in the forwards
Thank you Thinker for inviting me back and thank you too to the Thinker's Little Helper for all the work behind the scenes. Awesome to see some prizes this season.

The Guru’s been testing the depth of his bookies change jar this summer, nailing several packets of those big ol’school metal spikes right where it hurts. 321.69 : 1 is an equation now close to the ‘G’s heart. The Australian open, EPL and NFL SB have been great friends, however tonight the big show is back in town. NRL season 2015
(Apologies for the lateness Thinker, The Guru is flat out at work currently)
Brisbane – Wayne is back. The great coach has come home to lead the mighty Broncos to the finals. Brisbane will have the weather advantage and The Guru expects a home win. Bris 1-12
Manly – The Sea eagles may be on the way down but they should be good enough to cover Para. The poor old Eels could have had a crack in 2015 if the Prima dona didn’t jump ship. Man by 4
Newcastle – Should start the year with a win at home then fall off the grid. The Guru predicts the Novocastrians will struggle all year with inconsistency.
West Tigers – Could be one of the few times The Guru tips the Tigers this year, see how they go against the Snowy Titans…Party central after the game?
Cowboys – Need a good start to the year. Could be the second toughest game of the round.
Bulldogs – With the Morris twins in the three quarters the Doggies will have too much class
Sharks – Expect some fireworks early, it will take the Raiders some time to accept their fate this year, hopefully Ricky can jag something as The Guru cant cheer for the grub club.
Melbourne – Notorious slow starting in the last few yrs, Melbourne’s Storm will expect to win this one. STG looked ok over in the Ol’Blighty but that was against soft poms. Could go either way.

Holy Bejezus, there was some pretty big scores for the first round, and my cowboys didn't turn up, but the roosters played really well. I think the big standout for the round was the Eels, very impressive, especially in the forward pack.
