Round twenty-four selections

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Penrith Panthers – Thursday night – WIN Stadium

I dare anyone, other than the Coach, to name the Panthers captain on Thursday night (no googling). Well, it surprised me when I saw the (c) beside the name of Elijah Taylor. I rate the bloke, but it's an indication of the challenges the Panthers have faced this year on the casualty front. Almost as strange, the Dragons captain (Ben Creagh) is starting on the bench. The Dragons had no trouble gaining ground in round 23 but turning that advantage into points proved troublesome. To be fair, the goal line defence of their opponent that night is the best in the business - getting through the Panthers seems a more attainable goal. Marshall has been named but we don't know for sure (he was named last week) - if he plays it increases my confidence.

Verdict – Dragons by 8

Result - Dragons 19 defeated Panthers 12

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

I've yacked on for years about the importance of the spine (1,6,7,9) in the modern game. This week the Rabbitohs have to replace two of theirs. John Sutton slots in for Luke Keary which should be okay, but only Issac Luke can adequately replace Issac Luke - and he's unavailable. Paul Carter will do his best impersonation. It's these changes that have probably driven the prices with the bookmakers - with the Bulldogs a warm favourite. That's fair enough, but their number nine on Friday night is Damien Cook - hardly their first choice either. I was more impressed with the Rabbitohs away win over the Cowboys than the Bulldogs away win over the Titans. That's better form surely. An upset, of sorts, in front of what should be a bumper crowd.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 7

Result - Bulldogs 32 defeated Rabbitohs 18

Cronulla Sharks vs Wests Tigers – Saturday afternoon – Remondis Stadium

Cronulla seemed hellbent on reminding everyone on Monday night what a bunch of nasty cheating cheats they were playing - I suppose they would know. Sadly for them they forgot to play any football and it backfired - scoring a grand total of zero tries in front of their home crowd. I'd expect them to remember to play some football this time, and on paper it's hard to see them getting beaten. The Tigers won't back down of course, what with their battle to avoid last, but an away win looks unlikely.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result - Sharks 40 defeated Tigers 18

New Zealand Warriors vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Mt Smart Stadium

The Cowboys were disappointing last Thursday against the Bunnies, but the Warriors have been disappointing for weeks. As I've said previously, almost every season we get suckered into the Warriors during the State of Origin period. Then we reach the run home to the finals, and more often than not they let us down. The only way I can see an upset here is if the Cowboys are really off and the Warriors are really on. That's possible, but it's all but impossible to tip it.

Verdict – Cowboys by 16

Result - Cowboys 50 defeated Warriors 16

Sydney Roosters vs Brisbane Broncos – Saturday night – Allianz Stadium

This is football, and possibly a crystall ball view of the 2015 grand final. First plays second and your eyeballs deserve the opportunity to see this. Hodges returns and both sides are essentially one prop forward shy of naming their best team. The Roosters should win the forwards battle for field position and win it comfortably, so it's just a matter of converting that position into points. The Dragons struggled last weekend, but you'd expect the Chooks to perform better in that regard. Manly showed us what a talented backline can do to the Broncos. I'm not expecting anything like that here, but the Chooks can make a statement at home this weekend, and take the top spot on the ladder in the process. Compulsory viewing.

Verdict – Roosters by 4

Result - Roosters 12 defeated Broncos 10

Gold Coast Titans vs Canberra Raiders – Sunday afternoon – CBus Super Stadium

It's pretty freaking unlikely, but if I was punting on a surprise inclusion in the finals race this season I'd be going with the Raiders. It's an absolute longshot, but their points differential gives them a shot if they can level up with some of the other teams battling for the 8th spot. The risk here is that they don't believe it, so I'm hoping Ricky Stuart can convince them a win in this game isn't pointless. If Ricky doesn't believe you'd have to pick the Titans - who would be eyeing this as the game that could get them off the bottom of the ladder. So that's the situation folks - are the Raiders enjoying a weekend away from the Canberra winter or are they here to play? Answer that correctly and you have your winner. If any of you are in daily contact with the Canberra coach I'd like to hear from you.

Verdict – Raiders by 10

Result - Titans 28 defeated Raiders 12

Manly Sea Eagles vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – Brookvale Oval

Manly are on a roll, and when Manly are on a roll you back them in the Sunday sessions at Brookie. You also back Brett Stewart to score a try - he's likely to get two. Parramatta argued they were still in finals contention (mathematically) before their loss last weekend, but they aren't anymore. It all adds up to a Sea Eagles victory.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 22

Result - Eels 20 defeated Sea Eagles 16

Melbourne Storm vs Newcastle Knights – Monday night – AAMI Park

I'm on holidays for goodness sake. Surely you don't need an explanation here.

Verdict – Storm by 16

Result - Knights 20 defeated Storm 6

...oh Manly and Melbourne can both qualify with 10 if they win their remaining matches. Streak theory said that too

tonibet's picture

a: thought you might say that ;-)
...the same might have been said for the hawks (AFL) tonight too (pre-game)?
Hawks ($1.14 > $1.08) 86-108 Port Adelaide ($5.57 > $9.00)
 ;-)

With Dragons in big big suspension trouble. Too bad for Panthers I remember when deliberate tripping was an automatic send off offence. Means their limited attack is limited even further, and losing the last two is just as likely. Parra beat Manly on Sunday and 26 is back on track. Those Dragons could still fall into 8th with the two losses.

a's picture

Remember Cowboys wil beat Warriors and that is that

Coach Potato's picture

# I did my ladder prediction for the next three weeks and it shows Roosters minor premiers on for/against. It shows Roosters needing to play Sharks first week (oh no!!! Anyone but the Sharks). I also shows Cowboys travelling to play at Suncorp. Not quite how everyone thought it would be.

Although based on my 3/8 average picking of winners, then the above is hardly likely.

Sure would be two great blockbusters almost local derbies with the week off and prelim final spots up for grabs.

christine 's picture

souths don't even deserve to be in finals with the way they played

Coach Potato's picture

They will be there. They had too many points to miss out. They will probably finish 5th or 6th now so still get a home knock-out Final, but I bet teams finishing 7th or 8th will be picking their lips.

Coach Potato's picture

*I mean licking. Picking's a bit disgusting

Johnny Ray's picture

Yep. I'm just leaving now to go watch Warriors take on 2015 Grand Final Winners, Nth Qld Cowboys. There I said it ! Are you happy now a ? ;-D

a's picture

Yes Johnny Ray I am happy because it will happen

a's picture

Cowboys won 50-16 after trailing 16-0

The Thinker's picture

Roosters v Broncos....wow!

a's picture

Shit! Who will I be cheering for out of Manly vs Roosters next week

Baggy_Gee's picture

Can't say that I'm overly confident in the Cowboys after watching the highlights. What would have been the result if the Warrior's momentum had remained unchecked?

christine 's picture

'' a '' if you really can't decide who to tip out of manly / roosters next week you can always tip a draw

Johnny Ray's picture

Future Johnny Ray is so dead right now ! Broncos ! :'(

a's picture

Well it is a 3 way race for minor premreship Roosters Broncos and Cowwboys

Coach Potato's picture

With Pearce and Hargreaves out - is it down to two again?

Coach Potato's picture

Souths without Inglis, surely they can't hang on to 4th R25 Broncos R26 Roosters

a's picture

I hope Cowboys win the premreship this year

Coach Potato's picture

Bennett says he wants to keep resting players next week against Souths. He's gonna do that at the risk of giving up home ground advantage in a few weeks time. I guess he also wants most of the squad to have some time on the park before finals. It's a huge gamble not to play your best team at this stage, and I never actually picked Bennett as a gambler. Dont think you'd even see him place 50c each-way out of his vast millions. Confusing

The Thinker's picture

The Coaltrain gets his wish - he's been named in the halves for the Titans today.

The number 6 is at fullback. The number 7 is at hooker. The number 1 is on the wing. The number 9 is on the bench. The halves will wear jerseys 14 and 20.

I can't keep up.

Johnny Ray's picture

Woohoo ! Titans ! I would high five future Johnny Ray if I haven't already broken his arm ! Broncos so should of beaten Roosters yesterday ! :-(

christine 's picture

Maguire has said inglis scans show nothing serious so he will be playing next week against broncos & both keary , luke will be back for the game

a's picture

I hope Tamou and Morgan are okay

Steel Panther's picture

Well your question about the Raiders has been answered Thinker. They were enjoying a weekend away from Canberra.

Any word on James Tamou? I was at the game last night and they sure did take a long time to take him from the field. Monster tackle though but the delay was a momentum killer for the Warriors not that I thought for a minute they would win even after going 16 points up. 50 unaswered points was nothing short of embarrassing.

a's picture

Bye Nye Manly lose like you will not make the finals

Coach Potato's picture

Sure the top 8 could end up 30, but guess what, its still 26. Dragons with suspensions aplenty and Manly have to play Roosters.

a's picture

How about Bulldogs

christine 's picture

" a " given the way manly just played does that now answer your ? about who to take next week between manly / roosters

a's picture

Yes but what I meant by that comment I made above is I do not know who to cheer for because I hate Manly but I want Roosters to lose to make way for the Cowboys

Johnny Ray's picture

Whoa first off congratulations to Coach Potato and Baggy Gee for picking Eels win this afternoon. Secondly I was at game too Steel Panther and agree with what you said. Once Tamou got injured that was it for Warriors as that really is what got Cowboys going. Next week is going to be interesting ... :-s

a's picture

I hope Cowboys beat Storm

Coach Potato's picture

26 points for 8th comes down to just Dragons losing away to a rejuvenated Gold Coast, and also at home to Tigers - although its at ANZ so almost 2 away games. Then Manly to only win one game or less against Roosters at Brooky next Friday (only 5 days away) and away to the Sharks. Seems not just likely. Seems odds on.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Take that Sea Beagles. Ahhhhh how sweet is the feeling that we may have halted the top 8 aspirations of Manly and therefore get Kieran Foran with an extra 4 weeks of rest.

Coach Potato's picture

Baggy, it's not quite over. You want the good news or the bad news? Good? Ok. Dragons 26 & +27, Eels 22 & -114. So 4 points to make up with 2 games to go. Possible? Yes. 141 to make up in for/against in just 2 games. Possible? I say yes. 2 x 35 point wins, and 2 x 35 point losses for the Dragons, +70 for Eels and -70 for the Dragons and that's 140 made up in for/against. Very unlikely but possible. Remember it's not just up to Parra to make up 141. Dragons will bring the target down with two losses.

And the bad news? Much easier for Manly to make up just 27 in differential. If they win one more game and Dragons lose twice, not much doubt Manly will probably still nab both St George and Parra for 8th spot.

a's picture

Eels can not make the finals

Baggy_Gee's picture

I was excited about Manly being closer to missing out on the 8 more so than Parra's slim chance of making the 8. Manly's last 2 games, Roosters, and Sharks, seem tougher than the Dragons draw of Titans's and Tigers. Early mad Monday is great for the players we have coming from other clubs as it gives them long to rest and rehabilitate before next year.

Manly will not make the finals

christine 's picture

inglis will not be playing this week against broncos he is having surgery but should be back to play against roosters

a's picture

Broncos will beat Ranbitohs

Coach Potato's picture

Christine, I think he is putting off the surgery until Monday so that he *can" play this Thursday.

Johnny Ray's picture

Ah can anybody please explain to me why tonight there is a tiger on Melbourne home field when Storm are playing Knights ? Dude I don't need to see this sort of shit ! I've done drugs in nineties that still haven't taken effect yet ! :-(
