Canterbury Bulldogs vs Parramatta Eels – Friday night – ANZ Stadium
The Bulldogs are firm favourites - strange I think. Now I'm the first to admit I've been wrong a couple of times in the past, but the Eels impressed in round one while the Dogs disappointed. Danny 'second chance' Wicks is back after a period of incarceration and he clearly spent his time inside converting his body into a toilet block - an impressive effort as he used to look a little more like one of those blow-up jumping castles. Pauli Pauli is taking a break for a while but there is plenty of size in the Eels pack and I expect them to hold their own. And it's great to see Chris Sandow smiling again (and looking fit). The Eels with a handicap start is the bet of the weekend for mine (gamble responsibly). I think they'll win, but even if they don't I can't see them losing by much. It's always worth the cost of turning on your television when these sides meet, and if nothing else you should tune in to watch Reece Robinson the goal-kicker - he appears to attain a transcendental state before each conversion and it's a delight to behold. Let's hope we get to see this moment of zen many times on Friday night.
Verdict – Eels by 4
Result - Bulldogs 32 defeated Eels 12
Cronulla Sharks vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – Remondis Stadium
Two of the more disappointing sides from round one clash and I'm struggling to line them up this early in the season. Both will improve as their halves continue to gel. Two worrying signs for the Broncos in game one - just one line break all game and a comprehensive shellacking in the metres gained department. Clearly they face an easier opponent this week, but the Sharks actually won the metres gained battle against the Raiders and I think they'll win that battle again. The home crowd should lift their forwards as well, and even if this is close I suspect Michael Gordon will win the goal-kicking battle with Corey Parker. Wayne Bennett has quite a bit of coaching ahead of him if he wants to get this Broncos side into the top four this season.
Verdict – Sharks by 4
Result - Broncos 10 defeated Sharks 2
Penrith Panthers vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday afternoon – Carrington Park
First and foremost some applause for the Panthers and their decision to take this game to Bathurst - a tremendous initiative and I'd love to see more of the same from every club. If I were wearing socks last Sunday afternoon the Panthers would have impressed them off me as they ploughed through the Bulldogs. Granted, the Dogs were coming home with a wet sail but by then the game was (almost) over. The Titans were mighty in defeat and I'm sure they'll try hard again, but this is away from home against a tougher opponent. Great backline, great pack, great coach, tremendous bench, experienced halves - the Panthers tick every box.
Verdict – Panthers by 14
Result - Panthers 40 defeated Titans 0
Manly Sea Eagles vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday night – Brookvale Oval
Empires rise and empires fall and here we have two of the great modern day rugby league empires facing each other and facing the cross-roads. Both clubs appear to be reaching a critical point where they could fall away or rebuild and keep on keeping on. I think the Storm will keep on keeping on. As the Storm do almost every season they ground out a low scoring victory in the first round. They made less metres, had less offloads, made more tackles, missed more tackles and conceded more penalties - and with all that (and away from home) they conceded just four points. This team wins. There was footage of Cherry-Evans and Toovey chatting on the field before the Manly/Eels game - and now we know what they were talking about. That performance was a long way from what we have come to expect from this Manly side. Manly usually plough on despite off-field dramas, but perhaps things are finally starting to unravel. To make matters worse Keiran Foran is out. Cherry-Evans will need to do much of the communicating with the team in attack - and I'm not sure if they're talking to each other at the moment. Steve Matai returns, which should shore up that edge defence that was sadly lacking last week, but it won't be enough.
Verdict – Storm by 8
Result - Sea Eagles 24 defeated Storm 22
North Queensland Cowboys vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium
Statement time...not so much from me, but from the Cowboys. The Cowboys were slow to start in season 2014, before coming home with a very wet sail. That very wet sail was enough to get them into the finals, but they don't want to leave themselves with that much work to do again. Interestingly, their only big win in the early rounds of last season was against the Knights at home, and I think they'll repeat the dose.
Verdict – Cowboys by 26
Result - Knights 16 defeated Cowboys 14
South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Sydney Roosters – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium
These two sides have been playing each other for quite some time now, but it's a contest that never gets tired. As if on cue both teams come to this contest in scintillating form after both travelled to Queensland and racked up convincing wins. These sides met three times last season and the Bunnies prevailed twice - winning the opening game of the season and the semi-final before going all the way. A big win over the Cowboys in Townsville is better form than a big win over the Broncos in Brisbane, but despite that I'm leaning ever so slightly to the Bunnies. If Jake Friend were playing I'd be leaning the other way. Let's hope we get a crowd upwards of 30,000 to add to the occasion - the game of the round.
Verdict – Rabbitohs by 7
Result - Rabbitohs 34 defeated Roosters 26
Canberra Raiders vs New Zealand Warriors – Sunday night – GIO Stadium
Two of the most exciting teams to watch in what could be one of the more entertaining games you'll see all season. Sadly though, we also have two of the most frustrating teams in what could be one of the more enfuriating games you'll see all season. We should know what hand we've been dealt after about ten minutes. In recent years the Raiders have made a habit of raising the expectations of their fans at home only to let them (and The Thinker) down. Konrad Hurrell is out for the Warriors, but Sam Tomkins returns. A disrupted Warriors went close to beating the Knights last weekend and I think they can fall over the line in Canberra.
Verdict – Warriors by 4
Result - Warriors 18 defeated Raiders 6
Wests Tigers vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Monday night – Campbelltown Stadium
The Tigers got a fright from a gallant Titans outfit before experiencing the overwhelming joy of winning with the last play of the game. They'll carry that enthusiasm into Monday night, but will that be enough? These sides played twice last season and the Dragons were convincing winners on both occasions. Clearly the Dragons struggled in attack against the Storm, but the Tigers line may prove a little easier to crack. I won't have many with me, but I'll go with the Red V in an upset....Let's Get Widdopulous!
Verdict – Dragons by 2
Result - Tigers 22 defeated Dragons 4

This round makes round 1 look like easy tipping..
|Bulldogs| vs. Eels
The battle of the big boppers. Junior Paulo (the answer to the Dogs' Kasiano) surely won't be playing, meaning Danny Wicks (who isn't nearly fit enough) will come in. For a less experienced Eels team playing at ANZ stadium (where they don't like playing too much), it's going to be a hard ask to dominate this Bulldogs pack and allow Sandow to weave his magic.
Sharks vs. |Broncos|
On paper these teams are fairly evenly matched, so it will no doubt come down to who can get into their groove first, and which pair of halves can dominate play and create chances for their team. Albeit cliche, the performance of fullbacks turned five-eights (Milford and barba) may determine their team's performance to a considerable extent. Watch out for Ofa'hengaue and Nikorima!
On a side note though, does anyone know why Bennett is leaving out Vidot??
|Panthers| vs. Titans
The Titans certainly did all they could to silence the haters against the Tigers, but even at home, they could not come up with the goods. It will be an even harder ask to put in a similar performance against a team I have no doubt will make the top 4. Not to mention they probably won't have more than 100 supporters in the crowd.
Sea eagles vs. |Storm|
Do you pick the better outside backs or the better forward back? I'll go with the better forward pack, only because Kieran Foran won't be playing. He brings mongrel and fires his team up and will be sorely missed, even Mason can't replicate the same effect. Blake Green should be better after his first hit-out, so should Smith in terms of his match fitness.
|Cowboys| vs. Knights
I always hate tipping against my beloved Knights, but I can't see them getting over the top of the likes of Matt Scott and Taumalolo. Couple that with the Cowboys rarely losing two home games in a row. That being said, I think the Knights should be able to keep this a close one with the confidence they gained from last week's win. You always hope Thurston is off his game when he's playing your team but I'm wise enough to know that he pretty much never goes out of form these days. Cowboys in a tight one (for at least the first 60 minutes)
Roosters vs. |Rabbitohs|
I flipped a coin to decide this one.
Raiders vs. |Warriors|
I should've taken a closer look at the Raiders before betting against them last week, their team isn't actually as bad as you'd think! But the Warriors look a far better side with Tomkins at the back (and Tui Lolohea included in the line up as well). The Warriors never play well in Canberra, but the night time conditions will suit them more than the day time of Newcastle. Look for Shaun Johnson to bounce back after a dismal performance.
|Tigers| vs. Dragons
This is also a hard one to pick. The halves for the Dragons are better players at the moment and are playing better football, but the rest of the Tigers outfit is probably better than the rest of the Dragons'. The game being played at Campbelltown is also a big bonus for the Tigers. This game will depend on Luke Brooks immensely (who will be slightly better than he was against the Titans), so with no real confidence, I'm going to go with the Tigers.
2015 winning ratio: 6/8

Awesome. Thanks alot Thinker ! First off congratulations goes out to Couch Potato, Declan_S and Tigerholic for making it onto top of table this week with their picks. Also as a staunch Warriors supporter this week marks special ocassion for me as this week is 20th anniversary of club entering comp ! I would like to post up compilation of all times our team has won the grand final but since we still haven't won grand final I've decided to post this up instead : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DuxilGev8dI Sort of help explains to people what I've doing with my whole life the last twenty years ! Yeah ... let's get on with this week's tips ;-D
Bulldogs - Defensively Canterbury has the edge in this game and is why I am going with them to beat Paramatta. Bulldogs by ten points.
Sharks - Brisbane will struggle here as they always have done lately against this team who from everything I have seen so far have more chances of making top eight than them ! The Sharks by twelve points.
Panthers - Yeah you all know why I'm going with Penrith to beat Gold Coast. Cocaine is one hell of a drug ! The Panthers by twenty points.
Storm - Melbourne is playing much more composed football than Sea Eagles at present and is why I'm picking them ! Storm by eight points.
Cowboys - Cowboys at home against Newcastle. Cowboys by sixteen points.
Roosters - Rabbitohs first loss of season. The Roosters by two points.
Raiders - Warriors don't win in Canberra and they won't win there without all their full man squad playing. The Raiders by four points.
Tigers -Dragons are nothing without their fullback Dugan playing. Tigers to win in what I suspect will be close game. Tigers by six points.
Thanks again Thinker ! Thanks everybody ! Good luck this week with your picks ! Gone the Warriors ! ;-D

Ugh, I completely missed the first round and I got 5 in my work comp =(
This weeks round will hopefully be just as good although I think its a tough one:
Eels - It was a great start to my footy watching season seeing the Eels ride roughshod over those damn sea eagles. Admittedly Manly looked okay WHEN they had possession but even with successive penalties favouring them they couldn't convert it to points. Think this will be a tight one but have to give the Eels benefit of the doubt despite many years of being burn't
Sharks - This could go either way but I tend to think that the Broncos usually slow start to a season will bite them again.
Panthers - I tipped the Titans last week much to my disgust and the Panthers look a whole lot better than the Tigers
Storm - I'm shaky on this one too as I think Manly are a better side than what they displayed against my long suffering Parramatta. The Storm had a great defensive game however and I'm banking on that to see them through.
Cowboys - Even though they were pretty ordinary last week, the head to head record for these two has always seen the home side win.
Rabbitohs - This has to be the match of the round or a close call against the Eels/Bulldogs game. The Roosters are a class side but momentum is on Souths side and they were in awesome form last week.
Raiders - I tipped against the Raiders last week, I mean who wouldn't have...well except for the diehard loon at my work. Boy didn't I hear a LOT about that on monday =/ Tipping the Raiders only due to the Warriors poor travel form but I think this could go either way.
Tigers - Another close game in my opinion. There was not much in both the Tigers and Dragons games last week.

Missed it by that much. But noone puts Paulo in the corner.
Eels, they are my team and I'm yet to suffer the long years of disappointment. No Renyolds hurts more than no Paulo and our guys play at ANZ as a home.
Sharks, Never been a broncos fan since neither were particulary good last week I'll take the team I like slightly more
Panthers, its going to be a struggle to pick the Titans at any point this year, but I still hope that football on the coast survives
Storm, Craig made a win appear, there should be another on the horizon come a visit to Brookvale
Cowboys, They let me down last week in the heat, odd but when they get going they are going to terrify someone, this week it hopefully is the Knights turn
Rabbits, A crushing win from both teams I think that as always the best forwards will get the job done and the Rabbits have the second best forward pack in the game this year
Warriors, How wrong did I get both of these games last week. But given enough time the Raiders will prove me correct. Ricky's excuses this weekend, not playing on coast and not enough rep players in his team.
Tigers, Tigers were good last week and I expect that they will be good this week.

I heard Vidot was on the outer for being a lazy trainer. Thaiday may be in the same boat. It could be Bennett's no nonsense leadership being established, or it could just be his little way of saying he wants their salary freed up for a new purchase.

Hi everyone,
Not a great start to the tipping season for the Newbie but then again, it’s only the first week and there’s a long way to go for me to redeem myself. OK, let’s get into it…
Eels - after what I saw last week on the telly, I’m tipping the Slippery Ones. The Doggies got ambushed by a slick Panthers mob and didn’t look anywhere close to 2014 Grand Finalists. Yeah, the Doggies did get 3 late ones but they do lose JR this week and they only have a 5-day rest compared to the Eels’ seven. Looks pretty easy but then again…
Broncos - WB has done some “shuffling” that might work for him. That and the enormous (some may say unwarranted) disdain I have for Paul “Cry Baby” Gallen makes it easy for me to tip the Broncos this week. Geez I hate that bloke!
Panthers - as mentioned above, the Panthers were pretty darn good last week. You would think they’d be too good for the Titans this week, wouldn’t you? Still can’t get used to those god-awful pink jerseys though. Ouch! Panthers for me.
Storm - Manly’s effort last week was rubbish and to go scoreless in the second half just confirms it. Storm’s effort last week (defence-wise) was, by all accounts, sterling. Just can’t back Manly with any confidence on what I saw so it’ll have to be the Storm Troopers for me.
Knights - anyone have a spare coin they can lend me? I need one so I can flip it for this game. Seriously, I have absolutely no idea with this game. Cowboys at home again with both sides having a nice 7 day break. Everyone (except for the Coach so far) seems to be pretty confident with the Cowboys. Being the “Newbie”, I just don’t get it. I must be missing something here. Or maybe I just need to gain more knowledge. Is this my “roughie” game of the week? No guts, no glory! I’ll tip the boys from Newcastle on Saturday (K)night!
Rabbits - I watched the Bunnies do their “thang” last week and was pretty impressed. Looks like they haven’t missed a beat from last year. Mind you, the Mighty Chooks did it with a touch of class also, so the Newbie is a little undecided on this one. My heart is telling me go the Chooks but my head is leaning towards the Bunnies. What to do? What to do? As much as it pains me (and believe me it does), I think I need to “play safe” and tip the Fluffy Ones this week. Hey, more than happy if I get this one wrong though!
Warriors - don’t know about anyone else but the Green Machine really surprised me last week. Just can’t get a handle on them I have to admit. I’ll tip against them again this week until I feel comfortable they can do it on a regular basis. Go the Warriors! Peow! Peow!
Dragons - geez, I reckon the Tigers were a wee bit lucky getting over the line against those Titans last Saturday night. The Dragons weren’t all that great considering Melbourne controlled the footy for only 43% of the game. I think I read somewhere that the Storm had to lay 30-odd tackles in their own 20 in the first half hour and the Dragons still couldn’t put ‘em away. Good defence from the Storm or poor attack from the Dragons? Hmm, Newbie might have to give the Red’n’Whites the benefit of the doubt and tip them to win this week.
@ Johnny Ray – mate that video you put up was soooo funny! Thanks brother. Made me chuckle continuously all the way through. Reminded me of the early days at Stock Road (were you there Shanghai?) when we used to have “competitions” along the same lines after we got back from Saturday night at the pub. Ah, they were the days!
Good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Until next week people. Cheers.

Round 1 wasn't much fun, here's hoping for a better go
Doggies to beat Parra
Broncos to have to have a win over the Sharkies. Benny has dropped the hammer and has set the standard. The Bunnies were too good last week but I don't think the Sharkies will offer the same.
Panthers to beat the Titans, no love for them yet. Interesting times for the gold coast if they can get DCE this year.
Storm to take care of Manly, to many dramas for them.
Cowboys to clean up the Knights
Bunnies to beat the Roosters
Toss up here, Warriors to beat Canberra (still not convinced about the pen in the eye)
Tigers to take care of the Dragons

Yeah you can cry under water, it's called Submarine . You guys in Australia should know all about that considering how out here in New Zealand we don't even have Navy or an Airforce or really an Army. Our whole defence force is just two guys in rowboat, one to paddle the ship and the other to tell other guys to please F*** off ! Yeah ... and we're going go to Iraq ! S*** is about get to real ... ;-D

Coach Spud, I am a supporter of Parramatta but only since last year so I would never try and lump myself with the great and good who have stood by the club for all those years. So not jaded yet. But the corner has been turned and we have a great team and a good coach. B.A. "I pity the fool" Arthur has a lot planned for the coming years.
Submitted by Coach Potato on
All good your ill-fitting thongness. Still, as an Eel, you must now fully embrace that your team and fellow supporters have not had a lap of honour since 1986, second only to the Sharks (1967), and just ahead of the Gold Coast evolution of failures ( Seagulls / Giants / Chargers / Titans / Line-Dancers) who first had a team back in 1988
Submitted by Baggy_Gee on
True I do embrace that history and everything that as a club we have achieved. But with the current playing group we have a good chance of shaking the tree this year after a massive improvement last season. Sad that the tackle ended in a 9 week ban but what a hit it was. 9 1/2 weeks is plenty of time to get ready for the next game. Warriors Juniors going to be fit ready and angry come round 10 Look out!

I'm hoping to bounce back this week along with some of the teams I'm tipping.
Bulldogs - Doggies close first round but no cigar. No Reynolds will hurt. Eels need a few more wins like last week to convince me.
Broncos - The Sharks let me down last week and I think the Broncos will be disappointed with the way they played against the Bunnies. I'm looking Wayne's boys to turn things around this weekend.
Panthers - While I was surprised at how well the Titans went against the Tigers I'm sticking with the boys from Penrith.
Storm - Will Manly bounce back? For me the Storm know how to win the tough games. Their forwards should win it for them.
Cowboys - To really bounce back after a very poor first round effort.
Rabbitohs - As a mate said the Bunnies were four weeks ahead of most teams going into the season. Souths in a close one.
Warriors - Not sure that bouncing back is in this teams DNA but I'm taking a punt (again). Tompkins back should make a difference. Would like to see Lolohea at 6.
Tigers - Campbelltown. No Creagh for the Dragons and I see Dugan is in doubt.
Good luck to everyone. Enjoy the weekend!!!

Raiders by 4, home ground advantage
Dragons by 8, if they get it right and start going forward instead of sideways.

Well if last week was hard tipping this week seems like mission impossible, but here's my thoughts:
Bulldogs - The Eels had a great win last week and the Bulldogs (thankfully) had a loss against my beloved panthers. But, I cant see Dessy Hasler being easy on the lads after 70 minutes of sleeping and ten minutes of football. That coupled with Parramatta's record at ANZ, I'm backing the Doggies.
Broncos - This was definitely a tough one to pick, like you said thinker its hard to split these two apart after last week's performances. But, on the slight chance that some new blood in the side brings energy and not inexperience, I'm backing Brisbane.
Panthers - Ah, what a great start to the season from the boys! We held it together against a tough side so the Titans should be no problem.
Storm - I was tempted to take Manly here, Melbourne's defence was great last week against a persistent and battering St George but their attack was lacking. But the off field issues plaguing Manly were enough for me to take Storm.
Cowboys - If North Queensland lose this, I'll be starting to think that their home turf isn't the fortress it once was. Last week could be attributed to a great Roosters attack but a loss to the Knights here will be a shocker.
Rabbits - I can't go past the form the Bunnies have shown in the across the off season. That and the fact the Roosters are Friend-less, I'm taking South Sydney here.
Raiders - Injuries, Injuries, Injuries. Lot of men out for the away side this week and with a poor record in Canberra I think the Raiders could take this.
Tigers - A win is a win, even if it is by a field goal. I liked the look of the Tigers at the start of the 2014 season until they seemed to drop off the radar. I like them again this year and, you heard it here first, I see them being in the top 8 come the end of the season.
Good luck everyone, here's hoping that my first round wasn't just beginner's luck!
