The 2016 NRL Grand Final

Melbourne Storm vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday night (7.15pm AEDT) – ANZ Stadium

The Melbourne Storm

What a team they have been, and what a team they are. I was taken with something on the weekend. While watching the AFL preliminary final between the GWS Giants and the Western Bulldogs it was obvious to everyone who had the most crowd support. There were 21000 at that game, and 11000 of them flew in from Melbourne to support the away team. The home team were booed when they came out for their warm-up. It was a peculiar thing to watch. On the same weekend 28000 people were at AAMI Park for the Storm/Raiders preliminary, and while the Raiders had a fantastic group of travelling supporters, 25000 of the people in that crowd were decked out in purple. Granted the Storm have been around a while longer than the Giants, but it's clear to me that the city of Melbourne have embraced the Storm as their team in that game they don't really understand. Bellamy, Smith, Cronk and Slater can't walk down to the shop to get a sausage roll without hearing a chorus of 'Go Storm'. The Storm workforce may be all FIFO workers, but Melbourne has accepted them as a part of the flock. Meanwhile the Giants are not seen as a team representing their region but as colonial representatives of the AFL. Perhaps that will change in time...but I have my doubts. There's not a chance in hell the AFL would punish the Giants like the NRL did to the Storm following the salary cap saga. Amazingly, the Storm have come through all that and are as resilient as ever. Their supporters are more fervent than ever. In a strange way, that salary cap scandal may have been a positive for the purple machine. What a team they are.

The Cronulla Sharks

50 years and not a premiership to show for it, most of the experts have them pencilled in as the winner on Sunday night. Here's another team that have battled their fare share of controversy. Several times in the history of this game those in charge have wanted to kill off the club altogether, or at least relocate them. Two years ago the club were penalised over their illegal supplements program, and here they are in a grand final. Like the Storm, the Sharks and their supporters are as resilient as ever. To think the Essendon Bombers have the wooden spoon in 2016, and the Sharks could have a premiership. Love them or loathe them, their success this season has been an extraordinary achievement.

The verdict

The team that wins the grand final will do so by defeating every other team that finished in the top four this season. Whoever lifts the trophy on Sunday night has got there by beating the best of the best.

On face value it looks like the Sharks have all the momentum leading into this grand final. That was a dominating performance over the Cowboys, but there are a few question marks about the win for mine. Many of us feared the Cowboys would struggle to perform after their extra time victory over the Broncos, and struggle they did. In the early period their completion rate was 2 from 10. Nothing went right and the Sharks could smell blood in the water. They ran riot and the home crowd pushed them on. What I wonder is how much of that poor performance was a result of pressure from the Sharks, and how much of it was a result of the Cowboys previous game? The answer is probably a little bit from column A and a little bit from column B, but how much from each column? I just don't know. The Sharks were great, but I suspect every other top eight side (except the Broncos) would have done much the same thing to the Cowboys last weekend.

As for the Storm, I'm not the only person that thinks they were lucky to win that game over the Raiders. Note that both grand finalists played the Raiders during the finals and both teams defeated the Raiders by two points. Of course, the Sharks beat the Raiders away from home and with players unavailable, so on that form line alone you'd be leaning their way. Lucky or not, the Storm have an uncanny ability to win close games. They execute a game plan better than anyone else and the wins follow. Their senior players have plenty of big game experience to draw upon, and it's usually winning experience. Paul Gallen has plenty of experience in big games too, but in almost every big game he's played he's lost. The round 26 clash between these sides was a fairly big game too. The minor premiership was on the line, and the Storm won 26-6. The game was closer than that, but the Storm won 26-6. Obviously the grand final isn't at AAMI Park, and the Storm haven't actually played a game at ANZ Stadium all season, but when they do play there they win 71% of the time. The Sharks have only played their twice this season for a narrow win over the Bulldogs and a loss to the Rabbitohs. Their win rate at ANZ is a paltry 32%. Not a lot of happy memories for the Sharks at Homebush. Sharks coach Shane Flanagan is in his first grand final. It seems like Bellamy has been doing this forever. Experience matters. It's hard to measure what's it worth, but it's worth something. I think it's worth plenty.

Prince died in April this year. Love live Prince. Purple Reign...Purple Reign...

Sorry I wasn't here to give a running ball by ball. Sharks did wonderfully for about 75 minutes, then followed it up with the worse 5 minutes of football to try and give the game away. It was the negative time wasting kick that changed their mind set. How the Storm failed to punish them for their lack of respect for ball control and making the tackle stick was just unlucky. Good win to break the drough and extend the Cowboys drough to 2yrs ;P. But yes, Mr Smiths efforts were heroic tonight, 74 tackles, I'll give it to him, I can't stand the way he conducts himself on field, but he's pretty good a player. Best speech by a losing captain that I have heard in a long time.

No worries christine.
Was not the greatest second half.

As much as I hated watching all the errors, I loved the daytime Grand Final. To see both sides under the pump in the baking sun, that's what this day is all about. The sooner the NRL get their act together and move the big one back to 3pm the better.

To all the contributors thanks for going toe to toe in 2016.
I've done my best to ruffle all of your feathers, make your blood boil.
If I've done that to you at some stage, or frequently, then I've succeeded. Success equals bringing out the passion in people for their team.

Club and State rivalries. Dislike for the other teams, and their players. It's the growing of the game. Passion in fashion. I'm doing my bit.

Thanks again Thinker for letting me have my say ad nauseum. Surprised more people don't have more to say but it is what it is.

Congratulations to JR - The Prancer
Congratulations to Thinker - The Dancer
$30 voucher and $20 voucher for you.

Congrats again to Footy Chick. Too good for all of us. Now also in footy tipping.

Thanks Coach, looking forward to Parra V Panthers next year. It'll be a game for the ages. Best of luck with the off season, May all your clubs be injury and drama free.

I had the same thought last night Thinker....have I ever hated a result more? Chambers makes that late pass and it's all over for the Sharks but watching the games poorest ambassadors of the sport Gallen, Ennis and Fifita lift the trophy was hard to stomach.

The game was no where near the spectacle of last years final but it was refreshing after the season we've had to see the refs had no influence on the outcome of the match.

Cameron Smith was outstanding last night and deserved the win on sheer effort alone. Love him or hate him he's certainly some one I'd be proud to have lead my country.

Congrats to Footy Chick for ending the season on top.....

Thanks everyone for all your contributions this season. Some were interesting. Some were baffling. Some were unnecessary. Some were brilliant.

Well done to our tipping comp winners in 2016 - Footy Chick, Rick and Nik - they've been in a three way battle for much of the season and deserve their prizes. I'll go back and find out how much I promised the prizewinners and will be in touch with you directly.

Thanks to Coach for his competitions and the generous donations of prizes from Coach and Mark Ashford. Above and beyond the call of duty - I salute you.

Most of you won't be back until next year. Have a great off-season and thank you for being here. At the start of the season my little helper and I thought we were a chance at cracking one million eyeballs this season...and we did. Amazing really. Thank you for being here. I hope you got something out of it, and I hope some of you had some luck in your tipping comps away from here (I was going okay until the finals series...I can't even remember the last game I tipped correctly).

I'll put up a page for off-season ramblings, four nations, spring racing predictions and for those of you that just wish to drop in from time to time.

For everyone else, thank you and good night. May your team prosper in season 2017.

well our footy has ended another year, and our teams have suffered losses and wins. in the end the team that won deserved a win in both the AFL and NRL. my team didn't win this year at least they tried.

So best of luck Next year guys.

Eagles Rock forever.

Mornin - still in NSW Newbie.
Interesting article mate. That Homemade Bailey's sound alright.
Got a nice beer here in NSW at the mo called Kosciuzsko Pale Ale - about $72.00 a carton but nicer on tap, which four of our locals have.
Back in Gold Days here (reminds me of Paddy Hannan in WA from when I was over there - visiting), we had 130 pubs in Bx.

I am a very devoted EPL follower, I guess after so many years in playing Country NSW soccer/football and coaching, it was blessed to me.
Keep me in your circles mate as several of my friends are Gunners supporters and I saw them play in 99th FA Cup against West Ham at Wembley. You've probably read the expanded post I made before on it - here at Thinker site.

I run a FOX Sports Tipping Comp with some locals here. Costs nothing - just bragging rights to the winner. One Joker per round on one match only. I have nine this year in the comp and closed it in case of ring-ins.
Most tippers are over 1,000 pts so far as we are into Round 8 next.
But many have bad rounds and some score around 300-400 when arse tipping (guess) comes into play.

You and others are most welcome but on all occasions I like to receive private email address so I can contact the player direct with the name and login process.

A) If I like the air, my lips get wet.

Cheers mate and big hello's to WA. - Big Pete in Bx (the home of The Great Race)

Been good chatting to you all, will be back next year to bore you to death. In the meantime i'm trying to pick next years GF winner! Odds in the UK are as follows:

Brisbane Broncos 6/1
North Queensland Cowboys 13/2
Melbourne Storm 7/1
Penrith Panthers 9/1
Cronulla Sharks 10/1
Canberra Raiders 11/1
New Zealand Warriors 12/1
South Sydney Rabbitohs 16/1
Sydney Roosters 16/1
Parramatta Eels 20/1
Canterbury Bulldogs 20/1
Gold Coast Titans 20/1
Manly Sea Eagles 22/1
Wests Tigers 33/1
St George/Illawarra Dragons 100/1
Newcastle Knights 250/1

Who is the value? Coach will say panthers, he could be right?!

Coach Potato's picture

Gary, are you sure that is the market - three big name teams and then little ol' Penrith ? Our town is approx. 2/3 the population of Chester.
The general NRL fan's favourite pre-season pasttime is to nominate Panthers to finish last.

Interesting to see what almost paid off for the Storm in the last 5 minutes - unstructured attack, is how Penrith play all through the game.

Thinker says its not the way the game will go.

Funny that it's what won the 2015 Grand Final in the last minute, and it's what almost stole the 2016 title in a similar fashion.

Coach Potato's picture

Gary hows this Super League going?
Debacle in you ask me.
Two minutes h finals series, sill 4 weeks to go and at the end of that the top 4 teams to play the two Prelims can't be caught.

Bloody call it off, and just play the Prelims.

What a waste of he next month.
4 teams fielding their reserve grade side, not caring if hey win or lose.

Coach Potato's picture

*Two month long final series, 4 week still to go....

(I'll learn how to type one day)

Couldn't help my self had to come back for one last post.
To the Thinker & TLH can't thank you enough for this site, I love it.
To "a", Tailspin, Rocket, Broncoswimmer, and all QLD supporters keep the faith we will be back next year.
To Baggy, your Eels will feature next year.
To Fortress, BigPete and other Manly supporters...you will be there.
In fact to all supporters of your clubs, 2017 is an open door to success. Good luck to all of you.
Second last wish is to Thinker, maybe something special for his Roosters.
Finally, my friend Coach, you are the most vocal on this site, and provide excellent stats, comps, and Penrith predictions.
Enjoy the off season Coach. I'll look forward to the Broncs evening the ledger next year.

Have a great off season everyone, a great Christmas and we'll do it all again in 2017

Baggy_Gee's picture

Thanks Mark, might run into you and the other locals at Suncorp next year for the ONLY worth while game that will be held there all season. But I like 20/1 on the Eels to win it all next year, We'll do our best to be there like everyone else, Lets hope nothing wierd happens in the off.

Coach Potato's picture

No worries Mark.

All good fun .
I do hate some teams around though. Nothing personal.
Think of Man City and Man U fans. Do they get on?
Everton and Liverpool?
Celtic and Rangers?

Origin footy was the cause, and the result of that is that most Sydney teams just hate Brisbane. It's not my doing. I just partake in the rivalry.

As much as people want to think that I just talk up shit about how good Penrith could be, I hope to make a few out there believers in time. Gus's five year plan goes back to May 2011, so here we are 5 years and 5 months on. No silverware but the plans haven't been abandoned. Gus would strike fear into 15 other teams, if he made another 5 year plan starting from now.

Awesome. What a game from Cronulla ! Dude how cool was it seeing Gallen and greatest Sharks player of all time Ettingshausen embracing each other on field after final siren had sounded knowing that together they've just won Provan - Summons trophy for their club ! Miracles do happen ! That's it from me for this year. Don't know when I will be back if I will be back at all. If I'm not I just would like to thank everybody again who made contributing to this site such all kinds of awesome fun during years, Coach, Newbie, Baggy-Gee, Tailspin, Tigerholic, Steel Panther, Mark Ashford, Declan_S, a, Footy Chick, Christine, The Voyeur, Nik, Rick, Rocket Ryan, Wally Lewis and most of all The Thinker and Thinkers Little Helper. Thanks again guys for everything that you do for this site and best of luck for your team in 2017 no matter who they might be. That's me now signing off so until you see me next time around, I just want you guys to remember one thing - go the NZ Warriors ! Kiwi Power ! Peow ! Peow ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0j8frgmdvgc Peace. ;-D
