Round one selections

Parramatta Eels vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – Pirtek Stadium

The Eels have put that unused Jarryd Hayne money to good use with some notable recruiting in the off-season. The two Michaels (Gordon and Jennings) add speed and experience to the backline, and Beau Scott adds fortitude to a pack that is better than most of us believe. The key addition though, is Keiran Foran in the halves. The Eels are convinced they can build a team with premiership credentials around Foran. They may be right, but he is in doubt for Thursday, and I'm here to talk about Thursday. The Broncos have, but for the debutant on one wing and a representative forward in the front row, named the side that all but won the grand final last year. Hodges has retired and he's hard to replace but he had to be replaced eventually - Roberts is clearly no slouch. They aren't over the line on Thursday - they're backing up from an international road trip and the Eels have a history of winning (often unexpectedly) in round one in recent years. With Foran I could lean that way, but without Foran the Broncos should be too strong.

Verdict – Broncos by 8

Result - Broncos 17 defeated Eels 4

Manly Sea Eagles vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday night – Brookvale Oval

The Sea Eagles new coach gets to test his new-look forward pack on Friday night. The Bulldogs pack are a fair test, but the Sea Eagles have recruited well and, on paper at least, appear to have addressed their weaknesses in the middle of the paddock. And I'm calling it now - Martin Taupau will be a Brookvale superstar by the end of this season. The other new faces around him (Myles and Brown) aren't too shabby either. That Manly backline, even after the departure of Foran, is representative class from jerseys 1 through 7, and they'll get their chance to shine in season 2016. I had high hopes for the Bulldogs this year, but with two Origin reps in Morris (Brett) and Klemmer (Colonel) unavailable, I have to tip the Eagles at home.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 10

Result - Bulldogs 28 defeated Sea Eagles 6

Canberra Raiders vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday afternoon – GIO Stadium

The Raiders can't even find a spot for Blake Austin in their starting thirteen, and the rest of their interchange bench isn't loaded up with park footballers either. Sisa Waqa is pulling on a jersey for the Mounties this weekend - who would have thought the Raiders would have such depth? Meanwhile the Panthers brightest prospect in Matt Moylan is unavailable. That said, the visitors should not be underestimated, and in recent years the Raiders record at home has been worse than ordinary. Note the daytime kick-off, which almost always means points aplenty in the capital. Panthers coach Anthony Griffin had some trouble with scoring points when he was holding the clipboard at the Broncos, so I have some doubt over the Panthers capacity to match the Raiders for points on Saturday.

Verdict – Raiders by 10

Result - Raiders 30 defeated Panthers 22

Wests Tigers vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – Campbelltown Stadium

The rugby league world awaits for the Warriors grub to morph into a beautiful butterfly. This year surely. A spine of Luke, Johnson, Robson and Tuivasa-Sheck simply has to work...doesn't it? The Tigers have a new look spine too, but it doesn't look quite so beautiful. Cherrington steps into the all important number nine for Robbie Farah, and the young halves combination of Littlejohn and Moses is quite the mystery. A daytime slot for the Warriors only helps their cause - more points here than a triangle factory.

Verdict – Warriors by 20

Result - Tigers 34 defeated Warriors 26

North Queensland Cowboys vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

It's not easy to keep a great team together, but the Cowboys have named the exact same seventeen that brought them their first premiership last season. And if the Cowboys don't beat you the weather will. I was up in Townsville not so long ago - I was driving out of Townsville airport after 10pm and it was still 31 degrees outside. It won't be 31 degrees on Saturday night, but it will feel like it. Those big Fifita brothers will feel like they're running through soup, and we all saw how fit the Cowboys looked at the Nines and at the Club Challenge. Probably the game of the round and a contest early, but I'd be backing the Cowboys to run away with this late in the second half.

Verdict – Cowboys by 14

Result - Cowboys 20 defeated Sharks 14

Sydney Roosters vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Sunday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

I happen to think the Roosters could be a better side without Mitchell Pearce - let's see how wrong I can be. The Roosters halves of Hastings and Nikorima are younger than Masterchef but brimming with potential. We also get to see Latrell Mitchell in his first grade debut - a player I spruiked last year as the next Greg Inglis. You'll be hearing that comparision a lot this season...I hope. The Bunnies are a warm favourite for this all-important clash between the last two original clubs in the competition...and deservedly so. Sam Burgess returns with a point to prove, and Inglis looked fit enough in early outings this year. Any side with those two on board is hard to toss, but the rest of the side has a few question marks hanging over them. A decent chunk of the Roosters engine room is missing, Mitchell Pearce is in the doghouse and SKD has just escaped the bighouse, but I think the tricolours can spring a minor upset on Sunday. All but essential viewing when these sides face each other. Get there.

Verdict – Roosters by 4

Result - Rabbitohs 42 defeated Roosters 10

Gold Coast Titans vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday night – CBus Super Stadium

If you only miss one NRL game this weekend, it should probably be this one. As much as I'm excited about the return of the NRL, it's hard to get excited about a game that, on paper, looks uglier than The Thinker in a pie-eating contest. I've picked these two sides out as the teams most likely to compete for the wooden spoon and I'm not alone. The injury cloud over Titans captain and custodian William Zillman has me leaning ever so slightly to the Knights - a team with an impressive record on the Gold Coast. Plenty of new faces for both sides but I'm banking on the experienced heads of Mullen in the backs and Smith in the forwards to steer their side around and do enough. Here's hoping Titans halfback Ashley Taylor shows some good signs - he's promising.

Verdict – Knights by 2

Result - Titans 30 defeated Knights 12

Melbourne Storm vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Monday night – AAMI Park

The Storm rarely win these early season games by much, but they rarely lose them either. Perhaps I am a deluded soul but I think the Storm could win the premiership with this side. A tremendous pack of forwards backed up by an experienced spine. The purple machine are the team with the smarts on the field (and in the coaches box) to adjust to rule changes quicker and more effectively than anyone else. I raised at least one eyebrow when I saw Josh Dugan named in the centres on Monday night. Kurt Mann gets his chance at fullback and Russell Packer gets a second at everything with his NRL return after a period of time away from family and friends. Apparently he put that period of his life to good use, and has come out the other side a better (and definitely bigger) person. A chance to atone. I have doubts about the Dragons pack in season 2016 so I couldn't possibly back them here. The Storm by 1-12 looks likely.

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result - Storm 18 defeated Dragons 16

1989 Tina Turner Rugby League promo

Comments

The Thinker's picture

Greetings football fans. It has been a while. I'll have my preview and tips for round one published later this morning. For now, here is the round one page, in case some of you in the tipping competition need to submit your entries now.

Note that we have a Thursday night start - which may catch a few of us out.

And for the nostalgia buffs, I've included the promo for the 1989 rugby league season. Hardly a Rooster to be seen, and a golden age where men like Benny Elias and Johnny Cartwright were considered sex symbols. If there has ever been a grand final to better the one we got last year, 1989 would be the logical pick.

We've come a long way in this game, but it's hard not to have a soft spot for this era.

Welcome back everyone. It's nice to be alive.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I like your choice of footage Thinker, is that Stirlo getting over between a few Bronco forwards? Great work from the little man.

So my tips to kick off the season

Eels - We have a great team on paper, and a win under the belt, admittedly in a reduced game, and we're at home. The Ponies have the long haul to and from the motherland, and maybe more telling, not a Friday night. Eels by 2 with a heart breaking try under the sticks to seal the game.

Eagles - Going to be a hard night for both teams, but at least I'm willing to give Manly a chance to impress with a packed house at home on the first Friday of the season. Everyone is claiming that they have had the best buying spree, it's time to deliver and get me the points...... I mean walk away with the win. Eagles by 8

Raiders - I like the cut of Blake Austin's jib. He honestly for me is wonderful to watch and here's to hoping that he gets a state call up later in the year. It's a hard call, I want the Panthers to prove that the only thing that held them up last season was the fact that their spine played less than one game combined all year. But with out Matt Moylan, and in Canberra on a pristine Saturday afternoon I'm going with the home team. Raiders by 6

Warriors - They have to win. Massive paper advantage, already got some of their combinations happening at the nine's. Sorry Tiger fan's I don't see it being your day. Warriors by 20

Cowboys - Regular viewers would see that this is a breakdown in coverage, I can't stand to tip the Cows. But I want the points, if there ever was a team to burst their first home game as defending champions, it will be the Sharks. But JT is a great player, the Cows look solid as a team with a middle aged roster, They are going to be hard to stop. Don't think that they will go all the way, but they will be close at the end. Cowboys by 10

Rabbits - Sam 'MIA' Burgess will help with the win here. Like Inglis he is a talisman for the Bunnies and they will be better for having him back. I think that the Roosters are going to be a bit slow in the outset, new combinations, missing stars. Bunnies by 8

Knights - The only thing that gets me over the line for the knights is the fact that Pauli Pauli is in. He is one of the young guys I am sad about losing from Parramatta and I hope he proves for 22 rounds that we should have hung on to him. On paper the Knights for me are too strong for the titans to deal with. Knights by 12

Storm - Collingwood will get the win here as I don't see the Dragons repeating their form from last year where they gave several teams a scare and won a few games that everyone didn't give them a prayer in. Could do with a Monday night loss for Cam Smith, but I don't see it coming up in the cards. Storm by 4

The Thinker's picture

Great stuff Baggy. Nice to see you sticking solid with the Eels. A big chance this week.

Keep those tips coming in tipsters. Once again, there will be prizes for the top three this season - and I'll probably throw in a fourth prize for a random participant who keeps on trucking all season long.

Prize details will be announced as soon as I can. Discussions have commenced with a few interested parties.

All the best

Cowboys by 10 I think JT will back up his with a win here

Rabbitohs by 1 Roosters will be without a host of talent here Rabbitohs to win in a absolute thriller

Titans by 1 Another thriller here I think Gold Coast will get home here in the Gold Coast

Storm by 6 Storm will get off to a good start with a Monday Night win

Glad to be back in the tipping comp with Rick Baggy-Gee and Mark and whoever else is in I wonder how many people are in

Now I will be going to see the Cowboys game this weeked

The_NRL_Whisperer's picture

Last 2 years I've predicted the season winner before Round 1, ie Souths-Cowboys, so in the hope of making it 3 from 3, I'm on a limb again and saying that the Broncos will take it this year.
Positions 3-8 on the ladder will be tighter than a nun's whatsit, but I consider Broncos, Cowboys & Manly the strongest contenders this year. Warriors, Bulldogs, Sharks, Chooks & Bunnies to fight for the crumbs.
My Rd 1 Tips:
Broncos.
Manly.
Raiders.
Warriors.
Cowboys.
Bunnies.
Knights.
Storm.

Footy chick's picture

Hello boys. I've missed you all.

Andy Browne's picture

Hey everyone, I'm new to this dark, dodgy corner of the internet and I'm looking forward to spending some quality time wiping the floor with you all:) I last won a tipping comp about 15 years ago and I've been dining out on the glory ever since. 15 years may seem like a long time between drinks but remember. ...form is temporary, class is permanent! I wish all of you the best and may the best me win!

Broncos. A bit of disruption at parra with a key playmaker under an injury cloud and Watmough coming a cropper. They aren't playing on a Friday night though so the Broncs might not know what to do with themselves. Still. ..I think they'll be good enough. Just.

Manly. Recruited well, and I hate the Mutts. Nuff said.

Raiders. Bit of a toss up here. ..I think Penrith will do well this year. Going for the home team though, just because anyone who visits Canberra always ends up depressed.

Warriors. Far superior on paper. But it's the Warriors. Should win in a canter. But it's the Warriors. Tigers will probably fight to avoid the spoon this year. What a shocking club for letting great players go and creating internal strife. P.S: But they're playing the Warriors.

Cowboys. Sharks will do well this year I think, but not as good as the hicks from up north.

Souths. The Burgess factor combined with a hugely distracting pre season for the Chooks should see the Redfern club get up here.

Titans. Maybe. There's a game I'll struggle to watch.

Storm. Too much class, albeit on old legs. I back the Saints this year...to do nothing.

Good luck!

Johnny Ray's picture

YEAH ! WE'RE BACK B*TCHES !!! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4jBDnYE1WjI BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!! ;-D

Awesome. Welcome back everybody to another season of footy picks with The Thinker and welcome to all our new tipsters ! Let's get on with this week picks.

Eels - In my end of year picks last week I picked Paramatta to be one of biggest surprises of season. That's why I'm picking them to win this week playing Broncos away in Brisbane. Eels 20 - Broncos 16

Bulldogs - I don't rate Sea Eagles this year and I really don't rate their new coach Trent Barrett. That's why I'm picking their old coach Des Hasler to get the win here in this game at Brookvale. Bulldogs 14 - Sea Eagles 8.

Raiders - Sorry Penrith fans. Panthers won't win this game. Expect strong performance from Canberra in their first home game of the season. Raiders 34 - Panthers 12

Warriors - 2016 NRL Premiers play 2016 Wooden Spooners. Guess who wins this game ? Warriors 54 - Tigers 4

Sharks - Cowboys will struggle here first game up against strong Cronulla side who for me at least are legitimate contenders this year for grand final trophy. Sharks 28 - Cowboys 20

Roosters - After one of the worse off seasons in living memory for glamour club like Roosters, Chooks have something to prove this year, especially in this game against their old team rivals Rabbitohs. Roosters 36 - Rabbitohs 32

Titans - Two of the worse clubs from last year play off this weekend and I can't spilt them, that's why I'm going with team with home game advantage and that's Titans. Titans 16 - Knights 6

Dragons - Though I don't back them to make top eight this year, I still think Dragons will shock a few teams this year who underestimate them and the strength of some their players. I think Storm will be one of those sides. Dragons 14 - Storm 10

Awesome. Now on a serious note before I go I just want to take the time out to thank The Thinker and Little Thinker again for letting me be a part of your tipping competition for another season, Cool. I know it may not mean much to you but it's means alot to me that's why I just want to thank you. After some of the comments I've left on here through the years, God knows what you guys must really think of me ! Thanks everybody ! Good luck with all your picks and go NZ Warriors ! Kiwi Power ! Peow ! Peow ! ;-D

The Thinker's picture

Welcome aboard Andy Browne - it may be dark and dodgy but I'm not sure we're in a corner. Looks more like a hole from where I sit.

Good luck with your tips.

Shells's picture

Dear thinker, just wanted to thank you as I am in a work footy tipping comp and have no idea about nrl. I took your tips last year and won the comp and the prize money! Keep it up this year please? Michelle

Coach Potato's picture

To anyone that's new, tell us who your team is. Its almost a rule. Almost, because I mean I don't actually make the rules, although I do put forward an occasional suggestion for consideration, and because last year a real team effort finally managed to disarm the Thinker, to fess up to being a Rooster. Oh what fun we'll have with that one this year.

Anyway, good enough for host, good enough for visitor I say.

Coach Potato's picture

Having quite a diversified sport-following portfolio, I wanted to check when the AFL season starts. Not til bloody Easter??! You gotta be kidding. What kind of go-slow supplements are they on down at Headquarters? Obviously not the same ones that make you go a bit faster!

chooks's picture

If the roosters can hang in there until boyd and hargraves get back...look out...looking forward to the young kids standing up..go the mighty roosters...

Sammills's picture

Hi thinker just wondered if I managed to get in the tipping comp. hope all good with you Go Cowboys

Thinker's Little Helper's picture

Hello all,

Just a quick note to say that the tipping roster is now well and truly finalised. I've just sent out an email to all successful participants, so watch out for that.

Sadly we had to keep a cap on numbers to ensure things were sensible so a handful of people did miss out after all the coin tossing, so sorry to those ladies and gentlemen, we hope you can still find it in your hearts to tip in the comments and show us all up anyway.

I'll probably be tightening a few nuts and bolts around the website over the next few days/weeks so if anything goes particularly crazy drop me a line.

Coach Potato's picture

Hale! Oh 6th Immortal of this game of Rugby League, Walter James "Wally" Lewis.

A great honour to be in a tipping comp with you once more.

newbie from perth's picture

Hi everyone,

Yee-Hah! Here we go, here we go, here we go! Didn’t see any pre-season games, haven’t been on the NRL website since last year (D’oh!) and have absolutely no idea other than the Boss’ comments, so coming into Round 1 completely blind. For what it’s worth, these are my tips to start off the year.

Eels - seeing as the Boss has mentioned the international road trip thing and the Eels having round 1 winning history, I might just go against my better judgement and tip the Slippery Ones to start the year off.

Manly - yeah, at home with new signings has me tipping Sea Eagles.

Raiders - for no other reason than most people like ‘em to win. Well, the Boss anyway.

Warriors - going on last year and new blood, Warriors look good here. Looking forward to the Peow! Peow! this year Johnny.

Cowboys - should be able to keep up the momentum from last year. Then again, some teams suffer “hangovers” from the previous season do they not? It shouldn’t happen here but you never know. Giddy Up! Cowboys for me.

Roosters - I know I shouldn’t tip the Mighty Roosters but I am Tri-Colour through and through. What makes it easier is the Boss has picked ‘em too. Phew! Here’s hoping.

Titans - why not eh? Just ‘cos they’re at CBus and no other reason.

Storm - yeah, Storm Troopers for me at home.

Thanks for the tipping invite Boss (you too TLH), much appreciated. Here’s hoping I can do a bit better than last year. Good luck to everyone with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Cheers.

P.S. If there's an exception to every rule, is there an exception to that rule? Hmmm…

Sammills's picture

Thanks thinker good to be in.
rd1 a lottery
Broncos - by 4 but Eels normally start well
Manly - 6 by a pop of the Cherry
Raiders - 8 high scoring at Fortress GIO not
Cowboys - come in No. 39 ?
Bunnies - by 6 Burgess bros return
Warriors - by just enough
knights - by 10 as No Gidley
Storm - by 10 Slaters return

Baggy_Gee's picture

Do I have to out myself coach? Great clip for the first JR, pumps up the blood and fire's the spirit for tomorrow nights game.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Good luck all, I played a straight bat for round one there's bound to be a couple of upsets, Coach could be right about the dogs, they are always dangerous when you think they cant, Thinker I had forgotten how good that Tina Turner promo was GO Broncos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Thinker's picture

It's a good one Rocket.

I showed Ms Thinker that clip last night. She was very interested in Bobby Lindner (20 second mark)....and I quote:

"The only reason you'd kick him out of bed is to #%^& him on the floor."

She'd had a few drinks.

chooks's picture

LOL...she's a keeper

Baggy_Gee's picture

And for that reason Thinker I have kept my wife away from that video, I have to measure up against Bruce Willis daily and I don't need to add to that list. Rocket, as a supporter of the Ponies I wouldn't have thought that you would like that clip, it shows them letting in 2 tries, one big hit, and about 2 nanoseconds of them scoring in the last few seconds. It is far more favourable to the Eels, which I take as a sign for the first dance of the season tonight. UP THE MIGHTY BLUE AND GOLD!!!!!!!

Hello guys my tips for this week are:

Broncos by 8- Broncos have too much class here.

Manly by 14- Manly at the fortress, and they have a better squad on paper.

Raiders by 10- Raiders at home for me.

Warriors by 22- Warriors too good here and will smash the depleted, but promising young Tigers squad.

Cowboys by 4- Cowboys in a close one.

Rabbitohs by 16- Rabbits here.

Titans by 2- Tough one to pick but Titans just for me.

And finally of course the Dragons by 6- My Dragons to win here but only just.

Thanks a lot Thinker and the crew and good luck with your tips. BRING IT ON. The NRL is back.

Nice to have football back on

Eels. Dude :-(

Baggy_Gee's picture

Yep, finished work at 2120, just home after watching the game with a mate and here to take my licks. Devastated that our weakness last year hasn't been addressed, the centre defence was good and tough, but those edges are soft as wet rice paper. Hard to find any good points, and with Norman potentially out, next week seems a bigger mountain to climb.

Coach Potato's picture

I saw a team full of players that didn't know what their job was. Reminded me of U/6s taking turns in catching and passing, not really knowing where they're doing, or where the're going.

I see lots of muscle but I don't see a whole lot of skill. Answer for me is to play with more structure, not less. Too many players are being given free reign, and it doesn't suit about 10.

Admittedly I tipped Parra last night, but I also know their first game last year against Manly didn't mean a whole lot at the end of the year.

Islander's picture

Hey everyone ! Good to be back for the new season.

Hey thinker am i too late for round 1 tipping. Things are not so great back home, you know after the cyclone. We'll get through it and come out stronger. If there is one thing we a known for its our resilience.
Back to the footy, here are my tips for rd1.

Bulldogs by 8

The Thinker in Disneyland. He does know what day it is.

Johnny Ray's picture

I used to work with Australian who because of how immature I act for my age used to called me ' Disney On Ice' . I was cool with it until I discovered 'Ice' is Aussie word for methaphetamine. The bastard could of told me that before I had it written in pink glitter on pair of Mickey Mouse ears. I wondered why Australian Customs confiscated them and performed an all over body search on me as I made my way out of Airport ... :-(

Johnny Ray's picture

I admit though it did make for some interesting holiday snaps. Here's me at Movieworld with Bugs Bunny. Here's me at Movieworld with Daffy Duck. Here's me at Movieworld with Taz, The Tasmanian Devil. Here's me at Brisbane Airport with a customs officer hand up my ass and pair of custom made Mickey Mouse ears on my head. @Coach : http://www.neatorama.com/2008/03/20/flash-mountain-and-other-disney-secr... ;-D

I will be watching Cowboys win tonight

christine's picture

Have to rethink manly being any force this season after the way they played last night .

Rocket Ryan's picture

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater Christine, its only round one while I'm not an Eagles fan but nobody can stay in Disneyland too long ,yes they had a holiday there last night but not many sides if any could handover the ball in prime field position as often as Manly did against the dogs and not pay for it, the big concern going forward is the halves
Walker appears to be out of position there I wonder will Barrett persist with him there?

Coach Potato's picture

Can't believe how everyone was rapping Walker as the new five-eighth at Manly. He only ever made breaks at Souths out in the centres when someone else put him into a hole. Tell him he has to beat players in traffic on his own now, he'd think you were on drugs. How ironic.
